      Did not want to leave

Left on 04/05/2013 for a stay in March 2013

Mother Dear is a wonderful place to stay and I would love to go back there again. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting out on the porch either on the hammock chair or lying in the hammock and just watching the waves roll in while listening to all the birds. Debbie and Jim have thought of everything to make your stay here perfect. It is an easy walk to Banana azul or The Point restaurants for supper or a quick cab ride into town for a meal. It is an easy walk into town during the day. We also would take the short walk to the corner road and hop on the local bus that goes down as far as Manzanullo Beach area. You just flag down the bus and ring the bell when you want off. A great way to see the other beaches if you do not have a car. The beach in front of Mother Dear is great for swimming as it has a nice flat sandy beach which you can also walk on for miles. Very clean, awsome view, close to amenites, comfy bed, great shower, wonderful beach and fantastic hosts...you could not ask for anything more. There are also green and black dart frogs in the yard, if you cannot find any the gardener will find one for you. If I am back to Puerto Viejo, and I hope to be, I will definitely be staying at Mother Dear. Enjoy, we sure did.

      lovely !

We had a lovely stay at the end of the "green" season .The cottage was perfection .Not a thing left unthought of . Our hosts went all the way to make sure we had everything we needed ( Including hooking me up with a massage therapist friend "Pep" that gave me a massage right on the deck overlooking the beach ) ...the only thing that was initially a bother was the "gate" and being locked in dusk ..but once we made our concerns heard they gave us a key .We enjoyed the town of Puerto Viejo , but were happier once we discovered the gorgeous Manzanillo .If you make it down there look up Sergio for an amazing 1/2 day hiking , snorkeling and kayaking adventure !

Couldn't have had a nicer place to stay during a wet week on the Caribbean coast. The chalet is beautiful, inside and out. delightful bathroom. Cooking facilities, free drinks in the fridge. There was even a liquidiser if you want to make your own tropical smoothies! The situation is idyllic. We were cossetted for 5 days. Debbie and James could not have been more helpful, and were always there to answer our questions and give us local info, as well as help with transport. We were (almost) pleased that it rained so we had an excuse to stay in the chalet!

A spotless, polished hardwood ( inside and out) raised cabina right on the beach. All amenities for a week or more. Cook in or eat out at many small, inexpensive, international, fine or local eating spots. 15 minute walk on the beach into Peurto Viejo, a fascinating, small, safe and eclectic Carribean town. Fabulous jungle fauna and flora. Fresh exotic fruits and local foods. Owners, Jimmy and Debbie, live on site and have built their own home and the two raised cabinas. They are the most friendly, likeable and helpful owners we have met on our many world travels. A bonus to have them on-site. This was our our second stay (11 days), longer this time, and even more enjoyable.

      Wonderful host and view

Left on 08/14/2012 for a stay in July 2012

James and Debbie are such great host to this clean cottage with a spectacular view. They greeted us on arrival, were available whenever we needed something and were there at the end when we had a transportation problem. What pleasant and helpful hosts.

The cottage itself was clean, the kitchen was well equipped and the view is stunning. The ocean is just a few steps from the cottage porch and we enjoyed listening to the waves day and night.

The town of Puerto Viejo is probably about a mile walk walk down the beach and we walked it several times during the week we were there. We didn't have a car while there and don't see a need for one. Cabs are inexpensive if you need to get anywhere but we normally just walked. If I returned I would consider renting a bike for a week, there are lots of them available and they are cheap.

When we return to the area we will definitely stay at Mother Dear.

      Best to all

      Wonderfully Perfect

Left on 03/21/2012 for a stay in March 2012

Mother Dear was absolutely wonderful! We could not have stayed at a better place. Everything was very comfortable and clean and well maintained. We had plenty of privacy and it was very quiet at night (except for the waves and the jungle creatures of course!) It is close enough to walk to town but far enough to feel like you are on your own private island. Jimmy and Debbie could not have been better hosts. They went out of their way to make our stay pleasant and answered all of our questions. It was great having such nice hosts in an unfamiliar country - especially when we don't speak Spanish very well at all. We always felt very safe at Mother Dear. We cannot wait until we can return!!!

      Truly Elegant!!!

