Looking for a very special location for your honeymoon, or just for a weekend away with your loved one or just you? This truly stunning apartment provides the kind of sweeping panoramic views over the Hauraki Gulf only billionaires dream of in the rest of the world... and the seclusion and peace and quiet you have been craving for so long. It is a self contained apartment, attached to a comfortable eco house which is mainly run on solar power, wind power and wood. For summer it even has a swimming pool overlooking the water.

House and apartment were finished in 2010 and have extra wide views from the Coromandel to the Whangarei Heads, and are situated in a very remote location only shared with your hosts. You will need a 4WD vehicle for access. Bring your own or ask about vehicle hire.

When you walk into your lounge, an expansive view may make you realise that you are not just looking at a view, but that you have become part of it. Take a seat on the comfy couch and just gaze at the ever-changing views over the water.

Keep an eye out for dolphins, whales (Brydes whales and Orcas), cray fisherman clearing there nets, ocean liners in the far distance or gannets hang gliding past. You may occasionally check that your book is still in your lap and that your drink is still at hand. But you could completely forget about them, too.

Once you are totally relaxed, you could go and explore the island, or go for a swim in the pool that is part of the complex. The Spot X fishing spot is right down below, a 20 minute ramble for the nimble footed down a goat track takes you to the rocks. Your hosts are happy to show you how to get there.

The apartment comes with a master bedroom with en suite, but on request, one or two of the quality queen bedrooms in the main house can be rented as well. These two rooms are connected by a bathroom.

Minimum rental period is 2 days.

Getting around

Some people wonder what we do all day… Or what you are going to do all day when you are here… Don’t worry, you are welcome to sit and watch the view or read your book and totally relax, or just do absolutely nothing all day. For active people there is stacks to do, and for art and craft lovers, too. Often, you have to make your own fun on Great Barrier Island, but there are people who are happy to assist, too. Interaction with guest

Our home is attached to the apartment and as I work from home, I am available a lot of the time, with the best tips for your island exploration. There are also tourist maps available in the apartment and an extensive list of our favourite walks, rides, beaches, etc.

House rules

Kids over under 1 and over 10 only, due to cliff top location.
As the apartment is off grid, guests need to be willing to be frugal with power:
Limit light use, no heating devices such as rice cookers and hair straighteners
Turning off lights when not in a room.
We feel that our being off grid is part of it's charm, but it's not for everyone. If you want to use lots of power and stay up very late into the night, XSPOT (and Great Barrier Island) is not the best spot for you ;-)

Response from the owner I can completely understand your upset. I was very shocked to find I had to cancel your reservation. As I tried to explain to you at the time, one of the booking systems I use had not synchronised and as a result, I had two bookings for the same date, which I only realised when I checked bookings 4 weeks before your arrival. As you can tell by my Tripadvisor score, I like to ensure that people have the best holiday experience, and I am sincerely sorry that I was not able to deliver this for you. I hope you managed to find suitable alternative accommodation and that you had a nice time in New Zealand despite this unfortunate error.

While we can't guarantee seeing as large a variation of wildlife as you did, most people encounter at least a few special species while staying at the here. It comes with being mindful of your surroundings. Fortunately, the offering of specific dietary requirements on island is rapidly improving. Stonewall Store has quite a wide selection, and so does My Fat Puku Cafe in Claris. Please do check with them, next time you're coming for a holiday. ;-) Feeling chuffed you had a blissful time!

How do damage deposits work?
