This great house has everything you could possibly need to enjoy a stay in Orkney. There are a wealth of books, leaflets, games etc. The house is well furnished with comfortable beds, plenty of seating, all the mod cons. There is plenty of space so you won't be cramped even if like us you have a big party staying there.
The only downside was that the fridge was a little on the small side for all our food so we had to go shopping a bit more than we would have liked. Also, the bunk rooms could have done with some drying out as it was a bit damp in there (the boys didn't complain though as they were too busy in the fantastic games room).

Couldn't have asked for a better cottage. For us (7 of us) the location and facilities were perfect. The seperate building with the pool table was a major selling point for my sons. On finding the guitar, drum set and keyboard, they thought they had died and gone to heaven. Getting them to leave the cottage to explore Orkney was difficult. The only slightly down side was a lack of a lock on the utility room with the second shower but perfectly manageable. The key store was a great advantage when we went in seperate directions.

House very good with everything you could want, but broken vacuum cleaner.
The only problem we had was we could not get into key safe top get the key. No answer from keyholder/cleaner, no answer from owner and Mackays closed at 5pm.We managed to contact caretaker through locals, fortunately he had a spare key as he could not get into key safe. Without the help of locals there was no way we could know caretaker as his details were left inside house.
peaceful and pleasurable

House is extremely comfortable and well-equipped.
Orkney is a very windy place, but the garden and outdoor area always has a sheltered spot.
Rural Orkney is beautiful and conducive to peace of mind.
Can't recommend Lower Midgarth sufficiently highly.
Superb cottage for a quiet relaxing holiday.

Well furnished, well appointed and very comfortable. A cot would have been useful. A peaceful place to rest and relax.
On the downside, one room had not been cleaned properly, the bedding was dirty and the room was infested with spiders.
Lovely cottage, maybe could be more attentively looked after

This was a lovely cottage, lots of room and most of it was great. The rooms were nice, the beds comfortable and the garden beautiful. The kitchen was, if anything over equipped and a lot of the utensils and crockery were dirty and had to be be washed before using. The insides of the kitchen cupboards and drawers were also a bit off putting with a large collection of crumbs etc. There was enough cutlery, crockery and glasses for at least 20 people, perhaps if there was less stuff it might be easier to keep clean. The cottage was described as having three bathrooms/toilets, but we only found 1 bathroom with a bath, shower and toilet and another toilet, surreally off the kitchen, beside a shower room/utility room - it was not possible to use this shower as it was literally full of mops and cleaning equipment. If we had been more than 1 family this would have been quite inconvenient. The games room, which the children appreciated, was a complete tip when we arrived. Someone came one day and cleaned it and then left us a somewhat tetchy note telling us to keep it tidy. There was storage for the bikes in an outhouse, but this was also very untidy and contained several containers of weedkillers etc. As we were travelling with teenagers this was not a problem but those with younger children might need to be careful. There was a file full of instructions for equipment - except the ones you needed, like how to work the oven, or the heating system. The walls were a mass of switches and it took us several days to work out what they all did.

This holiday house is in a lovely location but is certainly not 4 star. On arrival it was obvious that the previous occupants had been smoking, the cleaner had left the windows open to try and get rid of the smell but it took over a week of spraying with air freshner to improve it. There was no hot water, the shower was tepid but was replaced after three days. Most of the crockery was chipped. There were no instructions on the operation of the heating/hot water, in fact no helpful instructions on shops, places to visit or eat out. The second bathroom was in darkness as the lights didn't work, and you couldn't get to the shower for all the cleaners equipment in front of the door. There were no logs for the wood burner, apart from 3 on the hearth, and no idea where to obtain them from, the woodburner was full of cigarette butts. As for the games room, dark, dirty, dismal, a complete joke. Generally the house was a disappointment, it needs a good clean and sort out to bring it up to 4 star, as befits its location.
A glorious stay

This is a great house. It is an interesting blend of modern and ancient, in a fabulous part of these fascinating islands. It felt like staying in someone's home rather than in a vacation rental.

The property was excellent for our needs being well equiped clean and spacious, could not have asked for better.
We were on a fishing trip and the location was central for our planned outings both sea and fresh water.
Would book again.
Good for Orkney but needs some tweaking to get it up to 5*

The property is in a great location...sheltered, near the sea, a quiet road nearby and close to the Tingwall Pier to be able to jump on a ferry and visit nearby islands. The house itself is nicely furnished, warm and comfortable. The owner's art collection and own sculptural pieces are wonderful and greatly appreciated. The vistas are second to none and the sitting room in particular was a geat place to spend time together on sunny evenings.
The minus points (and there such with any place but I hope to write a balanced review, take these or leave them) were; lack of storage in the second/twin bedroom and the 4th bedroom was rather fusty and wouldn't make a very nice bedroom. It was airless and rather unwelcoming. The washing machine leaked and the caretaker had little interest in coming to see it/organising an engineer etc. The owners have alot of their clothes etc in the wardrobes so it does feel like staying in someone else's home rather than having a clean slate which has it's plus points but also its disadvantages.
What would I have asked for to improve our stay? A clean house on arrival with an empty fridge and freezer, fresher, plainer bedlinen and nicely aired bedrooms. More support when things went wrong in the house. A hoover that worked. Better storage space/mirrors etc in the other bedrooms. A proper Kitchen table that could be wiped down instead of Lloyd loom style side table x 2 which looked nice but weren't terribly practical. Having said all this it is a pricey property but we would probably recommend it for a family)or possibly an extended family if renting the hostel type accommodation across the yard) depending on what time of year they were going and what they hoped to do whilst they were in Orkney.
