Description from the manager
Villa Torrefano is a stunning Aristocratic villa in a fabulous cliff-top position overlooking the Ionian Sea, and the island “Isola Capo Passero”, the most southern point of Sicily, the place where the Ionian Sea meets the Mediterranean sea. It would be difficult to ask for a more delightful setting. Torrefano is perfect for relaxing holidays. With the possibility of organising a cook, you might find that you will never stray very far from home, even though its proximity to the stunning baroque towns of Syracuse, Noto and Ragusa Ibla make it an excellent base for a cultural exploration of this UNESCO World Heritage area. Bristol, EnglandMiss Haversham (of Great Expectations) meets hippy commune
Left on 11/06/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This enormous villa has great potential, spoilt by poor maintenance, and lack of attention to detail.
We were a party of six adults and three children under 4. The children had a whale of a time sliding about the 1,800 square foot main salon on the six-foot square cushions spread throughout the property. The ceiling in this room was 25 feet high - a ballroom! The bedrooms were to match, enormous, with 15 foot ceilings. So we had plenty of choice when it came to deciding where to sleep.
The villa is, we were told, owned by a Contessa, now living in Florence. In the main bedroom there was an art deco marble tiled bathroom with mirrors on all four walls. This, no doubt, allowed the Contessa to examine her anatomy from every conceivable angle...
The villa is set on a cliff overlooking Portopalo bay, with stunning views of the Ionian and Mediterranean, as well as the island off Portopalo itself. You could watch the sunrise over the sea, and, even though this was early November, you could sit in the sun on the terrace until lunch-time.
However, there were lots of drawbacks to the property.
Despite a request to the managing agent in Holland on 5th September, checking that the two cots, mentioned in the villa specification, for our 1 and 2 year old babies were available, neither were available when we arrived on Sunday 28th October at 7.00 p.m. One cot was produced by 9.00 p.m., but the other took 24 hours to appear. This was completely unsatisfactory.
The villa was in a poor condition, even bearing in mind that it was an old building. All the shutters at the front of the building were defective. The outer shutter slats did not open or close. The wooden inner doors had fallen, and were difficult to open, close or lock. The front door lock was defective, and the door could only be latched shut. The decorative state was very poor, down to the bare wood on some of the window frames, and with large patches of flaked paint on parts of the interior decorations.
At night, the lighting was very gloomy. Many of the bulbs in the fittings were missing or blown, and no-one had bothered to check or replace them. The general condition of the property was dirty, and we had to remove our own rubbish. As a result there was a problem with ants, flies and mosquitoes. The concierge's dog was a nuisance, especially with young children around.
None of this was acceptable in any property, especially one costing 1,600 euros a week.
