    Additional Location Information

Congo Bongo is located 4 hours south east of San Jose in the Gandoca Manzanillo wildlife refuge at the Caribbean coast.

On our property of 15 acre we have many flowers, fruit and giant Rainforest trees.
We have a private walkway to the quiet, unspoiled beach, featuring the beautiful blue Caribbean Sea.

The best snorkeling in the area can be found right offshore. The sea water is safe and no riptide or dangerous coral reefs are reported.
The wetlands and surrounding forest areas contain a great diversity of species, many only locally sited, endemic to this area: crocodiles, alligators, otters, wild bores, ocelots, pumas, pacas, sloths, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, white-throated capuchin monkeys, and numerous other species of birds, reptiles and amphibians.

During weekends it is crowed with local people who like to spend time on the beach and in the bar.

Manzanillo (1km) is a small fishing village with restaurants, grocers, a dive shop and a boutique. Town children play soccer on the beach day and night in front of Maxi's famous seafood restaurant.

Puerto Viejo (14 km) there you will find a Bank, doctor, drugstore, boutiques, bars, restaurants, supermarket and nightlife.

We ( Daan Nelemans the owner , Marisol my wife , Masai our daughter and Ernesto my brother in-law ) live here year round in the property of Congo-Bongo and there will be always somebody to take care of the clients here .

      A Magical Jungle Experience

Left on 09/13/2011 for a stay in August 2011

My Husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon. We are a young couple in our early 30's and thought It was by far the best place to stay if you are going to be traveling to Puerto Viejo/Manzanillo. We were a couple steps away to our own private beach where it was just us and the water was crystal clear and calm. You are literally staying in an open air bungalow in the middle of the rainforest. Monkeys were hanging out up above the bungalow every morning. It was fabulous. The owner who is always on the grounds is very helpful and friendly and even planned a kayak fishing trip for us with a local. We had an unforgettable time here that will last in our memories forever, and would do it all over again in a minute. Very reasonably priced also!

The lodge was very nice and the owner Dann was very helpful. The only negative things I must note is that the water turned my hair orange and also there were too many stray malnourished dogs in the town. This was very upsetting to me. Other than this, it was perfect.

Not your typical vacation rental - exotic and different!

Left on 08/24/2011 for a stay in August 2011

My husband and I and our extended family visited Congo Bongo for our anniversary. We had the Dream house and our family stayed in the River House.

Pros - Daan's hospitality was wonderful and he was always willing to help us with excursions and questions/problems we had. The grounds are beautiful and the wildlife was amazing (howler monkeys, sloths, butterflies and lots of bugs) The beach is isolated and pretty much your own. The furnishings are very artistic and Daan has an incredible eye for design. Congo Bongo truly makes you feel like you are living in the jungle, outside. There are lots of fun day excursions from this area.

Cons - there is no seafood available to cook at Congo Bongo. The stores in Puerto Viejo or Manzanillo did not sell it and the fishermen sell to the restaurants according to Daan. Vegans, beware - you will have to eat out to get seafood. The humidity and heat were bad during the day. Only 1 bedroom has a/c, but at night it cooled down some so you could sleep with just a fan. We loved the critters, but if you don't like bugs and the heat, this is not the place for you. Cooking on the grill was a challenge, we couldn't buy charcoal starter anywhere and there were no metal cooking utensils for the grill. Not much privacy when you are on the toilet and someone is in your room. We had problems with hot water in one bedroom in the River House - even after Daan showed us how to work it. Our safe in the Dream House would not lock, but it wasn't an issue for us since we could lock our room. The snorkeling/diving around Manzanillo and Punta Uva were a major disappointment. We only did 1 dive because it was so poor and our snorkelers were also very disappointed.

All in all, this was a pretty unique and amazing place to stay and we're glad we did it. When you travel to a place like this, you can't expect it to be like home and you adapt and enjoy it for what it is. Thank you, Daan, for such a one-of-a-kind place to stay!

My favorite place in the world

We have been to Congo-Bongo several times. Each time better than the last!
Being there is to forget the outside world and truly get back to the basics and what is really important in life. Walk the almost private beach and you will feel rejuvenated.
The staff is so helpful and if you want to find activities they will line them up for you.
The Dream House is just one of 6 beautiful houses that you can rent on the private property, The walk to the beach is through a jungle of beautiful flowers and plants.
My advice is to definitely go!
