The Amalfi Coast, Italy
is a beautiful 50 kilometres stretch of mountainous coastline situated from Sorrento peninsula and Salerno, just south of Naples, in the region of Campania.
This coastline is dotted with small picturesque villages and towns stacked precariously on steep, pale rocky cliffs plunging sheer into the Mediterranean Sea.
The famous islands of Capri and Ischia are nearby, both of stunning natural beauty.
The Amalfi Coast has been one of Italy's major tourist attractions for decades. It is regarded by many as world's most beautiful stretch of coast.
Today tourism is the main industry, and the area has numerous luxury hotels and a wide selection of restaurants, bars, craft shops, boutiques, boat trips, and more.
For those who like to drive, one of the highlights of a trip to this area is the romantic coastal road itself.
The narrow serpentine road clings to the coastal cliffs, soaring and plunging and winding around the towering cliffs that fall sheer into the sea. By car or bus, this road offers some dramatic and breathtaking scenery.
At some places it is so narrow that two vehicles can hardly pass and have to back up to yield way to each other.About the Amalfi Coast National Geographic wrote:
The coast line around Amalfi is quite simply breathtaking. Cliffs plunge steeply into the azure sea with picturesque villages perched on their rocky sides, some of which until recently, were only accessible by boat.
The views out across the Mediterranean sea are stunning and this piece of coastline can quite rightly justify its claim to be one of the most scenic stretches in the world. (National Geographic)
POSITANO is known as one of the most beautiful jewel of the Amalfi Coast.
Positano was a relatively poor fishing village during the first half of the 20th century.
It began to attract large numbers of tourists in the 1950s, especially after John Steinbeck published his essay about Positano in Harper's Bazaar in May, 1953: 'Positano bites deep', Steinbeck wrote. 'It is a dream place that isnât quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.'Its enchanting position, the beautiful houses and narrow streets give you an idea of Mediterranean harmony and charm. Beloved by artists from everywhere, it has enchanting views, shopping and strolls by the sea. Its wonderful boutiques have made Positano fashion internationally renowned.

North Easton, MassachusettsGreat Location
Left on 11/16/2012 for a stay in September 2012
My husband and I, as well as seven other members of my extended family stayed in both apartments for the last week of September. The apartment is in a great location, right in the heart of Positano, with easy access to beaches, grocery shops, restaurants, and the bus line for travel between amalfi towns. The apartment is not what I would call "luxury" lodging, but everything was simple and clean. We didn't spend a lot of time inside anyways and were mostly looking for a clean place to sleep. Gaetano, the owner, was very nice and accommodating with suggestions for local area options for activities and restaurants. The only thing that left a bad taste in our mouth was finding out how much the parking was. We should have inquired prior to our arrival, but it is not specified on the website. Traveling with 9 people, we had three cars and were charged 25 euros a night per car. This amounted to 525 euros, close to $700 USD just for parking. This seems unusually high considering hotels in Rome and the major cities charged less than that. Perhaps its standard for the amalfi Coast, but for first time travelers to that area, it was quite surprising since we did not have any head's up about it.

The host was really nice and was available anytime we had a question or needed anything. I was also pleasantly surprised how nice the place was upon arrival. Looks better than the pictures and there's a beautiful view from the patio. Very functional and spotless. I will definitely stay here if I return to Positano!

The villa is absolutely fantastic
We appreciated the great location. The apartment is nearby Positano walk area, in a really quiet place, far away from the busiest part of the town. The port, beaches and shops are only few minutes stroll if you don't mind doing steps, but the villa is also convenient to the bus down.
The villa is comfortable and full equipped with everything you need in a house. It has a patio and a beautiful terrace with a breathtaking view.
We stayed in Positano for 5 days with two american friends and we had a wonderful time
Gaetano is a perfect host, always nice to us and very helpful. We thank him for all the good recommendation he gave on restaurant and places to visit.
Thanks Gaetano and we hope to be back soon.

