My husband and I and our son and his wife spent a week in Quito in March. We started out in this condo but half the city, or so, went down with no water after two nights so we moved to the owner's other condo across town. As such, my review for this one is brief as we spent little time there.
It's on a very steep street. Be prepared to taxi back if you're not one to huff and puff up the street. It's close to the old town area with shops and restaurants. The street had a lot of loud traffic, we didn't open the street side windows due to the noise. The kitchen was fairly adequately stocked, it lacked a few basics, such as a colander and a clean sponge and veggie wash and dish soap but we had just spent a week in a condo in Cuenca that was superbly stocked so perhaps we were spoiled. There were no windows inthe bedroom to open for ventilation. Beds were comfortable, linens and pillows fine.
I might recommend this to family and friends. -

My family stayed at the Balcon de la Cuenca for eight days. Leonor and her family went the extra mile to make sure our stay was delightful. For example, prior to our stay, Leonor was regularly available to answer any questions I had regarding the apartment, transportation, city, etc. Leonor even went out of her way and asked if we wanted groceries since we were arriving late and had a small child. During our stay, Leonor's family was but a phone call away, should we have any questions. Further, there is an extremely friendly and helpful security guard (I believe his name was Paul) who was available to help when needed. Paul hailed cabs for us, recommended places to see and eat as well as places to avoid.
The apartment is located in Old Quito and in walking distance from shops and restaurants. Overall, Balcon de la Cuenca contained all the amenities of home with the charm of Old Quito. We will definitely return to Quito and when we do so would look to rent the apartment again.Response from Leonor Gonzalez - 03/21/2013

We stayed 4 nights in this great apartment within easy walking distance of Old Quito. 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms made it good for the 4 of us. Everythng we needed to make a meal was there, was clean and worked, though the internet was really slow and we couldn't get the TV to work. Our hosts were great and arranged our transfers to and from the airpor for good value.

This was a fabulous place for our family to stay in Old Town Quito. Leonor's parents were there to meet us - we were late arriving and they waited for us - along with her adult daughter who lives a couple blocks away. My daughter was sick when we arrived, and Leonor's mom took care of her; made her tea. The apartment itself is wonderful, fully equipped, and very spacious. It's just a few blocks up the hill from all the attractions of Colonial Quito. The building is very secure, and the guard helped me load the phone (that comes with the apartment) with minutes. We also stayed in the condo near the airport also owned by Leonor which also worked out very well.

Edenton, North CarolinaOur Memorable Stay in El Balcon
Left on 09/14/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Our family considered El Balcon to be "Home" during six memorable weeks we spent in beautiful Quito. The owner, along with her parents, daughter and fiancé, went above and beyond to accommodate us during our entire stay. We were contacted by them numerous times during our stay to ensure that all was well. Their gracious hospitality and many acts of kindness were much appreciated. The apartment's laptop and 2 cell phones were a welcome bonus as they were instrumental in helping us to keep in touch with family back in the States. We found the apartment to be exceptionally clean, spacious, and well-appointed. The 24-hour on-site guard at the gate was quick to offer a hand when arriving with groceries. Because of its ideal central location we were within walking distance of museums, churches and several small corner stores, where we were able to buy groceries and incidentals. Our children loved the short walk to purchase fresh bread every morning. They especially looked forward to an afternoon treat at the ice cream store conveniently located around the corner. An extensive bus system, along with inexpensive taxis, enabled us to travel throughout the city and its surrounding suburbs with ease. We all hope to return to this charming city and reside in this wonderful apartment.

