A wonderfully clean, quiet and modern apartment in a historical
My husband and I have just returned home from spending five days in the al Portoncino apartment and we can't imagine a more wonderful way to visit Rome. The apartment is in a 16th century building but it has been completely renovated to make a very charming and a very modern apartment that that is fully-equipped: a very clean and quiet place in which to relax after a day of sightseeing. We loved being in Trastevere, a historical section of the city that is full of wonderful restaurants, people and music, even in November. Most of the main tourist attractions are within walking distance and public transportation is close. However, what makes al Portoncino even more wonderful is the exceptional welcome that the owners, Frederica and Franco, gave us. They are simply fantastic. They were there to meet us and they took the time to show us how everything worked in the apartment and to answer all our questions. Franco has prepared maps to show exactly where things are: buses, Atms, grocery stores, local restaurants, and possible sight-seeing itineraries. We have been to Rome several times but thanks to Frederica and Franco this was, by far, our best experience. We only hope that some day we will have the opportunity to return to al Portoncino.

Totally enjoyable - wonderful to come home to.
We stayed in this wonderful apartment in September. We had never been to Italy before and were delighted with the accommodation, the neighbourhood, and the Roman people. Federica and Franco were very warm hosts and anxious to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. The apartment is very clean and comfortable. After sight-seeing all day we were happy to come "home", put our feet up with a nice bottle of Italian wine and discuss the discoveries of the day. Thank you Federica and Franco for our wonderful memories!

I'd Return to this apartment in a Heartbeat!
The 92 or so, excellent ratings of this apartment, tell you all you need to know! Very warmly greeted by Federica & Franco, this 1st floor apartment was clean, spacious, cozy, quiet and in the perfect location. I own vacation rentals myself on Flipkey and I'd be proud to have this property in my portfolio. My highest recommendation.

Perfect location in Trastevere.
A beautiful and well equipped apartment in the heart of Trastevere. A perfect location. Walking distance to most of the historical monuments in Rome.
Federica and Franco were wonderful. They warmly greeted us on arrival and provided us with maps of historical sights, restaurants, supermarkets etc. They also organised taxis for us.
The apartment is quite spacious and very clean. We really enjoyed our stay in Trastevere. Grazie mille Federica and Franco.
Response from Federica and Franco - 10/15/2013
Thank you! It was really nice meeting you and your lovely daughter. We hope you will come back one day soon. Australia is no longer that far away with all the many friends we are making! All the best F&F

Perfect location, close to public transportation and walking distance to all Rome sights, markets, shopping etc. Frederica and Franco were there to greet us when we arrived and had us nestled in with restaurants, walking tours and neighbourhood delights. The apartment is spacious and fully equipped as advertised. Trastevere is a lively area in the evening but the apartment was very quiet. We would recommend this apartment to everyone.
Response from Federica and Franco - 09/25/2013
Dear Bill and Eileen, thank you very much for your nice review.
We wish you all the best and we hope you will come back one day soon.

A Perfect Beginning!
Our first night in Italy was wonderful as we were welcomed so warmly by Federica. After such a long journey it was so lovely to have a friendly face and such a charming apartment to settle in for the night with our family of four. We stayed three nights and absolutely loved the apartment and the neighborhood in Trastevere. The apartment was perfectly situated so we could walk everywhere we wanted to go. We were especially appreciative of special touches, such as the use of a cell phone, sightseeing routes and maps and a personal lesson in how to make Italian coffee! Our daughters slept in the trundle beds in the living room, which was fine for us and them, but privacy would be a challenge if sharing the apartment with non-family members. We highly recommend this apartment for couples and small families. We hope to return someday for more exploration in Rome. Thank you Federica and Franco for your kindness and hospitality!

Perfect little flat in great location
This is ideal for anyone wanting a peaceful, well equiped place to stay around the corner from the beauty, history and energy that is Trastavere.
A perfect location for a short or long stay in Rome.
Amasingly helpful owners who live nearby.
The only downside is the distance from Termini station.
Response from Federica and Franco - 08/05/2013
thanks very much for your nice comment! In fact, in a big city you cannot be close to everything. In this respect, we prefer to be closer to historical, marvellous sights instead than the railway station.
We look forward to having you back soon, also for a short weekend.
All the best to everybody! ciao! F&F
We had an extraordinary stay at the apartment. Our family of four - mom, dad, and two kids loved this rental. Summer in Rome can be very warm and a bit crowded. It was wonderful to come back to this beautiful, tranquil space at the end of the day. The apartment was very well equipped and in a fantastic neighborhood. Federica and Franco were simply perfect. From the time we inquired to arrival to check out - a great experience. We asked for an early check in which they were able to do and they met us and took us for coffee while the apartment was being cleaned. They spent time to explain the area, where to go, highlights. They were amazing and worked hard to make every detail the best. We so appreciate their attention to detail and their hospitality. Thank you F and F!!!
We have stayed in a number of vacation rentals across Europe and always had a good experience. However, dealing with Federica and Franco was truly exceptional! And the apartment was just beautiful.
Response from Federica and Franco - 08/05/2013
Tessa and family,
how nice of you to share your "truly exceptional" experience with other travellers! We can be so because we are lucky enough to host special people like you! We are the ones to thank you for loving our apartment as much as we do, and for choosing to stay at our property.
Looking forward to having you back soon, all the best!

