Vacation Rental Description
Situated a short distance from Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Craigwell Cottage is an ideal base from which to explore Edinburgh and to tour central Scotland. We provide a parking space in our private courtyard so that you can leave your car and set off on foot. We even have a shared secret garden with lovely views to the Palace and over to Holyrood Park.
The cottage is part of a former brewery built in 1822 which was sympathetically converted in 1987 to form flats, townhouses and one semi-detached cottage which was the former gatehouse of the brewery.
The cottage overlooks the central courtyard of the complex to one side, and over gardens with views towards the Scottish Parliament buildings and over to Salisbury Crags.
Entering from the courtyard, there are two bedrooms (one double, one twin) on the ground floor along with the bathroom with over-bath shower. Upstairs is the open plan living, dining and kitchen area which is well equipped with all you'll need to self-cater - although with so many choices of restaurants and cafes in close proximity you don't need to do much cooking!
Staying in self-catering rental accommodation offers a freedom to come and go as you please, get up late - or early and suit yourself on whether you cook or eat out.
The owners of Craigwell Cottage have lived in Edinburgh for many years and are happy to recommend things to do and places to visit, and are on hand to offer advice and assistance before, during and after your stay.
By providing quality accommodation our aim is that you will want to return to explore Edinburgh and stay at our lovely cottage over and over again.

| Three of us met for a long weekend in Craigwell cottage. It met all our needs for comfort, cleanliness, location etc. I would heartily recommend it for up to 4 people and would certainly use it again on another such visit. |

| We loved the cottage and how it was within easy walking distance from the busy attractions of Edinburgh, including the castle, as well as the quietness of countryside. It was ideal for the four of us and furnished with everything we might need. We will certainly be in touch when we re-visit Edinburgh. |

| Our family of four stayed there for a week in early August. The apartment was very clean, and spacious enough for myself, wife, and two small kids. It was in walking distance of the major Edinburgh sites. It was also in walking distance of shopping, including grocery stores. |

| Terrific cottage right in the heart of Edinburgh - 1 block off the Royal Mile and about 300 yds from Hollyrood Palace. The cottage is quaint, spotlessly clean with all the modern comforts of home. Edinburgh is a great city for walking - the cottage location was close to everything. We rented a car which was great for day trips out to the country and coast (and golf); having a private parking spot was a bonus. We spent a week and would definitely come back. |

| When we first saw Craigwell Cottage on a cold wintry day in early 2007, we could see the positives - we would be able to offer a parking space for our guests and a unique little cottage which was just perfect for a holiday location, being so close to the Royal Mile. Great Well-Appointed Cottage in a Central Location |

We stayed here in July this year, to be close to The Gathering in Holyrood Park. The owners, Susan and Sandy, were extremely helpful in arranging access and helping us to look for Edinburgh services before our arrival (we were also getting married). Susan searched all over town for things for us, for which we were extremely grateful.
The cottage is on two levels, with living/dining/kitchen upstairs, and two bedrooms and bathroom downstairs. The upstairs is very well set up, with wireless internet in addition to all the usual requirements of dishwasher, washer/dryer, good stove and small refrigerator. The downstairs bedrooms are fairly small, with only just enough room to squeeze around a queen-size bed in one room. The other room had two single beds, giving it much more space. The bathroom was modern, but sparsely fitted out. The lack of storage in the bathroom caused us some problems while we had four people staying, but it was OK for two.
The cottage is at the entrance to an old brewery, and has one car parking space,a major benefit in this crowded city. It also had access to a common garden high on the hill above, through some steep stairs past the other apartments in the complex. The garden has views over the Edinburgh skyline, and access up to the road above, but was a bit overgrown and not pleasant to use while we were there. The wet, overcast summer weather may have contributed to this.
The cottage location at the bottom of Calton Road was ideal for accessing all of the major Edinburgh attractions. The Royal Mile was only a minute's walk away to a cafe (Clarinda's), although it was uphill to most other things. Buses, trains and shopping were easy walks.
As the cottage backs on to a busy road, we found car noise on the cobblestones outside to be the one thing we really disliked. Better sealing to the doors would improve this. More hooks and rails for wet gear were also needed.
We liked the location, friendly service and fitout, and will return here. |

It was fun to be able to help out our guests who were coming to celebrate not only the Homecoming Scotland event in 2009, but also to travel to their family's original heartland to celebrate their wedding.
Edinburgh was very busy during the Homecoming Weekend, and being located so close to the action in Holyrood Park was a big plus, particularly when there were so many road closures so our guests were able to walk to most things.
The bedrooms in the cottage are small, as stated, but there is a double wardrobe for storage in each of them, and we've added sliding mirror doors to the wardrobe to reflect light, and provide adequate storage as well as secondary glazing to the windows to cut down on street noise.
The cobblestones near the cottage and in the courtyard are a feature of the historic location and were designed before the advent of the modern motor car!
We are always pleased to receive helpful suggestions from guests when they find something which can be improved, and carefully weigh up comments made over the year to make improvements for our future visitors. |

We enjoyed so much our stay at Craigwell Cottage. The
accommodations were exactly as described and even exceeded our
expectations. Susan, the owner, was more than helpful. The Wi-Fi
was a great service to communicate with our family back in the States
during our stay. The cottage location was so ideal, especially for the
Edinburgh Marathon (2 minutes from the start) which brought us to
town. But for ANY exploring of Edinburgh, this place is a must stay as
it is straddled right between the Royal Mile and Regent Road (which
becomes Princes Street), being one block from each. The on site
parking was so helpful as well because we had rented a car. We are
guaranteed to come back again and again. |

With so many events happening in Holyrood Park over the course of the year, having a cottage in a location which is only a few minutues walk away is a real bonus for any short stay in Edinburgh.
For those who want a great base for a touring holiday of Scotland, the close proximity to Waverley Station or the bus tours which depart from the city centre mean it's not always necessary to have a car - but if you do we offer a free parking place! What more could you need? |
