    Additional Location Information

Afro-caribbean, indigenous and costa rican cultures perfectly blend in this magic place.
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, a small fishing town, still resists progress and hardly mantains its origins.
It is located on the South Road from Limon (important industrial and cruise ship Port), to Manzanillo, bordering upon Panama, just 210 km far from S.Jose City.
Sourrounded by lush vegetation and wildlife (jungle), with its marveillous unspoiled palm beaches, Puerto Viejo is situated between two National Parks: Cahuita and Gandoca/Manzanillo.
Have you ever visited a place so amazing, enchanting, fascinating and alive that the feeling and the memory of that particular journey never leave you wherever you are? That's the case of this tropical jewel experience.

      Perfect Stay for Puerto Viejo

Left on 03/23/2013 for a stay in March 2013

I loved this place! After traveling through Costa Rican jungles, sleeping in glorified tents and combating bugs...this place offered the ideal refuge for our last couple nights in Costa Rica.

Nadia and antonio are the perfect hosts and make you feel at home immediately. They are so accommodating and considerate. I felt like family the second I stepped on the property. They live about 5 m from the property and so they are there at a moments notice if you need anything.

This property is also in an ideal location. It is just far enough from town that you feel disconnected from the hustle and bustle, and yet close enough that you can get there at a moments notice. We rented bikes (which I highly recommend) so we were able to get into town within 5-10 minutes. The cab ride is a 2 minute cab ride that costs 4 dollars.

The location is also extremely safe. There is a security gate with cameras and the front door is one of the most secure doors I had ever seen.

The beach right by la Perle is the best beach in the area as well.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with this place and I definitely look forward to traveling here again.

      Couldn't ask for better service

Left on 03/11/2013 for a stay in February 2013

We stayed in Puerto Viejo for 8 days. Unfortunately all 3 of us (my husband, my son and I) all came down with a nasty stomach virus for 5 days. Nadia and antonio couldn't have looked after us better. They brought us medicine, helped us with extra washing and gave us advice and help. I don't know how we would have handled being so sick if they hadn't been there! Everyone in Costa Rica was amazingly friendly, but Nadia and antonio went above and beyond to make sure we were looked after! And we saw sloths and an armadillo right outside our gate. My son loved it!

      Traumhaft

Left on 02/13/2013 for a stay in January 2013

Left on 10/05/2012 for a stay in February 2012

      Nice Relaxing Stay

Left on 08/15/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed 3 weeks in one of the bungalows and had a nice, relaxing stay. Even though it rained daily for the first two weeks of our stay, we still had plenty of good weather to do the activities we planned. Here is my review of La Perla Del Caribe
Location: - The property is about 1 mile from town and about 150 yards from the main road. It is a nice quiet area full of jungle sounds, not loud people. Once on the road from the house, it is only a short walk to a great beach. Also near the beach are a couple of restaurants (we enjoyed Tasty Waves and you can find reviews on Trip advisor). Instead of renting a car, we chose to rent bicycles which we were able to use to easily get to town and even ride to Punta Uva.
House Review - The house itself is a small two bedroom, one bathroom unit. There were ceiling fans in each of the rooms, including the kitchen area. The "master" bedroom had an aC unit, however the other bedroom did not. We only used the a/C at night and not on all nights as the rain really kept things cool. For those times we needed the aC, it kept the master bedroom cool but took a while to get the second bedroom cooled off. The kitchen area includes a 3 burner stove, microwave and good sized refrigerator. There is an outdoor BBQ but we did not use it. There are 4 barstools and a very small counter to sit at in the kitchen area. Other than that, the only seating is on the porch where there is a good sized table with chairs. We ended up moving the table inside for more room to sit under a fan. Our house did not have a ceiling fan outside, which would be a good benefit for those hot days. That was the only thing during the 3 weeks that we wish was different.
Hosts - Nadia and antonio are great. Nadia was always available if we needed anything and was able to provide good information on the activities. Our first day, Nadia drove us into town so we could stop by the local store to get supplies. She was also able to point out a few good places to eat (and there are many). It was truly a pleasure to get to know them.
Safety - We did not venture into town after dark, not because we were worried but because we are not the "night life" type of people. Nadia does recommend taking a taxi at night but we stayed "home". The house and area felt very safe. Nadia and antonio keep a close watch on everything and the house is very secure. We never felt uncomfortable riding the bikes around town or even walking to the beach.
Getting There - We landed in San Jose late at night and stayed in town. Nadia recommended a driver that would take us the next day to the property. Our driver picked us up promptly the next morning and we had a very nice drive. Totally better than taking mass transit and worth the $200 for the 4 of us and lots of luggage.
Getting Home - We booked a river rafting tour that picked us up at the house, fed us breakfast and lunch and gave a great tour of the river. After the tour they dropped us off in San Jose at our last night hotel. This is all included in the price of the tour and a great way to save $200.
All and all we had a great time and highly recommend this property.

