Wave Watchers Retreat was an absolutely wonderful place to relax. If I could, I'd make this my own beach house. The view was fantastic and we loved the French Doors opening off of our room. Falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean was perfect. The cottage itself was great. With the kitchen, we were able to make up a tray of cheese and meat to enjoy on the deck with a glass of wine. We only wished we could have stayed here more than one night. Even the garden around the cottage was nice to walk through. It had everything we needed and way more. Perfect!

The location and quality of the accommodations are superb.
The bedrooms and baths are quite comfortable and modern with lots
of storage space and nice big shower in the master. The ocean views from both bedrooms are fabulous. Nice kitchen with lots of equipment to stay home and cook and dine on the deck. Washer, dryer and internet--we got clean clothes and caught up on e-mail. The home was equipped with everything we needed--except our groceries, which we were advised to bring. We loved the quiet, having a glass of wine while sitting in the garden and the ocean view. A calm and peaceful place to relax, but close to Pancake Rocks and other trails to explore.

We arrived at the cottage and were greeted with a fine New Zealand wine that was wonderful after our two hour drive along the spectacular west coast along the Tasman Sea.
The cottage has a spectacular view of the sea and is right on the beach so you can walk along the beach with ease for miles.
The rooms all have a view of the sea and open to spacious decks. We loved having breakfast and dinner outside on the picnic tables where we could see the waves and shoreline. The cottage is nicely decorated and very comfortable. The location is close to many activities such as hiking, shopping, art, horseback riding and the famous Pancake Rocks.
The sunsets and moon rises are truly outstanding. We have traveled a lot and found this spot to be one of the most memorable and visually inspiring.
We would highly recommend the Wave Watcher's Retreat and we will return to this amazing and peaceful cottage in the future. -

Finding the cottage and the key were both made easy with excellent instructions. The washer and dryer were much appreciated and seemed to work though the note about the dryer dial was somewhat obscure so it had to be checked frequently. View of the beach and sea delightful. Having internet service and wifi a big plus. Kitchen appliances fine, glassware, etc. more than adequate. Location near Pancake Rocks, Truman Walk, and the river excellent. A peaceful retreat with plenty to do nearby if you so desire.

Wave Watchers is perfectly located right on the shore...paroramic views and beautiful sunsets. Very relaxing! You can walk to the Pancake Rocks which are fantastic. You can also walk to the Pub which is great. We walked to the river and rented kayaks for a wonderful paddle up the river; we also walked to the Truman Track. There is something for everyone.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Wave Watchers Retreat. It's a quaint, well-appointed cottage right on the beach. We enjoyed sitting on the back deck watching the waves crash. We were greeted with a bottle of New Zealand wine, courtesy of Michael, the owner. The kitchen isn't large and doesn't have the nicest, newest appliances, but it had everything we needed. The cottage is well-decorated and we felt as if we were staying in someone's home, as opposed to a stale hotel. Everything is well kept and clean. Our only complaint was that the bed in the master bedroom was quite firm, but that could just be personal preference for a softer mattress. I would highly recommend the Wave Watchers Retreat and we will definitely stay there again if we ever find ourselves in the area in the future.

This place puts you in another world both physically and mentally. After our first visit we didnt want to leave and so returned for a longer visit. This home is just perfect the way it is. The balance of quality, that still allows you to cook or BBQ or eat out locally and not be afraid to use the facilities and yet feel pampered and endulged is just right. The view is truly mesmerising and if you are lucky enough to experience a storm while here, it is an awsome experience, with the waves and towering cliffs so close you feel like you are the only people in the world. Perfect when you are trying to escape the world as I prefer to do regularly. Please know this is truly the best place to stay while here and I have tried many. This is it!!!

The owner, Mike McClelland, hasn't missed a thing here -- and made some wonderful reservations for us for the rest of our trip. The photos are great, but don't do justice to the sheer beauty and tranquility of the location. Traveling with two friends and my husband, we cooked in and found the kitchen very well appointed -- but, then, the entire cottage was. The addition of the computer/internet was a great surprise -- a very thoughtful touch, even though we mostly stayed "out of touch"! If you're going, stay longer than 2 nights -- you won't regret it. We absolutely loved it!

