A home away from home :)

Left on 05/11/2013 for a stay in April 2013

We just returned from a relaxing stay at Makayla Palms and we are already missing it!
The villas are cosy, spacious and spotless and are just a minute's walk from what many consider to be the best beach on Rarotonga.
The owners Rachel and John are just lovely and are always available to answer any questions you may have.
Definitely highly recommended for a quieter holiday away from the resorts.

      Relaxing Haven

Left on 08/28/2012 for a stay in August 2012

We totally enjoyed our stay at Makayla Palms and were delighted with all aspects of our sun-filled trip. The quiet seclusion, the clean and very pleasant villa set amongst immaculate gardens, the beautiful beach at the end of the path and the personal touches provided by John and Rachel. We appreciated their relaxed and helpful manner and can only concur with other reviewers with regard to this.
The self-catering option is something we prefer and arrived with some frozen vac-packed meat for the barbecue plus favourite cheeses and humus from home. There are good food outlets on the island though and Rachel will point you in the right direction for those.
We also enjoyed eating out and visited Waterline restaurant and The Mooring on the recommendation others. Both these places were fantastic. Waterline for the sunset location and music in the evening, and excellent fish-burger lunch fare at The Mooring.
The Koka Cruise was a great experience and well worthwhile too.
Rarotonga is a wonderful place where you can do as much or as little as you want. We were after the "little" end of the spectrum and this is exactly what we did. Just chilled for most of it. Makayla Palms was spot on for us and we can't recommend it highly enough as a great location when wanting to escape to a warm and sunny destination.
Thank you Rachel and John for creating this relaxing haven and holiday experience. One to which we will surely return.

Left on 08/23/2012 for a stay in August 2012

I recently spent a week at makayla palms with 4 other friends. The villas are just like home away from home, everything you need in a spacious and modern villa, and even included marmite! Seconds away from one of the most pristine beaches on the island and you rarely had to compete with anyone else for towel space. All the water sports equipment was provided and the lagoon was just beautiful. Rachel and john are amazing hosts, so helpful and caring - the baking didn't last long! Would definitely recommend makayla palms for a relaxing enjoyable stay in Rarotonga

We were a group of five ladies travelling to Rarotonga to celebrate our 40th birthdays, and the place was wonderful! Our villa had plenty of room for us, we had wonderful indoor/outdoor living, and the full cooking facilities were very helpful. The villas and the wonderful gardens were a very peaceful and relaxing environment, and with the beach only metres away we had a home away from home + more!. Brilliant stay, fantastic home baking and terrific hosts.

Mikayla Palms rates as a top holiday destination for us. All sea activity gear is provided for snorkeling and kayaking. The studio apartment is meticulously maintained and as new. The faultless hosts John and Rachel are friendly and provide all information needed about the area. If you are looking for a great relaxing holiday destination by the sea and in a warm climate, this is it!

What a fantastic time we had staying at Makayla Palms. Spacious Villa and grounds with easy access to a beautiful area of the beach.
John and Racheal were fantastic hosts, regularly checking we were getting on okay.
There was plenty to do without going too far from our base.
The Lagoon was full of life, great kayaking and snorkeling.
The highliight of our stay had to be Fred and Lovie's Umu. The food was delicious and Fred and Lovie and their beautiful girls were great hosts.

From the warm welcome from John at the airport to the hug when we left - it was a great experience from start to finish - just what we were needing at the time. Rachel's lovely home baking & surpise desserts, Fred & Lovie's cheerful guidance in Cook Island basket weaving & coconut processing all made it an experience we cherished. The clear waters of the lagoon were just minutes away & the township a short scooter ride all made our all too brief stay so much fun. The accommodation was simply superb - plenty of romm and wonderful facilities. We can't wait to come back!

Left on 11/16/2011 for a stay in November 2011

We stayed at a villa at the lovely Makayla Palms just recently. John & Rachel are great hosts who made us very welcome & were always available to advise re restaurants, trips etc. and do bookings. Rachel's home baking was a lovely touch as were the fresh fruit and flowers. The orientation that Rachel does is particularly appreciated for first time visitors to Rarotonga.

The accommodation is modern, spotlessly clean and so close to the best snorkelling beach on the island. Snorkels, masks, reef shoes and kayaks are also provided.

