stay at Flip-Flop Cottage |

We enjoyed our stay, thought the cottage was spacious and the beds comfortable.
The oven seems to be very old and the heat on the bottom oven did not regulate and we had difficulty cooking some pizza in it. In fact we set off the smoke alarm due to the uneven (too high) temperature. The top oven's light showing that it was on did not work (or maybe it's so old it did not have that feature) and so the last night we were there we left the oven on all night. I am very aware of fire hazards and feel that this oven is a fire hazard!
We enjoyed the outdoor shower and walking to the beach, but if had a choice again would have chosen a cottage on a quieter street. The traffic on Jones ave was quite fast and heavy. I think we would have enjoyed a cottage on the bike trail road that we often walked our dogs on.
Also because the cottage had a sign with Mermaid Cottages and a phone number in front of it, we had someone (thinking it was a office to stop and make rental arrangements) knock on our door and "inquire within". I don't think that sign should be there! |

| We stayed at Flip Flop cottage and enjoyed ourselves very much. It was only a short walk to the beach and grocery stores and other stores and restaurants were close by. The cottage worked well for us as we had 5 adults. The only thing we had a problem with was the floors were very dirty. We mopped them our first night there. We also would recommend having some throw rugs as you come in the door to try to keep some of the sand off of the floors. It was nice having Savannah so close to visit. The area was beautiful. We would consider coming to Tybee Island again but either in the spring or fall when it's cooler. |

We found Flip-Flop Cottage to be perfect for our needs (2 adult couples, 2
young children) in terms of its spaciousness, facility, and amenities. The
decor is bright and pleasant, and it's location especially is great -- 3 blocks
from the 2nd street beach, 2 blocks from the park and library, a 1-mile
drive (or walk) from 16th street and the pier. The kitchen and amenities
were accommodating (wifi in particular a wonderful amenity); and there is
even a population of toads that populates the back yard.
Yet the presence of so many toads (my son and I caught 5 in one evening)
indicates the one problem that we encountered at Flip-Flop, namely, the
large number of bugs. Pests exterior to the house, in particular mosquitos,
should be expected, I guess, given Flip-Flop's low-water location and lush
vegetation in the backyard. The sheer number of bugs outside deterred us
from using the outside shower, located in the back of the backyard
attached to a rubbishy shed, away from the main house More off-putting,
however, was the number of cockroaches that we encountered inside the
cottage: in the kitchen; in the dining area; in the living room area; in the
bathrooms (none in the bedrooms that we saw). After our first evening
there, we reported this, and an exterminator was dispatched that very day.
However, either the roaches were extraordinarily resilient, or the
exterminator did lackluster work. Encountering more roaches discouraged
us from calling again because we figured what was the point. As we used
the kitchen for multiple meals each day, we became, more or less, inured to
their presence.
This is not a good thing while on vacation.
To sum up: stay at Flip-Flop Cottage but make sure that Mermaid Cottages
thoroughly fumigates/exterminates in advance. And that the pesticides are
working. |

| My family and I thoroughly enjoyed Flip Flop Cottage! Last year, we had stayed at the Key Lime Parrot which I absolutely adored and I was worried that the Flip Flop would not measure up. However, I was wonderfully surprised! I loved the screened porch which is the perfect place to read a book. The decor was cheerful and everything you might need was there. I was a little concerned when I saw the ovens as they looked very old, but they worked like a charm and we had no problems! After our first trip to Tybee last year, we liked it so much that it has now become an annual vacation for us. And, we will continue to use Mermaid Cottages as the cottages are wonderful and the customer service is great! |

The cottage was so cute and the bedrooms were spaced out nicely so if you wanted privacy you could enjoy that. The kitchen was well stocked w/all the cooking utensils (loved the dishes)Dining room was very nice for the 8 of us. Plenty of room. Couldn't find the light switch for the outside shower, unless the bulb was burned out. The outside shower was great! With 4 kids it was a big plus. It was pretty hot for us Michiaganders down there so the A/C was really wonderful.
We all found the local drivers to be quite unforgiving when it came to giving pedestrians the right of way. That bothered me, espeically trying to cross over to the beach. We rented bikes for the week and it was fun riding in the early AM when the rest of the gang were still sleeping. Cooler too. I found a nice coffee shop and visited that on my morning ride. The beach was nice in the AM also for shell hunting. The kids had a great time playing in the waves.
I am an avid gardener @ home and thought the landscaping could have been more appealing @ the cottage and the back yard needed to be raked..espeically by the shower. All in all I would sure give the cottage and the management a 99%. |

Myself, 4 kids and 2 dogs greatly enjoyed our stay in the adorable, quirky Flip Flop cottage during our recent vacation on Tybee. This is our second year to rent from Mermaid and all the wonderful folks there and we couldn't be happier again this year. The only sad thing was having to leave.
The fenced back yard is a godsend for our dogs, Yeager (GSD) and Bounce(WFT). They enjoyed their stay so much better with the chance to run around outside. We also appreciated the grill as we had friends from Georgia for a day and being able to BBQ steaks on it was great!
Everything was in tip top shape, not a thing to complain about and while we stayed in a nice but different Mermaid house last year, we will be requesting Flip Flop for our next vacation trip. Close enough to both the North and East beaches for walking, but we rented bikes from Tim's Beach Gear (who is also WONDERFUL to deal with) and the cottage is right next to the bike trails.
Only dissapointment was when the kids read the visitor books and called "not fair" that Dianne is not bringing Lemon Squares around anymore, LOL.
Talked my brothers family into renting from Mermaid this year, after our wonderful experience with them last year, and they agree that is it just SOOOOOO much better than a hotel room. They loved their house and being able to let the kids come and go from our "homes" to play around on Tybee together makes the vacation that much more special.
Mermaid Cottages, Tybee and Georgia Folks in general is what keeps us coming back to Tybee for our vacation each year. Thank you all! (We miss Tybee already) |

