      Villa Ocean's Edge

Left on 10/09/2012 for a stay in October 2012

After an extremely exhaustive search in trying to find a nice place for my family and I to stay in St. Thomas, I found one in Villa Ocean's Edge. I kept reading reviews about how nice Manfred and Margie were, but I didn't quite get it until I met them at the airport. Manfred is the definition of sincerity and really cares that you have a great trip. They put together a book with maps, guides, restaurants and more. They checked in to make sure we were okay.

The house - is spacious. The pool is amazing, the view speaks for it self, the kitchen is equipped with all sorts of helpful items you wouldn't think to get. The grocery store is close by; shops, restaurants and bars are minutes away. Helpful hints:
Go out to eat at Pesce. Best food I had all week. A little pricey but as good as any restaurant we have back in la.
Go out for drinks on Wednesday night in Red Hook. That's the local party night. With no open container laws, you can bounce from a nicer wine bar like XO to Duffy's which is a parking lot bar. We enjoyed both, and if you want local dancing, that's your best bet.

Rent a car! Getting around is easy and learning the island is a piece of cake. I wouldn't want to stay in Charlotte just because it's too touristy, but you need to hit the shops by the port and trying to cab it everywhere is silly and expensive.

We took the car ferry to St John for $54 (round trip) twice during our stay. The beaches are less crowded, the snorkeling is amazing, and it's an excuse to leave the house. We could have spent the whole trip as a group hanging out by the pool. If you hit St. John, go to Trunk Bay. It's as good as it gets. Leave early though, because the last boat back leaves at 6:00PM.

I had a great trip, and this house has everything. Location, price, attentive and caring owners, towels, washer/dryer, large fridge, coolers, etc., etc... Thanks Manfred, you deserve every kind word that comes your way.

Counting the days until we return...

Left on 06/17/2012 for a stay in January 2012

My wife and I stayed here with our best friends and absolutely loved it. Waking up to the sun shinning over the ocean each morning as we floated in the pool was absolutely fantastic. The house has all the amenities (and ones you'd never think you'd find) that you'll ever need. Location, location, location!!! I lived in St. Thomas years ago and find the East End the place to be for the true island experience and Manfred and Margie's home is where it's at. I find having your own car beats relying on taxis, but driving on the island is not for the weak of heart. When staying here you're only minutes away from Red Hook and the ferry dock, Coki Beach and anything else worth seeing. The house itself is spacious and clean with laundry on site. A beautiful kitchen and common space seperate from the bedrooms is designed perfectly so not to disturb the late sleeper in the group. We're already counting the days until we get back there this year and look forward to seeing our new friends M & M. Signed, Kevin, Melissa, Joe & Krystal.

      Serenity at its Best

Left on 05/24/2012 for a stay in May 2012

What a great week I spent at Villa Oceans Edge. It was a special vacation for myself and my best friend. We left our husbands at home and ventured to St. Thomas for the first time. Manfred, Margie and Matt were just like family and took good care of us. Our husbands felt good that someone cared enough to look in on us since we were 2 women traveling alone. The villa was exactly what we wanted- peace and quiet and what a view! We spent most of our time by the pool, which was clean and just the right temperature. When we managed to get away from the pool we ventured to Red Hook and downtown by Safari taxi which was so easy and we enjoyed being in the company of the locals. We were so glad that we did not rent a car-too stressful, it was more fun to let someone else do the driving. Secret Harbour which is very close to the villa was our favorite beach, it is worth spending the day there. There were many restaurants in Red Hook, we liked Molly Malones and Fish Tails since the dining areas were right on the waterfront. Good happy hour specials, we didn't have to spend a lot of money. If you are looking for a peaceful beautiful setting this villa is the place for you. I hope we will be able to return some time in the future.

      Excellent!

