Puerto Morelos, Yucatan-Mayan Riviera, Mexico
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
Puerto Morelos is a town in Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, about 20km south of Cancun. It is both a fishing village and a resort and diving destination. It is located roughly halfway between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The pier in the center of town hosts snorkel and sport fishing boats while yachts dock in a man-made harbor just south of town. The village used to be the embarkation point for the car ferry to Cozumel, but that now leaves from Calica, a major port south of Playa Del Carmen.
It's the ideal location for those who want a quiet beach vacation away from the glitz, but with ample tourist amenities. The town has just two principal streets and you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes.
You can get by with English, but Spanish is not superfluous. Most places accept US dollars but not credit cards. Almost all prices are quoted in Mexican pesos and it is generally cheaper to pay in pesos, than in US dollars.
The reef just off shore is part of the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the second largest reef system in the world and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. In 1998 the reef in front of Puerto Morelos became a protected National Marine Park, preserving its rich biodiversity and making this area one of the best preserved of the Great Mesoamerican Reef. Buildings in Puerto Morelos are limited to three stories by local bylaws, to preserve the village type of character.
There are two parts to Puerto Morelos, the former fishing village on the coast, now Hotels, Condominiums, Restaurants and Tourist shops, and the second part about 2 Km. inland and adjacent to Highway 307, on the western side, called La Colonia by locals. The inland portion is mainly single level dwellings for the local workers.

Calgary, CanadaFantastic, relaxing vacation in a beautiful location...
Left on 08/14/2011 for a stay in April 2011
This is a really well located unit, steps from the beach and minutes from the wonderful little village of Puerto Morelos. The pool area and grounds are extremely well kept, and the suite itself is excellent...nicely furnished and very comfortable.
The owner is easy going and helpful. I stayed for 10 days and I would definitely like to come back. Be sure to try the restaurants in the village. All are very friendly, reasonably priced, and provide good meals.Response from Andras Szabo - 08/29/2011

We just got back from staying at this great beachfront condo. Good security, lovely little town with a very authentic feel.
The condo is very well appointed with everything you could need. The owners are so nice and super helpful. They took us on a tour of the town to get our bearings and even stopped to let us stock up on groceries. Great list of restaurants with critiques, and fabulous infinity pool.
Very clean and modern.
Thank you andras and Maria for making our stay perfect!!Response from Andras Szabo - 04/23/2011

edmontonParadise found!!!
Left on 03/22/2011 for a stay in January 2011
This beachfront paradise is well worth a stay. The beautiful apartment with all the amenities and comforts of home is only steps away from the aquamarine Ocean and private beach awaiting you every day. My husband and I never wanted to leave the place and spent hour's ocean side snorkelling, sipping on Modelo's and soaking up the sun and surf. Complete blissful relaxation. The evenings were spent in the charming town of Puerto Morelos only about a 10 minute walk away or 2 minute cab. The people are kind and friendly, the nightlife mellow but extremely entertaining with live music at several venues and the food was spectacular! Our host andre was amazing; taking the time to tour us thru Puerto Morelos at the beginning of our stay. He was extremely generous with his time and accommodating of our every request. You don't want to miss out on the tropical gem!
Thanks again andre, we had a blast and will definitely be back!Response from Andras Szabo - 03/26/2011

Oliver, BC, Canadawe had a great time
Left on 01/07/2011 for a stay in December 2010
We had a great time in your apartment. It was super helpful that you took the time to show us around town when we arrived. All your suggestions and tips on where to shop and how to get around were great.
The apartment was really comfortable and pretty well equipped. The view from the bedroom was great to wake up to and it was nice and quiet. The bed was supercomfy.
Being right on a nice beach was great and the pool is really nice as well.
It was convenient that you could easily walk to town and we actually liked walking by the port area. We did not mind the view to the port, the only thing that is not that appealing is the old rusty ship.
All the best,
Regine and GerhardResponse from Andras Szabo - 02/25/2011

THE SHIP IS GONE!!! Yes, they took it apart over the last two weeks.

Omaha, NE and Merida, Yucatan, MexicoParadise Found at Puerto Morelos -- GREAT Condo
Left on 01/05/2011 for a stay in December 2010
Cancun is too glitzy, Playa del Carmen too crowded, and Tulum too chicly expensive. But little Puerto Morelos is just right. And this condo is the perfect place from which to explore it.
As travel writers/editors for InternationalLiving.com, we've stayed in countless hotels and rental apartments around the world. (Oh, the horror stories we have.) But this condo is a real treat.
The Palma Real complex is right on the beach and each unit has an ocean view. Ten seconds from your doorway your toes dig into soft white (and cool, never hot) Caribbean sands. Swimming is easy...no rocks or sea grass. No rough waves, either...a plus for timid swimmers. Don't worry about getting up early to lay claim to your beach chair under a shady palapa -- there are plenty. And because there are only 15 units in the complex, you often have the entire beach to yourself.
The cheerful staff at Palma Real do an EXCELLENT job keeping the grounds and huge pool spic-and-span clean. Same with the warm and inviting Jacuzzi that we enjoyed every evening.
The location is just about perfect, too. Far enough from Puerto Morelos to be quiet at all times but just a 15-minute walk to the town center and excellent restaurants. (Andre kindly clued us in on the best and the worst -- priceless!)
Although the condo is near the commercial pier, it's a non-issue. We enjoyed watching the ocean liners unloading -- only happens once or twice a week and is no bother at all.
We also appreciated the honors mini-bar and snack bar that Maria and Andre provide...a very special touch. The condo is well appointed with all necessary kitchen items, bath and beach towels, and a washer/dryer. (Travel light...you needn't bring more than your swimsuit and a toothbrush.)
We're fortunate to live just a few hours away, in Merida, the capital of Yucatan state. We've already decided that we'll return often to Puerto Morelos and when we do, we plan to stay again in this thoroughly modern and lovely condo!

Left on 11/18/2010 for a stay in October 2010
My wife thinks I am the bees knees...finally!
This was the best decision I have made in regards to a vacation. We had a private beach, an amazing chef, no tourists (!!!) a nice jacuzzi and a fresh food market right down the street. There was no knocking on our door in the morning, the staff cleaned while we were out and did a great job.
This was luxury...and if andras is reading this, thank you for everything.