This was our first time staying in Tybee Island so we had no idea about choosing the location of our rental. We were very pleased with where this was located. It was in walking distance to the beach, shopping and the YMCA with it's big playground. We came with our three kids so that was a huge plus!
That being said, we were a bit disappointed with the cleaniness of the house. Within 5 minutes of our baby crawling around, she was covered in dirt. It's possible that the cleaning crew just didn't come (bathtub was dirty, coffee pot hadn't been cleaned out) but I got the impression that the house has always been this way.
Once we cleaned the house, we were pretty comfortable there. They had everything we needed in the kitchen for some serious cooking, a great side porch for our morning coffee and we all slept nice and cozy in the beds. Not to mention, we got to bring our dog Sam and that meant so much to us! |

Should maybe think of having someone exterminate. I was afraid of taking one home in my bags, as were the other guests. Other than these two issues I think the house was GREAT! This cottage was the perfect size for my family and I to stay in while vacationing. It was very comfortable and cozy, so much so that my 4 year old grandson didn't want to go home when it was departure day.
We particularly enjoyed the fact that we could sit out on the enclosed porch or in the back yard and listen to the water hit the shores of Tybee Beach, or just walk to the beach and be there in no time at all.
Tons of shopping and restaurants nearby made it easy for everyone to investigate the area. The majority of the family intend to rent a cottage again for vacation! We loved it! |

Flip Flop is a cute little place with plenty of places to sleep. It is an
easy walk to the beach, Chu's connivence store, the XYZ liquor
store, and a few great places to eat. It is located in a much less crowded part of the island which is nice in the summer. Tybee
Island is one of the most laid back beaches I've been too, even
when it is crowed (and i use the term loosely).
We have two good sized dogs and were comfortable in the house
with them. The cottage also has a decent sized fully fenced in back
yard! The front yard is fenced but a smaller/more explorative creature could find its his way out. The beach is a quick walk as i
said but additionally, the marsh areas are nice and very walkable
also. Tybee is a great beach but it is not dog friendly. Being able to
walk them around on non-busy roads and letting them explore the
marsh is wonderful. There is a Tybee dog park too!
I would defiantly recommend this for anyone looking for a low-key
RELAXING vacation spot. Flip Flop is great for families and couples
alike. Its not the lap of luxury but its cute, clean, and wonderfully
tybee!
PS...The rental people are very nice and easy to work with! That
always helps in my opinion.

Flip flop cottage was at first look exactly what we expected. The place was clean and supplying us with some charcoal and lighter fluid was a nice treat (though a book of matches or a lighter would have helped). It was very convenient for the beach and almost everything promised was fulfilled. What ruined our stay in this property was that we found roaches living in the kitchen. In an older home I might expect this, but since we paid a $100 cleaning I do not believe this is appropriate. The property was used only a few days before we arrived so it is
not that it was vacant and un-noticed. Other minor issues were a surprise encounter with a rat in the shed (we had no reason to enter the shed but we were searching for matches) and the fact that two of the three bedrooms were separated by windows leaving little privacy between them. Overall, I do not believe I would return to this property, but I would not necessarily tell someone to avoid it. |

Great fenced in yard for the dogs..Jetta and Phoebe had a ball! I usually pack Everthing for road trips, but here I barely had to unpack anything! Kitchen well-equipped, had CD player for my music, clothesline for wet suits and towels, hooked up hose for cooling off and playing with the dogs , outdoor shower so as not to drag beach into house with you... even charcoal, ready to grill those steaks!!!
But most importantly was the courtesy, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff--from my very first contact with Diane to every single person I talked to from the organization--outstanding!!!

It was very easy to get to Savannah and the surrounding area. Each night we cooked or grilled our dinner and went walking on the beach. Seeing the sunset over the ocean was very moving.
We enjoyed having the room to spread out. Some of the girls even enjoyed using the outdoor shower.
My only concern was the condition of the beach equipment and the bikes. We did not use them but if someone was planning on it they will be diappointed.

My parents, sister, and I along with my husband and our dog stayed at Flip Flop Cottage May 1- 5 2008. None of us had been to Tybee Island before so we didn't know exactly where to stay. Traveling with a dog makes it complicated and my sister is disabled and finds steps hard to handle. What a great house we ended up with. It is mostly one floor. There is a step down that goes to the washer/dryer and one of the bedrooms. The house if bright and cheery. My dog loved playing in the yard, which is fenced. There is a charcoal grill and a picnic table inthe back yard but we didn't use them.
We walked around the neighborhood alot. We walked to the beach, to the Snack Shack, and around the block looking at the houses.
The floor is tile so the dog slid around a little , nothing major.
The things I would change...there are no curtains in the room off the kitchen, where the daybed is..so we felt a little exposed at night and no one wanted to sleep there. There were 3 other rooms, and 6 other beds to sleep in so no one was left without. Also
the living room furniture was comfy but everyone wanted the rocker. So maybe get another one. I enjoyed being able to sit at the dining table and watch tv while we played cards. Overall a great house. |

I would definitely rent this home again. It was large, well decorated, and well appointed with virtually everything one could possibly need - truly, all you need to bring is clothes and food. I loved the outside shower, and everything in the house worked. My only complaint- actually it's a caution, the front gate isn't low enough to the ground to keep little critters in or out. So, if you bring a small dog keep it in the backyard which is fenced. Also, if you arrive late at night, bring a flashlight- we had to borrow one to get into the lock-box. But the neighbors were friendly and gracious so it wasn't a problem.
Rent this home and enjoy! |
