189541Perfect location with a fantastic view - all you can wish for!
Left on 02/21/2012 for a stay in August 2010
This vacation rental met with all of our demands and expectations - and the view swept our feet away! This was all we had dreamt of! Perfect – and definitely the right choice for us.
By means of good pieces of advice and long discussions with fellow Tripadvisor members we were made aware of the Pali Ke Kua condos and their pros and cons. Coming from abroad, and most likely it being our one and only time to Hawaii, it was essential for us not only to find the right area on Kauai but likewise the best suitable accommodation to meet our requirements of a genuine tropical feel, full ocean views, beach access and a bit away from the hustle and bustle. And this was all met by respectively Princeville/Hanalei and the Pali Ke Kua condos.
Pali Ke Kua 119 is located in a two-story, four-condo block as the left ground-floor corner condo - and is situated ocean front-row few yards from the edge of the steep cliff leading down to the private beach of these premises only. Fabulous ocean views were hence offered from all windows of the combined kitchen/living room as well as the small covered patio. We couldn't have asked for a better location - one of the absolute best ones in this complex! We were happy having chosen a ground-floor condo, as it allowed us to make use of the lawn right in front of same, as the upper ones do offer a covered balcony only. I spent each morning on the sun lounger on the grass working on my tan while my husband enjoyed reading in the shade on the covered patio. Each evening we were looking forward to sipping wine on our patio while watching the sun set with the Bali Hai as a backdrop – words are lacking – a bit of paradise! No. 119 is facing towards West and hence perfect for the sunsets.
Obs: One should be aware of the fact, that the Pali Ke Kua complex is consisting of numerous smaller buildings with each from 4 to 8 condos and not all of them are ocean facing or turning towards West. Make sure you know what you choose!
For two people No. 119 offered lots of space and all the facilities we could wish for. A small entrance area with a table to put your purse, keys etc., a nice and sunny lounge facing the ocean connecting with an open kitchen and a lovely dining area - the latter placed in the very South-Western corner with large windows to the both sides hence offering breathtaking ocean views. Light, airy and sunny! Towards East a fine sized bedroom with a huge kingsize bed and ample dressers sheltered from the parking lot by a small hillside. Adjacent to same a smaller bathroom well equipped with shower and washer/dryer. The open kitchen has all what you need to prepare a full meal including coffee-brewer; toaster, stove, refrigerator etc. etc. and is very spacy and airy. The entire condo is furnished with typical Hawaiian quality cane furniture and includes a full size sofa, two big chairs, small side tables and lots of lamps. Everything is very well maintained and of a fine standard. We felt at home immediately! On the covered patio you find a garden dinner table with four chairs and one sun-lounger. Our only further wish would have been for two lounge chairs, but admittedly, there really isn't room for more furnishing.
The entire complex is situated in a very lovely park-like garden with fine green lawns and manicured flowerbeds - all extremely well maintained. We watched the gardeners working each day. A very narrow piece of lawn separates the ocean-front condos with the steep hillside towards the waters. Apart from a single palm tree or two there are no further vegetation right here hence allowing you a non-obstructed 180 degree view of the ocean and Bali Hai in the distance. This we did especially enjoy very much. It should be noted too though that the lawns are for all the residents of the entire complex and hence coming late afternoon you will note guests from other condos coming down to enjoy the sunset. However, at no time of any inconvenience to us. People were never noisy or bothering you - but gave you a nod or smile while passing by. When wishing to socialize ourselves we would leave our patio and walk out this strip or to the very tip, where people would gather and small talk. Although the buildings are of thin wooden constructions, we were neither ever bothered by our next-door neighbors or people staying on top of our condo, although you couldn't avoid hearing footsteps aloft.
The complex has its very own tropical beach to which a small - rather steep - but well paved path will take you down by zig-zagging through genuine lush rainforest vegetation. Takes you maybe 10 minutes. Benches are available for possible needed breaks for the upwards climb. The beach is rather small and not very wide but does offer a bit of golden sand and good shady areas under the canopies of tropical grape-wine. Corals are covering the entire stretch so you need to tip-toe a bit to enter for a swim - yet you have snorkel options right at hand. It's a lovely very tropical little beach, although the next cove (belonging to Puu Poa is the perfect postcard picture sandy one, but to which access is absolutely strenuous by means of a steep, muddy little trail). An alternative beach option is to walk the few yards to The Princeville Resort and use the little paved path taking you behind these buildings and down to their somewhat larger and more open sandy beach. Here you will likewise find a beach-bar and other facilities. But yet again, if you wish to swim and explore beaches - you just have to take your car and drive some 5 miles in either directions or you'll find lovely beaches of all characters and sizes. If you have children along there is the wide and shallow Hannalei Bay with lots of soft sand, if you are into snorkeling The Tunnel a bit further out is not to be missed and offering tall rainforest clad hills as a backdrop. Our personal favorite is the beautiful and legendary Lumahai Beach some 10 km out. A short and very easy trail leads to this beach that has the perfect tropical ambiance that we were looking for fine golden sand, turquoise waters and a lovely tropical vegetation of grape-wines and palm trees - but best of all - very little crowded. It is safe to swim from this beach during the summer months, but be aware of dangerous currents and high surfs coming winter. By the way, this is the beach used in the original version of the film South Pacific - and it is exactly as beautiful as in same!
Obs: We should like to mention, that a pool is likewise available at the Pali Ke Kua condo complex, only it’s placed in a fenced-in back-lot like garden with no views. Hence, we didn’t make much use of it, as we wouldn’t miss out of the ocean view. It would upgrade the complex tremendously if this pool was moved i.e. to the tip or the tiny strip of lawn in front of the ocean-facing condos…
Princeville/Hanalei was the perfect area for us to stay in Kauai as you are in the lot greener, more lush and less touristic part of the island. While Princeville is on a high plateau with newer houses and elegant low-rise condos spread out as balls on a golf green and with a small modern shopping mall easily at hand - nearby Hanalei is a lovely tiny artist colony featuring genuine Hawaiian architecture, a little town square with colorful boutiques, restaurants and cafés and a low-key lifestyle. In general the entire Northern part of the island is very quiet with hardly any - to no - night life. That is, in Hanalei you can find a few bars staying open till almost midnight while at the exclusive Princeville Resort the elegant bar overlooking the bay closes at 09:00pm. So this area is for those who enjoy a quiet evening with a glass of wine on own terrace/balcony rather than a hectic nightlife. The only downside to staying in Princeville/Hanalei is the long 1-hr. drive you need to add to activities such as cataman excursions or visits to the fabulous Waimea Canyon, that do all commence from the Southern part of the island. We didn't mind - but you have to take it into consideration, if driving isn't much to your liking.
Ps: In closing I should like to add, that the rental was made with ahh aloha Kauai Vacation rentals – and although physically located in Texas, USa; the rental property placed in Kauai and we living in Europe, we experienced a swift, pro and very accommodating handling. Replies and confirmations arrived all within 24 hrs. – and we were even allowed to make a change of property several weeks after the first one being made - without involving any further costs. Documentation and arrival instructions were functional and to detail. Highly recommendable!
As you may gather from the above - we loved the beautiful location and layout of our lovely vacation rental Pali Ke Kua no. 119. We would be more than happy to return given the opportunity! -

