      First class Holiday accommodation

Left on 03/15/2013 for a stay in September 2012

As a family, we have been visiting Dolphin View at Portmahomack for the past 7 years; since we live in Dover, the furthest distance possible from within the UK, that might give the reader some idea of just how good these cottages are. At the time of year we traditionally go there (just after the schools have gone back for the autumn term) the beaches are empty so the dog thinks he's in Heaven, there's plenty to see and do and the welcome from Sandra & Stewart Smart, the cottages' genial hosts, is more like visiting old friends than any kind of business deal.

Each cottage (there are four) has three bedrooms - one double, one twin and one bunk bed with two single mattresses, a generous sized bathroom, huge lounge/diner/kitchen area with a dining table set into an alcove so that meal times are spent gazing over the Dornoch Firth watching time drift endlessly past. Evening sunsets are always magnificent - Portmahomack is almost unique in as much as it looks west despite being on the east coast, affording shelter from the North Sea and spectacular sights as the sun goes down. For those touring the Highlands, this is an idyllic location that affords the visitor peace and quiet and a real opportunity to relax away from the rat race that is modern-day Britain.

If tranquility cannot be done without entirely, Inverness and the Great Glen are just 45 minutes away in the car, but my advice is to stock up from the local supermarkets (there's a very good Morrisons nearby, and at alness) and stay in the vicinity of Easter Ross. Weather-wise - well, it's Scotland, so one knows what to expect, but even dreary and wet days can be passed locally without resorting to the British traditional standbys in case of wet weather. The Pictish museum in a converted local church is top notch, and Tarbet Ness in general is a treasure trove for those who like exploring.

Portmahomack has a small general store/Post Office, an excellent café in Carnegie Hall, just 200 yards from the Dolphin View cottages, and an absolute gem of a restaurant in the Oystercatcher, also just a short stroll from the cottages. The cottages themselves have a small TV, radio/cassette system and a kitchen that will suffice in most areas but no wifi facilities. If you absolutely have to have internet connection, the café in Carnegie Hall is wifi enabled (free!). Tain and alness also both have internet cafés at reasonable rates. I thoroughly recommend Dolphin View as a base for any holiday in Northern Scotland. Have fun.
