Good price for what you get

Left on 04/12/2013 for a stay in April 2013

We spent 4 nights in the Orchid Room. The layout is very beautiful and for $85 a night it is a great deal; however, there are some things I wish that didn't jive too well with me:

      - There is no air conditioning. Granted, I am aware this fairly standard, however, in catering to travelers who aren't used to the heat and humidity, investing in even a decently working cooler as opposed to only ceiling fans and 1 standing fan would have made sleeping significantly more manageable. It became so hard for me to sleep through the heat that had I found a decently affordable hotel that would take us on our last night I would have paid the money to get a hotel with an air conditioner even though this was already paid for.

      - We were only given 2 bath towels for 4 nights stay with no extras. 2 people taking multiple showers a day coming to and from the beach and outings, we had to continually use our used towels. By the 4th day you can imagine how we really did not want to use these towels to dry our clean bodies. Also, I am glad we planned ahead and brought 2 beach towels from our Honolulu hotel just in case there weren't any at the Orchid Room. There was just 1 and it didn't look appealing to use.

      - You are forewarned about the parking situation. I prepared myself for that but wasn't as prepared for the close to worst case scenario coming true. We were "lucky" enough to find 1 last permit parking in the farthest possible spot from the room. This seems petty but that truly is quite a ways to trek and just not something I want to deal with again.

      - I couldn't find facial tissue anywhere in the unit. Thankfully there was a second roll of toilet paper, but never found any Kleenex.

      - The comforter on the bed looked nice but was completely covered in stains and spots. I am not entirely certain how clean it was nor did I really want to know.

Overall, you get what you pay for. In the end served its purpose for us. I came to find out how much I require air conditioning and how much I love clean towels. I wouldn't deter someone from staying here its just that there are some things I would have considered a little more than when I originally booked this stay.

      Shannon,

Thank you for taking the time to review our property. Yes, we are very competitively priced and pride ourselves on providing a comfortable, clean and, equipped home base for visitors to explore this beautiful island.

I would like to apologize for the inadequate amount of towels provided for your stay. It is our custom to have 4 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 wash cloths and 2 beach towels for each check in. I wish you had felt comfortable to call me to let me know that there were not enough, as I live down the street and would easily have brought some additional towels over. I have spoken with the cleaning service to reiterate how important it is to have all the towels at checkin time.

Yes, it is very rare to have AC in homes or condos on Kauai. Open windows, allowing the pervasive trade winds in, and the use of fans, are the common forms of cooling used on Kauai. I can agree, coming from a different climate, the temp in the 70-80's combined with the humidity does take some time to adjust to.

Thank you for bring the condition of the comforter to our attention. Although it is cleaned regularly it had been stained and it has been replaced.

For the benefit of future guests, I would like to say that parking can be as close as a few steps from the door to an approximately 1-2 minute walk. The farthest parking lot would not be any more of a walk then is customary to walk from the main entrance of a hotel to your room. If a guest has mobility issues, there is an opportunity to be dropped off steps from the unit, while the other guest parked a little further down.

Again, I would like to thank you for your comments, which have helped us improve the experience for our future guests.

      Much Aloha,
      Kelly

Left on 05/08/2011 for a stay in April 2011

I thought everything was pretty straight forward--how to check in, where things were, parking, etc. I was fooled by photos--I thought I saw the place had a 2nd bedroom , but I guess it was the just the way the photos were taken [behind the separation divider]. It didn't matter, since it was just the two of us--just stating.

Things I would have wanted to know before I arrived:
      (a) no toilet paper would be in the bathroom [what a bummer that was to go running in there and find none or Kleenex either, after traveling all day and you are exhausted?]

      (b) remotes do not work [and it's not the batteries either]

      (c) no kid-friendly channels [I would have brought more Dvd's for my 5-year-old daughter].

      (d) freezer did not work [I had to throw away $20 worth of Hawaiian sorbet because it would not keep it melted--too much ice had built up in the freezer].

Overall, it was nice to be away from the crowds of the big cities--it did make for long(er) drives, and the area was very pretty. I was surprised how much traffic that road gets...but it was pleasant to wake up to the vocals of the chickens and other birds of the area.

Yes, THE ORCHID ROOM is our studio rental with one King Bed, and a "casual kitchenette", which includes a small apartment size refrigerator. We do have our larger unit, THE ALOHA LOFT which has a king bed and a queen bed, full kitchen and laundry for a group of 1 to 4 guests. I can assure future guests that we always stock this unit with a starter kit of toilet paper (2), paper towels, soap, coffee filters, and a kitchen sponge. I apologize if any of these amenities were not provided for your stay. Also our TV is equipped with Cable, with the regular channel selection, and a DVD player for guests convenience.