We arrived at Wave Watchers after receiving perfect driving instructions. The house is located well off the main road thru Punakaiki and is in a very attractive small neighborhood. The Tasman Sea is your front yard literally. The property is beautifully landscaped and kept the same way. The house is charming, cozy and intimate and very well maintained. The bed in the master bedroom is as comfortable as one could ever wish for and the modern bath compltely up to date. The views to the garden, the ocean and the sunsets are spectacular. The house is very well equipped in terms of kitchen and living room furnishings and Skytv got us uptodate news. The music cd choices are the best we have ever enjoyed and the availability of internet with wifi as well as washing machine and dryer were greatly appreciated. We cooked for ourselves and used the outdoor table and the kitchen table to take full advantage of the views. The beach is beautiful and sandy and only 50 or 60 feet in front of the house. Great for walking. Pancake Rocks is a very short drive as is the visitors center. The sounds of the Tasman Sea breaking on the beach and Oscar Peterson's great music are still with us weeks after leaving. A simply wonderful place in which to rest up and relax in after 10 days of great trout fishing or whatever! We drove down the entire west coast from here which is a spectacular drive. What a trip. Our 6th to New Zealand and the best yet. We liked the fact that we were in charge of ourselves but the Owners left very clear instructions for us as to how to reach the manager of the property nearby. No service needed. Thank you for your attention to detail with this property.

Wave Watchers is an elegant, comfortable, clean, cottage on the West side of New Zealand at Punakaiki. It sits right on the Tasman Sea. There is a beautiful landscaped yard, BBQ available for use and two great bedrooms each with its own bath. There is a living room, kitchen, laundry room with washer and dryer that you can use which also has a half bathroom. Great location between Westport and Greymouth (If you are going to cook, shop before you arrive.) Don't miss Pancake rocks, and the Pororari River Track that is within walking distance. Location also provides great access to Underworld Cave Rafting (which includes lots of glow worms to see) in Charleston.

Wave Watchers retreat was a perfect facility to relax and unwind. The location is stunning with uninterupted views of the ocean only metres from the front door. The cottage was very well appointed and had all the little extra touches that made you feel welcome, there was nothing we needed extra to enjoy our stay. Very private location, lovely garden, made you want to sit out on the deck and take in the view. Plenty of activities to do in Punakaiki within a short walk or drive from the cottage. The sunsets, the rolling surf the sea breeze will be remembered for a long time. Very professional operation.

We had 2 wonderful nights (2 couples) in this very cute cottage. There is a dirt access road in front of the house which is hardly used. You can lie in bed and look out to sea from both bedrooms which is lovely. The cottage has everything you need including a great outside table set in beautiful gardens. A short walk to the Tavern which has very ordinary pub style food. I would suggest you self cater. We did the River Walk and visited Pancake Rocks which are amazing. Two nights here is just right. We did have trouble opening the key box. It has become hard to open due to the sea salt.

My husband and I really enjoyed our 2 nights at Wavewatchers. The setting is beautiful. The views from the cottage are amazing. A wonderful place to relax, read a book, and enjoy a glass of wine. The downside is that the cottage is an hour drive to the nearest grocery store and there are very few options (maybe 2) for eating out. Also, the cottage felt a little dated, old and musty. Little things I noticed were dusty blinds and dead bugs on the floors near the windows. Perhaps just a more thorough cleaning is necessary. Overall, we loved our stay and had a fabulous, relaxing time.

We loved Wave Watcher's! It was such an amazing surprise when we arrived to see the views from each bedroom! It felt like we had the most exclusive resort available - and all to ourselves!
The kitchen was great, and the supplies in the fridge and seasonings left there were perfect.
The only problem was one you knew about - the dryer wasn't working well, (Heated towel racks solved that!)and the shower drain in the farthest bedroom was sluggish.
These problems did nothing to dampen our enjoyment.
Having laundry machines of any kind was such a blessing!
We enjoyed two of the most spectacular sunsets we have ever seen the two nights of our stay there.
We loved Arthur's pass from our last trip, and Punakaiki was not too far to use as a base to travel over Arthur's pass for the day. It was an easy day trip.