I stayed here with three other friends for New Years last year and had the best time. We expected Puerto Viejo to be beautiful, which it was, but we didn't expect the level of warmth and hospitality we received from Nadia and antonio, the proprietors of our villa. They gave us to low down on all the good spots in town, Nadia arranged some amazing trips for us, and antonio took us out to dinner our first night. They built these villas themselves and you can tell they care deeply about their maintenance, so expect to find everything in great condition upon your arrival. Being able to spend time with them really helped us understand the beauty of Puerto Viejo and they were a big part of why we enjoyed our trip so much.

Left on 03/25/2012 for a stay in February 2012

Yes, this is the place to stay. We were so happy with our little house. After researching for months on the Internet, we decided to book our stay with Nadia and antonio. The house has 2 bedrooms, both with very comfortable beds, the house was very clean (No Bugs) and we used the air-conditioning at night. The house stays cool in the day without the air on. We enjoyed the private garden every morning with fresh coffee and food we purchased at the nearby grocery store. We did not have a car the whole time we were there. We arrived late our first day. Nadia had coffee and a few items in the refrigerator for us. The next day, Nadia drove us to the grocery store and gave us a short tour of Puerto Viejo. She recommended restaurants, showed us the pharmacy and bank and more. We booked all our tours through Nadia because the tour company came right to our door. We did rent bikes for most of the week. You can easily get to town on a bike or Nadia will call a taxi for you. The beach is a very short walk and we loved being away from the road. We saw sloths, hummingbirds, toucans, monkeys, butterflies and fireflies at night. We had so much fun. The customer service we experienced was amazing. Thank you, Nadia and antonio! You are the best.

Best place to stay in Cockles

Left on 03/11/2012 for a stay in January 2012

We spent the most amazing two months in La Perla del Caribe. From the first moment we arrived we felt home. The villa is so well built by our host antonio that we had no complaints at all during our two months stay. No bugs inside and everything was shining clean. We were staying in the first house and we had really nice, big garden in which we loved to watch wild animals. We had several sloths in our trees, anolis and jesus lizards, toucans, parrots and so on... But the best part in our stay were our hosts Nadia and antonio. They were always close and ready to help when needed and we had so much fun with with them. I cannot imagine that there would be people who are more caring, friendly and fun, we thank you from our hearts and will always remember you!

In Puerto Viejo, if you have read travel forum, you always must consider the safety issues as the thefts are a problem in the area. We felt so safe in our villa; there were safe doors and safety boxes in the villa and Nadia and antonio with a big dog Nano (hugs to Jaco) were living in next door. We were able just to enjoy our holiday and not to worry about thieves. And I also would like to add, that we had no probems of any kind during our stay with thieves or anything, so you really do not need to worry too much. Just stay streetwise as anywhere in the world. We have been travelling around the world and there is no place like Puerto Viejo so never skip it because of some fears. I consider safety also a big advantage to La Perla del Caribe.

Location was perfect. We had all peace we wanted as the villas are really in middle of jungle but still it is only about 300 metres to the beach and groceries as well restaurants and bars are in walking distance. Definately we will be back!

I’m on the way back. I'm so sorry I only spent a week in Puerto Vieja…
This is an incredible place. I traveled solo and I found ‘La Perla del Caribe’ to be the perfect spot. Very safe, private, classy.. and so close to the main beach - 2 minuts walking - Very good location. I chose to rent a bike -$5 a day- and I was used to explore a different beach everyday.
      For the night I enjoyed Coki bar and Tex Mex’s vibe. I preferred to call a cab at night, which is shown to be a very economic solution -$4 to go and $4 to come back- but you can bike into town in 10 minuts if you want. If you’re looking for relaxation, this is your place. I also found some new friends at ‘Om’ yoga retreat and ‘Tasty Waves’ with their tacos&bear.;

I miss you! I can’t wait to return!