Recommend Kikau Hut for great meals & Koka Lagoon Cruises for best time ever! Do visit the church on Sunday awesome singing. Have a fabulous massage with Inano.

      Felt like home

Left on 11/03/2011 for a stay in August 2011

We loved our stay at Maykala Palms. Although we had wondered whether we would be disappointed at not having a water view, the benefits of Makayla Palms soon outweighed this. Our first few nights were quite windy and yet we BBQ on our protected verandah surrounded by beautiful gardens and the atsmophere was wonderful. I don't think this would have been possible on the waterfront. We actually spent a lot more nights at home than we expected because of the surroundings. Being only a minute to the water is was easy to take a couple of comfy chairs down to the beach and sit under the palms and have a drink in the afternoon. The kayaks and snorkelling equipment were in tip top shape and a great variety which was important to us. Rachel and John were delightful and helpful but certainly not intrusive.
Ps We stayed in a studio which was really as big as a 1 bedroom but we did look in the 2 bedroom apartment and it looked a lot bigger to me than it appears on the website.

Our villa was fantastic - every detail just right and oh so comfortable bed. Just 20 metres or so from a pristine beach ready for swimming, snorkling or just taking in the views. Not to mention the garden setting - marvellous. No noise at night was a winner for us too. Two good restaurants just a stroll away. Take it from us, Rachel and John are the best of hosts. We stayed 12 nights and could have stayed a month. So Kia Orana Rachel and John - look forward to visiting again.

Writing this review as I wait on a delayed flight back to New Zeland after a great stay (8 sleeps ). I can only support other guests reviews and would recommend to others.
easy to find...exit airport turn Left and around the island for 15km. Blue sign post on the right hand side of the road.
insect screens on the doors/windows so no concerns.
We had great weather so used the BBQ for meals and ate outside under the cover off the large roof overhang...plenty of room... Table and chairs on the verandah.

Home baking, wine and drinks and nibbles with other guests and a friendly chat adds to a great stay.

Hosts John and Rachel working hard to maintain the property to an excellent standard. A credit to them and wish them well in business.

and fins/masks although we had our own .

easy access to the beach for a snorkel and sea the fish ( even seen a turtle ). Nice clean quiet beach.

      Bliss again

Left on 06/07/2011 for a stay in May 2011

This was our second trip staying at the wonderful Makayla Palms. Titikaveka is the best part of the Rarotonga Island and has wonderful beaches for swimming. Some of our group are not confident swimmers, but they can see the lovely fish while standing knee deep in water. The canoes available were given a good workout and the bay inside the reef is safe for 'newbies'. We saw 'flying fish' and large vivid blue fish which enjoyed 'playing' on the top of the rocks when the tide went out. The clockwise and anticlockwise bus work really well, especially if you purchase the concession ticket. This gives a trip at $2.50 instead of $4.00. Not advertised but advised to us by our hosts. Please take the opportunity to share John and Rachel and their hospitality plus take them up on an appointment for a massage. We will return and join John on the bowling green

Fabulous service. Rachel was there to meet us at the airport at 1.30am and return us to the airport at the end of our holiday around the same, crazy departure time but really appreciated the personal touch. Accommodation was fabulous, very clean and had everything you could possibly need and so close to the gorgeous lagoon. Fresh fruit abundant and lovely filtered water on tap at Villa. Although deck chairs were supplied for the beach, a sun lounge would be more comfortable to while away the hours! We'll definitely return as long as Rachel and John are there as they made our stay so informative, funny and enjoyable. Would recommend Makayla Palms to everyone as the location is just perfect, although don't take my word for it - book now!

The Makayla Palms unit we stayed in was really well equipped and comfortable. It had absolutely everything you could need. It is not right on the beach but it is only a 50 yard walk through the garden to get to the most beautiful beach on Rarotonga. Our hosts, Rachel and John were really helpful with amazing attention to detail without feeling intrusive. Rachel brought home made biscuits for us and her breakfast was beautifully presented in island style - and delicious! We really enjoyed being able to buy local fruit and vegetables right over the road - and being wakened by the most amazing singing on Sunday morning from the church across the road was heavenly!