Left on 05/07/2012 for a stay in April 2012

I stayed at the Villa at Ocean's Edge for a week beginning april 25, 2012 with girlfriends. First, before you see the property you meet Manfred Soeffing, the owner at the airport. Manfred as polite, patient and accommodating. We followed him in our rent a car to the property located in the Red Hook area of St. Thomas. You enter the property, open the door and see the pool and the breathtaking view of the ocean! Need I say more, yes, I do. The Villa is squared shaped, with the bedrooms (3) to the right of the entrance and the main room (kitchen, dining and living room) to the left of the entrance, the pool being in the middle of the property. The Villa had everything that was needed and some unexpected things such as detergent, in the laundry room, all kinds of spices in the kitchen, paper towels, and trash bags. The location is perfect, the town of Red Hook which has a number good restaurants and the ferry service to St. John and Bvis is just down the street from the Villa. Shopping is close by as well as beaches such as Coki, Sapphire and Linquist. I would highly recommend this property, the Villa was clean and was spacious enough for all in my party. Manfred was a gracious host and accomodated all of our needs. No complaints, can't wait to go again.

      Great views, needs better upkeep

Left on 04/24/2012 for a stay in March 2012

Rental is not for whole villa but for upper floor; lower floor is leased to a group who work at the Ritz Carlton. Their apartment is under the bedroom wing, and their outdoor area is right under the master bedroom windows, so if you like a window open to hear the waves, you hear the downstairs people talking and partying outside--and their yappy dog. Second and third bedrooms are small, not much bigger than the beds, and stuffy. Poolside bedroom has red curtain for closet door, no room for door. Closet has hot water heater and dishpan to catch the water from the leaky roof. Bedrooms are so unequal that it's hard to figure how a group would divide them up. Furniture in dining room is comfortable, not so in rest of house. Mattresses are broken down; two have foam pads on top to fill in the holes, but they don't help much. When it rains hard, most of the rooms flood--up to renters to mop. Pool was way too cold when we arrived, freezing after days with hours of rain. It's a beautiful location, and they're constantly fixing something: an air conditioner was repaired as we arrived; they spent two days fixing the gate, another day to replace the pool filter, another day to refill the cistern. It's a lovely location, but needs some serious attention to furnishings and upkeep. Not wheelchair accessible as advertised: too much furniture blocking access, and we were asked not to use the sliding doors because of problems with the screens. Owner was gracious when things were going well, flustered and crabby when things didn't work. Pool lounges are hard white plastic; pool deck is cluttered with furniture: 2 dining tables, 3 bar type things, over 20 chairs, a large wood bench that seemed to have gutters stacked under it, 4 or more side tables, a gas grill, a large cabinet with grill accessories, 3 large planters, etc. Amenities listed on website when we booked, like a kayak, were no longer available, and owners made a big fuss when we asked about them, said they no longer had liability insurance to cover them, so they took them off the website, but never informed us. Stairs to "private" cove were in serious disrepair; cove itself one of the scarey places to snorkel on the island: lots of rocks and sharp coral, no easy access to water. You can arrange for housekeeping, for $100, but our individual size packs of potato chips and a couple of beers disappeared with the maid.

