Description from the owner

Pépoulie is a typical farmhouse of South West France, built before the French Revolution, with 19th century additions. Sensitively restored, with all modern facilities, including a 12 x 5 metre salt water swimming pool.

It is a kilometre north of the village of Puylaurens between Toulouse and Castres, and enjoys over 2100 hours of sunshine a year (cf Paris with around 1600 hours per year).

It consists of the house itself (where we live), stables converted into the gĂźte for our guests, and a workshop. Situated on the crest of a hill, in the middle of a hectare of land (around two and a half acres), it has panoramic views o...Read more

Left on 10/28/2012 for a stay in August 2012

This is a beautiful house with truly stunning views and a lovely garden. We enjoyed every minute of our week there. The house is well-appointed, clean and comfortable and the pool was a pleasure to use, with inflatables for the children and loungers for the adults. Our two children also appreciated the well stocked toy box. There was plenty of information about things to do in the area and we enjoyed several visits to amazingly beautiful ancient villages. We can also recommend the local restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious meal and the unbelievable view.

Check in was stress free and we found everything we needed for a comfortable holiday.

8 of us and one baby stayed at Pepoulie for one week at the end of august. We were all incredibly impressed with every aspect of the accommodation and are already planning on going back!
The house is clean, tidy and beautifully done up with minimalistic décor (nothing worse than too much fuss)! The bedrooms are spacious and all come with an electric fan which, due to the 40 degreee heat, came in very useful!
The house came with swimming towels and lots of spare bedding if needed.

The setting is tranquil and absolutely breathtakingly beautiful with gorgeous views and incredible sunsets. The pool was fantastic and we spent many happy hours lounging around on the wooden sun loungers and playing with the toys supplied in the outdoor storage unit.

The hosts were very welcoming and helped us out whenever we needed it - they made trips to the supermarket for us which meant we arrived to fresh food and also helped us out with directions when we needed. They were friendly and couldn't do enough to make us feel at home.

In the lead up to the stay Roger was fantastic - he helped us book a taxi for a wedding we were going to and sent us regular updates and photos of the beautiful gardens.

To summarise, an absolutely wonderful stay! We were all gutted to be leaving and can't wait to return! Thank you!

We were made to feel very welcome, and Roger did his utmost to make us feel at home.

The location was perfect to enjoy some late summer sun in quiet countryside with magnificent views. The gite is well stocked with things to do - bikes, pool toys for the children, board games, books etc.

We spent a week at Pepoulie this summer. A relaxing week in a most beautiful environment perfect for two families with small children. We had great expectations for our trip and it turned out to be even better. Easy to get there, nice pool, excellent service from the owner of the house and a nice and cool temperature in the house in spite of hot weather. The house has all you need to live a good life when you travel with children, or without. We have already decided to come back within a couple of years and can of course recommend all of you to do the same.

      We didn't want to leave!

Left on 12/18/2011 for a stay in October 2011

As I write this it’s snowing – so hard to believe that just a few short weeks ago we were in Pepoulie, enjoying a sunny warm October.

As we were travelling from Scotland, we thought it would be sensible to book an evening meal with Roger on that first night. It was a great idea! The food was local, well prepared and tasted delicious, washed down with an excellent Gaillac wine. Just the way a relaxing holiday should start.

The next day the sun came out with a vengeance and Roger showed us how to uncover the pool – in October! We managed to use it a few times, but although the sun was very warm, it was not quite enough to heat the pool sufficiently for more regular use. However, it was a bonus we hadn’t expected, and it was lovely to laze round it on sunbeds, reading and enjoying a glass (or two) of wine.

Pepoulie is a most attractive house, extremely old on the outside but with all the modern requirements on the inside. As our host says on his website, “very Ikea”! This suited our needs – it’s a big house, with lots of space, which meant that, when our family came to visit, there was plenty of room for us all. Roger has confirmed he’s putting another shower and toilet in, and that would make it perfect! The surrounding views are amazing, and when the sun rises in the morning the big table at the back of the house is the ideal place to eat breakfast.

The garden grounds came into their own when our grandchildren arrived. They flew kites, played football, played pirates in the tree-house, used the swings and slide and ran madly around, which made sure they were ready for bed on time!

This is a lovely part of France, with much to see and do, and it was was very hard to leave. We intend to repeat our visit as soon as we can.

