Left on 05/19/2013 for a stay in May 2013
Hubby and I stayed two nights at Coqui's Hideaway earlier this month, specifically to be close to El Yunque. We really only had one full day to enjoy the area because we flew into Ceiba in the afternoon and stopped in Fajardo on the way to Rio Grande. The home is beautiful and so is the property. As mentioned before, for some reason the pictures on the website don't fully depict what you actually find when you arrive.
Ray and Gwen have thought of everything from kitchen items (storage containers, foil, etc) to things needed for adventure (coolers, boogie boards, rain ponchos) to general items to make your stay more comfortable (ear plugs - for those bothered by the coquis, plenty of towels, bandaids). In addition, there are plenty of books and binders with information to help you plan all your activities. A special touch is the complimentary basket which includes fruit from the property, homemade banana bread, snacks and all the ingredients needed for pina coladas!
Unfortunately, Ray was called away unexpectedly and we weren't able to meet him. Gwen, however, was able to hold down the fort perfectly fine in Ray's absence. She was always available (mainly for our travel advice) and we got to meet some of their dogs - we were missing our four legged friends at home. The pool and its setting are lovely, but we were not able to enjoy it or tour the property to check out the various fruit trees and flowers. We also were not able to make it to the beaches in Luquillo or the kiosks, but that leaves something for next time.
Pros: Beautiful setting, cleanliness, helpful owners
Cons: Reason for 4 stars on value: There were only two of us, so the 2nd bedroom was not needed & there is a slightly higher rate for stays less than 3 nights. This was not a big deal, but we did pay a little more than originally planned. The 2 bedroom option would be perfect for two couple or a small family & the 3 bed/2 bath option would be great for 3 couples or a larger family.

We absolutely loved our visit to Coqui's! I traveled with my newlywed husband and two other couples. Our hosts were extremely friendly, and provided awesome instructions on how to get to this remote location.
The property was absolutely beautiful!! It was like a picture out of a movie. The amenities were nice... not 5-star hotel nice, but the guest house was clean and homey and had everything we would ever need.
I was absolutely blown away by the descriptive journals that were available in the room: 3 large binders full of elaborate reviews rating everything from individual hiking trails within El Yunque to favorite restaurants in San Juan to popular tourist excursions throughout Puerto Rico.
The hosts do live on the property and have dogs that will occasionally come out... we enjoyed the company of both human and dog, but if you are looking for something a little more private, this may not be the place. -

We loved our stay. Ray and Gwenn were wonderful, information-filled hosts with a beautiful property. They are diligent about providing everything you could need (e.g., beach towels, toys, chairs, umbrella and coolers for a trip to the lovely white-sand beach a 20 minute drive away). The house has everything you'd need, including internet and satellite television. They greeted us with a bowl of fruit from their trees and all the fixings for pina coladas, which we drank every night by the pool. The pool has a great view, a shaded veranda and you can see to the ocean -- but the pool itself is miniscule, more like an out-sized jacuzzi for cooling off, so don't plan to swim on the property. We made easy day trips to the rain-forest and the beach, and grocery and restaurants were a short drive. You will need a car, and not be fearful of a driving narrow winding roads.

Left on 04/28/2013 for a stay in April 2013
A wonderful place to stay while visiting Puerto Rico. Ray and Gwen are wonderful hosts who are very willing to share their knowledge of places to visit and eat at while here. We took a sailing day trip on the Erin Go Braugh and Captain Keith and Ingrid took wonderful care of us. We went snorkeling near some coral reefs filled with beautiful fish, took turns sailing the boat, and tried some of Captain Keith's homemade salsa.
We also went ziplining with The Rainforest Zipline company (which is a great course to intoduce your children too), went hiking in the El Yunque Rainforest (the Juan Diego trail is worth checking out).
Our girls loved walking through the lush grounds at Coqui's Hideaway (just watch out for fire ants) and were always on the look out for the Coqui frogs. They also enjoyed running into Ray and Gwen's dogs who were wicked cute.
The road leading up to Coqui's Hideawy is not for the faint hearted, but if you can get past the cars driving down the middle of the street at fast speeds, dogs in the road, some large pot holes, and even a pole in the middle of the road(don't hit the pole was our daughters favorite thing to say each time we were on the road) you will be rewarded with a great little hidden gem. -

Hosts Ray and Gwenn Bentz seem to have anticipated their guests' every need or desire at this comfortable lodging near El Yunque rainforest in Puerto Rico. The accommodations are clean and modern and the grounds lush. On top of that, Ray and Gwenn have filled a fat binder with detailed reports on places to go and things to do in the area. The reservation process is not the most laid-back -- you'll sign a contract and pay a security deposit and receive a long list of directions/instructions -- but you'll be pleased you went to the trouble once you get there.

A little out of the way yet still close to beaches and the rain forest by car.
Gwenn and Ray are the ultimate hosts: friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. Be sure to check out the binders in the bookshelf full of their personal experiences hiking, beaching and eating around the island. Lovely grounds to stroll, wonderful veranda off the back bedroom with views across verdant hills to the sea. The only downside is the size of the pool; it's more a wading, sitting pool, not much space to swim. -

West Chester, OHTop 5 Reasons to Stay at Coqui's Hideaway
Left on 04/19/2013 for a stay in March 2013
1. The Property --- Coqui's Hideaway is nestled in the foothills of the El Yunque rain forest & accommodates only 1 group at a time. the property is beautiful & private, both features that we love on a vacation. Because Coqui's is in the foothills of the mountains the views are nothing short of spectacular. You can sit pool-side & look out over the lush tropical mountainside with the ocean in the background.
2. The accommodations --- Fresh flowers great you when you arrive as does a basket including local treats such as coffee, candy, fresh fruit, homemade bread & (my favorite) the ingredients for the perfect Pina Colada. Everything from beach towels to extra pillows to Dvds to buckets & shovels for the beach are provided for you. Ray and Gwenn have thought of everything!
3. The Fruit --- Gwenn is a big tropical fruit fan & this is her playground. Growing on the property are things like bananas, limes, grapefruit, pineapple & things that we've never hear of like caimito, jack fruit, bullock's heart, & more. If you want to sample new types of fruit all you have to do is let your hosts know & they will bring you fruit picked right off of the tree. But my favorite fruit is the grapefruit, fat & lush & full of juice, I had fresh grapefruit or juice every day of our stay.
4. The Knowledge--- Ray & Gwenn's website, www.puertoricodaytrips.com, provides great information about the island, activities, restaurants, beaches, sightseeing & more. To research all of these points of interest they have actually hiked, toured & eaten all over the island. So, they know the island inside & out & can help you find that one thing that you're just dying to do on your vacation.
5. The Hosts --- last but definitely not least, Ray & Gwenn are wonderful hosts. Whether you want to be left alone or need a question answered they can help you. of all of the places that we've stayed Ray & Gwenn are the most gracious, kind & accommodating hosts.

Best vacation ever! Ray and gwenn were amazing hosts and were a wealth of information regarding the island of Puerto Rico and all that there is to do. We stayed at Coquis Hideaway for only 3 nights but didn't want to leave after the first night! Ray & Gwenn have thought of everything to make you feel comfortable while exploring the wonderful island of Puerto Rico. The view from all places on the property is amazing and the pool is a delight. One of the best experiences is listening to all the sounds at night that sing you to sleep. We will never go back to a hotel again in Puerto Rico...we have been spolied!!!

We have visited Puerto Rico many times and Coqui's Hideaway is by far the best on the island. We enjoy having our own house instead of staying in a hotel. The house was spotlessly cleanand we appreciated the gift basic of goodies that awaited us. Gwen & Ray provided many more amenities than a hotel could provide. The house is a short drive from Old San Juan, Luquillo Beach, and El Yunque. The views from the veranda and our own private pool were spectacular. You could see the ocean in the distance! The tropical plants and flowers were unlike any we've seen. I enjoyed morning and evening strolls through the acres of our own botanical gardens. Although there are many things to do on the island you will be reluctant to leave this beautiful property.

This is our second year staying at Coqui's Hideaway. We used to stay at the Fajardo Inn (8 years running) in a one room Suite with a kitchenette (microwave and fridge). this is a massive upgrade for about the same price (I think that Coqui's was about $10 cheaper per night) . 2 bedrooms, full kitchen with a breakfast bar, dining room, living room (complete with cable tv and hi speed internet), bathroom and laundry facilities. There is also a bbq outside the front door.
then, there's the private pool. complete with shaded table and chairs, food prep station (counter, sink with running water, mini fridge and another BBQ), Hammock, lounge/sunbathing chairs and a view.
Location was great, halfish way between San Juan and Luquillo. Outlet mall, grocery store and big box stores right near by. 10 minutes from the end of the new toll hiway that takes you to the outlet mall and back to San Juan.
Last but not least, there's the hosts, Ray and Gwenn. They were friendly, helpful, hospitable and all round great people (and Gwenn makes a mean banana bread!)
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are planning to return next year.

