Getting around

A car is not totally essential as there is a regular bus service to the local town Stornoway 24 miles away. However, if you want to visit beaches ,historical sites, art galleries, take part in activities etc you will need a car. Personally. I think you will enjoy your holiday far more if you have your own transport. Cars can be hired on the island if you choose to fly or you can bring your ca over by ferry. Most visitors choose to travel via the ferry.

Interaction with guest

I do not live on the island but visit most months, As it is a family home I have know the house and island all my life. I have regular contact with guests prior to their holiday and am available during your holiday by email or phone. I have a caretaker, who lives near the house and available to deal with any issues.

Response from the owner I agree the house has a dated feel to it as the older houses in the area were built immediately after WW2 and in our case in 1951. We have tried to retain some of the older features while modernising the kitchen and bathroom and I know this will not be to everyone's taste. Mainly people seem to appreciate the older features and this has always been a family home, well used still by friends and family. We will keep modernising but will be guided by visitors as to how much we do this. I do not want it to be featureless so that it could be anywhere. I am a little mystified about the beds as they are all new, having been replaced last year and I bought good quality mattresses. I appreciate that a bed is a very personal item and everyone has different preferences. I wonder if the "mustiness" was caused by the fact that we turned the house over very quickly that day. I had intended closing the house for a few days but we took the booking at a slightly reduced rate. The previous week friends of mine had visited and the weather was not great so the windows may not have been opened during their stay. This is a very good reminder to us that no matter how short the gap between visitors we must let the Lewis wind blow through the house as would normally be the case. We are quite particular about preparation for our guests.