Wave Watchers Retreat had an excellent view and decent accomidations. There was a problem with the dryer which took forever to dry clothes(needs to be replaced), the water supply was contaminated according to the sign on the table which was a bummer, and we ran out of coffee the first day which was not replaced. We were not even sure that taking a shower was safe. The house could stand more attention from the caretaker, at least a daily check on any notes from guests (ie, ran out of coffee).

Four of us loved our break in activities and touring by staying at Wave Watchers Retreat or two nights. We could have stayed much longer. Although the rooms were small, we incorporated the outside gardens and decks into our living area. Only a small lane outside the picket fence separated us from the shoreline of big rocks which provided a place to read in the afternoon and a place to sit with a glass of New Zealand wine to watch the amazing kaleidoscope of brilliant sunsets while the waves crashed beneath us. It was an easy walk down to the beach. We were forewarned to buy groceries before we arrived, so we enjoyed preparing food in the well-appointed kitchen and grilling outside. We would suggest a place to hang clothes in the smaller bedroom and easier access to the garage where the lounge chairs are stored but that was minor compared to the beauty, comfort and coziness of the cottage and fabulous view.

I've stayed at Wave Watchers Retreat twice now and will make it a definite destination whenever I visit New Zealand.
It's a lovely place to stay and chill out for a couple of days. The beach can have an ethereal feel to it in some lights, the sunsets are always worth waiting for. if you're lucky you'll see dolphins in the sea too. The cottage itself is homely, comfortable, well equipped and has a beautiful garden.
The cottage was very clean and tidy and feels as though you're staying at a friends house rather than a commercial let.
Both bedrooms look out onto the sea and so there is plenty of time to just watch the waves.
I love it and can't wait to get back there!

For a couple from Colorado making our first visit to New Zealand, we found Wave Watchers Retreat in Punakaiki to be wonderfully intoxicating. We were provided top-flight accommodations for two days and two nights and wish we could have stayed at this beautiful oceanfront hideaway for another week. It doesn't do Wave Watchers retreat justice to say that it provided us with all the comforts of home, but the barbeque grill on the front porch, well-stocked kitchen, and comfortable living room that included a large color television and Internet access made it feel that way. Of course, most homes don't come with dazzling sunsets over the Pacific Ocean that just happens to be crashing just a few dozen feet away from Wave Watchers Retreat. We loved it and would like to find something uncharitable to say about it, but we can't.

The cottage was charming, the grounds lovely, the view of the ocean spectacular! Hopefully one of the issues we had while there has been resolved by now....the clothes drier was on its last leg and took six hours to dry one load of clothes. We planned our laundering around a location with a washer and drier so washed lots and dried little--forcing us to use a nearby hotel's drier early in the morning and we were still late checking out. Warning about the sandflies would have been helpful also with repellant on hand for guest use. We itched for weeks afterwards!Otherwise it was fantastic!

Left on 01/29/2010 for a stay in December 2009
We spent a few nights at the Wave Watchers Retreat, including New Year's Eve
2009. The weather was clear, and stormy, and foggy, and just about every
other possibility. This made for spectacular wave watching, which is the whole
point of being on the Tasman Sea in such a beautiful setting. The cottage is
private, and yet has all the amenities of a vacation getaway. One of the most
appreciated features is the unlimited internet access, which was especially fun
since we could be the first (by a day ahead) to wish our friends "back in the
states" Happy New Year. We brought in Champagne and good food and at
midnight, the skies had cleared and we welcomed in the new decade in one of
the most naturally stunning environments we'd ever visited. Our hope is to do
this again at some point. The natural wonders don't stop at the sea, either.
You can easily walk to the Punakaiki Rocks and spend time on some of the
more interesting river trails in the area. If you have the chance, don't miss a
few days at Wave Watchers Cottage. -

It was so cozy and comfortable, nicely decorated, and with all the amenities you could want. I'd especially recommend that you enjoy some wine and cheese on the deck at sunset. The views are glorious and if you can't find relaxation in that setting, there may be no hope for you. The only disappointment: we used the washer and dryer, and the dryer took ridiculously long to get our clothes dry. But overall, we would highly recommend Wave Watchers Retreat, and we'll stay there again the next time we're in the area.