We'd been looking forward to our stay at Coqui's Hideaway with great anticipation and I can tell you it was even better than expected. Ray and Gwenn are gracious and knowledgeable hosts, they are experts on all elements of life and leisure on the island. I loved their binders they had in the guest house in which we were able to peruse and learn abut everything from the best waterfalls in the El Yunque rainforest to where to find the most scenic hoseback riding tours. My absolutely favorite thing was the welcome basket we received which included ingredients for a pitcher of pina coladas (yes! the guest house has a blender...and everything else you could possibly use on your stay: washer and dryer, beach stuff, etc...) as well as the basket of fresh fruit picked on the property! We also loved floating in the pool and soaking in the rainforest sounds while gazing at the beautiful vista which reaches all the way to the ocean.
I can not wait to come back to Coqui's Hideaway. It is comfortable, clean, welcoming and over-all a wonderful retreat. -

We were very pleased with our stay here. The house, grounds, & amenities were all as described; and beautifully well maintained. The owners' attention-to-detail provides all you might need, as far as at home entertainment & excursion activity info. You can enjoy a sense of seclusion & privacy with a great view, while still being a short drive to activities or stores. Great location for hiking EL Yunque rainforest in the morning and spending the afternoon at a beach. One nice surprise for us, was the minimal insect and mosquito presence (compared to previous island stays in other locations). There were some small mosquitoes out after dusk, but not alot- even with all the rain. Even after our hikes through El Yunque, our daughter (who is usually a magnet for insect bites) ended the week with only 1-2 small bites. We had rain showers multiple times during the days & nights, but they were always short and the sun would reappear. The rain didn't hinder any of our activities. (Our girls actually really enjoyed playing in the pool during one of the very light rain showers.)
This is a peaceful getaway location. Many thanks to Ray & Gwenn!! -

Our stay at Coqui's Hideaway exceeded our expectations. The home was private and was situated in a beautiful setting of nine acres of gardens, birds, and tropical sounds. The home was very clean and had all the amenities one could ever hope for. There was even a tropical fruit basket and ingredients for making Pina Colladas awaiting us on the kitchen counter. There is a nice pool and patio surrounding it if you are so inclined. The location was very convenient for visiting sites on the eastern part of the island. If you are into nature you will love this place, and it's a short drive to El Yungue National Forest which is the Us's only tropical rainforest. The are lots of hiking trails, waterfalls, and mountain peaks to see in El Yunque. The home contained notebooks of places to go and see, very well done.
The owners live on the site and could not have been more helpful. Our flight was late and we did not arrive until after dark. Ray met us at a restaurant about 3 miles from the Hideaway so we wouldn't get lost on the back road to their place. Amazing. Ray and Guenn were so helpful and kind providing directions to places we wanted to go and see each day.
If you happen to be bird watcher like we are, their place has lots of birds, many of which are endemic. The PR Tody was easy to find with Guenn's help. There are also lots of nature preserves to explore nearby.
We had a wonderful stay and would not hesitate to highly recommend Coqui's Hideaway to family and friends. -

A short drive from San Juan, this private rainforest accommodation is 9 acres of beauty you share only with the owners, your hosts. We received a great snacking tour of the fruit trees with host, Ray. We took bananas and other fruit back to our kitchen and made smoothies. They welcomed us with a basket of fruit from the garden as well. My kids loved the little pool (not a lapswim pool at all), I loved the view from the pool. Incredible view from the private deck. The accommodations are nicer that the videos on the website can capture, great value stay. Plan ahead, they book up fast. You need a car to stay here. 15 minute drive to El Yunque, we took great hikes recommended from Ray and Gwenn's folder of daytrips. Relaxers could just stay here all day, though, happily.

If you are the type of person who likes to find something off of the beaten track, but still close to all amenities and activities; then this it. We loved our stay here. The owners are helpful and have thought of many ways in which to make your vacation comfortable and enjoyable. The property is lovely and well taken care of, and the home was comfortable for our family of 5 and very clean. Many thoughtful touches from the owners such as fresh flowers and fresh fruit from the property, and a few local treats. There are 3 large Binders full of information of the island and the owners are more than happy to answer any questions. You will be happy doing as much or as little as you want here - you never have to leave the pool with the million dollar view- but there is a great beach 15 minutes away, hiking and exploring El Yunque nearby, outlet shopping and grocery are an easy drive. If you want to venture farther you are close to major highways. We highly recommend this property - not if you want a Resort kind of getaway- but if you want to truly relax and experience a little piece of Puerto Rico then this is for you. You will not find a better run vacation home on the island.

We just comopleted a fantastic stay at Coqui's Hideaway and we are sure to return. I know you'll think I am on the payroll by this review, but believe me I am not! The location of the house is superb, allowing for exploring the national park, beautiful beaches and Old San Juan all from one convenient location. The owners are the best I have ever encountered and made the arrival from the airport a breeze with helpful and detailed descriptions. They have excellent materials to enhance your stay, including useful information on a San Juan visit and on the rain forest. They even provided fresh fruit from the property upon our arrival. The house is spotless and inviting. The pool is wonderful with a great view and the grounds provide a chance to see many fruit trees and local vegetation without leaving the property. We had beakfast each morning on our own veranda overlooking the grounds. Every detail of the house is carefully planned by Ray and Gwen who treat you like a valued guest. The stay was also a great value. We chose to buy local foods and grill at the house so that we could enjoy the pool and house each evening. This is a no brainer: stay at Coqui's Hideaway!

We spent 1 week in Puerto Rico and split it betwen Rincon and the area near El Yunque. We only wish we had spent more time at Coquis Hideaway--2 days was definitely not enough. But from the time we arrived to the time we left, we enjoyed our stay immensely. Ray was there to meet us when we arrived after dark and made sure we got settled. Seeing the beautiful grounds and the views the next morning was a real treat and so relaxing! Although we had some rain to contend with, we were still able to enjoy the pool and the peaceful setting. The house had absolutely everything you could want or need--I can think of nothing lacking. If you plan to visit the rainforest or the eastern part of the island, you will not be disappointed with Coquis. We hope to return again soon and spend our entire vacation at Coquis. We stayed at Coqui's for 7 days with my husband, 7 year old son and my mother in law. We couldn't have been more blown away! The pictures on the website do not do the house, the gardens or the views justice! Ray was a wonderful host...there when you needed him but giving us privacy the rest of the time. The house is immaculately kept and the decor was beautiful but comfortable. Our very favorite was the view from the veranda. Breathtaking. The fruit basket was well loved by my son and the welcome basket was very thoughtful. Though we were out and about exploring and site seeing (we put 800 miles on the rent-a-car), Coqui's was a welcome site at the end of the day. Coqui's is a great place for families, honeymooners or anyone wanting to escape everyday life for paradise. We are already planning our next trip. As my son said "Mom, can't we just buy Coqui's and stay here forever!".

My husband and I stayed here during our honeymoon. We were beyond pleased with our experience. When we arrived, we thought the house looked even better than the pictures we had viewed online. The house was also immaculately clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The grounds were amazing, and we really enjoyed the view of the rainforest from the back porch and the pool. The location of the house was very convenient to everything we planned to do during our stay.(Note: renting a car is a must.) The price of this rental is definitely reasonable when compared to hotels/resorts in the area, especially when you consider that Coqui's Hideaway has a full kitchen and a washer and dryer, both of which we found to be particularly convenient. Also, Ray and Gwenn are incredibly accommodating when it comes to giving advice on activities and helping with directions. We would definitely recommend Coqui's Hideaway to anyone visiting Puerto Rico.

Ray and Gwenn were kind and generous from the beginning of our stay to the very end. They welcomed us with a lovely basket of fruit from the property and they helped us with very detailed travel information on what to do during our last day on the way to the airport. They are extremely helpful. The grounds of the property are well maintained and fun to explore. The house is clean, spacious and very nicely decorated. I have already recommended Coqui's Hideaway to friends.

