| The service given by Mermaid Cottages is excellent! They're quick to answer questions, and I always felt I was dealing with a real person. Maddie's on Jones is arguably the cutest cottage on the island. It's in a great location - easy to bike to either the lighthouse or downtown. There's a pizza place, a great Thai restaurant and a burger grill & ice cream shop within a couple of blocks. The beach was also a couple of blocks away - easy walk. Beds were comfy. The sun room with the day beds was a nice place to relax and read. Drawback: Although the lot is large with wonderful trees, there's no outdoor seating or dining area. |

| The cottage was only a few blocks from the beach and all the restaurants in the area. However, it was very quiet with little traffic. We loved the pizza and the icecream shops with their fabulous food, and they also were within a couple blocks. For most the trip, we relaxed on the beach and enjoyed the pleasant water. We also made a trip to Fort Pulaski and some of the surrounding sites. This was our first time going on a "family" vacation other than visiting our extended families. We will definitely be back. |

| We had a great time at Maddie's on Jones. The cottage is adorable and was clean and comfortable. My two young daughters took over the large sunroom with the twin beds and loved having their own space. We also liked the location as it was a quick walk to the playground, beach and an awesome restaurant, The Sundae Cafe. Mermaid Cottages provides a top-notch product and is great to work with. Thanks for our relaxing get-away! |

Whirling and Twirling on the Beach at the Mermaid Cottage |

We Whirl and Twirl Upon the Beach at the Mermaid Cottage with Aristophanes, a Talking Cheese Grater, Litigious Dogs and Dancing Crabs
August 17th, 2008
by James Simpson
ATLANTA, GA-
August.
The south end of summer.
The time of year when I’m slogging through the drudgery of everyday life: the commuting, the second-only-to-L.A. traffic of Atlanta, the smog, the latest Mexican drug-trafficking hub that is Gwinnett County, the belligerent goobs in their giant SUVs with the faded “We’re Proud of You†and “Support Our Troops†magnetic ribbons, the tragic irony of which is no longer worth criticizing or satirizing.
I’ve always preferred the muted light of an overcast day; everything looks calm and friendly in the filtered light, which is strange since I lived in Florida for the first 28 years of my life. You’d think I’d be accustomed to sunshine. But in Florida we had afternoon thunderstorms that skuttled in from the gulf every day like clockwork. I adored those gray cumulonimbi.
Here in the city, the harsh, retina-burning full sun of a summer day makes me ill. I get fidgety in the landlocked hell of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area, UV rays bouncing off the endless ribbons of asphalt.
So maybe it’s asphalt I’m allergic to; we certainly have a surplus in this City Too Busy To . . . aww who cares. It’s too hot. The only place where I can stomach full sun is on a breezy hillside at a music festival. Or at the Botanical Garden where the lovely Susannah and I caught Lucinda Williams and her awesome band. But that was at night. And there was a small breeze.
Then there’s the beach.
When it all seems too much, I head for the ocean.
Four hours away we have Savannah and Tybee Island and the pet-friendly Mermaid Cottage that accommodates our Best-Dog-in-the-Universe, Zoe. (She’ll make an appearance here later in the month.)
My reading habits have always favored the odd or inappropriate, and my beach reading choices are no different. I don’t know why, but for this beach trip I chose a volume of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes, a veritable Greatest Hits of the Greeks. I remembered Sophocles and Aeschylus from college and as far back as Miss Stratman’s seventh grade English class. She looked like a female Albert Schweitzer, but with a smaller mustache. A highly literate Bea Arthur.
I’d never read Aristophanes, but the titles were intriguing: The Wasps, Clouds, Peace, The Frogs.
Doors songs came to mind: “The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)†and “Peace Frogâ€.
I was intrigued.
The Wasps was hilarious and bawdy. I imagine Aristophanes as the Greek equivalent of George Carlin and Benny Hill rolled into one. The very British translation probably influenced the latter — the Spartans speak with a thick Scottish brogue.
The main characters are a father and son, Procleon and Anticleon, and the former is obsessed with serving on juries. The son tries to keep him at home, setting up a mock jury trial with one dog suing another for wrongful cheese eating. A cheese grater is called to the stand, as are various bowls and eating utensils.
The legend is that Aristophanes and a demagogue politician named Cleon had a few run-ins: Aristohpanes publicly disagreed with Cleon’s foreign policy, so Cleon sued him for falsely claiming Athenian citizenship (or some such nonsense), but Aristophanes was ultimately acquitted.
This is all speculation, of course. No one knows for sure. Maybe Aristophanes just enjoyed mocking politicians and philosophers in general. In another play, Clouds, he has Socrates descend from the sky in the gondola of a balloon, and refers to him as “My sweet little Socrakins.â€
I now add Aristophanes to the list of dead people I’d like to meet, just behind John Lennon and Margaret Wise Brown.
Anticleon offers to buy his father new clothes and take him to a “drinking partyâ€, but Procleon ends up shitfaced and offends EVERYone at the party, kidnapping a servant girl. She escapes unharmed, if a bit fondled (the Benny Hill side of Aristophanes).
Oddly enough the play ends with a bunch of crabs (Sons of Carcinus) doing the Dance of the Crabs while Procleon performs a burlesque solo and the chorus sings. It is entirely appropriate.
“Oh whirl and twirl upon the beach, rotate with supple ease; then stand upright and try to reach your stomach with your knees. Till crawling from the barren deep the proud Crustacean comes to watch his offspring frisk and leap and spin like teetotums.â€
We watched our kids — our offspring — frisk and leap and spin. I read the play in one sitting on the beach while the lovely Susannah read Gonzo: The Life of Hunter S. Thompson — talking crabs of a different nature altogether.
Thanks to my wife and kids, the ocean, and a long-dead Greek poet, I am a man renewed.
Oh, and the crab legs at The Crab Shack were delicious. And Zoe chased lizards and slept on the couch. |