Left on 02/23/2012 for a stay in February 2012

My husband and I spent our belated honeymoon in Puerto Viejo at Mother Dear and it was fantastic!! Our cottage was perfect for us and is even nicer than it looks in the pictures. James and Debbie are incredibly sweet and generous hosts. Their cottages are beautiful and have everything you need to relax and enjoy the beauty of the nature that surrounds you (birds, sloths, wild horses, sunrises, etc). The beach is just steps away and is uncrowded to say the least! The water is warm and and the waves are the perfect background "music" for a nap or an amazing nights sleep. The deck of the cottage was our favorite hang-out... morning, noon and night. The kitchen has everything you need to make your own meals but the cottage is also walking/biking distance from many great places to eat. There is a safe for your valuables and the property is enclosed by a fence (which does not obstruct your second-story, picture -perfect view of the beach) and is locked at night for added security and peace of mind.
We will be recommending Mother Dear to everyone we know and will definitely be planning a return trip of our own!! You can't go wrong with a vacation at Mother Dear!! Many thanks to James and Debbie!!

We felt right at home when we spent the better part of a week in Puerto Viejo at Mother Dear. The cottages are beautifully crafted - like living in a piece of fine furniture. With the beach right out your front door, it is a little less than a 1 mile walk down the beach to downtown Puerto Viejo. Plenty of wild birds and lizards grace the grounds. We were also lucky to be visited by a pair of wild horses, and a momma sloth with her baby. Jimmy and Debbie were perfect hosts - available and helpful without hovering. Hated to leave.

Both my husband and I cannot thank Jimmy and Debbie enough for our wonderful stay at Mother Dear. It was just what the doctor ordered! We were able to truly relax and unwind during our week-long vacation. Jimmy and Debbie were the perfect hosts: helpful, kind and a wealth of information. They are just as involved as you want them/ or not want them to be. The cottage is absolutely spotless and a true oasis. Every night, we would go to sleep with the sound of crashing waves and wake up in the morning to the same sound. We ended up cooking at Mother Dear more often than we anticipated because we simply enjoyed the cottage and environment so much. It is, without a doubt, the best place to stay in the Puerto Viejo area. If you're looking to go to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, this is the place to stay and unwind. Wonderful!

Let me just start by saying the pictures do not do this place justice! We wish we would have stayed there the whole week. Jimmy and Debbie, the owners, were onsite and wonderful. We thought they were pulling our leg about an alligator in the area and then sure enough the first morning of our stay - 8 foot alligator in the bushes on the beach! (Don't worry it got moved back to the river where it belonged) The attention to detail they put into their cottages and the stay of their guests was above and beyond! Thank you for making a great trip even greater!

      A Romantic Oceanfront Paradise

Left on 06/27/2011 for a stay in March 2011

My husband and I spent four days at Mother Dear in Puerto Viejo. We had been staying in San Jose for two weeks prior to our stay at Mother Dear and we had spent an active day white water rafting on the Pacure River before arriving in Puerto Viejo. We were thrilled to arrive at Mother Dear and to be able to relax and enjoy the spectacular surroundings of the property.

We had plans to do some touring and activities during our stay in Puerto Viejo however we were so busy enjoying our beach house that we couldn't leave! The cottage was equipped with everything we needed to enjoy meals at home. Everything about the beach house was amazing - the view, the decor, the architecture etc. We did venture in to town a couple of times for supper and Debbie and Jimmy gave us some great recommendations for restaurants.

Every day we either went for a walk or run on Playa Negra(sometimes both) and we attempted to swim in the beautiful Carribean Ocean but the crashing waves got the better of us. We found it safer to enjoy the surf from the water's edge.

One of the friendliest places in Puerto Viejo was Caribeans Coffee Shop. Yummy ice cream and free wi fi...the owner made us feel welcome and if we had have been staying longer in Puerto Viejo we would have made Caribeans a daily occurence.

Jimmy, Debbie, Honey, Tiny and Minkie were wonderful hosts and we hope to return to Puerto Viejo soon.

      We miss porch naps!!!

Left on 06/23/2011 for a stay in June 2011

My husband and I stayed in Mother Dear for 4 days and 3 nights of our Costa Rican honeymoon. From the time we booked our trip, James and Debbie were wonderful to work with. They answered all of our questions and made Costa Rican newbies feel right at ease. We wanted a relaxing, secluded vacation and that is what we got. We stayed in one of their gorgeous cabinas in early June and never felt too hot. The nighttime breeze and fans were just perfect for keeping us cool. We brought our own double-nest hammock that we strung up on the porch, but they had a single-nest too. We spent a lot of time relaxing on the porch in our hammock or eating fresh pineapple and drinking cold rum and cokes while staring at the ocean. The beach was very secluded and we saw about as many dogs and horses as we did people!

Debbie and James had great advice for where to go locally for lunch, dinner, and adventures. We had the best homemade tortilla chips and guacamole at Banana azul, which was a leisurely walk down the beach. We tried to go to Chili Rojo (per D&Js; advice) in town, but it was closed the night we ventured out. A word of advice - do not go to El Dorado (right next door). My "chef specialty" swordfish meal was partially uncooked and pretty bad (just an fyi, not a fault of Debbie & James).

