Puerto Morelos, Yucatan-Mayan Riviera, Mexico
(Property location is approximate) ?
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
Puerto Morelos is a town in Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, about 20km south of Cancun. It is both a fishing village and a resort and diving destination. It is located roughly halfway between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The pier in the center of town hosts snorkel and sport fishing boats while yachts dock in a man-made harbor just south of town. The village used to be the embarkation point for the car ferry to Cozumel, but that now leaves from Calica, a major port south of Playa Del Carmen.
It's the ideal location for those who want a quiet beach vacation away from the glitz, but with ample tourist amenities. The town has just two principal streets and you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes.
You can get by with English, but Spanish is not superfluous. Most places accept US dollars but not credit cards. Almost all prices are quoted in Mexican pesos and it is generally cheaper to pay in pesos, than in US dollars.
The reef just off shore is part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest reef system in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. In 1998 the reef in front of Puerto Morelos became a protected National Marine Park, preserving its rich biodiversity and making this area one of the best preserved of the Great Mesoamerican Reef. Buildings in Puerto Morelos are limited to three stories by local bylaws, to preserve the village type of character.
There are two parts to Puerto Morelos, the former fishing village on the coast, now Hotels, Condominiums, Restaurants and Tourist shops, and the second part about 2 Km. inland and adjacent to Highway 307, on the western side, called La Colonia by locals. The inland portion is mainly single level dwellings for the local workers.

ALBANYNice
Left on 10/04/2012 for a stay in June 2012
First of all I would like to thank andras, the manager for making our stay great. We stayed 10 nights, tried to stay longer but could not change flight. We arrived late at night , our flight was delayed an hour. Andras had a few snacks and drinks stocked in the condo for us. He took us around town on the first day to all the local places to get food and drinks. Told us which were good places to eat and what to avoid. This building is a little out of the way. There was a cell phone to call taxis if needed. We walked to town the first few evenings, saw a crocodile on our first walk to town. Then the rain came. We had a tropical storm come through and flooded the roads to town. No more walking. We used the taxis.
The unit itself is in a very nice small complex, only 14. The beach is small and the water has tons of big shells in it. That makes it very hard to walk in the water, we were disapointed that we could not go in the water with out something on you feet. The large shells that you see in the photos are from right here. Our unit was not very clean when we arrived. I had to sweep the floor the the first day and the counters needed to be cleaned. The cleaning lady did come by later in the week and it was very clean when she left. The Jacuzzi needed to be emptied out which I did myself and added some chemicals to clear the water up. I think it needs a new filter. We used it a lot after I changed the water. Beds were comfortable, our son loved the murphy bed. The water in the shower would change temperatures frequently. The ac in the master bedroom went out midway thru our stay, so we just turned up the one in the other room. My wife wanted the slider open at night anyway(the waves are really loud). We discovered how to get to PDC really cheap, and very comfortable.
Pros- very nice pool, cleaned every morning.
Had coffee every morning on roof, loved that.
Our own jacuzzi :)
Comfortable beds
Cons- No waves for body boarding.
Could use a paint job inside.
Bathrooms need some work.(but how much time do you spend in there)
Jacuzzi needs a new filter, and instructions in english for chemicals.
No ipod dock, We brought our own chargers.
Sending money through western union.Response from Andras Szabo - 01/16/2013