Our stay at Coqui's Hideaway was just perfect! After a long flight from Los angeles to San Juan and arriving late into the night, Ray was constantly available by cell phone to help us find our way to Coqui's Hideaway and make us feel comfortable and welcome. We have to stress that Ray stayed up past midnight and waited for us near the main highway to make sure we found our way to the hideaway and showed us the accomodations. The accomodations for the six of us (four adults and two children) was just perfect; the three air-conditioned rooms were just right for us. The living quarters were very clean and well equiped for us to cook our breakfast and lunch and the grill by the pool was perfect for a late-night dinner while the kids enjoyed the pool. We all loved the unrestricted access to the pool while the adults loved either staying in the pool, admiring the scenic view of the surrounding mountains and gardens, which were just spectacular. We enjoyed every aspect of Coqui's Hideaway and were very appreciative of Ray and Gwenn's friendliness and warmth. We will definately return to Coqui's Hideaway, for a longer stay, on our next trip to Puerto Rico. Thank you Ray and Gwenn for your hospitality and assistance. The Tropea Family

We loved this place from the moment we drove through the gate. Actually, we loved it even before b/c of the wonderful pre-trip information supplied by Ray and Gwenn. The property is lovely and full of beautiful tropical plants and fruits - some of which will be waiting for the guests on the kitchen counter upon arrival. The welcome basket was lovely and very tastey! The house itself is so comfortable - perfect for a family/extended family/or a couple. The pool is very refreshing as well - with lounge chairs around and a table where you can eat dinner if you choose. The El Verde bbq, which is recommended by Ray and Gwenn, is great. We took the food back to Coqui's and had an incredible Puerto Rican dinner our first night. We spent 10 days total in PR (only a couple of which at Coqui's) and I think that the dinner from El Verde was among our favorite. We went to Culebra and upon arrival decided that we needed to find different accomodations, so we called Ray and he was so helpful in giving us some suggestions! Needless to say, great hospitality at Coqui's! Thanks Ray and Gwenn, we'll be back some day!

This rental was altogether different for us. First of all it was like "home." When we arrived Gwenn and Ray had a welcome basket waiting for us on the counter. We were starving and having the homemade banana bread there was so nice. There were also fresh fruits picked from their garden. We fell in love with the Jamaican cherry. The property and apartment are very well maintained. The veranda is beautiful. The pool area has a terrific view. You are not cooped up in some small spot, you have a huge lush property you can explore. In addition to satellite tv Ray has an extensive collection of vidios to watch. Being able to unwind and relax here was fantastic, whether we were inside or out. Ray and Gwenn know so much about the island and having their information at your fingertips helped make our excursion choices easy. They have several binders full of the printed material from their web site. And they live on the premises,so if you have any further questions about driving, etc. they are so willing to help. Their property is about a half hour drive from the San Juan airport, and maybe 20 minutes to the entrance to El Yunke National Rain Forest. We also took the ferry twice from Fajardo to the island of Culebra. Once to snorkel and kayak, and once to just hang out the most beautiful beach of Flamenco. We did a lot in our short stay (Friday to Friday). There are so many trails to choose from in the rain forest, and Gwenn's excellent reviews helped to pick the one that was right for us. Even before we arrived Gwenn was so accomodating by answering my questions about different day trips to make. I was able to plan ahead a little and make our vacation time more relaxing. This is a beautiful rental and property, and extremely gracious hosts. You will not be disappointed!

My husband and I spent 5 nights at Coqui's Hideaway in late april. We wish we had booked for longer! The house was bright and clean and had all the comforts of home plus some. Ray and Gwenn have thought of every possible convenience. We loved the property, especially the beautiful landscaping around the pool area. We ate all of our meals outside on the terrace, at night listening to the coquis and watching the twinkling lights of San Juan. The location was great for visiting sites in the Eastern part of the island. We did two trips to the rainforest, a day trip over to Culebra and a day trip into San Juan. Ray provided beach chairs, a cooler and even the small containers to make the day trips, and packing a picnic lunch fun and easy. There is also a huge, well-stocked supermarket just a few minutes away. Ray was great to deal with, he provided lots of useful information ahead of our visit as far as local restaurants, groceries and reliable tours etc. The welcome basket with fruit from his garden, and supplies for pina coladas was a nice surprise. We would definitely recommend Coqui's and would definitely book here again if we come back to Puerto Rico.

This house is lovely, very well maintained, and cleaned to perfection. I felt that it was even nicer in person than how it presented in the online pictures. The property is gated and secure; we felt very safe at this location. Ray and Gwenn thought of everything, stocking the house with every incidental that could possibly be needed for a smooth, stress-free vacation. They reside on the grounds (the house is divided into two sections - their residence and the vacation rental), making them easily accessible to answer questions or attend to any concerns. Just be aware that the water from the kitchen faucet acquires a pungent taste if it sits in the pipes too long. We resolved this issue by filling a pitcher with drinking water immediately after the dishes had been washed in the sink and the water had run for a few minutes.

No one has ever mentioned the taste of the water in the kitchen sink. We'll look into it and see if there's something we can do about it. Thanks for the heads up!

If you intend any time in the Fajardo area & @ the rainforest you have to stay here. This place is Quality with a capital Q. Plenty of space in the apartment, quality apliances and cupboards, every convenience you can think of, and a welcome basket with fruit and coffee, as well as fixin's for pina colada's - including the rum. Also an amazing flower arrangement picked fresh from the yard greets you as you walk in. My wife and I have been around the Caribbean and have seen all kinds of tropical flowers, but not like this guy has - you likely will see varieties you've never seen before. We enjoyed the fresh fruit too - there for the picking. Ray was very helpful with answering questions as to the best time to do things when trying to fit a lot into a day of two. When thinking of something different & Island style for dinner grab a roasted chicken @ El Verde BBQ & Bar at the intersection of 3 and 186 and watch the girl chop it up with a machete. I would go back there in a heartbeat. I forgot to pack an item and it's already in the mail back to me - Ray/Gwenn, thanks for the opportunity and your help - you're great people.

Coqui's Hideaway is just as you see it in the pictures from the website - clean, organized and well maintained. Ray answered our questions during our stay (places to eat, things to see, plants and flowers on the property, etc). The pool on the property was a welcome retreat after a day out sightseeing. Dinner on the veranda watching the sunset was another favorite for us. The binders that were provided with helpful information about Puerto Rico were quite helpful. I'd recommend reading the blogs from their sister site before your stay so you can have an idea of what you'd like to see and do. Can't say enough good things about Coqui's Hideaway (and the owners).

Coqui's hideaway has to be one of the best accommodations I have ever had in Puerto Rico. I have visited the island 3 times. The "casita" felt like home walking in. The property itself is gorgeous. Beautiful lush gardens of fruit and tropical flowers. The veranda afforded a beautiful view of the surrounding rainforest and in the distance the ocean. The suite was had everything we needed to make a wonderful dinner, snuggle into watch a movie, or just lounge about on the outside hammock next to the pool. Very convenient to El Yunque, Luquillo, Fajardo's Bio Bay, and a short drive into San Juan. Highly recommended!

Coqui's Hideaway is a great place to stay in the Caribbean National Forest. The owners live in half of the building, and the other half is available for guests. Beautiful views out to the ocean about 10 miles away from the verandah and the pool. The unit is very comfortable, private and quiet, well maintained and clean. It takes about 8 minutes to drive the 3.5 miles up from the main road (route 3), where there are grocery stores and restaurants. Very comfortable for an extended stay. We'll definitely go back next time we're in Puerto Rico.

We were 2 couples traveling and it is great to have a "house" set up where you can make a few meals and whirl up some cocktails to enjoy by the private pool. The view from the pool is gorgeous- across the mountains you can see to Isla Verde and the landscaping is also very pretty. We slept at night with the windows open and enjoyed the small sounds of nature. The beds were good. The house was very clean and anything that you needed was there. The hosts are accessible but not hovering. They are also super knowledgeable about things to do in the area.

Coqui's Hideaway in Rio Grande, PR completely exceeded our expectations.
The rental is bright, cheery, and sparkling clean, and is perfectly suited to accommodating couples and families alike.
The grounds are spectacular, with fruit trees, a swimming pool, and a fabulous view of the forest and sea beyond.
Coqui's Hideawy is located off a winding road, and feels faraway, but we learned quickly that it's just a short drive to the beaches, Old San Juan, Luquillo, and Fajardo. We are so happy to have chosen Coqui's Hideaway instead of staying in the city or at a crowded beach resort.
Ray and Gwenn are exellent hosts and are very helpful with advice concerning the grounds, the area, and all sorts of activities. We especially enjoyed eating freshly picked fruits Gwenn provided (bananas! canistels! guavas! starfruits!).
We are very much looking forward to staying at Coqui's Hideaway again, hopefully soon.