The dogs were sweet, the grounds were immaculate, the beach was hypnotizing, the breeze was amazing, and we even enjoyed the rainy evenings. Thank you Debbie and James we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!

Crazy, Awesome Honeymoon puts all other vacations in 2nd place!

Left on 06/17/2011 for a stay in June 2011

My new wife and I are generally laid back, kindergarten teachers from Tennessee. We enjoy our quiet time together at home and the company of friends and family when we do go out. That being said, taking our honeymoom to Mother Dear seemed like the perfect fit for our taste and it was. The beautifully constructed cabins are private and equipped with all the comforts one might need for an extended stay on the beach or a weekend getaway. We arrived and were instantly blown away by the hospitality of Debbie and Jim and the craftsmanship of the cabins. Upon arrival, they give you the grand tour of the gorgeous property and present you with keys to the castle. They will also be there for you the rest of your trip to recommend adventures, local hotspots/restaurants and arrange taxi services. While the tranquility of Mother Dear is certainly an endearing quality, Costa Rica has a wild side too! My wife and I could not ignore the excitement of rafting, hiking beautiful beaches, visiting the wildlife refuge, snorkling and ziplining through the jungle. We became adventure travelers in one week. Most of the tour companies will pick you up or drop you off at the gates of Mother Dear. We loved the ease of creating daily adventures and returning to such a magical spot when our day was done. When we weren't adventuring, lounging around Mother Dear, or swimming in the ocean, it is only a 15 minute walk on the beach to to town of Puerto Viejo. We made this trip often, rain or shine. The town is full of restaurants, shops and great people watching. The food was amazing! Casado from Lidia's was delicious and authentic Carribean fare. Overall, it was a honeymoon everyone else should be jealous of! If you are considering traveling to Costa Rica, I highly recommend Mother Dear. Once you've been, you will not want to be anywhere else. Mother Dear is truly a magical vacation destination.

Slice of Paradise with adventure, Comfort and Care on the Side!

Left on 06/13/2011 for a stay in June 2011

I chose to stay at "Mother Dear" because my mother and I were taking a 'mother-daughter' trip to Costa Rica and I found it fitting. It was my mom's first time out of the United States and I wanted to go to a place away from so much tourism. Mother Dear was a perfect place to relax after a day of adventuring. We awoke to the waves crashing on the shore then walked the beach into the center and enjoyed market day where we ran into Debbie and she showed us how to pick out the sweetest pineapple. Debbie and Jim are so nice and became a part of our adventures because when we would return from horse back riding on the beach and through the rain-forest, or swimming, biking all over the map of Puerto Viejo,or snorkeling they were interested in our day and we had someone with whom to share our adventures. We also got to learn a local perspective of living in Paradise! We enjoyed the hammocks, kitchen, porch, the the amazing view of the Caribbean, the beautiful shower (hot and good pressure!) and especially the comfortable bed! Mother Dear was our favorite place we stayed in Costa Rica (and we stayed in very nice places) because it had a simple, elegant charm that calls you back. We will be going back!

      Best place in Puerto Viejo!!

Left on 06/02/2011 for a stay in May 2011

The pictures do not do the place justice. Everything was just perfect for our arrival, and 4-night stay. Debbie and Jim are the perfect hosts. They made dinner reservations for us, answered all of our questions about the area, gave great directions to the best restaurants, and were just nice people in general for our entire stay. The drive to PV is brutal, but once you get there it is well worth it! My new bride and I did not want to leave as it began to feel like home. The open air cabina was beautiful top to bottom. All of the beautiful flowers on site were well maintained. And, at night there is a gate all around the property that Jim locks up so we felt safe for the entire stay. Beaches were amazing, food was great, people are nice. I would definitely recommend Mother Dear to anyone and everyone, and I can't wait to return for an anniversary.

One of our favorite parts about Mother Dear is waking up in the early morning and hearing the birds chirping outside, and the waves crashing on the beach, and the morning breeze blowing through the front of the cabin. Often we would just lay in bed, or sit on the front porch, looking out at the ocean. I honestly believe there is not a better view, or deal, in PV.

      What a Treat!