Thank you Rachel and John for welcoming us to Makayla. It was my first time in Rarotonga and we decided to stay at Makayla after a recommendation - we were not disappointed. The units were beautifully appointed, very clean and many thoughtful things left for the convenience of your guests eg rain coats, umbrella, little kitchen provisions, bowl of fruit etc - the gardens are beautiful and it was wonderful to be able to sample the best passion fruit I have ever seen or tasted - and just outside our front door. Whilst it is not right on the water front it is only steps away and Rachel's baking was another very thoughtful and delicious addition to what was a fabulous holiday. The hospitality was very friendly, helpful and we left feeling like old friends!! The sea kayaks and snorkelling gear only added to our fun. Thank you John and Rachel.
Ps Being the self appointed Queen of G&T;'s I would like to suggest bigger wine glasses as these combined with large ice cubes, lots of your gorgeous limes/lemons help make a sensational G&T;!!! Thank you Rachel and John - we would recommend Makayla to any one of our friends and will return.

Time for a bit of R and R

Left on 03/15/2011 for a stay in February 2011

My partner and I had just spent 4 nights at the Muri Beach Club resort 10 minutes from here. Coming here was so much different. The warm welcome, complimentary local fruits and a very detailed list of things to do on the island. The units are only three/four years old and self contained. You can cook most in the kitchen but a turkey might be stretching it (although some may wish to get one of the roosters that wander wild about cook-a -doodling and put it in a pot.) Surrounding gardens, although young, are wonderfully kept and as time moves on the grounds and palms will be even more special. There is a small TV with choice of 20 dvds and a radio cassette player( this let down the side by being a very cheap one with no socket to put in a mp3 cable, people dont carry cds or tapes with them when the travel !) The units are comfortable with outside seating and your own BBQ. Did have issue with ants. Food needs to be put away otherwise them little fellas will find it. No dirty dishes left in the sink for the morning. A car is on offer to rent or you can get one in town or at Muri Beach where there is a choice of rental company's. Local bus can be hailed out front and $4 one way or $25 for ten trips. Half hour to town. The closest food shop of any size is some distance, a little to far to walk so load up. There is The PawPaw restarant 4 mins along from here. It has accom attached. Bbq dinner sunday nights but not worth the money. Also just along from it is the boutique hotel "Little Polonysian", lovely setting with restaurant overlooking pool and beach But staff so so rude. Give it a miss.
A short walk down a grassy path finds you looking at white sandy beach and the water spreading out to the reef. Hardly anybody about, almost like your own private beach. It is advisable to wear reef shoes ( supplied) when swimming anywhere in the Pacific as stone fish ( hard to spot) could be stood on and they can ruin your hoilday. Reef and fish not overly special. A local did get octopus three metres from the beach and my partner said that she was not going in for another swim. Ha. Single or Double kayaks, fins/mask/snorkels also complaimentary. The local dogs are fun to watch, some prance about chasing fish. The odd one is known to swim out and sit on small piece of coral to try to catch something.
Was not keen on coming to Rarotonga for a holiday, partners choice, but turns out staying at Makayla Plams made the visit. Hosts Rachel and John could not have done more. No need to stay at some resort, this is the package.

We were met on arrival and shown through our villa which was sparkling clean and very well appointed.Fridge and pantry were stocked with a few basics, plus a bottle of wine and a sample of Rachel's excellent home baking. The accomodations are set in a beautiful garden which while not strictly "beachfront",less than a minutes walk on a grass path takes you to one of Rarotonga's best golden sand beaches with abundant fish life just a couple of meters from the shore. There were several restaurants within walking distance. As with anywhere in the Pacific Islands take your bug spray as most dining is open air.Our group ranged in age from 17 months to mid 60's,suitable to all.

We made our second trip to Rarotonga and had our second stay at the beautiful Makayla Palms. Once again our hosts John and Rachel provided impeccable service. It was the second visit for my sister and I who celebrated her 50th Birthday while we were there. Just as two years earlier, nothing was too much trouble for John and Rachel. Rachel even got a hairdresser to come and cut our hair at the villas! We enjoyed the lagoon, which we basically had to ourselves most of the time, and the snorkelling was amazing. The only thing wrong was that our 12 days was over far too soon and we are in the throes of planning our next trip. And where will we stay? We have never considered staying anywhere else. After all, if it ain't broke - don't fix it!