Our family spent 6 days at Coqui's Hideaway. It was conveniently located for exploring the eastern half of PR. We went on day trips to San Juan, hiking in El Yunque, out on a catamaran to Icacos Island for snorkeling. After a day in which we had a long hike in El Yunque, we spent one day just hanging out at Coqui's. The gardens are lovely with a vast array of orchids & bromeliads. The pool area has a wonderful view down the mountainside to the ocean. And Ray & Gwenn are terrific hosts: they made our holiday very special, providing fruit from their gardens, and special Christmas treats. It was a wonderful place to stay.

My sister, a cousin and I stayed at Coqui's for a long weekend girl's trip in august 2011. Our arrival was just 5 days after Hurricane Irene hit the island and power had not yet been fully restored, including at Coqui's for the first day or so. The owners, Ray and Gwenn, were very honest about the conditions on the island prior to our arrival and offered to refund our money if we decided to cancel. We decided to come anyway and loved our "Survivor Style" getaway. The owners made extra efforts to make our stay as comfortable as possible and help us find replacement activities for those that were canceled due to the hurricane. Ultimately, we were able to do all of the we planned, have some time to relax on the gorgeous property and enjoy the beautiful weather. During our stay we went ziplining/rapellking, snorkeled on Culebra, kayaked in the Fajardo bio bay and toured Old San Juan and Coqui's was in a perfect location. Our group agreed that we would definitely stay here again on a return trip to PR and highly recommend it to our friends and family. Thanks to Ray and Gwenn for an awesome trip!

We enjoyed our hike in El Yunque (thanks to Ray's recommendation regarding which falls to visit), our visit to Luquillo Beach, and the area restaurants. We picked up our first night's dinner at El Verde (Ray's recommendation), and that was delicious. We also ate at the Ossobucco kiosko in Luquillo (Puerto Rican-Italian cuisine), and that was outstanding. Ray & Gwenn have put a lot of time into the binders that review things to do. Their suggestions for restaurants and coupons for activities is well worth the review.

This was our first stop when arriving to Puerto Rico for the honeymoon I surprised my wife with. Given the surprise and how it was revealed the day before, the hype and anticipation for the trip was very high. It got me thinking, "what if it's not as great as the reviews said?"
Well no worries there because it was everything we had read about and seen on the web and more! Gwenn and Ray were simply fantastic and would have made great hosts no matter what the accommodations and setting... but the fact that we were located in a rain forest paradise with impeccable accommodations made it that much more perfect. My new bride and I agreed we wouldn't have changed a single thing about the choice to go to Coquis Hideaway, other than that we'd have love to stayed longer!
The other reviews here pretty much speak for themselves so I won't repeat all the wonderful things about this place, other than that Gwenn and Ray really do think and genuinely care about every detail. We haven't ever experienced anything like their thoughtfulness when traveling. Truly fantastic. Thanks for getting our perfect honeymoon off to a wonderful start! -

The simplest way for me to review Coquilles' Hideaway is to tell you to scan over all the reviews (and they are all positive reviews) that other people wrote. Then multiply by ten. That will come close to describing the wonderful time we had there.
As hosts, Ray and Gwenn go above and beyond. For us, they were an unexpected integral part of our vacation plans. They guided us and helped us find wonderful things to do based on our particular interests. It turned out that they are more knowledgeable about the area than anyone else including, and perhaps especially, the government tourism board. Ray and Gwenn's suggestions made our trip a true vacation!
The house was immaculate. The grounds are gorgeous and well maintained. We were so comfortable there that we actually "wasted” two days hanging around the house and the pool! ? As vacation rental managers ourselves, we noticed, and appreciated, every attention to detail. And there were many! Everything from the welcome basket which included fresh tropical fruit from their trees to discrete signs around the house gently reminding you of the features of the house. Then there are the volumes with local information with not just a list of things to do, but their impressions and experiences at those places.
The whole package created an environment where we felt like comfortably at home in a new and beautiful place; with people nearby (but not hovering!) who simply wanted us to have a wonderful time while we were there. -

The pool area features bbq grill, covered veranda, dinner table, lounge chairs, sink, fridge, and amazing view of the island and sea. Love the enormous dvd collection. It's constantly updated. Beach chairs and beach towels are a real plus, too. The coqui frogs really bothered us the 1st night and we moved into the other master bedroom-slept like a king/queen. The house is fully equipped. Since it was dark out, he met us at the main highway and led us up through the mountain road to the house. Throughout our stay, Ray and Gwenn were available if we needed anything, but also respected our privacy when we walked around the grounds or hung out in the residence. We loved exploring the sorrounding gardens and rainforest. The house was immaculately clean and had everything we needed including a full kitchen, as well as a washer and dryer. Our favorite place in the house was the veranda overlooking the rainforest and ocean. The only drawback was a neighbor's dog that barked a little more often than we would have preferred. With that said, Ray is working on the situation and it really didn't take away from our enjoyment of our stay.

Ray provided a 10% off coupon with East Island Excursions (Ray and Gwenn provide discounts for other excursions) and we had a great time snorkeling off the East Wind catamaran. We also had lechon at Guavate, toured Old San Juan, laid and swam at the beautiful Luquillo beach (La Monserrate), took fantastic photos while driving the coastline to Humacao and Pinones, shopped at Plaza Carolina, and had many great and diverse meals (from lechon to chinese food). The Puerto Rico people were always nice and very helpful giving directions during our driving adventures. If you plan to stay at El Coquis Hideaway, you will need a rental car and a little spanish would help -- though many of the people in Puerto Rico do speak English. Though we did not have the chance to meet Gwenn, Ray was always helpful and made the visit comfortable and fun.
Thank you Ray and Gwenn! We hope we get a chance to visit your beautiful home again and lovely Puerto Rico!

We had a lovely time in PR and loved coming home to Coqui's. Ray and Gwenn were always helpful without intruding at all on our space. The pool and views were spectacular. Our favorite night was grilling by the pool, toasting with the (thoughtfully provided) pina coladas, and listening to the wildlife. Truly a great way to enjoy friends. We will definitely return if we are in PR again!

We had a very enjoyable stay at Coquis hideaway. We were a family of 6 (5 adults, 1 kid). This is a great place to explore the North and North east of the island, El Yunque, San Juan old town, the several beaches at a 30 minute or less drive.
Ray and Gween's place has beautiful gardens, a great pool area with an amazing view. The house is very comfortable and has all the appliances needed.
Ray was always very helpful. He has a very good knowledge of the island. He will quickly understand your needs (if any) and will make great suggestions.

Coqui's Hideaway was a wonderful choice for our family. We stayed 4 nights and our plans included a zipline, hiking the rainforest, snorkelling, kayaking, horsebackriding, and Luquillo beach, all of which are within a 30-minute drive. So Coqui's location and natural atmosphere worked in perfectly with our plan. Unfortunately, most of our plans were washed away by a tropical "disturbance" that poured several inches of rain upon us each day. Ray was gracious to offer suggestions and driving directions for alternate plans. During our rainy stay we spent many more hours indoors at Coqui's than planned so we were appreciative of having the extra space to read or nap while the boys played or caught up on the latest Dvds in the extensive collection that the Hideaway offers.

Our family stayed at Coqui's while visiting El Yunque and among the many homes and villas we have stayed at in the Caribbean it was in the top three in every category. The hospitality we received was top notch. The owners' vast knowledge of the island helped us make plans and just "get" the Puerto Rican culture. They were always available and yet we never felt intruded upon...it was as if we had the estate to ourselves until we needed something. We truly appreciated their warmth and the many small amenities like the fresh fruit basket which made us feel welcome and pampered in every way. The house was impeccably clean and the grounds were amazing. The veranda was a great place to wind down and relax or have a breakfast with what is truly one of the most breathtaking views on the island all to ourselves. This property is definitely underpriced for what you receive. Our only regret is that we had not booked for a few more days. I recommend Coqui's Hideaway without reservation.

Coqui's Hideway is a beautifully situated guesthouse on the side of a mountain with gorgeous views and grounds. This rental has been thoughtfully outfitted with everything a vacationer could want and more. The pool is a lovely place to relax amid the landscaped grounds overlooking the valley. The back porch is set-up perfectly for meals, or hanging out and enjoying the view. The house had everything we could possibly need for a day at the beach. The owners provide such extensive information on visiting Puerto Rico that it would be a great place to begin your trip and take advantage of all their knowledge. There are so many wonderful activities situated nearby one could easily spend a week or more.

