Description from the owner
The Professor's Home is located just outside Roatto d'Asti, a little village in the heart of Lower Monferrato, Piedmont, Italy. It was our family house for over a century; now we rent it out as temporary residence to guests looking for a viable and cheap alternative to hotels and B&B.;
We can accommodate up to eleven people in 2100 sq ft, and we rent for one to four weeks.

Additional Location Information
The Professor's Home was built on top of a hill by our great grandfather between 1890 and 1920; it is a traditional Piedmontese farmhouse, which was refurbished and modernized over the years without overlooking the distinctive traits of country life: the hayloft, the big shed for the tools at the back, the large pavement for agricoltural work at the front. The house is surrounded by a partially fenced 2.4 acres private property.
The thick brick walls keep the house cool even in the hottest summers, making air conditioning unnecessary; during the winter we use central heating and two fireplaces, one in the kitchen and one in the living room, finally you can use the wood-burning stove for heating as well as for cooking.
The house rests on a large cellar, that hosts our tiny wine production; many rooms are large, each of them measuring about 300 sq ft, with vintage furniture and windows screens.
Downstairs there is the living room, whose floor dates from the early twentieth century, with a fireplace, a Petrof upright piano and a vaulted ceiling featuring floral decorations; the kitchen, with a wood-burning stove and another fireplace; from the kitchen there is also the access area to the main bathroom, where the washing machine stands. The TV set with satellite dish and decoder is in the kitchen; it comes complete with a DVD/DivX player and a cassette recorder.
Upstairs there are a second bathroom and four bedrooms, two facing south and two facing north. Each of them sleeps two to four people.

Portland, OregonBeautiful Country Home Close to Everything
Left on 01/09/2013 for a stay in October 2012
We stayed 5 nights in this historic, beautifully maintained home. Our host angelo was welcoming and helpful guiding us to local restaurants, wineries and sightseeing locations.
The price was extremely reasonable and altho Roatto is tiny (just a corner store) the grocery is a close drive and we found a market in nearby cities nearly everyday.
The grounds were gorgeous and we enjoyed enough warm weather to dine out side one afternoon and enjoy the view of the mountains from this hilltop home. We also took advantage of the BBQ and the bikes provided even though it was early October.
The wine tasting in the region was wonderful and we found a local woman who spoke English and acted as our guide for a day taking us to places we never would have found on our own and introducing us to Barolo and Barbaresco wines of the region. Each day we kept busy exploring the area but didn't put more than 100 miles on our cars. So much to see nearby! We had planned to go into Turin and never did until we had to catch our plane out.
I highly recommend the Professor's home to families or groups wanting to stay together but enjoy the privacy of your own bedroom, updated bathrooms and a marvelous dining setup. The furnishings are magnificent - a collectors dream. -

Left on 11/12/2012 for a stay in September 2012
My husband and 11 year old son stayed in the Professor's Home for 10 nights in late September 2012.
The house was amazing - fully of family heritage and mementos, whilst still being very practically fitted out and comfortably furnished. The kitchen is really well set up and reflects the fact that the family still use the house for holidays etc - there is nothing that you need that is not there somewhere. The bedrooms are very comfortable and spacious and the bathrooms are modern and very clean. The whole house is meticulously maintained.
The grounds of the house are lovely with a vegetable garden, grapes vines and orchard. We spent many afternoons relaxing in the yard enjoying the views and the sunset. It is a very quite and peaceful location.
The town of Roatto itself is very small - there is one small shop, where a small range but large quantity of grocery items are sold. The shop owners also make their own salami and other meat products which was delicious. The owners are very friendly and helpful.
Closest town is Villafranca D'Asti which is about 10 minutes drive away. There is a full size grocery store there where all needs can be met, as well as some restaurants and bars (coffee) and a post office. This town also has a train station from where it is an easy trip into Turin.
I would highly recommend staying at the Professor's house. Angelo, the owner, is extremely helpful and very well organised. He gave us great recommendations of things to do and places to eat in the local area. He is a kind and generous host and we felt priveleged to spend time in his family home. We hope to visit again sometime. -

Left on 10/22/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Our 2 families stayed at this house for 5 nights at the end of august 2012. We loved it and would strongly recommend it for people who like to visit places "at their own pace". House itself is a perfect combination of the old but very well maintained charm (furniture, interior, and cellar) and modern amenities (all new bathrooms and well stocked kitchen). The location worked very well for us as well - we've been able to stroll around Torino, spend a day on the beach, shop at the market in asti and of course tour vineyards in alba and taste local wines! The only regret we had is that we did not have at least one extra day to just sit around the pool, drink wine, look at the bountiful scenery and do absolutely nothing. Please plan accordingly - we hope we'll be able to do it next time around.

Left on 03/04/2011 for a stay in June 2010
We really enjoyed our stay in angelo's home set on the edge of the village. Angelo's welcome pack of food and wine was most welcome after our journey. The house was more than we expected and well equipped and had a very homely feel. It was wonderful to wake up and see the snow covered alps from the bedroom window and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. The house has a huge garden of about 6 acres with lots of fruit trees and hazel nut trees so it was easy to relax under a tree and enjoy a book. The village was a minute's walk away and 50 metres down the road was a very friendly family run local shop/butcher that sold just about everything. We had fun with our basic Italian which seemed to get us by with good humour. Also it was only a short stroll to the next village was a bar and small restaurant for local lunchtime meals. Another find was a few minutes drive away called Crotin 1897 which is an agritourism winery and restaurant run by a lovely family. We enjoyed our trips around the area and day trips to the northern Lakes and alps. So much to do, the wonderful market at asti, the fabulous regional food including the 'Fritto Misto', the little hilltop villages and festivals, wineries, beautiful castles and churches everywhere. Angelo and his lovely family were great hosts and couldn't do enough to make our stay enjoyable. Angelo lives in asti and wasn't far away to deal with our requests and the friendly locals in the village were always happy to have a chat to. Angelo had great tips and advice not found in tourists books so we really started to find all the little treasures of this part of Italy. Angelo even established a huge vegetable patch for us so we never ran out of tomatoes, zucchinis and salad goodies. When it became warmer the pool was set up near the BBQ so a meal and swim 'al fresco' was the thing to do. We had a great holiday which we will always treasure. We can highly recommend angelo's home and will book with him for future holidays.