West Sedona, ArizonaStunning ocean view from a run down, dirty, hot and loud condo
Left on 10/01/2011 for a stay in September 2011
The view of the ocean was incredible. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the condo. It was run down, cluttered with a lot of old stuff and fake dusty plants. Along with rusty refrigerator door and the broiler setting in the oven did not work. Plus, several vertical blinds were missing that were needed to block out the sun. When we got there the screen door was not looking so you could not leave it open at night to get the much needed cool air.. Many light bulbs were burnt out and only seven hangers for the two of us. Except for two pots and one pan, all others were either too scratched or burnt to use. The cutlery was actually rusty and tray filthy so we ended up washing all the cutlery again and use the least rusted one. While the property management was quick to come a fix the screen door, provide hangers and replace light bulbs and internet cable, they never came with new pots or a mop we requested so we had to mop the floor with a rag by hand.. Unfortunately the screen door fix did not last and since we did not want to be calling and they never came with the other items, we gave up. The other two big issues were being in the lower unit facing west - a bad combination in summer. Basically you could not be in the condo (except in the bedroom with the a/c unit and door closed) from 1 pm to sunset as it was so hot from the sun setting. Being in the lower unit was not great as you could hear the people walking around above and the plumbing. In the lower units you loose privacy as people walk by early in the morning and at sunset. The nice things were the keyless access to the unit, close parking, great mattress, panoramic ocean view stunning, tropical vegetation on the cliffs and around the unit, no mosquitoes, walking on the grass and private beach access. Be aware of the early 10 am check out if you have a 10 pm flight. We left a day early (so we paid for an extra night) so we could spend the day in the condo before flying out.

