Vacation Rental Description
This gem is located at the end of a hidden lane, just off Simonton Street, behind The Gardens Hotel. Helen's Hideaway is a step back in time to Key West during its slumbering past. Built by David Wolkowski, who built many of Key West's premier resorts, including the Pier House, this paradise reflects his passion for special details. Just past the outdoor shower, walk behind the large scheffeleras, open the gate and find yourself strolling down a Key West secret lane to Duval Street! You will be one of the few and privileged to be able to do this! Just remodeled in August, 2001, this unique house and large private heated pool is surrounded by mature palms, Spanish lime trees, scheffeleras and other magnificent foliage. Completely gated and fenced, you will experience privacy in Key West that is unrivaled anywhere else on our small island. The fully air-conditioned main house has the kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom and bath. The kitchen has everything you will need if you desire to cook during your stay. The dining room seats up to six comfortably, with an oak pass-thru to the kitchen. All along the living/dining room wall are floor to ceiling sliding glass doors that look out onto the pool and gardens. The large bathroom features a completely tiled step-down shower that is 6' x 6', large mirror and sliding glass doors leading out to the pool. The second bedroom and bath are in a separate cottage with sliding glass doors surrounding two sides overlooking the pool and deck. Service was fine..the home is somewhat dated..the main problems
1 - lighting needed on pathway/driveway to home, rough terrain when navigating at night!
2 - refrigerator too small and either froze everything or not cold enough
3 - I was told it had central AC on 2 seperate occasions it DOES NOT there are AC units in the walls..it does get warm late in day
Being right downtown was great and the place is very functional, the pool was nice and private. |

| Three friends and I rented HH for my 40th b-day and to have some quality girl time. The house is located very convenient to all the shopping and food and we could walk everywhere. Having the pool and lounge chairs were great and came in handy for those lazy morning and late nights. It was also great to have a kitchen so we didn't have to eat out all the time. The house was clean and comfortable and spacious enough for four women to get ready in! A very good value as well compared to some of the other options we researched. |

My husband and I have stayed at Helen's Hideaway twice now (once in 2008 and 2006). The people at Key West Vacation Rentals were wonderful. I couldn't have asked for more genuine, courteous people. The only complaint about Helen's in 2008 was the fact that the king size bed in the main house was very uncomfortable -- it sags in the middle of the bed, its like slepping in a hole. If the owners were to replace the mattress; then this place would get a 5-star rating!

After much searching, we decided to rent Helen's Hideaway for the weekend. It's not glamorous or shiny-new, but it's intimate, private & quiet. It's only a short walk to Duvall street but a world away from the action if you're trying to relax. The pool is the perfect size. Be warned that the detached bedroom has a large window near the ceiling with no curtain. But if you enjoy rising with the sun it is no problem. The shower in the main house is HUGE! The kitchen is small & the pots/pans are limited, but it's a vacation home and we were able to cook & serve everything we brought with some creativity and finagling.
If we are lucky enough to return for a vacation in Key West, we will be renting this property again. |

Helens Hideaway was overall a pretty good experience. The only issues were that it was difficult to regluate the temperature of the rooms. It was either too hot or freezing cold. If anyone plans on sleeping on the sofa bed, I'd make other plans. The proper beds in the two bedrooms were fine but anyone who has to sleep on the fold out will find it very uncomfortable. We ended up taking turns and sleeping on the counch without unfolding it into the bed. It worked out better that way.
My friends and I would definitely rent Helen's Hideaway again. |