Gem In The Heart Of Trastevere!
Federica and Franco are remarkable and attentive hosts, matched only by their gem of an apartment in the very heart of Trastevere.
After a long hot day sightseeing the sights of Rome, we returned along narrow cobbled streets lined with medieval buildings and shops, in blissful retreat to our cool and cozy apartment. Tourists and Romans alike seek the great ambiance and dining of Trastevere, and it is all just steps away from the apartment.
As has been described, the apartment is well furnished, with a special focus on amenities a visitor to Rome would find essential such as maps with information on shops, recommended restaurants, transit, nearby markets, scenic walks, etc.
Federica and Franco not only make the booking process very easy, they also sent us wonderfully useful information prior to our arrival in Rome. Overall, our already high expectations were exceeded by Federica and Franco's hospitality and ideal apartment. We hope to have the good fortune to stay again when we return to Rome.
Response from Federica and Franco - 08/05/2013
we also hope to have the good fortune to continue to have guests as lovely as you! We are looking forward to seeing you again in Rome, come back soon!

Fantastic, faultless and beautifully maintained apartment in a p
We have just returned after spending eight days in this superb apartment. It is ideally situated for seeing all the sights of Rome - we walked everywhere but public transport is near by. The owners arranged a taxi to pick us up from the airport - would definitely recommend unless you know Rome - that took us straight to the apartment where Frederica was waiting to welcome us. The apartment is located on the quiet, traditional Trastevere street away from the crowds. It has been thoughtfully equipped, clean and very cosy - the wifi and computer an added bonus. There are plenty of restaurants and bars close by to chose from, we ate out most of the time but the kitchen has everything you could want. The owners Frederica and Franco are a delightful couple who take great pride in making sure their guests are comfortable and happy - rare these days and I would have no hesitation in recommending this apartment. The glowing reviews say it all. Ciao and thanks again Frederica and Franco, we hope to see you again.
Response from Federica and Franco - 06/07/2013
Dear Sue and Bruce,
thank you!!! it was really nice meeting you and having the chance to know each other better. We are sure we will see again soon, what a great encounter! All the best F&F

A wonderful apartment which spoilt us for all other rentals.
Federica and Franco were wonderfully helpful and attentive to us during the intitial booking process, and ensured that our check-in, introduction to the apartment's facilities, and orientation of the local area were all undertaken in a very personal and helpful way.
The apartment was extremely well appointed with laundry facilities, dishwasher, wifi, and a host of other appliances which made our stay as a family easy and very homely. The abundance of crockery and cutlery in particular meant that there was never a shortage come meal time, unlike most other apartments we used in other cities during our tour through Italy.
The Trastevere district was wonderfully quaint, with pedestrian access limited to many of the streets. A great range of restaurants, bars, shops, etc., all within walking distance of the apartment, whilst tram and bus stops were only a short walk from the apartment as well.
We cannot speak highly enough of our experience with the apartment, with the owners, and the Trastevere area itself. Our experience here unfortunately was at the beginning of our Italian leg and not at the end, and we constantly compared each successive apartment we stayed in to this one. They fell short of raching the same standard as Federica and Franco's apartment. Would highly recommend this rental to anyone.
Response from Federica and Franco - 05/24/2013
you made us blush! thanks very much for such nice words! we try our best, every time, with every guest. But we have to say that we are also very lucky to have such nice guests as you and your family! Come back again! All the best

