Vacation Rental Description

Owner Patrice moved from Vienna, Austria to NC in 1997. She had the early 60's cottage completely renovated in 2002, adding, among other things, new heating and AC in addition to the gas fireplace, a marble bath with sunken tub, knocked out the gloomy low ceilings in three rooms in exchange for cathedral, added six skylights, state of the art lighting with dimmers everywhere, chandeliers, a Venetian-plaster dining room in deep amethyst done by NY and FL artist Stephanie Bussell, a charming old world kitchen renovated with cracked tile and murano glass by (then) local artist Jessica Host (now FL) and a four-leveled 1000 sq. ft. deck with rectangles and three octagons--two around old maple trees; one surrounds a special order, round, sunken hot tub from The Hot Tub Store in Waynesville, NC. Patrice had met artists Host and Bussell because they had seen pictures of her deck design in the newspaper and wished to be part of this artistic renovation project. Both turn of the century and contemporary artworks adorn the walls of each room. Patrice is an international art curator who directed exhibitions at the UN in Vienna, Austria and owns a fabulous private collection. Over the mahogany sleigh bed in the master suite hangs a huge 1911 landscape by American artist Richard Turner. On opposite walls hang two paintings by Hans Wilderman, born 1886 in Cologne Germany, famous for the 1937set design of Salzburg's Magic Flute (his works are in Salzburg's Mozart Museum, Cologne's Theaterwissenschaft Museum and London's Victoria and Albert Museum) directed by Arturo Toscanini. The kitchen boasts the largest collection of former Yugoslavian naA_ve paintings in the US from the 70's. One is a winter scene of children by the '79 UNICEF stamp winner, Suzanna Chalopova who, then in her eighties, painted children she was never able to have herself. The "piano room" contains a 6 foot grand piano, state-of-the-art stereo system, and a full sofa bed. An art deco mirror from Vienna, Austria, by Viennese artist Werner Goll is a recent addition to the cottage's art work, with pure gold applications surrounding an Art Nouveau design acid-etched with 200 applications. Mr. Goll is famous for his Art Deco coffee houses in Vienna. The name "European Art Cottage" seemed fitting. As in the case of many European "abodes," the cottage is unpretentious and almost diminutive on the outside but gracious and surprisingly rich in style on the inside. One of the submitted movies for the Asheville Film Festival (spokeswoman Andie MacDowell lives in Asheville and supports this festival) used the cottage as backdrop for several movie scenes. In a quiet neighborhood, two blocks from Lake Tomahawk, one block from the golf course, minutes from downtown Cherry Street, the cottage is ideally situated. There are wooded views from the deck, and the property is on almost half an acre. Black Mountain is only 10 miles east of Asheville-- in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just 15 minutes from Vanderbildt's famous Biltmore Estate; a short 30 minutes from the now famous Cold Mountain, 25 minutes from Chimney Rock Park, 10 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, and 45 minutes from skiing, as well as Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains. In short, a perfect place to make your home while exploring the wonders of Western North Carolina, although some guests prefer just relaxing European Cottage's Tiffany lamp-lit premises; the cottage boasts two marriage proposals to date. Feel like working out or playing Tennis? Enjoy access to Black Mountain's beautiful, brand new Cheshire Health and Fitness Center with a ($12/day/guest) Guest Pass. The Racquet Club is also available to visitors for additional costs. For more information, click here! What a unique experience! We enjoyed our stay in this beautifully furnished home - it is unlike any other rental property we've stayed in. It is located in a quaint subdivisio with a lake, golf course, swiming pool, and tennis courts. We met the owner on our arrival, she was very interesting and welcoming.

I would reccommend this property to anyone.

We found the European Cottage a very nice place to stay. Patrice was a most generous hostess. Much better than staying in a hotel. The Hot tub capped the experience.
It was any easy drive to Asheville, but we enjoyed Black Mountain as well.
Next time we'll try the golf course which is just a stone's throw from the cottage.