The sunsets alone are enough to make this a extrordinary experience. The house has everything you need, cable, internet, yet is near many wilderness spots without equal.

a wonderful stay in a wonderful home from which I got a lot of ideas for our house in Germany. We enjoyed the possibility to make a lot of short trips.
We plan to go to Australia this Christmas time - do you have something like Wave Watchers there? -

Lake Tahoe NevadaThe best place we stayed in our stay in New Zealand
Left on 07/21/2009 for a stay in November 2008
We are from Lake Tahoe Nevada. Spent nine days in NZ. The Wave Watcher Retreat surpassed even the most highly rated fishing lodge we stayed in. It really felt like home, and enjoyed having the cooking facilities available. The location was perfect and we felt like we were the only ones on the beach. Hope to return some day and spend more time at the retreat. Thank you. Nancy Ziegler

Central Otago, New ZealandWave Watchers is an absolute delight.
Left on 07/19/2009 for a stay in June 2009
Overlooking the wonderful windswept beach at Punakaiki on the West Coast of the South Island, Wave Watchers Retreat provided us with a most relaxing stop-over. We were lulled to sleep at night and awoke in the morning to the soothing sounds of the sea. And there is nothing like a cup of tea in bed watching the vaste expanse of ocean out front, almost at the doorstep. Very clean, comfortable and well appointed (we loved being able to cook our own meals), Wave Watchers was a perfect place from which to explore this beautiful region. We would highly recommend staying at least two nights.

This enchanting cottage is tucked away among the trees and a lovely garden
with an unobstructed view of the ocean from every room. Everything we
needed was provided including a bird who serenaded us as we sipped on wine
and watched the light fade in the evening. A cozy fire and soft music topped
off our evening prior to retiring for the night. This is a jewel to be discovered
by those who want privacy and appreciate first class accommodations with a
touch of home.
The surrounding area has much to explore and we wish we could have stayed
longer. -

Left on 07/16/2009 for a stay in March 2009
This is a great house in a magnificent location right on the beach with an unobstructed view of the ocean. One of the bedrooms has walls of windows on two sides which have great views of the water when the curtains are open. This spot on the beach has some of the most fabulous sunsets we have ever seen. Even though there was a campground and a small hotel nearby it was very quiet and private. The small town within walking distance has a nice restaurant and the house is only minutes from the Punakaiki Rock formations which are great to see. The house is very neat and clean and has everything you could ask for-- two very nice bedrooms with their own baths, a great kitchen and a wraparound deck with nice chairs for lounging in the sun. You definitely do not want to miss staying at the Wave Watchers Retreat on your trip to the South Island of New Zealand!

Delightful cottage right on the ocean with two bedrooms and baths, both with ocean views. We left the windows open all night to listen to the surf. Sunsets over the ocean are beautiful.

We loved Wave Watchers. It is really right on the beach and has a beautiful little garden and patio where we had our meals. We just loved the sunsets there. We went horseback riding on the beach from a nearby stable and took some walks to see more of the pancake rocks. It is a charming place and we really enjoyed it.

This cottage had it all. Direct access to the beach, a beautifully decorated
space that managed to feel cozy at the same time and within short driving
distance to great tourist spots. There is even a funky restaurant/bar right up
the street. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our brief time at this little
piece of paradise. Our only regret is our visit was too short.