We spent 3 nights at the Coquis Hideway. We arrived to a welcome basket that included banana bead, fruits, snacks and pina colada ingredients, what a welcome. The place is beautiful. As soon as we get there, my kids were in the pool and my husband and I were sitting watching them surrounded by an incredible view.
The hosts, Gwen and Ray, are great. Any questions I had before the trip were answered quickly. There is 2 huge books filled with information on things to do in Puerto Rico. They were there is you had any questions or need any suggestions. Ray took our family to see the secret waterfall. You can tell they really love what they do.
We rented the 3 bedroom and 2 bathroom. The kids were very comfortable. They loved all the dvds, Tv and internet service. There is a deck off one of the bedrooms, what a view. We also grilled out.
I can't say enough about this place. If you plan a trip to Puerto Rico, this is a must place to stay. It is close to the rainforest, San Juan, beaches and biobay trips. -

There were six of us. Four adults and two teen boys ages 14 and 17. Everyone was thrilled with every aspect of our stay. No complaints whatsoever.
Ray and Gwen were great. Ray was very attentive and amicable to any needs or questions we had. I enjoyed visiting with Gwen and gaining insight as to real life living in Puerto Rico. She also let my 14-year-old play frisbee with one of the dogs, which made him very happy.
The tours they recommended were great. They gave us a coupon for discounted golf, that we had not anticipated, and were very grateful for. They also have a wonderful collection of DVD movies, which we all enjoyed.
We spent a week here to unwind before taking a 7 day cruise for my 50th birthday. I had done some pretty extensive research and knew that I did not want to stay in a mega-hotel room. I looked for a clean place where we could spread out a bit, cook some of our own meals and feel at home. Coquis Hideaway fit my needs perfectly.
We spent a couple evenings cooking out by the pool and relaxing. The photos do not do it justice. The view is amazing and the grounds are extremely well manicured. It is truly a haven of relaxation.
It was a wonderful start to a great birthday. Ray and Gwenn's hospitality was icing on the cake. -

Coqui's Hideaway went way beyond me and family's expectations! This trip was a graduation trip for me, my husband, our daughter, and her girlfriend. We needed a place where the adults could relax, but 2 teenaged girls could feel like adults and wonder around on their own. Coqui's 9 acres was perfect! Ray and Gwen meet us at the home, prepared a welcome basket and even hung a "congratulation grad" banner in the living room! The pics on this site can not possibly show you how beautifully maintained this home and it's grounds are. And the views are storybook gorgeous. There are two huge binders in the house with information on outings on the island... Use them, especially if you are looking to tour the island without the typical tourist crowds. I still can't get over how detailed the information was. For food..all you need is El Verde's at the bottom of the hill..seriously, and try the yucca with garlic sacue! And make sure you take the time to go to the "secret waterfall" around the corner from the house...of course, directions are in the binders! Again, great house, great hosts, and wonderful trip!!

We had a wonderful stay at Coqui's Hideaway. The location is stunning and we relaxed the second we arrived. The gardens and view are stunning. I loved wandering the grounds and listening to the cacophony of sounds of the rainforest including the coqui frog. The house is very comfortable, clean, and well appointed with lots of extras including stuff for the beach, coffee and other staples in the kitchen, and a huge selection of DVDs. Binders full of information regarding hikes and day trips were extremely helpful with all the information that you need (including detailed driving directions). Ray and Gwenn are wonderful hosts, welcoming, attentive, and available for all questions, etc... I also appreciated the ease with which we were able to make our reservation including timely responses to e-mails. We loved the fruit basket and basket of Puerto Rico treats and enjoyed the banana bread on the trail! Our sons (11 and 7)loved the pool. We spent 2 days exploring the rainforest. Highlights were hiking to Juan Diego falls and swimming on the river (the Angelito trail I think). Both provided welcome respite from the midday sun and lots of boy action building dams, swimming in the waterfall, etc... We also enjoyed a kayaking excursion to the biobay in Fajardo. A fun adventure even for our 7 year old. We would highly recommend Coqui's Hideaway.

My family and I had a wonderful stay at the "Hideway". After taking a 7 days Cruise out of Puerto Rico we wanted to spend some "quality" time when we returned from the cruise. No need to rush home right !! We had been to Puerto Rico twice before but stayed in the standard Tourist areas. This time we really wanted to experience Puerto Rico and see the beauty of the country.
Ray and Gwenn were the perfect hosts. We were truly welcomed. The fruit basket and homemade Banana Bread were an added treat. The name truly fits their vacation home. After a relatively short trip from the airport (that's where we rented the car) - we stopped at the Barcardi Plant for the free tour. Little did we know what kind of treat we were in for. The views up the road to Ray and Gwenn's are nice but once you get to the Hideaway and see the property, hear the sounds of nature and the smells of the flowers. You will know you made the right choice - we did. The pool area is very nice (Showers and a fridge) and they can tell you everything about where to go to get anything you may want. They have all the info and directions on any other adventure you may want to pursue while there. We hits the Grocery Store (Ralphs) after we dropped of our luggage. Make sure you go to Palmer's Bakery on the way to the Rain Forest and get a sandwich or something sweet. I would say your first time there try to get there before dark it will be easier to find. But, after one time you know where you are going. The accomodations were very nice and we would go there again. Thanks for a Great ending to our Vacation !! The Hunters' and The Ashleys' -

They welcomed us with a gift basket of fresh fruit from the property and wonderful banana bread. The property is absolutely beautiful. Our 20 month old enjoyed running around exploring all the flowers and picking bananas and grapefruit from the trees. She also loved the pool. We went on a few hikes in the Rain Forest and also visited the beach. The house came with beach chairs, towels, and toys for the beach which was very convenient. Coqui's Hideaway is simply the best! They have taken care of every little detail from labeling all the light and fan switches to having every single thing you would ever need in the kitchen. They also have thought of everything you'll ever need for the beach with beach towels, beach blankets, beach umbrella, etc. And that's just the beginning......the grounds are absolutely stunning with flowers everywhere, fruit trees, and the pool!! Oh my gosh....the pool area! They have a gas grill, a sink, a mini-frig, a hammock, a beautiful patio set with a fan above. We spent a lot of time grilling out, playing cards, and enjoying the gorgeous view ~ you can see all the way to the ocean! We really wanted to make sure that we had enough time to just hang out at the house and pool just because it is so gorgeous and relaxing. They also have a binder FULL of information about things to do in the area. I had read most of their posts on "puertoricodaytrips.com" so we had our week planned but it's so awesome to have all of that information at your fingertips. The other really great thing about having Ray and Gwenn next door is that they were there if you needed them with directions or advice but they give you all the privacy you want. We had asked them before we came if they had an IPod player for the pool ~ Ray replied that they didn't but guess what.....by the time we arrived, they had bought one!! We have never had service like that in all the places we've ever stayed! We have 2 adult children and having the 3 bedrooms was so perfect so that they could have their space, too. Oh, did I mention the hundreds of movies that they have to watch on the big screen TV? I've been telling my friends so much about this place that I think some of them might plan a trip to Puerto Rico just to stay at Coqui's Hideaway! We are already dreaming of the day that we can come back and stay again.