A great home in Trastevere
We spent two weeks (late april and early May) in this very comfortable, charming, and conveniently located apartment. Frederica and Franco are exceptional hosts, welcoming us warmly (Frederica found our cab wandering the streets looking for the address!) and responding immediately to a minor problem with the hot water a day or so after our arrival. Franco has assembled great guides to everything we might need to find in the neighborhood (groceries, Atms, restaurants, coffee bars, gelato shops, etc.) They were available when needed and even accompanied us on a wonderful walking tour in Trastevere. We truly feel we have new friends in Trastevere.
We are an elder couple and had no problem with the stairs to the first floor apartment. One adult daughter with us the first two days and another for a week following that. The apartment easily accommodate three of us. As there are so many wonderful restaurants nearby, we did not cook in the apartment, but did stock breakfast items and made coffee with the Italian pots provided. Everything was provided to make this a comfortable and stress-free home base. We were near public transportation, but also enjoyed walking to Campo de Fiori and exploring Trastevere. We even walked back from the Borghese Gardens one day and another day from the main train station (Termini), so this location really makes all of central Rome accessible via public transit or walking.
We truly enjoyed our entire stay and felt totally "at home" for our two weeks in al Portoncino.
Response from Federica and Franco - 05/24/2013
Dear Jeane and Larry,
It was great having you here! we really look forward to seeing you again. Best wishes to you and the girls! F&F
Fantastic three days in Trastevere
This property is owned and managed by wonderful hosts who thought of everything to make our stay perfect. It is in a fantastic, quiet location in a busy, vibrant part of Rome, close to all the major sights in Rome by bus or, if you're fit and can cope with cobblestoned streets, by walking. From the personalised check-in to the wonderfully detailed travel tips and advice about Rome and the Trastevere area, all of our needs were looked after. We had a wonderful stay and thoroughly enjoyed our time in this really comfortable and well appointed apartment.
Response from Federica and Franco - 05/13/2013
We are happy that you liked the apartment, we look forward to hosting you again one day soon! All the best
Federica and Franco
Federica and Franco have gone well above and beyond all our expectations with their lovely apartment. It was just the quiet respite we needed after a day of touring in Rome. The apartment has everything you would ever want for your stay, including wonderful jazz CDs in the charming living room. It is the perfect place to stay for a couple, or perhaps a couple and a small child. The absolute crowning touch, however, was the evening ride to the Janiculum hill courtsey of Federica and Franco. We enjoyed our 6 night stay and highly recommend this apartment.
Response from Federica and Franco - 04/21/2013
Dear Susan and Ward,
thanks for your kind words! indeed, we confirm how lucky we are in having people like you staying at our apartment! We need the neighbourhood to be appreciated by people that respect its authenticity, and make it less and less "for tourist only". We hope that our small but coherent action against wild commercial interests will resonate around us and make the holiday-rental business a way to change this trend. Come back soon!!!
A wonderful place to stay
This cute apartment is perfectly located, comfortably furnished and has a lovely atmosphere. The apartment is small but has everything we needed for a thoroughly enjoyable five night stay with our baby son. Federica and Franco are very welcoming and charming hosts.
Response from Federica and Franco - 04/16/2013
Grazie!!! we enjoyed having you here, come back again soon!
Don't hesitate or you might miss out!
We had the great pleasure of meeting Franco and Federica and staying in their super comfortable, homey, flat. We loved the location- absolutely perfect for our first visit to Rome. We slept very well! Everything was thought of, from the well-equipped kitchen to the new computer to use and the great wi-fi. I can't say enough about what lovely kind people Franco and Federica are. They really went well-beyond what we ever expected in making us feel welcome and showing us their great city. They are so professional and prompt when we were setting everything up, just a dream to work with. They were never intrusive when we were there but they were available when we needed them (and I felt very needy). They even have phone numbers programmed in the phone for them and for calling a cab! They arranged our pickup at the airport and our ride to the train station. They really provide the services a hotel does- very unusual in our experience with renting short term abroad.
In short- you can't go wrong. The apartment size is best for one couple, or a couple and a young child.
Thank you Federica and Franco!!

Dear Courtney and Tom,
it was a real pleasure to host you in our apartment, and we are glad that you appreciated our service and discrete assistance. We look forward to seeing you again - perhaps in the South where you come from and where we are thinking of spending a nice holiday one day soon. Thanks also for the nice book you brought - it was such a lovely thought to know each other better and to communicate reciprocal hospitality. What a nice encounter! Come back soon, all the best! Perfection is possible!
Don't think twice, book Federica and Franco's flat in Trastevere - now! I spent 2 weeks there in early March and hated to leave. It is elegant, quiet, spotless, and in an ideal neighborhood, close to everything you want to see and do as a tourist, and yet opening the door to the building on atmospheric Vicolo del Leopardo you feel as if you really have come home. Federica and Franco have thought of everything for your comfort, and are charming and discrete hosts. I will be back!
Response from Federica and Franco - 03/28/2013
Grazie mille!!! we are moved! it was great having you here! please do come back again soon - we promise, no more popes for a while! you have to see the Sistine chapel, that will make you come back, definitely.
Hope you are having fun in Sicily now, happy Easter! F&F
Clean, comfortable apartment in the heart of Trastevere.
I loved being on a one-block cobblestoned street with laundry hanging above, one that is featured on a postcard. The apartment is walking distance to nearly all of the major sites or easy walking distance to public transportation. Trastevere is like a small town within the big city of Rome, full of cafes, small restaurants and shops, and the very old church of Santa Maria in Trastevere with beautiful mosaics. Federica and Franco were amazing landlords, friendly, helpful, responsible, and conscientious. They really went above and beyond the call of duty and I felt taken care of very well. They arranged transport for me from and to the airport, something I recommend. I had to leave at 5:00 in the morning and the driver was not only helpful at that hour of the morning, but very pleasant! The apartment itself is small, but very clean and comfortable. The bed was almost too comfortable! It was so convenient having a computer with internet, a TV (good for practicing my Italian listening skills), a telephone, a washing machine, even a nightlight in the bathroom. I wish the apartment had more natural light, but I did not go to Rome to stay inside and I would not hesitate to stay there again. For me the location was perfect and I have never had better landlords than Federica and Franco!
Response from Federica and Franco - 03/11/2013
Dearest, thank you so much for your kind words! we feel very honoured of having gained such a primacy as best landlords. We really hope that this feeling will be shared by many other guests that will come to stay at our apartment in the future. We love having such nice people like you at our own home, and please do come to visit us again soon. We miss you!
Comfortable, quiet and close to all the action.
The apartment is spacious and comfortable and included a phone and desk top computer which were very handy. Federica and Franco arranged a pickup at the airport and were at the front door to greet us. We liked the fact that it was located close to all the restaurants and shops in Trastevere so there were a lot of choices as to where to eat. It was also close to a grocery store.
The tram stop to cross the Tiber into the historic centre was a short walk away. Across the river the tram ended beside bus stops that easily connected us to the Vatican and various subway stops if we didn't want to walk.
We met with Federica and Franco one evening and they drove us up to the Janiculum Hill to see the view of Rome at night. They were a phone call or e-mail away if we needed anything. They answered all our e-mails promptly and were a real pleasure to deal with.
Response from Federica and Franco - 01/02/2013
Dear Olga and Ken,
we are happy that you enjoyed your stay at our apartment. It was a pleasure meeting you, and we thank you once again for choosing us! Ciao! Federica and Franco

