Washington, DCNot a detached house, lots of bugs and mosquitos
Left on 09/04/2012 for a stay in August 2012
The villa is not a stand-alone house as advertised. The living room terrace is separated by a half-fence and some planted bushes from the B&B; terrace. Although B&B; guests were quiet, the proximity of their terrace and a balcony right next to our side made us worry about an noise we would make after 10 pm. All the rooms were just fine, but solar water heater had scalding hot water and the floors, while they looked clean, were too dirty for barefoot. Kitchen was fine size-wise. Unlike other places I've stayed, the kitchen had zero conditments like salt, oil, etc. so had to buy everything. Only four wine glasses. Outdoor space had a small dining table for 4 maximum. Outdoor space needs better outdoor lounging furniture. The views are nice because they face Positano (no view of Vesuvius on that side of the peninsula). There was no grill or microwave. Below the terrace is someone's garden, but past it is a rather old waste treatment/discharge area. The place had a huge amount of flies, bugs and mosquitos, so bring spray and coil. They had an ant problem, but owner came and sprayed. A walk just outside the villa leads to two beach establishments on Gavitella beach. The umbrella and chairs at One Fire were free for villa guests, which was very nice. The beach requires 287 steps down/up, but better than Positano and amalfi because it is a cove, so less people. Step off a ladder to swim, no standign in water, swim area has a protective barrier quite a few feet out. Most beaches apart from main beaches in Positano and amalfi require 300 or so steps.
Praiano itself is not great. No pedestrian area, only walk along the heavily trafficked main road, nothing to see. However, food/wine store and a couple of restaurants and bus stop are right there.
Overall, I'd look around at other options before booking this one again, although not sure what one can get for the same price.Response from Cutty Sark Viaggi International T.O.Srl - 10/01/2012

The house has never been advertised as stand-alone house, but as 2-storey villa, as it is. We are sorry, that you found just 4 wine glasses but is is normal that during the season some glasses/plates will be broken. In these cases our assistant, once informed, will take the necessary steps. Regarding the supply of food, spices ecc. it would have been sufficient to let us have a small list before the arrival. Every guest has a different taste. Praiano has several pedestrian areas, but of course most shops are along the main road. The house does not have a solar water heater. The bowl is just a deposit of water for emergency cases. Being at the other side of the peninsula it is obvious that the Vesuvius can not be seen from any place in the Amalfi Coast.

57049Villa Marina - The best views in Praiano
Left on 05/15/2012 for a stay in April 2012
We recently stayed at the Villa Marina in Praiano and had a wonderful stay. The villa is located in a beautiful spot, with views all the way up the coastline to Positano and Capri. It is really the best spot in Praiano, with no other buildings below it, only a lovely garden, sea, and sky.
The town of Praiano is a wonderful place to set up a visit to the amalfi Coast. It is a small village in between amalfi and Positano, and along all the main bus lines in the area. We found the people to be very hospitable and pleasant. They made us feel right at home and safe. We were able to do daytrips to all the main destinations, and return to our peaceful home base each evening, away from the crowds.
The best things about the villa were the views and the quiet, beautiful location. It also was quite spacious, with plenty of room for 6 people. One of our favorite features was the very large patio and upper balcony, where we spent each morning and evening having our meals, doing yoga, and drinking the wonderful local wine. The building style is a lovely traditional architecture with vaulted ceilings in every room. The decor is simple but tasteful, with Vietri tile featured in the bathrooms.
As the previous reviewer said, there are a few things that are a bit dated. The kitchen was adequate for our purposes but somewhat small. There is no manual for the use of the villa, so we recommend getting instructions from the owner upon arrival about how to operate equipment / appliances, negotiate the recycling schedule, etc.
Overall we had a wonderful experience staying at the Villa Marina, and would recommend it to our family and friends. Not only is it on one of the best spots along the amalfi Coast, it is quite affordable for a group. It was the perfect home base for our 12 days on the amalfi Coast.