Left on 05/19/2011 for a stay in May 2011

No kidding. We truly rated all areas excellent. We were so pleased and treated so well by our hosts Debbie and Jim. They pursued any need or want we had, looked out for us, helped with directions and planning without being intrusive. Their new rental is well-maintained and very clean, not to mention how beautiful it is with all the wood.
Debbie and Jim did so many nice little touches to make us feel welcomed and pampered. The house is elevated and provides easy bird and beach watching from the porch. Their location was on the edge of town, quiet, and very central to most of the activities and parks. We are happy to highly recommend this rental and hope to return to Mother Dear.
Also, if you visit the Carribean side and have the time, take the canal ride from Moin to Tortuguera with Modesto, owner of Francesca Boat Tours. He's a great guide and lots of fun.

My wife and I had an amazing time at Mother Dear. But I must warn you, if you stay at Mother Dear, you'll never be happy anywhere else in Costa Rica. Jimmy and Debbie are awesome, as are their cleaning staff and all their friends (oh and this includes their dogs, Tiny and Pepper)! The place is awesome, super clean and the perfect location just steps from the ocean. Ahhh... falling asleep to the waves and sounds of nature.

A perfect place to unplug and reset. My wife did yoga every morning on the balcony with Roe (one of Jimmy/Debbie's friends) while looking at the ocean. I loved playing in the waves and then heading back to rinse off in the outdoor shower. The beach is great with waves just the right size.

If ever possible we'll absolutely return. Save yourself the time and reserve a place at Mother Dear!

      Relaxing, Beautiful and Romantic

Left on 04/30/2011 for a stay in April 2011

My husband and I just spent a thoroughly beautiful and transforming week at Mother Dear cottages. As I am a bit (okay, highly) particular about my lodgings, and quick to be disappointed, we selected Mother Dear after spending days and days online researching, and even touring several places in the area upon arrival. We were thoroughly delighted with our choice.

Mother Dear's location is excellent. It is oceanfront, so you are lulled to sleep by the sound of crashing waves and you awake to the sound of crashing waves. And not only is it right on the ocean, but unlike most of the other oceanfront options we saw while walking the beach from Manzanillo to Puerto Viejo, Mother Dear has a nice, perfectly empty stretch of beach in front of it.

The cottages themselves are a perfect compliment to the bountiful, tropical flower gardens in which they are situated. They are crafted from a very fine quality almond wood. The design is simple yet elegant, which allows one to commune with nature while feeling protected and pampered.

The ocean-view balconies are so nice that it is a challenge to leave them for the beach or the town a few minutes down the road. We spent hours on them watching the waves crash against the shore, feeling the salt breeze against our skin and feeding the occasional wild horse which would meander onto the grounds.

Privacy was a concern for us when planning the trip and I am happy to report that we felt as though we were the only guests.

Also, I am not normally a people person, especially while on vacation, but Jim and Debbie were really very pleasant. They were also very, very helpful. They gave us day trip ideas, connected us with guides, and made arrangements for one of the best massages ever.

In closing, I would not hesitate to recommend Mother Dear. We will definitely be returning next year. As they are new, they are currently one of Puerto Viejo's best kept secrets.

My wife and I stayed at Mother Dear for 4 nights on our honeymoon and we absolutely loved it. The house was beautiful and very well kept and supplied with everything you'd need (fridge, coffee pot, pots, pans, dishes.) Jimmy and Debbie are two of the sweetest and most sincere people we've ever met. They made us feel welcome from the start but were never in our hair.

It's about a 15 minute walk to downtown Puerto Viejo and literally 30 yards from the beach. Very near Mother Dear is the hotel Banana azul where you can find drinks, food, couples massages, etc... We would get breakfast there before we started our day.

The front gate is locked every night and the normally amiable dogs (Honey & Tawney) turn into ardent guard dogs with your safety in mind. We felt safe for our entire stay.

We're so glad we found Mother Dear and we're sure you will be too!

      Mother Dear = Perfection

Left on 04/02/2011 for a stay in March 2011

My husband and I came to Mother Dear as a our last few days in Costa Rica, after a very active week in Monteverde and arenal. It couldn't have been a more perfect way to end our trip. Jimmy and Debbie are two of the nicest, most hospitable people to welcome you to Puerto Viejo. They were there to greet us when we arrived to show us around and get us settled in and to bid us farewell when we left at 1am on Sunday to make our flight. The cottage that they built overlooking the ocean is heaven. It is in mint condition and the wood is truly gorgeous. We loved the campy and beachy feel that this cottage has and you can literally hear the ocean waves as you are going to bed. Just perfect for beach lovers! We were able to cook breakfast each morning in the great kitchen that is brand new, which was a great help to start out our day. The property overall is extremely well kept and beautiful, with gorgeous plants and wildlife (horses come and say hi to you!). There are special touches such as hammocks put up for you to relax during the day if you want and games if you feel like having a mellow night in. I can't think of anything negative honestly. We had an amazing time. We would recommend this to any couple looking for a peaceful and serene retreat.