Kind and attentive service. Nice hosts. Very clean. No ants at all, no bugs, no mosquitoes inside the house..we found it to be pretty rare in this region. Absolutly nothing bothering us. Amazing. We spent perfect vacations! Air conditioning was not strictly necessary thanks to good insulated roof. We were walking distance to the village, but far enough to enjoy the most private, peaceful, secluted, beautiful setting. Luckly we didn’t choose an accommodation into town –not clean- just for backpackers - and Punta uva Manzanilo are nice places but too far away from services, night life, restaurants. Opposite side from Puerto Viejo, Playa Negra (black beach), is a bit isolated, and the beach is nothing special, I mean, Cocles and Punta uva have the best white sandy pristine beaches.
We had heard wonderful things about this property and now weunderstand why. We’ll definetly make ‘La Perla del Caribe’ a regular vacation destination for us.

Nadia & Antonio made this a home away from home. Very private setting with jungle surroundings, close to the beach. Being a solo traveler I would have preferred to be a bit closer to town as walking alone after dark is not recommended, & it gets dark at 6pm. I loved the covered porch to hang out in the hammock & take a nap, & the hosts were great at arranging tours and taxi's for me. I would definately stay here again!

This beautiful and charming house is perfectly located between the beach and the jungle, two minutes away from both. The house is very well built: it's spacious, it's never too humid or too hot inside (even when the aC isn't on), and there's a delightful patio with hammocks. There's all the comfort one wants: microwave, coffee machine, wifi, washing machine, AC... Nadia and antonio are the best hosts, always helpful and nice. Nadia is happy to provide information about the many activities one could do in the area. She will tell you where the best beaches are, what's the most enjoyable way to go to Cahuita's national park, where the greatest restaurants are, how to go enjoy beautiful waterfalls... And if you like to spot sloths, iguanas, toucans and more, Antonio is your man.
In a few words: La Perla del Caribe is the perfect vacation rental in Puerto Viejo!

La Perla del Caribe-Villas' are just across the street and it was only about a 2 minutes walk from a beautiful stretch of beach. My wife and I stayed at 'La Perla', and were extremely happy with it. Kids enjoyed a lot wildlife viewing from the porch and the animal rescue center, and we did too! Ask Nadia to tell you where the center is (just a couple of miles south) Ask her about anything you need, she'll help. Our house was very nice and comfortable and it had a/c, which was a big deal for us. We found 'La Perla' to be a real gem into a jungle setting. We had active howler monkeys next to us and heard them early morning and late afternoon. We saw some iguanas, blue butterflies, several sloths and one was about 5 feet above us.

Nadia and her husband will take great care of you for your stay in Playa Cocles/Puerto Viejo. I was there for a full 30 days in January 2011 and everything worked out fine. I am a surfer so I enjoyed the close proximity to Playa Cocles. She lent me her snorkel mask and also a machete for popping open coconuts and hiking in the jungle. They have 2 dogs but they are well behaved (this is rare for Costa Rica and the USa for that matter). The little dog is very frisky and likes to chase rocks. The big dog is more stoic but is a watch dog and is serious by disposition. The casa is very secure and spartan...also very clean I might add. The internet connection was very reliable and Nadia was always helping me find things to do when the surf was flat. They gave me a bunch of fresh bananas one day straight from the yard and they had me over for espresso a couple of times on their porch. This is a solid 5 of 5 star no frills rating and the price is also very reasonable for a stand alone vacation home.

      Absolutely Beautiful

Left on 03/19/2011 for a stay in February 2011

Nadia and antonio are two of the most wonderful people you are ever going to meet, and their vacation rental is a tropical gem. It is very clean, surrounded by flowers (just like in the pictures) are fairly isolated. The beach is just a quick walk across the "main road" and the town itself is about a 3/4 mile walk. For people who have never been to Puerto Viejo and were expecting a big resort strip like Cancun, you couldn't be more wrong. Puerto Viejo is a sleepy 2 block patchwork of small stores and bars where you can hear every language imaginable. An amazing array of international ex-pats live in the area and almost everybody speaks english. The local people could not be any nicer or friendlier. Renting a bike is the best way to get around since the "roads" are completely flat, but more on that later.