This was one od our best memories for our anniversary holiday. We had 7 close australian friends meet us in Italy and we spent our 2nd week here. We found Gaetano very helpful in recommending things to do and places to eat.
Even on the last day when the coffee pot exploded and stained the kitchen walls, Gaetano was very understanding.
I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it.

We really enjoyed our 5-day stay at Villa Maristella, not least owing to Gaetano's constant willingness to provide assistance and advice. We found the appartments comfortable and practical, particulalry with two families and the ability to keep both areas separate during quiet times. The villa is located 10min away from Positano's busiest area, provides easy access to all the main attractions (as long as you don't mind stairs) and has a number of great restaurants in the close vicinity.

Villa Maristella was perfect for 10 of us (4 couples and 2 singles). We all had our own bedroom and bathroom which were clean and comfortable. There were two lovely terraces with beautiful views of Positano. We love to swim and it was 400 plus steps to the Il Fornillo beach but we managed that and enjoyed the banana lounges and umbrellas. Certainly not for going backwards and forwards though! Gaetano was an excellent host and even organised for a local restaurant to deliver dinner to our terrace for my 60th birthday. Thank you also for the bottle of Limoncello. He was always available for any problems or advice. Excellent restaurants very closeby.

This is a perfect 10 in every way. We rented the entire villa for 3 families and the 14 of us had a great time. There is plenty of room with 3 kitchens 2 decks and views that never end. This is the best vacation spot we have every visited. Gaetano (the hands on owner) was absolutely fantastic and help us optimize our trip and helped with our activities. I can not recommend this villa enough! We will definitely be back! Thanks Gaetano! Dave

Our group of twelve stayed at Gaetano's beautiful Villa very comfortably. There could not have been anything more enjoyable! The Villa has everything you want in a home away from home. The Villa is located close to shopping, restaurants, grocery, and a good walk or local bus to the beach and port. There was nothing to complain about for sure.

Left on 06/14/2012 for a stay in April 2012
The house is a wonderful vacation rental.
The house is spotlessly clean. The kitchen is well stocked. The location is great - with an easy walk to a small market and great restaurants that are removed from the tourist-y center of town. However, it's still only a 10 minute walk down the steps to get to the beach, port and center of Positano with more shops and restaurants.
Easy walk down from the main road/bus stop as well - making it easy to travel to Sorento and almalfi, along with other nearby towns.
If you want to stay in Positano - I highly recommend Gaetano's house. -

Positano is breathtakingly beautiful. The villa, with it's fabulous view of the sea, is comfortable for a large group. Each bedroom has its own updated bathroom. Though the rooms are not as large as they appear in the photos, the villa provides a relaxed, comfortable enviornment. The kitchens are well stocked with cooking utensils. Markets, shops and restaurants are within walking distance.
Gaetano is a wonderful host, going that extra mile to help us with our needs. Only complaint was that Wifi didn't work for our iPads. -

Left on 06/02/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We stayed in Positano with a large group (12 women) at Gaetano's villa. The reviews on Trip advisor were great and the price was right but we were disappointed. We expected luxury and that's not what we got. In fact, we questioned whether it was the same villa we saw online because it's so much smaller than it appears in the photos. There are two levels for guests and the lower level is a little nicer than the upper level but not by much. Everything is clean but outdated. The old stove didn't work very well but Gaetano fixed it for us on two occasions. Gaetano is an extremely nice man who speaks broken English. Due to the communication barrier, he is not able to provide much help or information. He promised wifi but it was sporadic. He washed our towels once during the week and replaced them with fresh ones. That's it. Cleaning/housekeeping is not provided. You have to buy your own toilet paper, paper towels and napkins, although the kitchen is stocked with dishes, glasses, cups and utensils. The elevation makes the views absolutely gorgeous but you must be able to walk down the hill to get to the beach - and up again. All told, there are much nicer places to stay in Positano but they are more expensive. In all honestly, I would have given it a lower than average rating but I realize that I'm very particular and if you're on a budget and do not have high expectations, this villa would be acceptable.