      Thanks Jimmy and Debbie!!!

We fell in love with this place.. It was magical!

Left on 04/01/2011 for a stay in March 2011

I and my husband spent ten days in Costa Rica in March 2011 - first Monteverde, then arenal and the end of our stay was in Puerto Viejo at Mother Dear (It was the most wonderful place we1ve stayed in Costa Rica). I found Mother Dear on tripadvisor and after seeing the beautiful pictures and excellent feedback posted from previous visitors I didn`t hesitate at all to book it. The place looked gorgeous from the pictures but I have to admit that it was way more beautiful in real! Just takes your breath away! The location, the romantic room, the beautiful bathroom, the amazing balcony, nice kitchen - they couldn`t be better. One of the nights we cooked dinner with a Swedish couple we met first in arenal and then we shared the same route to Monteverde and Puerto Viejo. We had our dinner at the terrace, watched the waves and stars and it was just magical! The beach in front of Mother Dear (called "Playa Negra") is excellent and you can go deep into the water and swim when the waves are not too strong. The beach was most of the time if not all the time just for ourselves.
Debbie and Jimmie were extremely hospitable and kind and helped us organize our activities for the Voleo Valcano and visit of a local house where they produced hand-made chocolate. We strongly reccommend Mother Dear! It is the perfect romantic place! We will definitely go back there soon!

We loved our hosts: Jim and Deb gave us great advice in advance about transportation, hotel in San Jose, as well as local ideas for restaurants, and for exploring the area. they were friendly and warm. We loved the beautiful new casita which was immaculate, attractive and so spacious. We cooked in with ease when we wanted to. A perfectly comfy king sized bed for relaxing, made naps a natural. However the beautiful seaside views drew us out to our porch, and to early morning walks in the surf. Md is a 10 minute walk down the beach to town, where small restaurants and cafes abound. This is a great spot for lovers and nature lovers as well.

I've never written a review before but I feel compelled to let everyone know how special this place is. My wife and I had an absolutely fantastic vacation at Mother Dear. I highly reccomend it for couples who want to get away, relax, rest, and recharge. The "cabins" are beautiful, comfortable, and catch a refreshing ocean breeze. We spent 50% of our week sitting on our patio, taking in the incredible view, and enjoying the solitude. Town is only a 15 minute walk down the beach when you get tired of making your own meals. The place is wonderful. I hope it stays this way forever. The hosts, James and Debbie, are great people and will make you feel at home. We were truly sad to leave.

7 Days in Costa Rican Heaven

Left on 03/20/2011 for a stay in March 2011

The online pictures of Mother Dear do not do it full justice. Jimmy and Debbie have thought of everything a vacationing couple could wish for. The newly built unit was designed by these owners who understand what adventurous visitors to the Carribean coast are looking for. The accomodation provided a very comfortable sleeping, cooking, eating, relaxing, and quiet experience (except for the sound of the waves).

This wonderful couple anticipated and looked after our every wish, whim and interest for the week we spent with them. It made a big difference to have them on site in their own separate residence for any questions that arose.

The location is spectacular! 50 metres from the ocean. The 50 metres covers 30 metres of partially cleared jungle turned into gardens, 20 metres of a clean sand, "private" beach and warm clear water which varies from big surf to calm waves.

In the raised (on stilts) cabina, you awake in the morning in your king size bed, and gaze out at the Carribean sea. Your breakfast, self prepared of the plentiful, fresh fruit in the area, can be eaten on your own open, covered front room, while sitting at a bar stool overlooking the ocean.

The location is about 1 1/2 km from the funky, quirky village of Puerto Viejo which can be reached by a 15/20 minute stroll or a 5 minute, $4.00 taxi (which Jimmy will call for you). The village itself, a thow back to the 60's, has everything you may need to eat, whether you choose to cook for yourself or eat out at the many and varied eating spots. As well, the road past the village has endless small "dining" spots covering most of the globe in their menu..

As good as this sounds, the highlight of our visit was Jimmy and Debbie. They are wonderful, caring, attentive, helpful and experienced hosts. We will return, for longer, to enjoy the property, the food, the area and its people, or even just to visit with Jimmy and Debbie again.

Left on 03/10/2011 for a stay in March 2011

We recently spent four nights at Mother Dear. It was great. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. The cottage had everything you needed for a totally relaxing vacation on the beach. We wished we could have stayed longer. Debbie and Jim were great. The helped us anyway they could and was always available to answer any questions we had. They even gave us a ride to our next destination several miles down the road. We needed a four wheel drive for our next stop but couldn't rent one because nothing was available so Jim loaded all our luggage up in his four wheel drive and took us to the next house that we rented.