Fantastic Stay in a Great Location
Don't hesitate on this one. Fredrica and Franco have thought of everything. From arranging transport from the airport to mapping out the whole neighborhood and so much more, we were completely comforatble in this lovely apartment. We will return when in Rome.

John and Arline Fazzaro
The apartment in Trastevere was just what we were looking for. Having stayed in this area before, we loved the convenient location of the apartment to all of Rome and its attractions without the hassle of Rome center. It was fully equipped for the needs of our stay. The apartment is near many restaurants and cafes and only a short distance from the piazza of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Federica could not have been more accomodating in our needs especially, when we learned of Hurrican Sandy affecting our home in the us. We will happily return to this lovely apartment and its owners on future visits.
Response from Federica and Franco - 11/09/2012
John and Arline, thank you so much for your nice words! We will be happy to host you again sometime soon in the future! Take care, and thanks again for choosing to stay at our apartment! With many best wishes

Excellent experience from first email through departure
We stayed 9 days and the property was in a perfect location for enjoying Rome. Incredibly clean and the owners, Federica and Franco, equipped the property with everything necessary to enjoy the stay. They are incredibly helpful and are concerned with making sure their guests enjoy their visit. When checking in they explain everything in the property and about the neighborhood and they made recommendations on things to do. They are always only a phone call away and respond promptly to emails. Federica even walked me to the laundry and spoke to the employee to make sure my shirts would be available the next day, as I don't speak Italian. The laundry (one minute away) also turns out to be a great place to dry clothes after you use the washer inside the apartment. The property is quiet and around the corner from an active area with many restaurants and small shops. Also two minutes from Santa Maria church that is easy to walk by, but going inside should not be missed as it is magnificent and an important church. If you want to locate the apartment, just find where all the tourists stop to take photos of the alley where laundry is hanging outside high between buildings - you walk through that alley to the right and come upon the building (where more laundry may be hanging outside). You're part of a neighborhood and you'll be so happy you didn't book a hotel. Everything about the property and the owners earn Five Stars. We are so glad we stayed there and look forward to a return visit. Grazie Federica and Franco!
Response from Federica and Franco - 10/28/2012
Dear Bob and Betty, thanks very much for your kind words! you were also exceptionally amazing guests from the very beginning of getting in touch with us, gentle and enthusiastic in all your enquiries. We look forward to having you back here again soon! thanks again for choosing to stay with us, all the best!!!
Wonderful home base to get a taste of living like a local in Rom
We greatly enjoyed our 11 day stay in Federica and Franco's apartment. From the very start, we feel that we could not have made a better decision.
Initial communication was excellent. Federica promptly responded to all of our questions, and was able to accommodate our requests with ease. Federica and Franco are such warm and personable people, meeting them upon our arrival at the apartment felt like a real event. They patiently oriented us to the neighborhood as well as the apartment. Thank you Franco for your lovely customized maps!
The apartment is eclectic and very well supplied, with special consideration of a traveler's needs. I particularly appreciated the Bialetti Moka, coffee and sugar that was all ready to go our first morning.
The apartment is truly spotless, which really can't be said about many places; on this point we are very picky, and we were truly impressed. The towels, mattress, pillows and bed linens were very good, and the aC worked great as did the hot water. Storage options for our things was excellent. The WiFi was fast and dependable. The unit is altogether comfortable, safe and quiet on the second story of an historic building.
Trastevere is a wonderful neighborhood to call home. It is not overwhelmed with tourists; staying here you have the opportunity to taste life as a local. There are loads of restaurant options within easy walking distance, and upon crossing either the nearby Sisto or Garibaldi bridges, you have loads more to explore. Also, with american schools nearby, communication in English was never a problem, although attempts to speak Italian were much appreciated.
We look forward to our return!
Response from Federica and Franco - 10/08/2012
we also look forward to your return. Be it soon! You were such marvellous guests! Arrivederci presto!
Federica & Franco
Frederica and Franco and their gorgeous apartment were just perfect! A fantastic find in a fantastic neighborhood in Rome! The apartment sits in the most charming part of Trastevere among winding alleys and countless cafes and restaurants and minutes from Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere where the city comes alive, especially in the evenings!
The apartment is indeed small but furnished beautifully with everything you'll need! Nothing at all shabby here. Frederica and Franco were the perfect hosts and have spent a lot of energy helping us immediately feel at home in their neighborhood. They are so thoughtful to provide maps of nearby amenities and restaurants as well as best walks in the area. Wifi and computer on premises are great!
Response from Federica and Franco - 09/14/2012
Dear David, thank you very much for you kind words! It was a great pleasure to host you in our lovely apartment and we look forward to more of such occasions. All the best to you and you wonderful family. Arrivederci!!!!
Top of the Line