I booked a stay in this apartment online and from start to finish, the experience was wonderful. Gaetano answered emails promptly and was literally waiting for us outside when we arrived. The apartment was perfect for our family of five, with two bathrooms, two quiet bedrooms and a pullout couch--clean and well-equipped, and Gaetano was so helpful with instructions and suggestions. We stayed over Easter weekend and he even brought us homemade pie and Columba cake. I definitely recommend this villa--it is what it looks like on the website, with fabulous views and a central location. Ahh, Positano...a presto! Take comfortable shoes--lots of steps!

We recently took our 5 children to Italy (ages 13 to 22) and stayed in villas in both Rome and Positano. Hands down, our stay in Positano made our trip. Villa Maristella is fabulous- clean, well appointed, great bathrooms. And Gaetano is the perfect host. We had to get 11 people from Positano to Rome and Gaetano went out of his way to help us. We hope we are fortunate enough to visit Gaetano again some day!

Gaetano welcomed us personally. He took the time to show us each room and helped me set up my computer which I would not have been able to do alone. The Villa was ideal for four people, very clean and well kept. We spent a wonderful week here and would highly recommend this location to anyone who wants a true flavor of small town Italy. You are about 7,000 feet above sea level so walking can be a challenge for seniors. There is a local bus that goes around the whole village and plenty of cabs so transportation is not any problem.
Gaetano, Thank you so much for sharing your Villa wih us as we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with our two friends Evelyn and Scott. Shirley and Tom O'Hara

A group of 9 women stayed in this villa in Spetember of this year. The villa was roomy and clean. The patio area and the view were perfect. We ate all of our meals here so we could enjoy the view.Gaetano was the perfect host, making sure we had everything we needed, fixing our internet connection which we lost during a lightening storm. Gaetano was so helpful with travel advice and directions to get to places in town. There are over 600 stairsteps to get into the main part of town and that helped work off all of the pasta meals we prepared. There is also a bus that stops a few meters from the door of the villa - at The Best Western.Gaetano's wife is a clothing designer and owns a shop in the bottom floor of the villa. Be sure to visit her store.
I would reccommend this villa to anyone. -

My mother and I stayed in Gaetano's apartment for a week at the end of July and loved every moment! Gaetano was honestly the best host I have come into contact with. He was only ever an intercom call away and so, so helpful and friendly. He was very flexible with our check-in time, making life easier. Gaetano also went to the trouble of booking a restaurant reservation for us, which turned out to be the best restaurant I have ever eaten at! The apartment was spotless and huge! It was equipped with everything we needed, including bottles of limoncello for purchase on the little wine rack in the kitchen. Fabulous water pressure in the shower too. The apartment was in a beautiful spot (mind you, the whole of Positano is beautiful), but it's next to a landmark, which makes it easy for directions and letting people know where you're staying. There were 2 mini markets close by, which was great for picking up fresh fruit and other bits and pieces. It's a pleasant 15 minute walk to the beach at the bottom of the windy road - alternatively there are many, many steps to take down to the bottom. There is also an internal bus that stops right outside the apartment - it's great. We had a wonderful view from our apartment too. I honestly could not have asked for a better location, better view, better host, or better apartment to stay in. Thank you so, so much Gaetano for making our stay just fabulous!

My wife, daughter, and I stayed in Villa Mare from august 13-20, 2011. Our stay couldn't have been better - the owner, Gaetano, went out of his way to make sure that we had a wonderful experience in Positano.
We arrived during ascension Day weekend. On the night of the fireworks, Gaetano actually invited us upstairs to his home so that we could have a panoramic view of the festivities - his family went out of their way to make us feel at home. We would recommend this villa and its location strongly and would return in a heartbeat - in fact, we're already thinking about coming back next summer! -

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Maristella. Gaetano is so hospitable and helpful in every way. The villa is clean, well appointed, spacious, and convenient to the bus down to the beach and shops. The villa is only about 30 steps up from the street, which is nothing compared to many places in Positano. The view is superbly picturesque. We enjoyed being able to prepare our own breakfasts and an occasional dinner which we enjoyed on our private terrace. Also nice to have a washing machine--dryers aren't needed, with the portable clothes lines provided, clothes dry quickly on the spacious terrace.

