Guests' quotes: "Beautiful property in fantastic location" "Luxury villa in a beautiful village" "A glimpse of paradise on earth!"

Casa Convento provides an exceptional standard of comfort, style and character which we feel will make your holiday a '5-star' event! It has been designed, built and furnished by me, Suzanne, the owner, using the very best 'ingredients'.

Positioned on the ground and first floors, both the very large en suite bedrooms are of similar luxury and beauty so no need to quarrel over who has the 'master' bedroom! (The king doubles can be split into singles as required) The beds are super-comfortable Danish made and there are blackout lined silk and linen curtains. All towels and beach towels are provided, as well as robes and spa slippers (not always new - we're not a hotel spa!)

The bathrooms have comfortably sized baths and power showers and double basins. (Ground floor bedroom has a separate shower too) Heated towel rails. Hairdryers are provided.

There is also a separate utility and shower room, which includes a washing/drying machine.

The open plan living space on the elevated 2nd floor is stunning, with fantastic views from the dining terrace over the village and hills to the sea beyond. (In winter months the Rif mountains of Morocco can be seen at dusk). There is a built in BBQ and a pyramid gas heater.

The living room also has a double sofa bed for occasional (registered) extra guests. (Surcharge of £30 applies)

There is a log burner for winter evenings which lights easily and heats the whole room in 15 minutes.

The kitchen is fully equipped with lots of gadgets and plenty of utensils and dishes etc. There are also Spanish cook books to tempt your culinary skills.

There is a cargo lift to bring up the shopping, drinks, logs etc. (Strictly 40K limit)

Up the spiral staircase on one side of the living room is the large sun terrace, with comfortable loungers and privacy/shade screening as needed. There's also a hot and cold shower. The views from here are arguably the best in the village!

The breathtakingly beautiful wildness of the National Tejeda park is right behind the house.

Our small, shallow private pool (2.80m x 5.30m) complete with water spout, is solar heated (temperature is dependent on the amount of sunshine) and sits in its own very private 'Moroccan' patio.

Casa Convento has the advantage of being part of the delightful 'pueblo blanco' of Canillas de Aceituno, while maintaining its own intimate atmosphere and privacy.

The National Park is immediately at its back with the panorama over the village and hills to Lake Vinuela and the sea below. The newly created 'aerial' walk 'El Saltillo' includes the third longest pedestrian bridge in Europe (See photos) Otherwise, Casa Convento is a perfect hideaway for reading, swimming, relaxing, or take a 2 minute stroll down to to the village for a 'fino' sherry and tapas or an authentically regional meal at one of its good-value Spanish restaurants, or pack the in-house picnic knapsack and head up one of the hill paths. But the beaches, international shopping, nightlife and golf courses are only 25 minutes away...

CHANGEOVER SATURDAY ONLY DURING HIGH SEASON (But always check with me just in case!) ENQUIRE FOR AVAILABILITY IN LOW AND MID SEASON.

AIR CON AND UNDERFLOOR HEATING CHARGE IS REGISTERED VIA A DEDICATED DIGITAL METER AND CHARGED OUT OF YOUR SECURITY DEPOSIT AT A RATE OF APPROXIMATELY £15 FOR TIMED USE PER INDIVIDUAL ROOM PER WEEK (BATHROOMS COUNT AS ONE AND LIVING ROOM COUNTS AS 2 ROOMS)

FREE WI-FI ACCESS. SORRY - NO KIDS UNDER 10 DUE TO SPIRAL STAIRS TO ROOF TERRACE. THE LAYOUT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR THE INFIRM. THIS IS A STRICTLY N0N-SMOKING PROPERTY.

Getting around

A car is a necessity to get the full benefit of exploring. Granada is less than 2 hours away and Cordoba under 3. You can choose to drive the rural route over the hills or take the motorways from the coast. There are many small villages of great beauty to explore around Canillas de Aceituno.