Federica and Franco's apartment was definitely a 5-star accommodation. I am an honest critic of my surroundings and stay in mostly high-end hotels and apartments. I rarely give 5-stars to anything.
First, F and F arranged for a very responsible car service to pick us up from the airport -- at Hertz. We were 45 minutes late, didn't call ahead to report our delay, and the driver waited for us. No problem. Base on prior experiences this trip, I can't say another driver would have done the same.
When we arrived in Trastevere, F and F were there to meet us. They were all smiles and nice as can be. The apartment was in a fabulous neighborhood -- hip, artsy, great restaurants, a daily produce market, stores and lots of ancient character -- and central to all sights. It was a hearty walk to the Vatican, Coliseum, Palatine Hill, Trevi Fountain, and other important venues. We easily traversed the city on foot with a teen and tween. If you don't like to walk, F and F have prepared a map of public transportation and taxi stands. They have also prepared laminated maps of significant sights, good restaurants (economical and high end), bakeries, Atms and the like. We used these maps and their referrals many times.
Regarding the apartment, it is nicely furnished and well-maintained. It is not a large one-bedroom (although I imagine a standard one-bedroom in an ancient building.) We were a family of four and found it extremely manageable. The kitchen appliances were plentiful, F and F provided plenty of towels, and the sleeper sofa and master bed were quite comfortable. There is lots of closet space and drawers. The kitchen and bathroom are small but that didn't bother us one bit. The apartment never felt crowded. Although we were in a neighborhood with an active night life, we never heard noise. I am an extremely light sleeper.
This is a fabulous place to settle for a magical vacation in one of my favorite cities. Enjoy.
Response from Federica and Franco - 09/01/2012
Thanks a lot, Lisa, for this great review!!! We feel very honoured to have been rewarded this much by such a critical customer, and we thank you very much for being so straightforward. We will visit NY soon and will not hesitate to get in touch with you again. It was a pleasure to have you and your lovely family at ours, and it makes us very happy to know that you all have enjoyed the apartment and Trastevere very much! All the best and see you soon! Perfect place to stay in Rome
My new husband and I stayed in this lovely apartment for a week whilst on our honeymoon (13/08/12 - 20/08/12). Unfortunatley Federico and Franco were on holidays while we were there however they made themselves available to assist us at all times via email or phone. We felt very looked after by them, despite them not being in Rome and they even arranged for a friend to meet us at the apartment to show us how everything worked and to give us recommendations on where to eat.
The apartment itself is not very large but was so comfortable and the decor was beautiful. The kitchen had everything that you could need. We never had any troubles or discomfort during our stay.
We loved the Trastevere area so much. It is within walking distance to all of the Rome sights, but yet very small, lively and bright neighborhood. The old streets are full of life and interesting shops and restaurants. In the evening Trastevere becomes crowded with both tourists and local people, who come over the river for a drink or dinner but the apartment remained quiet, and we were never disturbed by any noise.
It was very hot while we were there, and we were so glad to be able to come back to such a cool home at the end of a long hot day sightseeing.
At the end of our stay Federica and Franco met us and took us out for coffee at one of the local bars. This was a nice touch to the end of the holiday and it was so nice to meet them - they are both lovely people.
We had an afternoon flight on our return from Rome, and Federica and Franco were so kind to take the luggage to their own flat nearby, and arrange for a taxi to pick us up from their flat and take us straight to the airport. It is not common to see someone so friendly and helpful!
I definitely recommend this apartment to a couple who want to taste a flavor of the beautiful Trastevere area and still be very close to the historical sites in Rome. It was absolutely perfect and we couldnt have asked for more.
Response from Federica and Franco - 09/01/2012
it was so nice to have such a new married couple choosing to stay at our apartment for their honeymoon. Indeed our apartment offers a very romantic atmosphere. We hope it will become a nice spot where to come back and celebrate your many anniversaries! With many best wishes

'A Dream Holiday'
Al Portoncino would have to be the best accommodation and service we have experienced during our many years of travel. From our first inquiry, through to our arrival at this amazing apartment,we could not have asked for more.Federica and Franco were such fantastic hosts. Our many queries were answered promptly, and the extra information and maps they provided regarding where to eat, places to see etc was invaluable. They also arranged transport to the airport for us which was prompt and efficient. The apartment itself was everything and more.Beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean, and with everything you could possibly need including airconditioning, washing machine, wifi,a well appointed kitchen, comfortable bed, plenty of wardrobe space, nothing was forgotten. This was our first time staying in Trastevere, and we weren't disappointed, the location was perfect. The area was alive and bustling, with an endless choice for meals, coffee, shopping, entertainment or just enjoying the wonderful atmosphere. It's close proximity to the well known attractions is a bonus, it was a joy returning to our little slice of heaven each night after a long day exploring. Federica and Franco, you made our stay and our special anniversary something we will remember always. We are so looking forward to returning next year. Thank you for being such gracious hosts. Response from Federica and Franco - 08/19/2012