      Outstanding place for amazing Value!!

Left on 05/02/2011 for a stay in February 2011

My husband and I had booked this place without having any references. We had booked 3 other places throughout the Hawaiian islands, during this trip, and this one looked too good to be true. The Orchid room was the cheapest and by far the most beautiful, clean, well-located place! We had absolutely no problems.

We walked to watch the sunset every night, once by the hotel, once on Hideway Beach, once at the Queen's Bath. Amazing views!!!

The only negative (if you can call it that) was that there were no coffee filters for the coffee maker. However, we did run into the lady that took care of the place and she grabbed us a few on the second day.

Overall, a fantastic place! We loved the Orchid room. Definitely our favourite place we stayed at in Hawaii. Thanks!

I am happy to hear that you really enjoyed our unit and this beautiful island we call home. Those sunsets across the street are so intense and with the background of Bali Hai.... spectacular. It sounds like you slowed down and enjoyed island life; that is what makes the great memories! Look forward to having you back as return guests. Mahalo!

We stayed at the Orchid Room for four days and felt right at home. The decor was very tasteful. We found the kitchenette good for re-heating and keeping things cool. So nice to not have to go out and find breakfast - just relax! Good size bathroom. All of the little extras (books, puzzles, beach gear) were really appreciated. The location is close to the beach, but requires a drive to the nearest stores for provisions. Didn't hear any crowing roosters, but wouldn't have minded - after all they remind you that you're away from the city on holiday!

Great Rental in amazing location of North Kauai!

Left on 03/10/2011 for a stay in November 2010

We stayed in The Orchid Room in November 2010. The location was great as we spent a lot of time on the north part of the island. Easy access to The Kalalau Trail(amazing hike), Hanalei town and bay, and numerous secluded beaches throughout the north coast. Our favorite activity was sitting on the bluff across from the condo and watching surfers at sunset.

The condo itself was very nice, clean, and had a very comfortable Hawaiian vibe. It was also very affordable compared to most other accomodations we saw on the island. Great waterfall views from the lanai. You can walk to the beach in less than 10 minutes and can drive anywhere along the north coast in less than a half hour.

I can't recommend this place enough and we can't wait to get back to Kauai to do it all again!

The Jelly to my Jam! Perfect Spot / Wallet Friendly

Left on 09/29/2010 for a stay in July 2010

Our first trip was in June 2010, and we loved it so much that we skipped Maui on our return trip a month later and came back to the Orchid Room!

The Orchid Room feels like it is your own little home on the tiny island of Kauai.

      Here's a list of Great's:
      - Very private - perfect for couples
      - Shopping center down the road that has everything that you need
      - 2 beaches that are in "walking" distance (the 1st beach you have to go through a resort down many stairs, and the second is a fun, but steep hike/climb down - but totally worth it!)
      - Wonderful morning view of the cloud-topped mountains
      - Comfy bed with rad curtains
      - Internet is very fast
      - Big, clean bathroom

      Short list of Bad's:
      - Parking can be cumbersome, but sometimes a 3 minute walk to your car is just what you need
      - Thin walls so you will hear your neighbors if they are being loud
      - That's it!

Checking in/out couldn't be any simpler. It is a small place, so it is ideal for couples, but would be cramped with more than 3 people. For the price, this place can not be beat. It was actually cheaper than our car rental!

And by the way, you will have a nightly serenade by the islands amazing and diverse wildlife including roosters, which for us was a bonus! I even took a moment to record the sounds to bring home for a reminder on those stuffy overly air-conditioned nights at home.

nice room missing the little things

Left on 10/13/2009 for a stay in October 2009

There was holes in the screen next to bed that let mosquitos in all the time,
i didn't find it till we were leaving. The kitchenette was small, basically
useless. Didn't see a bbq area i thought it advertised. There is one parking
spot for two different rentals. And if the spot is taken your supposed to
park in another Permit spot, of course they were all full, and i spent ten
minutes driving around with no spot so i had to park in another tenants
spot. Its rude to no provide a place for a car when you pay for a room. Also
the 80 dollar cleaning fee, was more than a night rental. I stayed
somewhere else and it was 60 dollars a night with maid service FOR NO
EXTRA COST.... I just overall would never stay in your rip off palace again.
Also the bathroom smelled bad and the toilet leaked all night long and
never stopped in the three nights i stayed, what a waste of water, ruins a
peaceful nights sleeps, Oh yeah chickens near by never shut up from 2 am
till 6am So you must sleep with door closed and since AC is missing it
makes the room stuffy and unpleasent. You asked for my review, SO i
would never recommend or return to The orchid room.....

This unit is a popular and highly praised suite and I am sorry to hear of a negative experience. We are a family run, on-island, operation and take pride in our units being a place that we ourselves would relish renting on our own adventures.