Interaction with guest

I will suggest car hire for you which gives you a discount. On payment completion about 6 weeks before your holiday,I provide all directions, photo route in the village and can direct you to a smartphone app to use my CCTV which shows whether there is a parking space right by the house or whether you should park in the car park about 150 metres away. I also provide the key safe number which allows you to enter at your convenience (subject to time restrictions for entry on changeover) and contact numbers. There is a lot of house info in the House Book and all instructions for equipment within.

House rules

I CANNOT ACCEPT CHILDREN UNDER 10 YEARS OLD. ALSO NOT SUITABLE FOR INFIRM.
Air conditioning/underfloor heating will be charged via a dedicated meter and cost retained from security deposit. Approx £15 per room per week. This is because if I include it, then guests leave heating/air-con on which is vastly wasteful and expensive.
BBQ and fireplace must be cleaned out or a charge will be made.
On a Saturday departure, all rubbish must be cleaned and removed as there is no collection.

“Perfect getaway for total rest and relaxation”

Reviewed 24 Jul 2019

This was our second stay in this beautiful house, and every bit as enjoyable as the first. Casa Convento occupies an excellent location in the heart of this pretty village and is beautifully appointed throughout. The beds are super comfy, the bathrooms very well appointed, the furnishings tasteful and there is also an extensive range of kitchen equipment to cater for every need. We love the fact that we can watch village life from the dining balcony - which has breathtaking views - and enjoy a chilled glass of wine as the sun goes down. Suzanne, the owner has thought of many little touches that makes it a real home-from-home, and we love it! Highly recommended.

“Spectacular view in a lovely town”

Reviewed 27 Apr 2019

Casa Convento is a great place to stay in the quaint town of Canillas de Acuetina. Suzanne was very responsive to our email queries and the Casa itself was well appointed and located near hiking trails. The rooms were clean, spacious and quite comfortable. We loved being able to walk into the town square and meet the locals while sipping coffee. The only reason we didn't rate it as excellent is that heating was extra, something we hadn't come across before, especially since the weather was, for the most part, cool and rainy. Casa Convento is well recommended.

Response from the owner Thank you for your kind review. Just to address the heating question; we did have a discussion prior to your arrival when I said the weather was dubious and I offered you the option and told you the cost, explaining that electric underfloor heating is very expensive and I cannot give this for free or it would make my rental cost too expensive and not fair when folk do not require the heating or air-con at all The cost is calculated without profit via a dedicated meter. This is far fairer and leaves the responsibility and choice with our guests. Sorry it did not meet with your approval but you had said you didn't want the heating anyway, being hardy Canadians!?

“It fell short...”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2018

Casa Convento is without doubt a very well appointed property with spectacular views. The kitchen has to be the most well equipped that we’ve stayed in to date. However, the pool is not what I would call a swimming pool. Four strokes and you are at the other end. This was disappointing in particular for me as I am a keen swimmer. The pool is for the most part in the shade, so if you are going to sun bathe then you need to sun bathe on the roof terrace and then come down several flights of stairs to shower off your sun cream, have your swim and then go back up several flights to re-apply your sun cream, for the process to start all over again. Air conditioning is charged as additional at the end of your stay. Something I have never come across before in all the nine years of booking through holiday lettings. Whilst the village itself is quaint and unspoiled with an abundance of white washed houses, it was somewhat off putting to have to continually dodge the dog feaces and without fail there would be a very potent smell of urine wafting up on to the terrace every evening. Eating out is a big part of our holiday. We tried all three of the restaurants in the village, none of which were memorable, in fact I was served raw salmon at ‘Restaurante la Sociedad’. If you are after a decent bottle of white wine or indeed a cocktail, then this is not the place for you.

