| We were very pleased with our stay at Iron Horse. The location was fantastic to the local amenities & eateries. The pool & hot tib were very clean and great tempertures. Interior was well done and clean as well. We would consider coming back during ski season as well as another summer stop for the family! Thanks! |

| This unit was very pleasant, nicely furnished and well-equipped. It is located at the end of the hallway next to the staircase that leads one floor up to the walkway to the ski trail, so it is very convenient for skiing in and out. On the other hand, it was quite a distance from the lobby and pool. Sleeping in the extremely comfortable murphy bed in the living room was delightful and quiet, while the bedroom sleepers experienced a bit more noise overnight with the occasional passage of groomers and snow mobiles. The room gets the afternoon sun but is not overly bright. It could use some brigher lights for evening reading. All in all, we were well satisfied with our stay in this lovely unit. |

Good place to stay |

The Iron Horse is a very good place to stay
during ski season, and the unit was very
satisfactory for 2 single people, with 2 sleeping areas. Would be tight for 3 singles.
Excellent ski-in & ski-out location.
Good hot tubs.
On site restaurant ( Tabernash Tavern) was
very good and reasonably priced -we gave it 2 thumbs up.
Overall, the experience was very positive. |

| Enjoyed the ease of ski-in, ski-out. Condo was a nice unit. Only issue we had was that the main bed was a little uncomfortable. |

Profoundly Disappointing |

Let me start from the end, i.e., check-out time. When I began to express our displeasure to the front desk clerk, she advised ME to call back to track down the manager (rather than having HIM track me down).
As for the particular condo unit, as with many at the IH, it needs to be updated (at a minimum, buy a new bedspread!). As for the IH in general, it has needed an update for some time and, while WE WERE THERE, that needed update was getting into full swing. Funny, when I was booking my trip on the phone (and when I looked at the IH website), NO mention was made of the fact that it would be a run-down construction zone during our stay (carpet all torn up, overflowing trash cans from construction workers, noise, etc., etc.).
Please bear in mind that we have stayed at the IH for many years (my father-in-law owned premium unit 4109 for many years). For quite a while, the IH was THE premium place to stay in WP. Those days are LONG GONE. These days, the Zephyr and Fraser Crossing have taken over as the ski-in/out lodging choice (they're not much to write home about either and are quite cheaply made, but at least they're newer). We opted to stay at the IH this past August partly because of its pool; we used it very little (mainly because there were guys working on the roof above most of the time). Yet we also opted to stay there for sentimental reasons: my wife and I have many fond family memories there, not least of which being our wedding in 05' (held at Sunspot, but everyone stayed at the IH, and we had our brunch at the IH the morning after).
I took the IL bar exam in July and, as do many new lawyers, I wanted to take a nice "bar trip." I cannot express how exceedingly disappointed we were with the IH in particular and, it truly pains me to say, WP in general. Again, we love WP (I lived there for 5 years), but between the dead forest (which I realize isn't anyone's fault) and the sprawling development (most of which is junk - and still only a couple of merely adequate places to eat - Fonentot's and Hernando's), we are seriously considering looking elsewhere for our home away from home in the mountains.
Again, that is a very difficult statment for me to make. But from the valley planning folks and the development visionaries in WP, to the board of directors and management at the IH, so very, very much has been either neglected or actively bungled. |

I love that you expressed your concerns on all the changes that are happening in our valley and to the Iron Horse Resort. As a local for 13 years, I have experienced many of these changes first hand. Some of them good and some of them bad, but all of them were pretty much expected (maybe not the trees though). I wish there was a way to stop the trees from dying, besides having 2 weeks of negative temperatures to kill off the beetles. The growth in this valley is amazing. The base area is no longer a "private" mountain like we have all grown to be quite proud of; in fact, it is becoming more like a ski-town, i.e. Vail, Aspen and Breckenridge. I believe the theory is to make more money and attract more visitors, which means more jobs and more opportunity for the locals. I've heard many times from the long time visitors to this valley that they miss the old days, but I guess that's a sign of the times.
Iron Horse Resort is going through its own much needed updates: new carpet, new paint, new walkways, new individual condo renovations, even a new restaurant. I hope that all the updates are seen as an improvement, rather than a let down to our returning customers. We try to publicize on the website about all the construction and inform our guests that are staying, but with all that has been going on around here… well, it truly is hard to keep up and make each announcement. Not to use this as an excuse, but rather a lesson to be more informative to our summer guests. We are given, maybe, 5 months a year to update our exterior… then the snow starts coming and the ground starts freezing. We, the Iron Horse and the majority of ski/snow towns, scramble to get as much of our outdoor updates and construction done in the limited time we are given.
I apologize for the inconvenience you had during your stay and are sorry to hear that you may no longer be returning to our valley. Please remember although our town is going through many changes, there is always opportunity around every corner! |