We take reviews/comments seriously and will use them to improve our unit for future guests. We have repaired the screen and have fixed the toilet issue.

When guests rent our units using our online reservation system, the price break down, including price per night, tax and cleaning fee, is clearly shown. As is common here in Hawaii on vacation rentals, a separate cleaning fee is visibly passed on to guests. We charge our guests exactly what our cleaning service charges us. Also guests are required to agree to our Terms of Rental. Our "one car per unit" parking policy is included in our Rental Terms. To clarify, if the parking spot labeled 201 is occupied there are over 20 other spots labeled "permit" which are available for use. The walk to these other spots, although less convenient then the "201" spot in front, is no further then for an normal apartment or hotel, 1-3 minutes.

Please visit our website, www.theorchidroom.net for photos and info about our units. There you can find a picture of the casual kitchenette, which is great for heating up items, making coffee and keeping things cool in the 1/2 fridge. If guests feel they would like to do some real cooking and have a full kitchen for their stay we have our other unit THE ALOHA LOFT which has a full kitchen and laundry in the unit. As advertised there is a shared charcoal BBQ which is located in the center of HALE MOI complex, which all units may use. Also our units are equipped with high powered ceiling fans and have great cross ventilation to capture the persistent trade-winds. Because we are blessed with these winds, less then 2% of residential homes/condos have AC!

Ahhh..the wild chickens that are free to come and go. Yes, Kauai has many wild chickens that sometimes live in the bushes around Princeville. Even the 5 star St. Regis Resort, 10 minutes stroll down the road, has chickens on their property. It does take some getting use to but they do lend an exotic feel to the island:)

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about our units.

      Male Moi review

Left on 09/15/2009 for a stay in September 2009

      Hi Kelly,
My stay at the Hale Moi was fantastic, it was a lovely space and very comfortable. I was actually very surprised when I arrived at how cozy and inviting the feel and decor was - the pictures really didn't it justice. It was a great value for the space and location - I would highly recommend to people visiting Kauai.

There were a few things that surprised me, that would have made my stay more enjoyable, but overall it was a great place to rest my head over my holiday in Kauai!

      - In the post for the rental one past visitor offered that "it was so nice to wake up to the sound of tropical birds" there was no mention of roosters crowing EVERY morning in the wee hours of 4 am on - I am sure these were not the "tropical birds" your past tenant was talking about:) As a very sensitive sleeper, it would have been nice to have been prepared for this possibility and either had ear plugs on hand or chosen another place.

      - The pressure in the shower was very low and made showering rather a rather long and tedious experience. Also, the shower head (when hooked in place in the upper holder) flew off several times hitting me in the head, so I left it off and had to hand hold it for the week. I would think about having it replaced with one that is more secure and has better pressure.

      - There were several times when I came back at night to find that not only was the 201 rental space taken but all of the other permit spaces in the neighboring three lots as well. This was sort of a hassle - especially at night and I ended up parking in the private lot across the street (which had tow signs if not a resident signs everywhere) - I didn't know where else to park in the area that would be close and unrestricted. It would have been really nice to have a designated space I could have counted on at the end of each day - just to avoid a parking hassle (we have enough of that living in the city and like to leave that behind when on vacation.

Thank you and take care, Shayna

Since this review we have replaced the shower head with a new one that is secure and has more water pressure. And yes, there are chickens all over this island, just something that takes a little getting use to :). Also to address the parking, there is one spot marked 201 a few steps from the unit, if that one is occupied by THE ALOHA LOFT'S guest there are over 20 other permit spots available within the adjacent six lots, 1 to 2 minutes walk. Left on 06/19/2009 for a stay in June 2009

When we first arrived, I love the place. It was clean and nicely furnished with good size bathroom. For affordable price, I didn't mind the non-existent air conditioner even the fan remote says you can control the temperature?
Then the bothersome rooster started crowing at 4:00 in the morning til mid day. I was trying so hard to catch up with my sleep but it was impossible. We endured it 3 days and end up sleeping at our friend's place for a night. I might stay again but probably will try to find somewhere more quite...
      Otherwise, cute place to stay.

My husband and I stayed in the Orchid Room at Hale Moi from 1/27-2/3/09 and we absolutely loved it! It was exactly what we wanted, and the price could not be beat. The room is very clean with new wood floors, and the vaulted ceilings made the room feel larger than it is. The room is within walking distance to Hideaways Beach and is a short drive to the breath-taking Kalalau Trail - both of which I highly recommend visiting. The only amenity the room is lacking that we would have used is a washer and dryer; however, I believe the Loft has one, so if that is something you need I recommend renting the Loft. Parking can also get tricky if both units are rented while you're there, but that wasn't an issue for us.