Trust me !!
Do you know how cool it is to have a car waiting for you when you get off the plane after a long flight and whisk you off to your apartment in the coolest neighborhood in Rome . Then you meet Federica or Franco, as we did, and you immediately know you booked the right place ! but wait ... then you go in and voilà Home sweet Home in Rome or should I say Trastevere. This is the neighborhood you want to be in,and the apartment is in a perfect area inside that neighborhood. Coming back from 5 weeks in Italy , it gave us time to visit part of Italy the slow travel way , there are things we would have done differently and others the exact same way and al Portoncino is # 1 to do when we go back . We are in our fifties and in great shape and this place allowed us to walk everywhere I mean to all the tourist sites .It is quiet, trendy, and beautiful. The apartment is also very quiet and beautiful, good bed, everything you need in the kitchen, nice sitting area to unwind, many guide books available, desk computer etc.So from one traveler to another ... trust me on this one, book it ! and go and stay there longer than you planed, otherwise you will regret it .. trust me .
Response from Federica and Franco - 08/03/2012
Grazie!!! Trust us: you have been excellent guests as well!!! See you again soon! Federica and Franco
This apartment is an excellent place to stay when visiting Rome. The owners, Federica and Franco, are very welcoming, friendly and helpful - the apartment is extremely well equipped for self catering and very comfortable. It is also very quiet inside, despite being in the heart of a lively area and it made a great place to go back to relax in after a long day sightseeing. Federica and Franco have thought of everything - internet access, guidebooks, washing machine with washing powder, clothes dryer, maps showing the nearest shops/supermarkets, recommendations for walks (we did two of Franco's well-planned walks which helped us see far more of Rome than we might have done). The apartment has a balcony where we enjoyed peaceful breakfasts. The area of Trastevere is a lovely district full of cobbled streets, churches, restaurants - it's close to the river and the whole of the centre of Rome is within walking distance. Within only a few minutes it's possible to walk up out of the city into a lovely park which has wonderful views over the whole of Rome. It's the area I would choose to stay in if I go to Rome again. Listen to Federica and Franco, they live nearby and can help with everything - I would recommend you take up their offer to arrange a taxi from the station when you first arrive - we thought we could do it all ourselves and were grossly overcharged!! Beware! We had a fantastic 3 nights and were sad to leave.
Response from Federica and Franco - 08/01/2012
Grazie Julie!!! you were fabulous too! come back soon!
A beautiful apartment in a fantastic location.
My family ( including 23 and 21 year old daughters) stayed in this lovely apartment for a week. Federico and Franco were on holidays while we were there...however, they made themselves available to assist us whenever we had a need via email or phone. We felt very supported by their care , despite them not being in Rome.
The apartment was so comfortable in every way and beautifully decorated. The kitchen had everything that we could possibly need for self catering. We appreciated all the travel books to peruse also!
It was very hot while we were there, and we were so glad to be able to come back to such a pleasant and cool home base at the end of a long hot day sightseeing. Another thing that we all loved was the area. The Trastevere was fantastic...lots of great places to eat that were very reasonably priced, with fantastic food. We would all highly reccommend this apartment.
Response from Federica and Franco - 07/26/2012
Jenny and family, thank you so much for your nice comments about our apartment. We missed meeting you, but we enjoyed talking over the phone and making you feel at home despite us not being there. Please, keep in touch!