I would recommend Coquis Hideaway if you are looking for something different from the hotel scene. It was great to be a part of Puerto Rico by living in one of their neighborhoods. Even better was having our own personal "travel agents", Ray and Gwen living next door. They were there when we had questions about attractions. They also provided notebooks with activities they had experienced and they written about. The house was very inviting and comfortable for our family of four. Much better than a cramped hotel room. Our teenagers LOVED the acreage that came with the house and we spent several days just hanging at our private pool, walking/exploring all the tropical trees and plants and even hiking to a waterfall nearby. Half of our pictures of the trip came from Coquis Hideaway. The welcome basket Gwen prepared was delicious and we always had bananas and grapefruit every morning. We used the grill to cook out for many of our meals.
The house was 15 min from the Luquillo beach where we spent time on three different days. 10 min from EL Yunque National Forest, the only rainforest in the US territory. And 40 min from Old San Juan.
I appreciated how Ray was very prompt in responding to all emails that I sent before and after our stay.
We would definitely stay there again!!! -

We could have done more exploring of the island and managed to do some day trips every day, but it Coquis Hideaway is a very difficult place to leave. Relaxing and reading by the pool, with the lovely views, wandering the well maintained grounds and observing the artfully designed landscaping was just the mid-winter break we needed from the snow and ice of the Northeast. Coqui's Hideaway offers a vacation experience that is just plain hard to beat!
It's definitely off the beaten path, a little hard to get in and out of ... but that is part of it's charm!
If you enjoy a clean, comfortable, quiet, relaxing "villa" type of setting ... this place has it in spades!
You'll also be pleasantly surprised by some of the things that you probably weren't expecting.
The first thing you'll likely notice is a bouquet of beautiful and exotic flowers in a vase on table,
followed by a gift basket of "goodies" including the ingredients for a blender-full of Pina Colada and some of the best banana bread that I've ever had!
Another bowl on the counter is chock full of tropical fruits ... fresh-picked from the amazing 9-acre gardens that you'll explore later.
After you become settled, you'll discover more of the details, and you'll begin to realize and appreciate the obvious effort and commitment that the owners have put into providing you with a pleasant vacation experience.
Virtually all of the "local attractions" questions you may have ... have already been answered! There are 3 binders of "What to see", "How to get there" (and by the way, you get discount coupons for the asking!)
The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook for yourself. About the only thing you won't find is a dishwasher.
There's a covered deck off the Master BR, complete with a patio table and lounge chairs.
There are 2 propane grills. One near the door, and another at the pool.
Beach towels and gear, including chairs, umbrella, and snorkel equip are provided.
The pool itself is fairly small and "refreshing" (translation: "un-heated"), but it's very clean and well-maintained. There's a covered deck, a mini-fridge, that gas grill, a table and chairs, and comfy loungers.
The bottom line:
Would I recommend it to friends?
Would I stay there again myself?
ABSOLUTELY YES!!

We were so lucky to have found Ray & Gwenn's place on vrbo.com. I can not explain the very special place these Owners have created for visitors. We visited many areas of the island (and off-Vieques) and it is by far the only place worth an extended return visit.
All the other reviews are correct. The location is perfect. We spent a long day at El Yunque. We took some advice we found online and arrived at the forest at 7am (truck loads of tourist buses arrive promptly at 9am). We had the forest all to ourselves. After several hours of exploring, we called it a day and headed to the house.
The house-I can not say anything negative about the house, The position of the pool is breathtaking. The grounds are unbelieveable. It is a welcome surprise to see how much pride these Owners have taken in the island.
Gwenn and Ray have really outdone themselves. It is like a private mini-resort.
You can easily take a day trip to anywhere on the island. It's a perfect home base. -

Thank you so much for welcoming us into your home. We think you've got life all figured out! And we really enjoyed our time here. It was, of course, too brief - but we never like to leave the island.
It's amazing that we just came from a high-end resort (the Rio Mar) but didn't feel as though we were truly "in paradise" until reaching your beautiful home. There was something truly relaxing, home-like, and heart-warming about grilling at the pool, fixing our meals, and spending family time together at Coqui's Hideaway. You have definitely made this a memorable visit for us at one of our favorite places.
Coqui's Hideaway is definitely in our thoughts for our next trip to Puerto Rico.
PS - We are looking forward to exploring Piñones on our way to the airport. Thanks for the recommentation! Also, the rainforest was awesome! We did pack a picnic lunch - also a great suggestion!
Before our arrival here, we ate at the kiosks & visited that beach - always fun! And we recommend the restaurant Antojito's for great authentic Puerto Rican food - good food, fair prices and a kids' menu. Try the red snapper and crab mofongo.

The pool area was the favorite of the teens, and the grandparents loved the wonderful views and beautifully landscaped grounds. The house is fully stocked, clean, and comfortable. Driving up the mountain road (and in Puerto Rico in general) takes a little getting used to but really isn't too bad.

As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Ray and Gwenn, two very friendly people.
The home we rented was spacious and well equipped with everything we needed during our stay. I can't tell you how happy I was to see a blow-dryer in the bathroom vanity, since of course I forgot to bring mine. The home is brightly decorated and cheery at first sight. I of course love the coqui decor to go along with the name of the villa.
The location is an adventurous one as only windy roads will get you to your destination. It is a treat to drive these roads but just be very careful at night.
We felt safe in this home. We really liked the gated yard b/c of the children especially. The entrance off the main road itself was a bit rough but nothing too cumbersome.
We really liked that Ruta 3 was easily accessible from the home and that this led to many wonderful and enjoyable day trips like El Yunque Rainforest, Luquillo Beach, Roberto Clemente Coliseum and many others.
You would be very happy with all that Coqui's Hideaway has to offer. We definitely were. -

We stayed here for 5 nights with 2 children (ages 2 and 6). The location, house, everything was wonderful! Our 6 year old has several allergies (pollen, peanuts, dust mites) but he was perfectly fine with no symptoms whatsoever the entire stay. The house was very, very clean, there were several games (board games, cards, dominoes) for the kids to play with while we made supper. There were over 100 videos of recent family movies to watch (for free), so we had movie nights every night. The swimming pool was spotless and had an incredible view of the rain forest and the sea and San Juan in the backgound. We were welcomed with a basket of fruit and pina colada ingredients when we arrived. Very cool! Needless to say, we made pina coladas every night we were there. As far as the property goes, Ray and Gwen have thought of everything down to the tiniest detail. There were beach toys, boogie boards, etc. for the beach. Toys for the pool..everything. Location was also perfect. It is 20 minutes to get to Luquillo Beach which is absolutely beautiful and good for small kids because of the palm trees----lots of shade. Also, the Yunque Rain Forest is only about 20 minutes away. San Juan is about 30 minutes. There are lots of local places to buy food and several tourist shops in the area and grocery stores. We are already saving for our next trip and we will definitely stay here again. Oh! Beautiful gardens on the property too with little lizards all around and you can listen to the coqui frogs at night. I can't recommend this place enough!

the pool, the rooms and all the common areas are
beautiful and well-maintained. Ray & Gwenn are

The villa is very conveniently located. Loquillo
beach is only 15-20 away. El Yunque park less than
15, Fajardo and Old San Juan 30-40 minutes...The
best part is when you are on one of those short
long weekend trips, you can skip all of that and
just enjoy the pool and gardens in your limited
time. Oh, and important to mention: The place is
children-friendly; our little daughter enjoyed the
place very much.

Ray and Gwenn thought of every little detail. The view from the veranda was fantastic, the pool view is breath taking. The property grounds are well kept with lots of fruit trees all around the property. We had some fresh papaya, grapefruit, bananas, guava, and other tropical fruits from the property. The locations is perfect , close to the beach, the Rain Forest, Old San Juan and of course the airport. The drive to the property is a little way from the main road but well worth it. We can?t wait to go back and stay at El coqui hideaway next year. Please make sure you stop at El Verde restaurant and pick of some chicken it is out of this world. Many thanks to Ray and Gwen for their Hospitality and the great info they provided. Everything you see and read on the coqui website is right on the money. Everything is real and you will not be disappointed.
Thanks,

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Coquis Hideaway. We are a family of 5: 2 adults & 3 teen-agers. They house was great and had room for everyone. The kitchen was well supplied and there was beach gear available for our use. One of our sons lived in the swimming pool when we were at the house. Ray & Gwenn were very helpful with ideas about what to see and do. Not only was the house great; the property was also. Picking grapefruit off the trees for breakfast was a bonus. We would definitely would stay here again.

If you're looking for an amazing peaceful place, look no further! The host of Coquis Hideaway have created the perfect getaway located at the edge of the rain forest. You'll find every amenity you could possibly need and its clean and done with a fine eye for comfort and style. You're surrounded by the best views of the forest and one of my favorites is falling asleep to the sounds of the coqui frogs and birds singing. The private pool is perfect for a cool down, a restful day or an evening under the stars. Oh of course comfy beds, soft towels, beach stuff, a full kitchen, special treats, and excellent details of all the islands activities with discount tickets! Book it - you will have the vacation you've been dreaming of.