We can't say enough great things about these two cottages and Debbie and Jim. We will definately be back and will bring friends next time to rent the other cottage. Jim even built us a bond fire one night on the beach. It was great!!!

Hope to see you both again soon!!

Jim and Debbie have a true slice of heaven in their hands. I felt that "at home feel" the second I walked in the gate. I am truely grateful that my girlfriend put in the extra search time, found, and booked Mother Dear. It was a truely relaxing experience, set among a beautiful location, quiet beach, and the envy of every passerby, but don't tell anyone that. Jim and Debbie are two of the kindest warm hearted people a person could meet. Their wonderful attitudes and beautiful property was an absolute dream. I can't wait to bring my family and rent the whole place. At the end of my stay I was ready for the hectic life that lay ahead of me, but every day I am thinking that Jim and Debbie have got it figured out. Definately a great place for couples in love that want a quiet, clean, and wonderful experience.

Mother Dear has got to be one of the most awesome cabinas on the Costa Rican carribean. Jimmy and Debbie have created 2 cabinas on a property surrounded by luxurious gardens and elevated so that you look directly on to Playa Negra. It's a perfectly tranquil setting. Both cabinas are less than a year old and are expertly crafted with almendro wood that has been expertly finished. The cabina is finely appointed with hand made furniture, a fully equipped galley kitchen, a king size bed, an exquisite bathroom and an outdoor porch with Teak bar stools, hammock and cafe table. When we finally decided to descend it was 50 meters to one of the most beuatiful beaches I've ever seen. I'll be back...

Listening to the pounding surf, watching the wild horses graze in the front yard and hearing the sweet sounds of the myriad of birds that surrounded us made for the perfect experience. The house was beautifully appointed, glistened from top to bottom and just made our stay in Pto Viejo perfect. The location to the beach, the distance to town and incredible fusion food that we got to enjoy guarantees that we will return one day soon to this magical place. And if this wasn't good enough, our hosts exceeded our wildest expectations by their friendliness, helpfulness and kindness. I have been making trips to the Puerto Viejo area for a long time, and I must say that of all the places I have stayed Mother Dear was without doubt the place which I will remember the most.

The location on Playa Negra is very special. The beach is vast and most of the time it seemed like we had it all to ourselves. In fact on some days we ran into more wild horses than we did other people.

The cottage was total luxury: beautifully built and extremely comfortable. With the veranda doors open we could lie in bed looking out at the ocean. The kitchen was one of the best equipped we have ever come across while traveling which was perfect for us as we cooked most of our own meals. Complimentary sodas and a few other essentials were also provided which was a very nice touch.

Five of the most relaxing days I can remember having in a long time...this place really is a paradise. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality Jim and Debbie!

One of the most important things to me when I travel is having warm and professional hosts. This is especially true when you are in a foreign country. As an Innkeeper back home, I guess you could say that I have high expectations. I can truly say that Jim and Debbie fulfilled my expectations and beyond.
The lodging also exceeds expectations. When I have stayed in cottage style rentals in the past, I would often notice that the dishes etc. are kind of funky. This is untrue for Mother Dear, whoever cleans does it immaculately.
I recommend staying here for a comfortable, safe and enriching experience.

My husband and I stayed at Mother Dear for our honeymoon in January. Everything about our stay was amazing! To begin with, Jimmy and Debbie were incredible! We came to Costa Rica not speaking much, if any Spanish. Jimmy and Debbie were so helpful throughout our entire stay, from calling us cabs, telling us where things were in the town, to recommending activities and restaurants. They helped us with anything we needed and made our stay wonderful. The property and the cottages are beautiful. The location is great, throughout the time of our trip we pretty much had the entire beach in front of our cottage to ourselves. The cottages are located a very short cab ride to town, or a little bit of a walk (which we did most days). The cottage itself was excellent, it was beautifully made, and it was spotless and very comfortable to stay in. Jimmy and Debbie also have two cute dogs that we loved as well (they are very well behaved and friendly). I would recommend staying at Mother Dear for anyone who is looking to stay in a privately located, beautiful cottage right on the beach, we couldn't have asked for more, thank you Jimmy and Debbie!

