Hoffman Estates, ILTastefully decorated, well supplied vacation rental in SE Portla
Left on 05/17/2013 for a stay in January 2013
This furnished rental is beyond fantastic. The modern contemporary furnishings which when combined with all the trimmings of linens, cookware, games, videos, BBQ, beach gear, shopping cart, books, baby gear, Hdtv, the list goes on and on, you will think you fell asleep in your own home as nothing is missing, and woke up in a more hip and fun version. John is very responsive to your needs, answering pre rental questions quickly, attending to you as you arrive, and has a crew of helpers locally to fix anything as needed. Very comfortable for 2-6 people with extra linens, personal toiletry, full laundry with soap waiting for your first load. Kitchen/family room is comfortable with nice deck in back, warm fireplace in winter. We lived here for a full month and 1/2 before we got a car and were able to manage very well walking to grocery, catching the bus to explore town. The number of restaurants within walking distance will not be exhausted during your stay. If you do have a car, you will not have to worry about parking as the driveway is yours to park in and there is always parking on the street as well. We stayed almost 4 months until we found a rental, and were sorry to leave. Not only is this a comfortable rental but a bargain to boot. Enjoy!

MidwestThis one is truly a "home-away-from-home"!
Left on 11/03/2012 for a stay in October 2012
The owners have given great thought to outfitting this home to meet every need. It did not feel like a rental, it felt like being welcomed guests in someone else's home - a very comfortable home. We found it to be immaculately kept and amply supplied with lots of little extras. It's one of those homes that makes you feel like not leaving! The kitchen is set up for real cooking; the dining table expands to seat 8 and with the large windows makes a great work-from-home area. The living area is open and relaxing with a gas fireplace. The private deck and totally fenced back yard were a huge bonus. We travel with a well-behaved lab and appreciated the ease of just opening the door to let him out. The master bedroom king size bed is a nice extra that we do not find often in a short-term rental.
We also appreciated the owner's attention to details when it came to securing the rental, checking in and checking out. They have prepared a booklet with data on the home, on restaurants, what to do-where to go; etc. They also have a bookcase with all sorts of brochures and info on things to do in Portland.
The neighborhood has a friendly and safe vibe; within walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, grocery, etc. Mt. Tabor is close by and is a great place to walk the dog.
If you like sushi - check out Bamboo Sushi at 310 SE 28th - amazing! Voodoo Donuts is a little further away (1501 NE Davis)- but worth the wait in line - (everyone has to go to Voodoo in Portland at least once!) Another place to check out is Belmont Station (4500 SE Stark) - a bottle shop with a large selection.
Our stay at "Home-in-the-Hawthorne" was very enjoyable. We would definitely come back. Our thanks to John for providing great accomodations!

Daly City, CaliforniaPerfect Place in Portand
Left on 10/23/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Home in the Hawthorne was the perfect place to stay for our week's adventure exploring this interesting city and its environs. The house has everything you could ask for. The 3 bedrooms are roomy and comfortable, and with two and a half bathrooms, there was never a back-up, even with 5 of us. The house is furnished with everything you could ask for- wi-fi, Apple TV, cable, picnic kit, grill and tools, gams and books, pleasant back deck, *very* well-stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, toiletries and high-end linens, and comfy seating enough for everyone. The house is charmingly decorated, and we were greeted with a vase of fresh flowers, a bottle of Oregon wine and a welcoming phone call from the owner to make sure we got in all right and had everything we needed! They have thought of everything. The photos give a nice overview of what the house has to offer but it feels even nicer when you're inside. The owners have done a great job of making this such a welcoming place to stay.
The location is perfect: the vibrant neighborhood with every amenity close-by (shopping, eating, drinking, decor and fashion), easy access to all parts of Portland, airport and freeways east (Columbia River Gorge) and south (Willamette Valley).
The house is even more perfect. There were from 3 to 5 of us , and we were all comfortable, not crowded at all.Even on a drizzly (or rainy) evening, the fireplace, the easy comfortable feel of the living room, and all the amenities made staying in a pleasure. The recommendations for shopping and eating were spot-on- we would never have needed to leave the neighborhood if we didn't want to.
The house was a perfect jumping-off place for exploring Portland (the Saturday Market was very fun, the Rose Garden beautiful, the Chinese Garden inspiring, walking Mt.Tabor and the River Walk Esplanades a great work-out, Voo-Doo Doughnuts a one-of-a-kind experience, people-watching awesome). Besides near-by Petite Provence, we ate at andina, "new Peruvian"-highly recommended. Coffee shops and wine bars and brewpubs are everywhere. Two side trips, one up the Columbia River Gorge (don't miss Historic Highway 30 and the waterfalls) and the other down the Willamette Valley for wine tasting (Youngberg in McMinnville- not to be missed!), offered unforgettably beautiful scenery. Having this house to return to made us feel truly at home. -