When someone asked us what was our favorite part of the trip, we
From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, everything was perfect. The apartment is in a charming, safe location, the appointments were tasteful, and comfortable, Federica and Franco were so accommodating without being obsequious, and the neighborhood was a real highlight - full of ambiance, and Italian flavor. We appreciated some of the extras such as the numerous books on Rome, wifi availability, and having a cleaning lady come halfway through our 11-day stay to change linens and clean. We used the driver service for pickup and return to the airport, which also made our trip smooth, otherwise we walked and used public transportation everywhere, even for our excursions. We ate one meal out per day and it was usually in a restaurant in Trastavere - they were all good and the ambience full of charm and fun. We have rented apts before on vacations in the USa and Paris, but never had an experience go without a hitch at all. This was it! We looked at hundreds of apts in doing our research and knew the moment we found this one that it was a good fit. We are so grateful for a wonderful vacation that exceeded all expectations.
Response from Federica and Franco - 07/17/2012
Thank you so much! We also enjoyed having you here and we are happy that you loved the apartment! We hope to have the chance to hosting you again in our lovely apartment one day soon :)
Beautiful Oasis and Ideal Location
Federica and Franco welcomed us to the apartment and gave us so many helpful tips about things to do and see during our stay. They are such a lovely couple who went out of their way to make us feel at home. Their apartment was spotless and well appointed in every aspect. The kitchen was extremely well supplied and made cooking meals very enjoyable. Federica and Franco supplied us with maps detailing panoramic walks in Rome, local restaurants, shopping areas and many important landmarks. They also had an excellent supply of english books about Rome for us to use. The apartment had a computer with great internet access and this was a hit with children and adults alike. The apartment location in Trastevere is excellent since it is on a very quiet street, is within walking distance to many attractions, and has great restaurants, shops and cafes nearby. We loved our time at their apartment and recommend it most highly. Thank-you Federica and Franco - Rome was an amazing highlight of our trip.
Response from Federica and Franco - 06/28/2012
Thank you so much! we were delighted to have you at our apartment! have great fun in the rest of Europe!
We loved this place!
This apartment was one of the highlights of our trip. Federica and Franco arranged for a car to pick us up and met us at the apartment to show us how to use the cool espresso maker and the maps of the city. It was great having internet access as well. The location is perfect with restaurants, shops and gelato close by. We walked to all the sights in Rome. On our first night in Rome, we sat at the restaurant just down the alley and I remember thinking that it was exactly everything I had hoped Rome would be. At the end of our stay, Federica and Franco helped us get a cab to the train station. Their kindness and hospitality was one of the best parts of our trip!!
Response from Federica and Franco - 06/28/2012
Dearest, it was so lovely to meet you and introduce you to the marvellous atmosphere of Trastevere. We are happy that you enjoyed it! this is just the beginning, we are sure that you will return one day soonish. All the best to you all and looking forward to having you back here!

Lovely apartment, lovely people, perfect location!
What's left to be said that hasn't been said by others! Al Portoncino is a lovely, well appointed and wonderfully located apartment in Trastevere. While modest, it has all you really need (except maybe a clock in the bedroom). The location is stellar -- in the heart of Trastevere but on a quiet street. Most everything is within walking distance (though sometimes a healthy walk). The kitchen is well appointed and supplied with whatever you'd need (are you really gonna cook?). The bed, while quite firm, is perfectly comfortable. The only caveat is that the shower is the size of a phone booth, but you'll manage.
Both Federica and Franco are charming, helpful and they go out of their way to make your stay as memorable as possible. They are approachable and always make themselves available to assist you.
A very positive experience and a very strong recommendation!
Response from Federica and Franco - 05/31/2012
Thanks Les and Lyn! it was such a pleasure to meet you and we do hope to see you again in the future! Lots of love to you both Federica and Franco

Imagine your own balconied oasis just footsteps from some of the best restaurants, historic sights and vibrant night scene. This apartment was remarkably quiet given how close we were to everything.
Federica and Franco graciously greeted us and gave us a tour of the apartment upon arrival. They provided custom-made maps with walking, restaurant and market recommendations so you truly could live as the locals do.
The apartment itself is very well-appointed with a kitchen, washer, and computer for use. There's a bookshelf filled with specialty books about Trastevere and Rome. The lovely little balcony was a nice place to both start your morning and end your day, and everything you needed was close by. If you want to cook, there's a wonderful local market within a ten minute walk where you can buy fresh oranges, strawberries and seasonal vegetables. There are butchers, bakers, pasta-makers, wine, and cheese shops all within a few minutes of the apartment.
We did a lot of walking while in Rome, and apart from Termini station and Villa Borghese, everything was easily within a 30 minute walk. The apartment is also nearby several bus stops and a 20 minute walk to the cab stand. A primary consideration for choosing Trastevere for this trip was easy access to all that Rome has to offer with our own space away from the usual tourist crowds. This definitely met and exceeded our needs.
I have stayed at a few properties found via Flipkey, and I can honestly say that everything I read about both the apartment and the gracious hospitality of Federica and Franco are absolutely true. Now that I've experienced the freedom and offerings of having my very own vacation apartment, I'll never go back to staying at a hotel.
Lots of visitors toss coins in the Trevi Fountain to ensure a return trip to Rome. My additional wish was to return to Rome and to once again stay in this lovely apartment.
Response from Federica and Franco - 05/20/2012
thanks Sarah and Trevor! it was such a pleasure to meet you, and we look forward to having you back here very soon!
The only place I'd stay in Rome
This was my second time in al Portoncino - I was here first in November last year - and it was as great this time as before. Really well situated, excellently equipped and the only place I would stay in Rome now that I have found it.
Response from Federica and Franco - 05/17/2012
Dear David, thank you so much for returning to our apartment! it was a real pleasure to host you again and meet your parents. We are so happy that this lovely apartment is attracting such nice people!