Response from the owner Dear Reviewer, I am so thankful to have received the opening two sentences of your critique and happy that something has met with your approval! However, how sad to hear that all else falls short of your ideal. In more than 10 years of only top reviews, I have not received such discontent. Please allow me to address your points: The Pool. The size is as written and described. Photos on line show the visual. Frankly, it’s a pretty good size for a town house pool. (When I designed the house my builder was astonished that I accommodated such a generous pool in the space!) Due to the wall lines, the shade is dependent on the time of year but usually there is sun on one side of the patio for quite a long period of the day. I find my guests rather enjoy the utter privacy, quiet and shade for some of the hotter periods. No other client has complained about the roof top sun terrace; all seem to adore the spectacular view, hot and cold shower and comfortable loungers with no complaints about the exercise involved from sun to pool! The air conditioning charge is made fully clear in more than one place. I prefer to leave use or not up to the resident. I charge an extraordinarily reasonable rental and then add on a very fair additional charge taken from the dedicated meter reading for air-con; electricity is terrifically expensive in Spain and I’m afraid guests simply leave on the air-con for long periods if not ‘restricted’. I know for a fact that other properties add this charge in the same way. It is indeed a shame about the occasional dog – and cat - poo. The villagers have no parks or easily accessible dog walks and get lazy, I suppose, plus they have not caught on to poo-bags, so to speak. The dedicated street cleaner was lost to financial constraints. I have written to the Town Hall on several occasions to say this is shaming and they now impose a fine….but have no-one to police it. The smell in the evening is not urine, rather, it’s the natural fleece smell of goats who are herded on the surrounding hills and for which Canillas is famous for as oven-roasted kid! Yum. When one knows it is not urine, it becomes more acceptable. I’m sad that you didn’t enjoy the restaurants and bars; to be fair the wine is decent at a very reasonable price but this is not the place to even expect fine wines! They mostly serve the simple food of a ‘pueblo blanco’ and its regional dishes and certainly do not run to ‘gourmet’ or ‘cocktails’; for this I would suggest the more appropriate Marbella/Puerto Banus locality - and cheeky prices.

“Perfect for a wonderful break”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2018

We had a wonderful week long break in this stunning holiday home which is in a beautiful and unspoilt Spanish village. The home has everything and more that you need and the bedrooms are akin to a boutique hotel (yes really). We enjoyed the weather and the spectacular views on the roof terrace. The shower up there is a master stroke - other properties take note! We ate on the balcony looking out to the turquoise lake Vinuela and the beautiful mountain scenery. The property is 3 minutes walk ( at most) to the centre of the village. Three good restaurants and several bars which also served food, a bakers, butchers, two small supermarkets, fruit shop and a fishmongers. The village is an absolute pleasure to wander round particularly early morning when the friendly locals are going about their business. On Saturday and Sunday pick up your fresh churros- you will hear the chatter before you find the place ( right next to the church), just brilliant. Just writing this makes me want to go back... There is also a daily bus to Vélez Malaga if you fancy a visit there. We didn’t use the service as we had hired a car. That said next time I would consider getting a taxi to and from the airport. We didn’t use the car at all after we arrived in Canillas as we had explored the area the week before when based in another hilltop village. I would weigh this option up particularly if you are only visiting for a week. Suffice to say this was a truly fabulous holiday- wonderful accommodation and perfect location. The owner was a pleasure to deal with.

Another visit to Casa Convento - but at a different time of year. It was almost like coming home. We were very lucky with excellent weather for the time of year and were able to visit some of the surrounding white towns and villages in beautiful sunshine. It's an excellent place to stay...the house itself (the accommodation and how well furnished and equipped it is); the views (which are forever changing due to the time of day, the weather, the light); the location (in 'real Spain'). For us it it's got it all. Contact with the owner, Suzanne, is a pleasure too.

“Wonderful views - immaculate townhouse - ideal location”

Reviewed 29 Jun 2017

Casa Convento was the perfect place to stay for our first trip to Spain. The village, though small, has a variety of shops, restaurants, banks and bars for all everyday needs while larger supermarkets can be accessed within a 30 mins drive on the route home from the beach. The house is superbly equipped, very clean and comfortable and the pool was always welcome after a day exploring the fantastic countryside, towns and villages nearby. The views from the property are absolutely stunning throughout the day and you could not ask for a more romantic setting with a glass of Rueda at sunset.