Left on 07/21/2011 for a stay in June 2011
I stayed in Villa Mare with two friends, the two bedroom villa which is part of the Villa Maristella group owned by Gaetano. We absolutely loved the villa, it was a nice size and had a pretty deck with a view to the ocean. It's about 15 mins walk to the heart of the old town, which is better as the village fringes are lest tourist-overrun and have nicer restaurants and shops on the hillsides to explore. The site is elevated so affords some great views. Gaetano was a star, he was so accommodating, and available at any time for advice on things to do and see, and how to get around. He gave me a fabulous espresso in his shop downstairs too! Was a great spot and a wonderful experience. Highly recommend it.

Left on 06/17/2011 for a stay in June 2011
Our family of 5 adults recently stayed in the Sole apartment in Positano. We actually occupied 2 small attached apartments which together had 3 bedrooms and 3 3- piece baths. Gaetano met us at the door, as we had hired a driver to bring us in from Naples. The apartment was spotless and well equipped with kitchen supplies, although there were just too many good restaurant options for us to want to make any full meals there. A washing mashine and drying rack were available in the apartment. All rooms were very comfortable, and the balcony had a front view of the ocean and west side of Positano. This was where any free time was spent, enjoying wine and local limoncello and one of the world's most famous vistas.
Location is important when considering accomodations in Positano. While is desirable to not be too far from the beach and the "centre" of things, it is also nice to be somewhat removed from the noise of the restaurants and clubs at night. The apartment was about a 10 or 15 minute stroll to the beach, depending on how distracted one got with all the shops along the way. Our favorite restaurant was just one street below us, the Il Saraceno D'Oro where we ended up eating almost every night. A great continental breakfast was available 2 doors down at the Hotel Gabrisa for 7 Euro which included one's choice of unlimited coffee, cappucino etc. and tables on the water side. What an amazing way to start the day.
Positano at night is magical. This was a highlight of our 2 week trip to Italy, and we would highly recommend the apartment. -

Apartment was charming and comfortable and it had all of the kitchen supplies we needed (and more). The best part is that everything we needed was there, and the apartment is very well-kept and clean. With 4 people, we had 2 apartments that shared a common entry, and it was ideal. We had plenty of room to move around, and the beds were very comfortable.

The location is also wonderful...it feels like you are a local and it is just a few flights of stairs away from some wonderful restaurants like Saracena D'Oro making it very convenient. The local bus also stops nearby making it easy to get around the town. Gaetano was also a great host accommodating all our needs, even arranging a car to drive us to Naples.

Chicago, ILBeautiful View, Wonderful Hospitality
Left on 10/28/2010 for a stay in August 2010
We traveled with two adults and three kids to Positano and the hospitalitity of the owner, Gaetano, helped make our trip a memorable one. As a first-time visitor to Positano and Italy, Gaetano helped advise on the best travel routes to Positano as well as assistance in arranging a ride directly to their front-door. Once there, we were provided a detailed walk-through of the apartment and details on the stove, laundry, TV, and wireless network. During our stay, Gaetano also stopped by several times to drop off fresh fruits and vegetables from his garden - really a nice way to make us feel welcome. The town is incredibly beautiful, beaches were great, food was outsatnding. Small itens but worth mentioning, the apartment slept five of us but probablt better suited to four, as the extra bed/futon is in the main living area and some what of a small space. Also, location was a good walk from the beaches but once we worked out the bus system, it was much easier to return back up to the villa. Overall, a above-avergae location and accomodations. Thanks Gaetano!