Coqui's Hideaway is a beautifully maintained property
- very comfortable and well-equipped with everything
you need. The grounds, several acres, are
immaculately kept - Ray gave us a fascinating tour,
identifying different tropical fruits and pointing
out interesting facts. Ray and Gwen are wonderful
hosts - we were given a warm welcome, provided with
much knowledge and information about the region and
our 9-year old's enthusiasm for dogs was rewarded
with inclusion in the daily frisbee games. We
recommend this as a great base for the rainforest,

As we entered into the home, we were greeted by a specially arranged bouquet of local blooms. Everywhere we turned there were thoughtful amenities placed for our enjoyment and convenience. We found the balcony overlooking the vista to be relaxing after a long day. The new pool was refreshing and the view was worth the trip alone. Our daughter enjoyed all the pool toys. Ray and Gwen (and dogs) were good hosts and answered all our questions. Due to an unexpected injury before our vacation, I was on crutches and used a wheelchair, which was well accommodated by the facility, much to our relief. We cooked most of our meals in the well equipped kitchen - even using the large grill. The basket of Puerto Rican wares was fascinating and enjoyable. Strolling along the grounds of the property was refreshing and educational. I have lots of pictures of flowers! The drive to the hideaway was scenic and the surroundings were classic Caribbean. Tip: Go check out Flamenco Beach on Culebra Island! We can't wait to go back and visit again!

We just came back from our unforgetable island vacation. We absolutely adored this place. Ray and Gwen, the ownwers, are super helpful and always kept us informed about everything. They keep very detailed and updated informational guides that helped us organized our excursions around the island. They also made us feel very welcome. When we walked into the house, there was a Greeting Basket with all kinds of Puerto Rican goodies and fresh tropical fruits right from their property trees. We left feeling relaxed and wanting to come back again and again. I highly recommend this beautiful ground level, immaculate kept site: a fully stocked kitchen, 1 bathroom, 2 bedrooms, in-home laundry. Its so convenient! The location is excellent to tour the entire island. It's just minutes away from El Yunque Rainforest and the beautiful Luquillo Beach. Our first day there, we went beach hopping. To my surprise, they had everything we needed: Beach towels, beach chairs, beach bag, snorkeling gear. They thought about everything! We highly recommend this place.

A very comfortable and relaxing place- "all the comforts"available. Gorgeous view from the back porch- looked like Hawaii- we had breakfast there every morning- well equipped kitchen- washer and dryer was very convenient, less to pack and lug around- wireless internet with our laptop and all the sightseeing info on Ray & Gwenn's website plus the 10% discount on lots of daytrips saved us both time and money.
My husband gives it a five and had no problem with the winding road getting up the mountain. The only problem I had was that I had to take Dramamine before going up or down from the house (car sick) Also- watch out for the drivers coming around the corner in the middle of the street. The house and owners were GREAT! -

Staying in Coqui's Hideaway was a great pleasure for us and our four children (age 2-10). Our communication to get a reservation was very good, friendly and helpful and so was the rest of our contact with the owners. They live right next to the rental home but did not interfere in our 'private sphere' at all when we did not ask to. When we had some questions they were very helpful (they know very much about Puerto Rico and the things to do there, see their website www.puertoricodaytrips.com and much of the information is in a big binder in the house). The house was very clean and complete, including toys and games for the kids and lots of movies. We lacked nothing. The environment of the house is very quiet and beautiful, with a very nice view from the porch or the pool deck. After a day of hiking in the rain forest, visiting Old San Juan or shopping in the outlet mall, the kids enjoyed playing in the pool while we were BBQ-ing at the pool deck and enjoying the sun going down. The garden is a little paradise, with many fruits growing, ready to pick and eat. We highly recommend this place to everyone who likes to go on vaction in Puerto Rico and wants to be near the city (San Juan), the rainforest (El Yungue) and/or the beach (Luquillo/Fajardo). Coqui's hideaway has got it all!

Left on 07/06/2009 for a stay in June 2009
Coquis Hideaway was perfect in every way. Set in the foothills of the El Yunque Rain Forest this villa was nothing short of beautiful.
We rented the 3 bedroom, 2 bath version of the villa (you can also rent it as 2 br and 1 bath) which gave us 1100 square feet of living space. So, we were able to spread out and all (my husband, myself and our 2 boys)have our own personal space which was quite nice.
The property was immaculately cared for and our hosts, Ray and Gwenn, were the best. Any question that we asked or request that we made was greeted with perfect attention.
For example, Ray recommended the little traveled Juan Diego trail in the El Yunque rain forest. We followed his instructions and hiked to a beautiful waterfall and pool that we had completely to ourselves. Our boys (ages 7 and 10) had the most wonderful time exploring every bit of this hidden gem.
The grounds of Coquis Hideaway were beautiful. The pool is strategically set where the trees part to expose a beautiful view of both the mountains and the ocean. We ate dinner on the deck by the pool on our first night and it was perfect.
Honestly, if you are looking to get off of the beaten path and away from the business of the big, corporate hotels then you must visit Coquis Hideaway. We recommend it to everyone! -

We found it hard to drag ourselves away from the incredible pool area, and looked forward to returning to it after a day out. To sum it up, our short stay at Coqui's was great. Ray and Gwenn (the owners) are delightfully friendly, and were more than willing to give us travel tips, directions, etc to make the most of our stay.
We had the two bedroom for two people and it was very comfortable. It felt like a home away from home. There is a washer/dryer which we were not used to (coming home with clean clothes for a change is pretty nice). They have an extensive DVD collection. Lots of travel info. Fully stocked kitchen (pots, pans, blender for pina coladas and more). All appliances are very nice and new. Air conditioning and fans in all rooms. Beach towels and umbrella available to use.
If you go outside, you are greeted by tropical plants, trees and orchids spanning the many acres of their property. It was a pleasure to walk around and enjoy the views. The pool is private and very relaxing.
The location in Rio Grande is close to ideal. You are out of the busy San Juan area (30-40 min from the airport), but close enough to beaches (Luquillo and others), the rainforest (it's harder to get closer to El Yunque), and Fajardo (which has a lot of day trips - side note: make sure to do the biobay tour in Vieques, you won't regret it).
Overall we had a great time and are already looking forward to coming back sometime in the future.

We went to Puerto Rico for our Honeymoon and decided to find a privately owned place to stay as opposed to a hotel/resort. We had just rented a condo in New York in December and loved it. Well, this is the way to travel, and we may never use hotels again.
Arriving to the house we were greeted by Ray, who welcomed us and showed us around the house, which was very neat and clean. There was also a beautiful welcome basket provided by Ray and Gwenn full of bananas and other fruits grown right on the proberty, as well as home made banana bread, local snacks, and some Rum. As soon as Ray left us we immediately dug into the basket. It was great.
The property is beautiful, and private. I wish we had more time to spend just hanging out by the pool, which is set in a beautifully secluded spot on the property, but we kept ourselves too busy. A family or group could spend an entire day just hanging out and barbequeing by the pool.
Ray and Gwenn have also spent a lot of time putting together information binders that give their reviews and recommendations on things to do and places to go including resaturants, beaches, hikes, diving and snorkling spots. These binders are in the house for you to browse. If you have any questions or need more ideas, then Ray and Gwenn are usually right next door and more than willing to help.
There were also some left over things in the fridge from previous guests like condiments, beer, eggs, etc., so before buying a bunch of stuff, go to the house first to see what's there.
In closing, we loved Coqui's Hideaway, and will recommend it to anyone going to PR. We also recommend staying in private homes/condos.

Ray and Gwenn have a beautiful property nestled in paradise. The views from the balcony and the pool area were breathtaking. Their hospitality was warm and accomodating. They went out of their way to assist us when our arrival was pushed back due to a snow storm. Our concern was primarily location because it was far from our family who live on the other side of the island. We hope to return someday and explore El Yunque which we were unable to do this time around. We recommend the Coqui Hideaway for anyone who wants a beautiful retreat away from the city.

Although a bit removed from the beach, we found Coqui's Hideaway to be just the ticket for our vacation. Quiet, peaceful grounds and beautiful views greeted us upon our arrival. And, although it rained often, this added to the charm of the place. The acreage, tended by Ray & Gwenn, is both beautiful and bountiful. Many of the plants were in bloom and, during our stay, bananas, grapefruit and other, much more exotic fruits were available for collection from the trees to eat and enjoy.
The house itself is an extension of the main residence, almost a duplex. Ray & Gwenn live in one half and the vacation house is in the other half. The house is fully equiped for a wonderful vacation. Upon arrival, the beds were already dressed with fresh linens, the kitchen stocked with all the pots and pans needed to make our own meals, and the refrigerator populated with beer and condiments left from previous customers. Ray & Gwenn even provide a basket of fresh fruit, some homemade banana bread, and the makings of Pina Coladas just to make sure we got into vacation mode as quickly as possible.
The house can be rented in a two or three bedroom configuration; when in three bedroom mode, there are two bathrooms. In addition, there is a full size washer and dryer, which were mighty welcome after spending a day at the beach. The pool is a short stroll from the house and includes an outside table, gas BBQ, sink and frig. Although small, it felt great on the days when it was hot (and not raining) and there are several chaise lounges for sunning.
Ray & Gwenn made us feel right at home. Although not intrusive, they were always available to answer any questions, give a tour of the property, and show us the many varities of plants growing on their acreage.
I would recommend this place without reservation. If you are looking for a vacation home away from the big hotel scene, look no further. You will be happy here and well rested after your vacation.