Response from Manfred Soeffing - 05/24/2012

      Manfred Soeffing

      Owner

This reviewer stayed at the villa for 3 weeks, for which he received a sizeable discount from our weekly rate. The lower floor next to the equipment room, the cistern and the swimming pool tank also contains the original maid’s quarters, which is occupied by a couple that works long hours at the Ritz-Carlton and is hardly ever home. If during the 3 weeks they sat on their balcony – that would have been a rare occurrence. Our master bedroom is very large, but guest bedrooms in the Virgin Islands usually are not (the size of our guestrooms is listed on our various websites). They don’t really need to be, because such a large portion of our lives is spent outdoors on balconies and decks due to the moderate climate of the Virgin Islands. During the 4 years we lived at the villa with our family (before we started our vacation rental business) we had may be four or five meals in the indoor dining area. All the other meals we had on the pool deck, either at the table in the sun or the one in the covered and shady area. To new arrivals we always emphasize that we live only 3 minutes away and we answer our phone 24/7. We tell them: “If anything goes wrong, please don’t try and fix it – call us”. Depending on wind direction during a driving tropical downpour some water may penetrate the sliding glass doors. We were sorry to hear that our guests took it upon themselves to do the mopping up. Our prime location on the ocean means that the air is very salty and will attack anything metallic, creating a constant maintenance challenge. The day of this party’s arrival we replaced one of the AC units, but the work was completed before their arrival. It took a day longer to repair the automatic security gate, because we had to overnight a part from the mainland. During the dry season we usually buy truckloads of water to refill our cistern every two weeks. So if you are staying for 3 weeks, you will be there during a water delivery – but it takes only 30 minutes to unload the water truck. Mattresses were scheduled to be replaced (and that has since been done). We regret that the shipment did not arrive before this guest’s stay at the villa. We were not told in advance that the lady in the wheelchair also suffered from severe back problems. The lounge chairs on the pool deck are plastic, because metal would rust from the salt air. There are several large cushions in the living room, which we suggested they use on the pool deck. All our previous guests appreciated the fact that there is such a multitude of seating opportunities on the pool deck and they used it to entertain guests – some had their wedding receptions there. The wooden bench does not hide guttering, but is used to store hurricane shutters for our 16’x8’ window wall in the living room. Sometimes we have little warning that a storm is headed our way. Hurricanes can change their direction last minute (in the past one hurricane received the nickname “Wrong Way Lenny “) and it is absolutely essential that we keep the hurricane shutters close by. If this limited the mobility of our guest in the wheelchair, all it would have taken is a mention and we would have put some of the outdoor furniture into storage for the duration of their stay. After this party left, we discovered that two of the steps to the beach were in disrepair and we rebuilt them. If our guest had pointed this problem out to us, it would have been fixed the same day. We offered them use of the kayaks if they would sign a waiver of liability since our liability insurance does not cover the kayaks. They decided not to sign the waiver and did not use the kayaks. Anywhere in the Caribbean you should use caution entering the ocean, because there are things like sea urchins and coral in the water. Our pool with its southern exposure is in the sun from early morning until early evening and does not require additional heating. When we were living at the villa, we used the pool year round (the pool at the 4-star resort Ritz-Carlton is not heated either). The comment that hurt us the most was the insinuation that our maid may have taken some groceries. She is a sweet and hard-working young woman who has been with us for over a year without there ever being the least bit of suspicion. If she is dishonest, she missed far better opportunities to steal money and jewelry and not just a couple of beers and some chips. Our villa is wheelchair accessible (and we have had other guests in wheelchairs and no complaints); but by no means is Villa Ocean’s Edge geared especially towards handicapped guests.

      Your own private ocean-front hotel!

Left on 06/03/2011 for a stay in April 2011

We were a group of 3 couples looking for a relaxing escape together - and we found it at the Villa Ocean's Edge. Let me review point-by-point:
      ...Location:
      1) Great proximity to Red Hook - easy for a day sail trip on opus charter.
      2) Close to popular beaches (be aware Coki's bathrooms are under construction).
      3) Best part was private access to ocean - snorkeling any time of day and once at night (with dive lights). Coral in better shape than most public beaches.
      4) Very good food store close by (possible to walk to) - had everything we needed: food, beer, wine, liquor.
      ...Amenities:
      1) Great Room - loved the spaciousness, made preparing meals a fun group event. The grill on deck was used almost every night.
      2) Perks - air conditioning in all rooms, water cooler near bedrooms, flat screen TVs - with service to music channels.
      3) Pool - clean and just the right temperature.
      4) Deck - view, view, view! Spent many hours watching boats, iguanas, countless birds, gazing at stars... awesome! Loved the shaded deck area off the master bedroom - welcome relief once you're sunburned!
      5) Villa's computer and internet access is handy for occasional use.
      6) Automatic generator avail for power outages.
      ...Service:
      1) M&M; are wonderful. Very readily avail for any issues. They provided a great information book on the villa as well as the island and were eager to give advice on island activities.
      2) Lots of sunscreen, beach towels, kitchen supplies.
      ...Fyi:
      1) Despite the villa's citronella candles, some of us got lots of mosquito bites. I recommend wearing long pants when spending the evening on the deck. Thank goodness there were bug zappers inside villa.
      2) Verizon cell service available but costs $2/minute.
      3) Ocean here is protected marine area.
...Overall, this oasis of relaxation is a bargain! We can't wait to come again!