My partner, myself, and our two Boxers stayed in Helen's Hideaway during one of our most memorable vacations ever--made possible in large part by the superior accommodations. What a terrific surprise it was opening the door to this vacation rental for the first time--you really can't judge a book by its cover! From the unimpressive alley way, you'd think you were stepping into a hovel, but Helen's Hideaway is a hidden gem of a haven!
It's truly a great space, offering lots of amenities, cool breezes, luxurious but unpretentious touches, and privacy. Loved the pool, the pool house, the bedrooms, the spaciousness, the relaxed atmosphere, the kitchen--and the privacy! (Did I say privacy?) Nice and quiet, off the street, but still close to what's happening on Duvall and beyond. The hotel management folks tended to their jobs virtually invisibly but no one missed a beat.
I've stayed in some great places around the world (including Maui), but Helen's Hideaway is one place that I'd gladly return to, with my constant companions again or with a larger group of family and friends. |

| Cannot recommend Helen's Hideaway enough! We loved it. We were 2 couples so we each had our own cottage and completely enjoyed having our own private pool to relax in. In fact, there were times when we had to force ourselves to go out and check out the town! It was nice to have the pool to come back to at the end of the evening. At one point, we had a problem turning the heat down in the pool and called the management company. They sent someone by very quickly to fix it. Very well run. Absolutely loved Key West and Helen's Hideaway and hope to stay again as soon as we can. |

The main home with detached guest house worked out perfectly as my husband and I stayed in the main house with our granddaughter and our daughter and son-in-law used the guest house giving them privacy. The home was off the beaten path yet centerally located. We parked our car and did not drive until we were ready to leave. It was wonderful to go off for a day of sight seeing and be able to come home to an inviting swimming pool. My husband had never been to Key West so this just made him want to visit more. This was a perfect spot to stay. We had one family in the main house (2adults
1Child) and another couple in the seperate cottage. It worked great we all got
to have our own space but we had the pool in between that we stayed in
almost the whole time. You are close enough to all the excitement yet can just
lay back and relax around the pool without hearing it. Will stay in this exact
spot again. Only complaint was it was a dark walk down the driveway to get to
our entrance at night and that made me feel a little unsafe. If you could instal
a couple of motion lights it would really add a great deal. |

Helen's Hideaway provided exactly what I needed ... a home away from home . There is a hidden gate behind the pool that leads directly to Duval St. The private pool is awesome, so be sure to hit a liquor and grocery store to cut down on eating out in restaurants. We would hit the bars for fun and then spend late night hanging out at the pool enjoying the Key West night sky. This place is a gem and reasonable. |

Four of us came to Helen's Hideaway and had a wonderful stay there. The pool was fab, as was the pool-side grill. It was quiet, with not too many roosters crowing in close proximity. (Note to Mayor: Do something about the roosters, really -- on vacation folks need to rest. Ditto on restricting the number of scooters (or putting mufflers on?) in Key West. I have stayed at places where between the roosters, the scooters, and the frequent overhead planes, for rest I should have stayed home.)
It would be good if Helen's did a two-tiered pricing plan -- where you could rent the house without the cottage. I would like to come back just as a couple, but if you don't have a foursome, it's too pricey to rent the entire place. |

Key West seemed a great place for our family. I was apprehensive about booking a place I had never seen before. What a great vacation rental! There was plenty of room for all of us and our dog. It was very private and clean. Loved our own private swimming pool after a day of walking Duval Street! We were right down in the center of Old Town and everything was in walking distance. You even have your own parking space which is hard to find on Key West! We returned in 2006 and I have recommended it to friends of mine. If we return to Key West in the future we will certainly try to book Helen's Hideway. |

Pros:
Location is Key (pun intended). It's on the "right" side of the island and only one half block from Duval (Duval is accessible through an alley). Its nearly half way up Duval so you can easily access attractions on either end.
The home itself is nicely maintained albeit a bit dated. However, the cost of rental in December easily outweighed any minor aesthetic issues.
The pool is very private because of the configuration of the main house and the guest cottage. Two couples have more than enough private space in this unit.
We traveled with a six week old and my parents and were pleased with the experience. Sarabeth's, only one or two blocks away has great food that can be ordered take-out.
Check-in and out were very easy at a location only three or four blocks away. There is parking for a vehicle only steps from the entrance. The service was good and an issue with the heat pump for the pool was taken care of within a day.
Cons:
Having to pay. |