Had a great experience working with Diane of Mermaid. Learned on a Thursday night that our son was getting married at dawn on Saturday morning at Tybee Island. After searching the Internet Thursday night and into Friday afternoon we got in touch with Diane after seeing a listing that fit our budget, was pet friendly and had Internet access. We were extremely fortunate to get something that met our criteria literally on the spur of the moment.
Diane had two available properties that had what we wanted, and we chose Maddie's on Jones. She told us to call her when we were within a hour or so of Savannah. When we called-- we were racing to make a dinner engagement with our son, his fiance and her family--Diane gave us great directions for a shortcut thru Savannah out to Tybee. We made dinner with minutes to spare.
Diane also gave us a great recommendation for a place to eat Saturday night.
As for Maddie's on Jones, it lived up to its description in all respects. It is an older cottage about 100 yards off the "main drag" on Tybee. It is very well kept and quite comfortable. Everything worked as it should. No "surprises" or issues at all.
We highly recommend working with Diane at Mermaid and this particular property! |

| Maddie's on Jones provided a relaxing venue for our July trip. Very doable walk to the beach and a few restaurants. As others have said the biggest complaint is no DVD player in the main room. It was clean and looked just like the pictures online displayed. I would definitely stay at a Mermaid Cottage again. |

| The house was adorable and spacious, the property much larger than we had expected! The yard was great for our dog, and we all enjoyed it very much, the kids playing ball and exploring, and the grown-ups reading and relaxing. The outdoor shower was fantastic! The kitchen and bathroom were very small but clean and functional. The bedrooms were also very roomy. Since we have stayed in other Mermaid Cottages before, we were expecting a little more decoration and charm than we found in this cottage. A tablecloth on the dining table would have gone a long way, and at least one additional roll of toilet paper for week-long guests would have been very much appreciated. In all, we got everything we needed and wanted there: an awesome vacation. We will definitely rent with Mermaid Cottages again, and would stay in this property again. |

cottage architecture, and were excited to see cottages from Tybee in
the Cottages and Bungalows magazine. We thought Maddies on Jones
fit right in.

| This was a great time for me and my son. He got back from Iraq and wanted to have a nice relaxing time. Mermaid Cottages is definitely the place for that. Nice, clean, and spacious. I wish it had been a little closer to the beach. Definitely NO compliants. Would highly recommend. We stayed at another Mermaid Cottage before he was deployed it was equally as nice and a little closer to the beach and more spacious. For the best time of your life go to Tybee and stay at a Mermaid Cottage. |

This house is very spacious and open, and gave each member of our family enough privacy to make our times together more enjoyable. Unlike some other homes we have rented, each of the sleeping areas provided ample space and storage for clothing. The kitchen had everything we needed.
If you're going with more than 2 people, you might want to take some extra towels, or plan to do frequent washing (which is what we did). Also, it would be nice if the DVD player were attached to the larger TV in the living room, instead of the smaller TV in one of the sleeping areas. Still, there was sufficient seating in that room to allow us all to comfortably watch TV together, if we wanted to.
This house isn't really that close to the beach. If you're a "beach person" in the summer (in other words, if you want to make several trips to the beach each day), this probably isn't the best house for you. But, for the non-summer months, or even in the summer, if one trip to the beach each day is enough for you, the location is extremely convenient. It's also very convenient to the main highway over to Savannah for sight-seeing. |