Pepoulie is in a lovely part of Southern France on a hill near the village of Puylaurens, 50km from Toulouse. We had a lovely week here in early Sept. The weather was variable which allowed us to enjoy long walks, visitig local towns and sunbathing by the pool. The gite is well-equipped, with minimalist Ikea style. Roger, the owner, is constantly thinking of ways to improve the facilities. He dealt quickly and effectively with any issues we had. Pepoulie appears on Google maps and directions are easy to obtain from Google.

      A Relaxing place

Left on 08/26/2011 for a stay in June 2011

We stayed four weeks with our 3 year old, and baby of six months. The house and location was well over our expectations. Everything for children was provided for (high chairs, changing station, baby tub, stool, plastic cups/plates etc..) you literally don't have to bring anything with you if you don't want to. The kitchen had all necessary utensils. Living room/kitchen was very big with nice views. Master bedroom was huge with the best views of the village and room for many extra beds if needed. The mattress in the double bed was a bit on the hard side. The other two bedrooms were of good size with space for 2-3 beds and wardrobes. The bathroom was in nice condition with a sink and a shower + changing station for babies. Roger was very accommodating in providing anything that we needed help with. The pool area was great. It's fenced and even had a shower heated by the sun that we enjoyed. The pool itself is in great condition. The views from the house are truly spectacular. Most of the house is a homage to Ikea, so many things that I didn't know they even produced :-). We really preferred this instead of old dusty furniture and antiques. Families with children will love the gardens, as they provide so many things to discover with plants, vegetables and even a tree house with swing to enjoy. The village of Puylaurens is in no way swamped by tourists, so if you are after a true French countryside experience, this is the place for you. We recommend the market on Wednesdays, remarkable for a village of this size. There are three grocery stores and two bakeries, all of good quality (we really liked the bakery in the village). We also recommend Toulouse, a very nice city conveniently 45 minutes from Puylaurens. The towns and markets of Castres and Revel are also very highly recommended. Castres also had the closest big supermarket, Auchan.
You will definitely have a relaxing vacation staying here.

      French charm at its best!

Left on 08/13/2011 for a stay in July 2011

Pepoulie is exactly such a beautiful, charming and wonderful French house many of us have been and are dreaming of. It is located on a hill, with a magnificent view over the beautiful French contryside. It is quiet and picturesque, located with walking distance to the small village of Puylaurens. The house itself has a beautiful exterior, with an delicious salt water pool, whereas the interior is spacious and modern, with all necessary facilities.

The owner Roger Budd is a warm, friendly, and very service minded host, always easy to ask. He was helpful picking us up at the railway station, lent us necessary equipment when needed, provided us with excellent traveling advices, and generously shared his home grown produce with us (to our great excitement!).

Our group included 6 children, between 3 and 15 years old, and with the child friendly atmosphere of Pepoulie they all enjoyed their stay very much. They could run around in the garden, play games, fly the dragon, play in the tree cottage, taste home grown fruits, watch television, listen to music, etc. However, the pool was of course the number one favorite. Besides, "everything" was there, all necessary utencils, as indicated on the Pepoulie webpage.

For part of our stay we were as many as 12 people, and we all fitted well in the spacious house.

Although we honestly would like to keep this treasure as a secret - we cannot but warmly recommend Pepoulie to all fellow travelers. Pepoulie is something very special.

      Christmas in Puylaurens

Left on 08/01/2011 for a stay in December 2010

Over the winter of 2010/11 our family had the privilege of taking some time out of our normal lives and spending 8 weeks in Pepoulie. Roger was extremely helpful and the gite was spacious, clean and comfortable. Our girls, 2 and 4, soon thought of it as ‘their house’ and they still ask about it today. The view of the countryside out the back door was beautiful and the colours of the fields seemed to change with the weather and the time of the day. Although we were there at a time when the rest of France was being battered by atrocious weather, Puylaurens, sitting on top of its hill, was barely affected. We had many sunny days there although it was the heart of winter.

We used Pepoulie as a base for many day trips. From the markets in Revel, to the Christmas markets in Tolouse as well as visits to albi, Carcassonne, Foix and as far as ax-le-Thermes in the Pyrenees – there was plenty to see and do close by. The nearby town of Castres has many shops and facilities, including a very good public swimming pool and a couple of enormous supermarches. We spent a memorable Christmas in Puylaurens, making sure that we had Fois Gras with our roast turkey and enjoying inexpensive but excellent champagne and local wines from Gaillac.

I’m not sure that we will ever have the opportunity again to take time out of our lives and just “be somewhere else”. It was in honesty, quite extraordinary. But if anyone else ever has the opportunity or would simply like to enjoy this lovely part of France, I couldn’t recommend Pepoulie enough.