Some items of note; even though it doesn't look far on a map, a drive to PV can take 5-6 hours from the airport, and all on barely 2 lane highways and following huge convoys of huge trucks. Driving there wasn't a pleasant experience, even less so when it gets dark at 6 pm and your on an unpaved (and very rocky) road with no lights and lots of people, bikes, wildlife, etc, wandering around. 4 WD are encouraged just so you can make it through the potholes.

But when you do get there...heaven. Laid back, kinda 60s surf town throwback heaven. I'm definitely going back, though this time I'm taking a bus. :-)

Thanks Nadia and antonio! I still owe you a snorkel and mask!

      Amazing Experience

My family stayed at one of Nadia's homes two weeks ago. I cheked the place out ahead of time to make sure everything was in order and I was instantly greeted by Nadia and antonio, They are the sweetest Italian couple and I learned that the homes were built by antonio from scratch.
The home was very tidy and she even went to the trouble of stocking the fridge with some food items. I loved the Italian villa style architecture and the house was very secure. There was a safe in the kitchen and the air conditioning worked very well. My sister told me there wasn't even one mosquito able to enter the place during their entire stay (a total of 7 days).
The surroundings were very pretty and natural looking and the beach was a short stroll away.
If you're looking for a fancy hotel with refined surroundings and a pina colada at the beach this may not be for you (Puerto Viejo in general). If you're in to natural surroundings, wildlife, activities and a friendly surfing community I recommend coming this area. I doubly recommend obtaining one of Nadia's wonderful homes.
Thanks for the wonderful times and memories guys.
      Ciao!

at La Perla del Caribe. Nadia puts most big city concierges to shame and antonio is warm and welcoming. Both see to it that you have a great vacation in Costa Rica. The house itself, while small, is near perfect- everything works, including the aC and the kitchen. Screens and quality construction keep out the bugs very effectively- a real plus in Costa Rica. And there is plenty of water pressure.

The beach is a short walk away through the edge of the jungle- we even saw tree frogs on one of our strolls (poisonous- don't touch!). Sounds of howler monkeys and birds form a wonderful backdrop, and there are few more pleasant ways to spend an afternoon than lying in a hammock, reading, watching the birds, and just looking out over the lovely flowers and vegetation.

But our hosts were the best thing about La Perla. Both Nadia and antonio are warm folks who know a lot about the area and its various indigenous animals. We shared pleasant conversations and espresso with them and had a thoroughly good time- we feel like we made new friends in Costa Rica.

      Surprising!

Left on 01/08/2010 for a stay in November 2009

New and charming, the house was fantastic! Absolutly surprising to find here a luxury lodge
(and at the same price of the other houses!) with a cool interior design, ceiling fans installed in every room, air conditioning, marvelous comfortable beds, free wi-fi...and no mosquitoes, bats and spiders inside the house! That's what we found last year!
We even had our hammocks to relax, BBQ to cook lobsters, private porch..great setting! I mean, we missed anything about the caribbean houses. We had much more.
And they also welcome us with fruit juice, bananas, coffee...as much as they greeted us with a home made cake, I mean..
At La Perla, we found both tranquility and adventure, through excursions into the jungle and lagoon, and Panama's islands. Suggesting Canopy tour for the braves.
      Recommendable 100%!

      Cuantas fotos maravillosas hemos tomado!!
      Asta luego, Costa Rica!!!!

Pura Vida! Taste the Good life!

Left on 11/06/2009 for a stay in October 2009

We enjoyed a slice of paradice! Very clean, comfortable, great patio and view. We loved everything about the beautiful villa. We met some people who didn't feel good in their accomodation, and when they came to visit us they where very surprised and said it was the first'real'house they saw. We just relaxed on unspoiled, tropical beaches and on the hammocks once at home. We had some adventure-excursions and we really had fun, thanks to the owners, who have been very helpful and friendly.
      We can't wait to return!
      Don't miss Costa Rica!!