The craftsmanship is stunning -- every detail of the cottage is beautiful. There are screens all along the roofline which allow fresh breezes in. There's a kitchen with sink and gas burners so you can cook for yourself when you're not inclined to visit one of the many restaurants downtown. There's another hotel with a bar and pool a short walk down the beach so you can hang out with other travelers when you want to, and then return to the lovely privacy of your cottage. We knew that Mother Dear would be a special, stunning place, but it exceeded our hopes! We stayed there for the first few days of November. We arrived at Mother Dear on the day of our honeymoon after a beautiful drive from San Jose and we were both so pleasantly pleased once we pulled in to the gated property.

The comfortable atmosphere engulfed us immediately and we knew that we had chosen the right place.

Jimmy and Debbie greeted us with warm hugs and showed us to our cottage which was perfectly set near the beach.

Once up the steps and onto the deck, the mesmerizing view encapsulated us and we dove right into to relaxation and our honeymoon!

The inside of the cottage is such a work of art and the carefulness and attention to detail that they have spent creating, shines through with every inch of the house.

Every morning at sunrise we would open up the double doors and gaze at the ocean from the comfort of our bed while sipping on delicious Costa Rican Coffee.

The beach is very private and perfect for swimming, walks or just hanging out with a fresh Imperial!

Left on 11/29/2010 for a stay in November 2010

When my husband and I walked past the beautiful topical gardens and up the stairs into this hand-crafted, beautifully decorated and immaculately clean cottage with a clear view of the ocean - we both said, "We could live here forever!"
Everything you need to "live" in this cottage is there. The whole place is a joy to experience: I loved cooking in the well-socked kitchen, grilling on the patio, dining by candle light on the expansive porch. We both loved waking up with the huge folding doors open wide providing us with a view of the ocean from the comfy king sized bed. Taking a shower in the bathroom is like taking a shower outside since the walls of this gorgeous ceramic tile and slate bath room are partly screens!
Debbie and Jimmy did everything for us and anticipated our needs. This included driving us into town and going shopping with us to buy our groceries (which helps when you aren't fluent in Spanish!). They introduced us to Neil who met with us and found out our interests and planned a day of exactly what we wanted to do and guided us (for much less $ than any tour company).
We were never hot because there such good air flow due to the fact that the cottage it set up high and catches the ocean breezes. One morning while we were having breakfast on the porch wild horses walked right up to our cottage! We saw the horses many times after that.
In short, this place is simply divine. Five star all the way. Debbie and Jimmy couldn't have created a more perfect place nor could they possible improve on the service they provide to their guests. They feel like family to us. We just left there on November 24th and we really miss them already.

We are certain our week at Mother Dear will prove to be one of our favorite and most memorable vacations. From the moment we arrived we were pleasantly overwhelmed by the warm and sincere hospitality extended to us by our hosts James and Debbie. The property is paradise but they insured or experience was truly superb. They went to great lengths each day to help with connecting us to local sites, guides, directions, restaurant recommendations, etc.
We were also really impressed with how acurate the information on the website was. The pictures truly depict the property and accomodations. The cottage is beautiful, spotlessly clean and well stocked. We loved sleeping to the sounds of the ocean and local wildlife. The close proximity to the beach was why we decided on Mother Dear and we were not disappointed. Many of the other properties say they are on the beach but fail to mention there is a road and other properties between them and the beach. Mother Dear has a beautiful and unobstructed view.
We were also a little concerned about the lack of air conditioning and all the talk of bugs. However, neither of these turned out to be a concern. The cottage is so well ventilated and equipped with fans that it was always cool and comfortable. There are bugs in Costa Rica...it's the jungle...but they were not a bother to us and we didn't have a single bite!
Our experience was truly wonderful. My only fear is it will not be available the next time we want to book it because I know others will be returning and spreading the word!

Great location; Great value; Impeccable cabins

Left on 10/11/2010 for a stay in October 2010

These elegant cabins have a lovely and convenient beachfront location. They are the first beachfront cabins you reach in Puerto Viejo; all of the others are a longer drive. It's close enough to town to walk in for a night out, and it's far enough away to allow me to go for a long run on the beach with no one else visible. We heard only the sound of the waves and birdsong.

They also beat out the competition in attention to detail and care of construction. Since they are two story, they have a better view, better sea breeze, and they are safer too. Jimmy and Debbie have carefully thought out all the little details in their cabins. (Nice mattresses; good quality sheets; broadband wifi internet; well equipped kitchen; flowers in the room; good security; reading lights; a room safe; beach towels; good size refrigerator; a pleasant cross breeze; nicely finished hardwood; romantic candles; a little library; big hardwood hooks to hang things; beautifully clean; even sailorly knotwork on the hammock hooks) Since I'm a long time resident of Costa Rica, I especially appreciate the quality electrical and plumbing work, and the water pressure. Grounded three prong plugs! Everyone is turned on by different things I guess :-)

Very good value for the money!