We really liked this place. We took a three day weekend to escape the cold NYC winter, and wanted to be able to go a lot of places without spending too much time getting there. It was close to San Juan, the beach, the rain forest. We could do a lot of stuff in just a few days because we were so close to it all.
But it was even nicer just to hang out on the property, look at the views, eat bananas off the tree, take a nap by the pool. It felt far away without being inconvenient.
The apartment itself was spotlessly clean and pretty spacious. Had everything you need and stuff you didn't know you needed.

My boyfriend and I chose Coqui's Hideaway for a vacation away from the crowded tourist strip and to experience the real Puerto Rico. We weren't disappointed, as Coqui's was secluded with a beautiful view of San Juan and Coco Beach, but yet convenient to all the excursions we had planned. We liked the central location and, with a rental car, we were able to explore many parts of the island.
We enjoyed their tropical plants and fruit around the property, including bananas, grapefruit and caimitos (which were delicious). They also thought of everything at the pool area with a refrigerator, cabana and hammock.
The unit was clean and it was stocked with all the necessary kitchen tools and brochures / reviews of things to do in PR. The hosts were helpful with questions on our side trips, and we even received a discount on our Vieques Bio bay trip through them.
We would return to Coquis and recommend to our friends and family. -

Washington DCAmazing Hosts, Pictures Don't Do it Justice
Left on 05/15/2009 for a stay in May 2009
I can't say enough about Coquis Hideaway. Their website does not do it justice. When you are there, all you can see is an amazing view, fruit trees, beautiful grounds, and your own pool and grill. We wanted secluded, and when you are there the rest of the world seems so far away.
Ray and Gwen are the perfect hosts. They stay out of your way if you want privacy, but do all the little things. On a rainy day, we woke up to find umbrellas and ponchos waiting outside our door. they have beach stuff and snorkel gear there for you. A great DVD collection for a night in, free internet, and satellite tv. They have great advice when you want it, and have really useful discounts they can set up with attractions around the island.
For us, they went WAY above and beyond. I went to PR on a surprise trip to propose to my girlfriend. They helped me surprise her with a champagne picnic in the rain forest for the proposal (a very elaborate plan I won't get into here) then had a candle light dinner waiting at our private pool back at their place. Not that this is standard when you stay with them, but they really go above and beyond!
When we were there we were already talking about bringing a group back (we were only the two of us and it's a nice large space), what more can one say? And though they say they don't provide breakfast, the fresh fruit they gave us, grown right there, was AMAZING, as well as the fresh baked bread.
It's a fun little drive to get up there, but it's really quite convenient to everything...we did a day in luquillo, one in fajardo, one in old san juan, El Yunque of course, all easily doable from coquis hideaway in a day.
In sum, I cannot imagine you would not be thrilled with staying there, and they made our engagement a story we will retell for the rest our lives.
Thanks Ray and Gwen!

While planning our trip to Puerto Rico, we looked at every possible option as to where to stay. After giving it a lot of thought and consideration, we decided to stay at Coqui's Hideway in Rio Grande. Our reasons were that we felt a private villa offered us a better chance to relax, spreadout, and enjoy ourselves. We liked the idea of having a kitchen where we could get up and relax and make our own breakfast rather than feeling like we needed to be ready and out the door early enough so that we could get breakfast.
Our decision turned out to be a great one. Coqui's Hideaway was clean and comfortable. The owner's have really thought of every detail to make their guests feel at home. It was so nice to have beach chairs and beach towels (and all sorts of other beach going items) there and waiting for us to use. All sorts of things were there to make our stay easy and stress free.
We also enjoyed that the villa was centrally located to all of the things we wanted to do while we were there. We did the Old San Juan tours, went to Fajardo and took a power catamaran to Vieques and swam in the Bio-bay, went to Seven Seas Beach and Luquillo Beach, hiked in the rainforest, etc.
I'm so very thankful that we didn't stay in the city. We truly felt much more relaxed and free to what we wanted when we wanted.
I highly recommend this property. -

My family and I stayed at Coqui?s Hideaway over thanksgiving day weekend 2008, and found it to be fantastic! The house is very clean and well appointed, and the grounds are a lush tropical garden. The pool is small but perfect for the kids, and the hammock in the shade, was perfect for me. We used all three bedrooms on our visit and had plenty of room for all 6 of us. The kitchen was fully stocked with all the utensils we could need to cook a thanksgiving dinner, and we ate out on the private porch every night. The owners were very nice and checked in to be sure we were satisfied, and showed us where we were able to pick our own tropical fruits, some I had never heard of before but I really liked.
It?s a bit of a drive off the main road up the mountainside, but when we got there the view was worth the trip. Surrounded by the rainforest, but you can see the ocean, and at night we watched the cruise ships arrive and depart San Juan. Also, It did rain each day, but only for 5 or 10 minutes. Be sure to bring lots of sunscreen, buy it when you land!!!

At the end of each day of wonderful forays about the island, we stopped here and picked up our dinner and a perfect beverage to sit on the veranda at Rays, and watch the twinkling lights of San Juan, listen to the intoxicating rythms of the Coqui frog blended with the latino music that seems to eminate from all the hidden valleys. And then the full moon comes over the hills. This was our second visit, we were married on the beach on the first. My wife and I plan to make this an annual anniversary. And our hosts seems to emulate the kindness and amiability found in all the people we have met in Puerto Rico. Muy Bueno!

Washington, DCLush rainforest retreat
Left on 05/04/2009 for a stay in December 2008
This is an off-the-beaten-path gem. It's tucked away on a hillside with a huge lovely garden with banana trees, oranges and grapefruit along with beautiful tropical flowers. The pictures don't do it justice. It is still part of the rainforest area, so there is plenty of moisture - we loved listening to the rain fall and the coqui chirps at night. It was great for the kids - they loved the pool and chasing the tiny lizards outside.
Even though it was removed, the house was close to where we wanted to go - I think the longest drive we had was 20 minutes. I would love to go back. -

We enjoyed all the comforts of home - including available beach chairs, coolers, great DVDs while exploring PR. Loved the tropical fruit and flowers and had a great New Year's Eve with our family by the pool, grilling dinner and watching fireworks.
Hosts were helpful with touring ideas...We'd love to come again. -

My husband and I rented this lovely home to emjoy a week with our two grown children and their spouses. This rental allowed us to share our time with each other unlike hotel rentals would have alloted. The grounds are lovely, with a beautiful and private pool, gorgeous views, convenient location and away from the bustle of San Juan, though close enough to spend an afternoon in old town. We found a basket of local food, fruit and drink mixtures upon arrival which was delightful. Easy access to hiking El Yunque and kayaking the bioluninescent bays, we had breakfast every morning together, packed lunches, ate out, and enjoyed cocktail hour poolside. Truely, my only feedback for the cottage would be to supply nicer pillows, being such a lovely place to sleep, upgrading the pillows would go a long way. Oh, and there is the most beautiful veranda around the front side of the rental, we used it constantly. Our family would stay at the cottage again. The hosts were available when you needed them, helpful, considerate, and politely absent when we wanted our private time.

We spent 3 nights at Coquis Hideaway and found it very comfortable. The owners are extremely helpful; the house is very clean. We had a rented car and found that this location was ideal with respect to the rain forest and the beaches. The house is located way up on the mountainside and this made for a wonderful view from the balcony off one of the bedrooms. The kitchen was very well equipped and the living room had everything necessary to entertain the family in the evening. There is a small swimming pool which was ideal for our son to relax in at the end of each day.

Stockton CA and Washington, D.C.Beautiful home, lovely gardens

I rented this home for my daughter's family and me over winter break. We all love warm climates and the beach. Although it is a bit of a drive to the ocean, it was well worth it. The grounds are akin to a botanical garden. My favorite place was the veranda, with an unparalleled view of the rain forest and glimpse of the ocean. My grandson found a "magic tree" -- some sort of tangerine tree with small orange globes of fruit -- that was his special place. The Bentz's were gracious about letting us pick some of the fruit. They have a lovely pool where you can also have a barbecue. Our hosts were unobtrusive yet very helpful whenever asked. They gave us good tips and had personally scouted out the places they recommended.