We have replaced the screen door lock, repaired the oven broiler, purchased new pots and pans, painted the refrigerator, and replaced the blinds slats. Cutlery has been checked by our cleaner and replaced as necessary. Silk plants have been cleaned.
The condo is not run down, nor are the furnishings old. They were purchased new 5 years ago when the unit was professionally decorated. We have done, and will continue to do, everything possible to insure our guests a wonderful stay. -
Somewhat happy
North CarolinaGreat View comfortable but misled on some amenities
Left on 10/03/2009 for a stay in August 2009
The home was very nice and well equipped. It was clean when we arrived. The view is absolutely spectacular and it was private enough though people walk through the back yard area to go to the beach or watch the amazing sunsets.
The kitchen had everything we needed, there were plenty of towels lawn chairs and snorkel equipment. The pillows were lacking and a bit dilapidated so they were prompt in bringing a few extra pillows even though the pillow cases did not fit the pillows correctly. They also told us to remove the shams from the decorative pillows and use those, tacky for a high end high priced unit.
Our biggest complaint was we were lied to about the air conditioning. My wife and I were so very specific about wanting CENTRAL AIR. They told us it absolutely had it and we arrived to find a portable stand up unit in the bedroom. This unit was sufficient for the bedroom but the rest of the house was hot. If we knew this to be the case we would have stayed with the 2 other couples we came with who rented a home on the beach with Air in the bedrooms. We only rented this unit because of the supposed central air. So we had to travel back and forth twice a day to be with our friends and SPEND MORE MONEY on this rental due to the unethical practice of lying about the amenities.
We were offered our money back to move but where were we going to go on short notice. Our friends ended up renting a smaller house so we could not stay with them. I thought a little off the price would have been a proper gesture.

Pali Ke Kua 119 has a bedroom air-conditioning unit, which cools the bedroom very nicely and will also cool the living room if the bedroom door is left open. It's unfortunate the guest misunderstood and was uncomfortable. Air-conditioning is not common on Kauai, and most guests are comfortable without any when staying in an oceanfront location like Pali Ke Kua 119.
With regard to the pillow cases not fitting correctly...while we are able to provide common items like new pillows within hours, there is simply not the shopping selection you find on the mainland, so something like pillow cases in non-standard sizes take a while to have shipped in. Not tacky...just an occupational hazard of living on an island. -

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon. We loved the convenience that
the condo gave us to everything we wanted to do onthe North Shore. The condo itself
was clean and comfortable with beautiful views of the mountains and waterfalls as
well as the ocean! We highly recommend this unit as a comfortable and affordable
place to stay. -

New Haven, CTGorgeous location, beautiful condo
Left on 07/30/2009 for a stay in June 2009
It was my first time renting a condo in Hawaii, but everything went smoothly. Clear driving directions and maps and entry codes were emailed to me ahead of time, and we had no problems finding the spot. My husband and I stayed in a beautiful condo that was decorated even nicer than in the photos we saw ahead of time. It was very spacious, with a well appointed kitchen, washer/dryer, two bathrooms (two bedrooms), etc. We could hear and see the ocean from our bed, and generally enjoyed our 5 day stay there. Overall it was very quiet and relaxing!

Love to travel
Missouri City, TexasThe views were incredible
Left on 07/16/2009 for a stay in April 2009
Each evening we would go out onto our lanai and watch the sunset. The unit was clean and comfortable, but the best part was the location. We traveled with my brother and sister in law. We stayed on three islands and three different condos (all very nice) but at the end of our trip all agreed this was our favorite. I guess it is true when they say location, location, location.

The Dimino's
Carmichael, CaliforniaA Vacation Like No Other
Left on 07/16/2009 for a stay in July 2008
My husband and I wanted to do something special for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. It had been years since we had taken a vacation without the kids. Needless to say, our trip to Kauai was wonderful. From booking the reservation to checking out of our unit, everything went exceptionally smooth. What made our vacation so special was the absolute peacefulness of the unit we rented and the most spectacular ocean view I have ever experienced. We spent many hours just sitting outside our back porch, reading and admiring the vastness of the ocean. It looked as if we could see the other side of the world. Would love to stay there again.