Modern and charming cottage in paradise.

Left on 10/04/2010 for a stay in September 2010

Mother dear was the perfect fit for my boyfriend and I. It's just far enough away from downtown Puerto Viejo to be feel secluded and romantic but still close enough to bike in and out of town. The cottage was beautiful, very modern and well thought out. We cooked our dinner and ate by candlelight (provided, most thoughtfully, by James) on the deck, facing the ocean. The kitchen is well equipped and the bathroom was wonderful. Clean, good plumbing, hot water. Basically all the comforts of home set in a tropical beach scenario.
The cottage is set right on the beach and we ate all of our meals staring out at the gorgeous view. Wild horses, lightning storms over the ocean, innumerable birds, butterflies and even dolphins are a few of the amazing things we witnessed.
In addition to the setting and cottage itself, James was an important element in making our stay a wonderful one. He really went above and beyond to help in any way he could.

I don't even know where to begin. I didn't believe lots were allowed to be this close to the sea. These amazing cottages that have you up in the air twenty feet looking out over an incredibly lush backyard where wild horses come to graze not to mention an incredible panorama of the Caribbean leave you in awe. With at least three hammocks per cottage, relaxing is a natural state when combined with the beautiful wooden deck and luxury accommodations. Hot showers in a beautiful bathroom, making it easy to clean off from the walks on the beach and dips in the sea located 50 meters away. Although my girlfriend and I did not get a chance to meet Debbie because she was out of the country at the time, James serves as twenty people with his ability to provide you with anything you could need from travel suggestions, at your door taxi service, helping you out of a bind, ensuring your utmost comfort and most importantly being an incredibly nice, gracious individual to talk to and laugh with. As a bonus you can easily ride a bike into Puerto Viejo a 10min ride where you can mix in with the diverse community, eat wonderful Caribbean food, dance, listen to live music and just hang out.

all the comforts I could imagine in the midst of adventure

Left on 09/26/2010 for a stay in September 2010

When I inquired about this gorgeous rental on Flip Key my sister and I opted for this more remote stay in Costa Rica over the usual all-inclusive in the Caribbean.

And boy, were we ever glad to experience Costa Rica for the first time! James was instrumental in calming fears, anticipating any of our needs, and he was a great resource. If he didn't know the answer, he was quick to ask his contacts or get on the internet to find out.

The home itself is well laid-out with thoughtful touches such as:
      - a convenient and subtle clothes line on the balcony
      - lots of hooks, racks, a closet
      - airflow that gets right through the home while minimizing insects
      - convenient light switches, power outlets, etc.

The property felt very secured, with a system to deter intruders but all open and accessible to the beach (Playa Negra) during the day.

It was more than comfortable, clean and relaxing. We did feel it was such a secret relief to return to after claiming to our friends/ family back home that we spent the days exerting ourselves in many available tours, or bike riding to the local beaches (Cocles, Punta Uva), or trekking around the towns. There is the conveniently located Gecko Trails and facilities of Banana azul close by, as well as the town of Puerto Viejo within walking distance. However at dark we felt it necessary to use a taxi whenever leaving Mother Dear. It was not a big deal but something to consider for wanting to eat out, do some evening shopping, etc in town.

The great vibe from our host, proximity to nature/beach, comforts of our rental -- all of it made leaving so difficult. After seeing our pictures, our parents are talking about visiting themselves. Can't wait to visit again, I would highly recommend this stay.

Attention to detail, simple elegance right on the beach

Left on 09/26/2010 for a stay in September 2010

We live in Cartago, Costa Rica and visit Puerto Viejo several times a year. This is the best spot we have found. A well built tropical style cabin with all ammenities located right on the beach. Mother Dear has everything we needed to just relax from coffee in the morning to bedside reading lights in the evening. We found we didn't even use our car except to pick up a few groceries.

The most beautiful cottage in Costa Rica..

Left on 09/13/2010 for a stay in September 2010

This cottage was the perfect place to stay for some relaxation. It is a second floor cottage that sits about 50 feet from the beach. It has amazing views and sounds of the ocean. The cottage itself is amazing; from the handmade wood curtain holders to the handmade towel hangers. This place also has all the amenities of a kitchen. The deck was our favorite place to sit and have a morning cup of coffee while watching the waves. It was also a great spot to watch the sunset.
The propertys landscape was beautiful with lots of bright flowers and green plants. The owners, Jimmy and Debbie, did an amazing job making this such a wonderful place to stay. I would recommend staying here over any other place in town.