Harrisburg, PAA Perfect Portland Stay!
Left on 10/14/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This was the perfect home for our week-long visit to Portland! As a family with three children, finding just the right accommodations to make everyone feel comfortable isn't always easy. This home was so tastefully and beautifully decorated with all the amenities my husband and I needed to relax and enjoy our stay, and yet it was very kid-friendly too! Because we were traveling from across the country we really appreciated arriving to find everything we needed- linens, towels, a complete kitchen, stocked bathrooms, laundry machines and even a wireless printer that we could print our boarding passes from!
The location is perfect as we got a real sense of Portland living. It is right in one of neighborhood districts, walking distance to many shops and restaurants as well as Mt. Tabor Park and very conveniently located to all of the downtown attractions as well.
John was fantastic to work with, easy to contact and so friendly. I got a real sense that he was as happy to share his home as we were to enjoy it. The rates are very reasonable too!
This was a long-awaited and anticipated trip for us- my son's 8th birthday, my first marathon, and the first time we traveled to visit my brother and sister as a family of five. It exceeded all our expectations and having John's Home in the Hawthorne to experience it all made the trip that much sweeter! We can't wait to return when my brother gets married next summer! -

DallasSuper cute and clean house in Hawthorne area!
Left on 10/02/2012 for a stay in September 2012
The home is in a great location so you can easily walk to many places in the Hawthorne! The neighborhood is very quiet and super cute! We could even jog to Mt. Tabor from here for a nice run overlooking the city! We loved how clean and new the house was when we arrived. The beds were comfy and the linens were really nice. The kitchen had everything you could possibly need and was nicely updated! The back porch is a really nice place to sit with a morning coffee or afternoon wine! We would def come back. John is an excellent host, answering all my questions and making sure we were able to get in the house okay. Everything was so fresh, clean, and organized! Thank you for letting us use your home! We would love to stay for longer next time!

Napa Valley, CaliforniaThis Is Living Well !!
Left on 09/20/2012 for a stay in September 2012
For our first visit to Portland we were a little apprehensive about staying in a residential area as opposed to the city center "where all the action is". In the end we couldn't have chosen a better place than The Hawthorne. First of all the house is immaculate. As the retired contractor and furniture maker half of this team I would give the Hawthorne House five stars out of five. The attention to detail is amazing, the quality of the appliances and fixtures is very high end and the livability factor is way up there. This is as trouble free, comfortable and relaxing as accommodations can get. And the area ?? After the first evening in downtown Portland (which we promptly named "The Zoo") we were delighted to return to East Hawthorne every night for it's fantastic old town neighborhoods and the myriad of restaurants and stores stretching for very walkable blocks both on Hawthorn and Division. It would take a dozen visits to see them all. We stayed at the Hawthorne for five days out of our ten day tour of Crater Lake, Portland and the Oregon Coast and we would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone considering a stay in Portland. This is living well !!! John and Donnie, Napa Valley, California

ChicagoFabulous Portland Rental
Left on 07/29/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Located in the Hawthorne area of Portland this rental was truly fabulous. Great location between Mt. Tabor and trendy shopping/bar/restaurant area. Super easy to get 'downtown' too, either by car or bus. The owners truly thought of every little detail. They were also very available for any and all (inane) questions. The rooms were airy and spacious, the decor charming. The back deck and yard were great, nicely landscaped with chairs, a table, umbrella, pretty candles, flowers. Inside there were bathroom toiletries, fresh towels, a zillion kitchen utensils & the basics, laundry facilities - including detergent, a wireless printer, flat screen TVs, scotch tape (!), extra blankets and pillows - i could go on and on. I would love for my own house to be this organized. Extremely comfortable, we had too much space almost - a nice problem to have. You could comfortably sleep 6, I think owner has some crib/baby set-ups as well. A+