Gaetano is a very good host and ensures that you have all the information you need for your stay. The apartment is in a great location and you have a fantastic view of the coast. My criticism would be of the inside of the flat itself, I feel completely mis-lead by the photos on the website. In reality the apartment is very small and dark. The photos also give it a far more luxurious appearance than in reality. We had the terrace to ourselves but in some circumstances you would have to share this with the neighbours which I would not have been pleased about. Overall, a great spot and a clean and tidy apartment but don't be too taken in by the pictures!

We stayed here 6 adults and an infant. Everything was very good and very clean. Gaetano was helpful in all matters. The location is great. In proximity to nice restaurants and close to the main street (not many steps to the apartment). The view from the terrace is excellent. I can for sure recommend this place.

This is a fairly spacious set of two apartments linked together with excellent bathrooms and kitchens. Unfortuntately the Wifi did not work and Geatano did not fix it until the final day of our stay, despite promising to. There was no reduction in our fee despite this being one of the reasons for staying here. Several lights did not work. One of the rooms at the back is very musty. The apartment is a very long way from the beach, from Positano and from restaurants. If you plan to visit the beach or Positano I would recommend staying elsewhere. There is a very noisy school directly across the road and the view is inhibited by trees and power lines. They wanted full payment upon our arrival which we refused. Parking is E18 per day.

Villa Mara was wonderful and Positano heaven on earth! Gaetano is a gracious and excellent landlord. He is pleasant, very helpful and accommodating. The apartment was wonderful, clean, spacious and has a great view. I regretted the fact that we had to leave and definitely want to return some day. I highly recommend a visit to Positanto and renting with Gaetano!

The apartment was really great. It has 2 double bedrooms with ensuites.Gaetano was a wonderful host & greeted us with a very warm welcome. The kitchen had everything & the eating area on the balcony was fantastic.
It was a little way down to the town but very easy & we tended to catch the internal bus back on some days it is very cheap -tickets are available at the tobacconists.
There are 2 local supermarkets & plenty of nearby restaraunts.
There is only one tip to pass on & that is you arrive by bus you need to get off at the 1st Positano bus stop. Then ask directions but is an easy downhill trip (right near the Best Western Hotel.
We had a superb holiday & would recommend it to any one.
There is no doubt we will stay again on our return.
Happy Travelling

The Sole and Stella apartments we rented are the equal of any other apartments we have rented in Positano. They had everything required for a very relaxed and comfortable vacation. And the location is superb. Just a few steps to the road and then an easy walk to all the majot attractions of the town, plus the bus stop if we needed it.

Hampstead, NCPerfect location with a beautiful sea view!
Left on 05/12/2010 for a stay in February 2010
We were fortunate to spend 12 days at Mare in late Feb/early March. The owner and his family were very hospitable. We made arrangements through the owner for a ride to and from Garibaldi Station in Naples. The apartment is modern, spacious and has plenty of amenities including digital cable, internet and a whirlpool tub. The furnishings are practical and comfortable. It was handy to have a washing machine and dishwasher. The covered patio looks out over the sea and area known as Fornillo. We opened the window and sliding door to take advantage of the breeze and enjoy the view from the living and dining areas. Mare is within walking distance of the bus stop, several great restaurants, groceries and shops. Mare is truly a central location to so many key areas and services. We hired a local guide Walking With the Gods for several tours. Some visitors may not like the steps and winding hills, but we were happy to have the daily exercise and views. We will definitely return to Positano! We would certainly stay at Mare again.

The apartment was very well appointed with everything we needed. The beds
were comfortable, the kitchen was nice, and the bathrooms were spacious--
everything was clean. The town of Positano is wonderful. While we didn't stay
there during the summer beach season, there was still plenty to see and do--
good restaurants and spectacular views. It was simple to take a boat to Capri
or to get to Amalfi, too. This apartment is quite high up in the cliffs of
Positano, so there were lots of steps (500) to the beach. We didn't mind.
There were shops and restaurants nearby, and the walk to the centre of town
and to either of the beaches was always enjoyable. Gaetano was a gracious
and helpful host.