The cottage is right on the beach. Each bedroom is extremely comfortable. It has all the amenities you could want.
You can sit on the porch and BBQ your dinner while you watch the waves and the sunset.
Our biggest regret was staying only one night - we should have made it a destination stop! -

Left on 07/13/2009 for a stay in November 2008
We stopped at Wave Watcher's cottage during our drive up the West Coast. Storms had been pounding the coast for several days, and we were weary of the drive. The cottage was a great refuge from driving in the blowing rain. The cottage had all the comforts of home, plus we could watch huge waves break from our window. When we had to leave the next morning, we were really wishing that we could stay another night. The cottage was very attractive, very comfortable. We cooked a light dinner for ourselves with food bought nearby. We plan to stay there again on our next visit. Highly recommended!

Laguna Beach, CaliforniaA retreat....really
Left on 07/13/2009 for a stay in November 2008
This is one of the most relaxing and refreshing places where we have stayed. The house felt like a home...well equipped (internet, new beds, new bath, BBQ etc) with a very casual, comfortable feel. We liked being able to walk along the beach or to the pub and have some more sites and restaurants a short drive away. We visited the Pancake Rocks several times, each with a different photo opportunity.
What we especially liked was staying put and watching the waves and the changing spring time weather over the water. Totally relaxing.
The west coast of New Zealand was also a real treat. While we have visited other places in NZ and think the country is very scenic, the west coast is especially dramatic in its rugged and wild way. The sparse population and attractions give a wonderful sense of isolation and...retreat!
We had been advised to do the marketing on our drive and we bought dinner for one night. We didn't starve as there are pubs and restaurants near by, but next time we would have bought more dinners as it was so nice to stay in.
Staff was great and very accessible.

The home is well-equipped and has spacious bedrooms. It is very close to the beach and a road. There is no road noise, but lots of people coming to and fro. Wave Watchers is great for watching the waves and also for people watching. On the flip side, if you don't want to be watched, pull the blinds...

For a self service facility it was very easily accessed, and the direction for entry were quite easy. The home is layed out perfectly for two couples and very conveniently located for beach walks and the outdoor patio are a wonderful way to spend a premeal with bit of wine and cheese looking out over the ocean. We did appreciate this as we are from a beach town on the West Coast and felt very much at home. The overall location was wonderful for a couple of days of sightseeing and other sites close by. We did not really have any least experiences to speak of. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Melbourne, AustraliaOMG ... how lucky were we!!!!
Left on 07/09/2009 for a stay in July 2007
We arrived in Punakaiki because of a stuffed up booking and found Wave Watchers purely on chance. We couldn't believe our luck and called immediately. The sea, the views, the house, the cold (we love winter). It was the most amazing place and we were just so sad that we couldn't stay longer due to other commitments. We'd love to come back and visit during Autumn and Summer even. The west coast is the most stunning part of the south island. Its remote and a bit wild but that is its beauty. As for Wave Watchers, you couldn't fault the accommodation and the amount of photos we took proves that. And since then they have added a 2nd ensuite bathroom. Seriously, if you are ever in NZ, the south island and the west coast in particular, do yourself a favour and check out Wave Watchers, you won't be disappointed.

I recently stayed at Wave Watchers Retreat (WWR) with my father and three month old son. WWR is as close to a perfect NZ coastal experience as we have found. Among the many highlights of our comfortable stay were: 1) The location! The million dollar view cannot be overstated. Located on the beach with views up and down the coast, WWR offered us the most spectacular sunsets we have ever seen. The house is also around the corner from the charming and not to be missed Punakaiki Tavern. 2) The amenities. The house has two comfortable bedrooms with nice, clean ensuite bathrooms. Both bedrooms look out on the crashing waves. My son has never slept better! There is also a cozy living room with satellite tv, a stereo and a computer with internet access. 3) The deck. Our favorite time of day was sunset. We would open a bottle of wine, grill burgers or chicken on the gas BBQ, play music, and recline on the deck. In a word: fabulous. 4) The kitchen and washer/dryer. After a few hotels and B&B's it was wonderful to have a full kitchen and laundry room all to ourselves. The well stocked kitchen had everything we needed. WWR is a wonderful option if you are driving down the West Coast of NZ's South Island. We loved it.