We had a great experience with the hosts of Balcon de la Cuenca.
First off, we took the airport pick-up services and they were very hospitable in giving us tips on how to navigate Quito and some places to buy food and such.
Balcon de la Cuenca is a nicely spacious apartment with a kitchen, 2 bath, and a washer/dryer. The place is very Quito downtown in one of the districts that is historic and authentic with little shops down the street. The place was very clean and neat. And a cool bird-eye view of El Panecillo (a huge madonna statue) which seemed so small. It's literally brick-stone roads and uphill avenues. You are closer to the historic part of Quito there.
We have to give a special thanks to the hosts who were wonderful in guiding us where to go. And when above and beyond to make us feel comfortable.
The only con we have is that this place was more downtown near the historic part and a way ride to the more metropolitan part of Quito.
But so you know - they have two locations. Balcon de La Cuenca for downtown historic and if you want to stay more central in the city - they have another apartment "El Batan".
Bottom line- we enjoyed our trip and the state of the location was good!

Seattle, WashingtonGreat experience at Balcon de la Cuenca
Left on 04/02/2011 for a stay in March 2011
While visiting Ecuador in March 2011, we had the good fortune to stay 5 nights at Balcon de la Cuenca. Located in a nice neighborhood close to the historic center, we were within easy walking distance or short taxi rides to many of the city's top sites. The apartment is spacious, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Neighborhood grocery stores and a local bakery provide everything we needed during our stay. The two cell phones and lap top that are included for no extra charge were handy to have. Leonor, the owner who lives in New York answered many questions for us while planning our trip and helped us arrange for a driver to take us on several day excursions. Her mother, Hilda, serves as the local property manager and was wonderfully helpful while we were in Quito.
Balcon de la Cuenca is a true gem, I would highly recommend it. Not only is it an economical alternative to hotels but it provided us a richer experience by emersing us in a local neighborhood. -

Stayed at the Balcon for a tremendous week while attending my son's college graduation in Quito. My son has lived in Ecuador for five years and remarked that the Balcon is the best value in Quito. The location is right up the fill from the Plaza Grande and around the corner from the Basilica. You can buy your groceries from the tiny stores on the street. The 3 BRs are upstairs and spacious. The living room and kitchen have everything you need to cook if you want to save money. The owner and her mother were great hosts. Why would you pay so much more for so much less at a hotel, hostel, B&B.; When we return to Quito for my son's host sister's wedding, we are staying at the Balcon. D.Cole Santa Cruz, Ca.

I visited Quito in March of 09' for my spring break trip. We arrived at Balcon de
la Cuenca only blocks away from beautiful historic Quito and a gorgeous
basillica. The condo overlooks a cute street and has another outdoor balcony
that shows a great view of homes in quito (beautiful at night!). The service was
very friendly and you always felt safe there. The condo itself is very large,
comfortable, and welcoming! In the week I was there I came to think of this
condo as my home. You can relax, entertain, or just enjoy the night with your
friends and family. If I had the choice to go back I would without question or
doubt stay at the Balcon de la Cuenca again. Great space and great service. -

Chicago, Illinois"Absolutely Breathtaking"
Left on 01/13/2010 for a stay in March 2009
I can say with fortitude that my stay at Balcon de la Cuenca is one that I will
never forget. It is a gorgeous apartment tucked within the heart of the city of
Quito, Ecuador. With hundreds of new things to see and discover, all within
walking distance, it is a perfect place to come home to after a long, hot day
of exploring. It is decorated in soft, neutral colors that provide the perfect
ambiance for a relaxing evening at home. There are four bedrooms and two
bathrooms with a kitchen and living room downstairs. Although the kitchen
is fully equipped and ready to use, you will hardly find yourself eating at
home. When I stepped out onto the balcony just outside of the kitchen, my
stomach dropped. The view down the steep, winding roads of Quito was
absolutely breathtaking. The most unique thing about staying here was that I
was completely consumed by the culture of Quito (this is a feeling I highly
doubt one would experience by staying in a hotel). I loved observing the
people as they went about their daily lives. Taking pictures is a serious
hobby of mine and the images I was able to capture while on this trip are
spectacular. You would be a fool to pass up an opportunity to stay at a place
like this because I can promise you, you won't find anything quite like it
anywhere else in the world...