A very comfortable, very quiet, true 1 bedroom apartment in the
We would recommend Federica and Franco as hosts and their apartment to anybody coming to Rome. It's well appointed (linens, well-stocked kitchen, and washing machine (no dryer, as usual in Europe), the owners obviously take pride in the property, and it is perfectly located for seeing the center of Rome. Circus Maximus, for instance, is only a 15 minute walk over a choice of bridges. There were 3 of us (one child) and we had plenty of space and very comfortable beds. Amazing, it was nearly silent, although it's within 100 yards of the main piazza in Trastevere. We truly have nothing negative to say about our recent stay, including the $$, which is very fair.
Overall fantastic apartment - very comfortable, super clean and
We've just had a wonderful stay in this lovely apartment. Franco met us on arrival and was so welcoming and helpful and Federica stayed in touch throughout our stay to check all was ok. We loved the comfortable beds, the balcony for drinking wine in the evening and everything was so clean. It was the perfect location as we were able to walk to most places, even with very small children, or easily find a bus or taxi when tired. We also particularly welcomed the internet, which we were able to use whenever we needed to. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Thank you!
Great week in Rome!!
This apartment was fantastic. We stayed there for 5 nights with our toddler and there was plenty of room. All the facilities you could need in an apartment. Great location for exploring Rome. The service from Franco and Federica was outstanding - anything we needed we could ring or email them and they were very quick in helping us with whatever we needed. Would definitely stay here again.
Amazing place to stay!
This was our last stop in a month trip of europe, and this by far was the best place we stayed at. Such an amazing location in the lovely neighbourhood of trastevere, it is so quiet when in the apartment but you go outside and there are so many places to have a drink or some dinner at really good prices. the owners are honestly some of the nicest people i have ever met, they provide you with every bit of information that you will ever need and go out of their way to help you! If you are staying in trastevere please do not look any further stay here!! i know we will defintly be staying her again when we return! thank you for everything we loved it!!

Perfect in every Way!
We stayed and Federica and Franco's apartment in Rome for 5 nights in January, 2012. Their apartment made our first trip to Rome just perfect! The apartment is equipped with everything that you could need and they are wonderful hosts...meeting us late at night upon our arrival, suggesting close-by restaurants that would be still open and even showing us how to make traditional Italian coffee! The location of the apartment is also fantastic - we walked everywhere (luckily we had great weather) and never once caught public transport or taxis. It is in a very 'local' part of Rome, not touristy at all, and it is surrounded by very well-priced, excellent restaurants. The apartment is very clean and beautifully presented and it is so nice to come home to a place much bigger than a hotel room with all the facilites (eg. washing machine) you need. We will definitely return to stay here next time we are in Rome :)
Federica and Franco are very pleasant, responsible and helpful. We had no problems during our stay due to their caring support: as the previous writer mentioned they also provided us with all the information we would need (restaurants, markets, wine shops, and maps of walking routes they recommended), and showed us how to use everything in the apartment so we would feel at home.
it was the first time when i preferred to stay not in a hotel, but in a rented flat, because I believe this is how one can feel being a resident, not a tourist.
The apartment is very clean and charming, photos describe it all, the location is brilliant.

Fantastic apartment in Trastevere!
I don't even know where to begin! Four of us (all adults) rented Federica and Franco's apartment in Trastevere over the New Year holiday. From the beginning of our rental inquiry, they were kind, helpful and responsive. It only got better from there. Upon arrival, they greeted us with enthusiasm and charm. They provided us with all the information we would need (restaurants, markets, wine shops, and maps of walking routes they recommended), and showed us how to use everything in the apartment so we would feel at home.
The apartment itself is absolutely beautiful (and super clean) and was the perfect size for even 4 grown adults. We felt we had plenty of space, and we loved getting to cook a few meals at home--not to mention enjoying coffee on the balcony. Even the price they offered us was better than anywhere else. We were comfortable, safe, and for our 3-day stay felt like we were actual residents of Trastevere. The apartment is in a phenomenal location and we walked everywhere (we didn't take a single cab, bus, or metro).
I hope you are as lucky as we are to get to stay in such a fabulous apartment, in such a great location, with such wonderful hosts. We can't wait to go back!

Charming apartment in the heart of Rome!
We had the privilege of staying at the apartment on the third week of October 2011 as part of our honeymoon. We loved the location. It was very easy to get anywhere within Rome. The district of Trastevere was so charming, with many restaurants, shops and wonderful piazzas a short distance from the front door.
We arrived the day of an unprecedented downpour and knowing that the transit system was closed and taxis were in short supply, our lovely hosts Frederica and Franco picked us up from the train station and kindly drove us to the apartment. Both Frederica and Franco provided extremely detailed instructions and suggestions for the apartment, the neighbourhood and the city. Both Frederica and Franco's exuberance and love of Rome was infectious. We were charmed. How lovely!
The amenities of the apartment were well appointed. The bed was comfortable. The computer was super useful. Although quite small, the shower was always hot with good water pressure. The most outstanding aspect of the apartment is certainly its proximity to every attraction in Rome that we wanted to see. Over the four days that we were there, we walked everywhere (Colosseum, Spanish Steps, the Villa Borghese, Vatican City and throughout Trastevere).
Thank you Frederica and Franco for a truly wonderful opportunity in your lovely city.
Lovely apartment in a great location
I had stayed in Trastevere before, but now I wish I'd know about al Portoncino before. The apartment itself is very well appointed with all mod-cons, and a lovely kitchen. The wi-fi was a big plus as well, as it meant I could easily stay connected to the world, even while on holiday. The immediate area around al Portoncino is also excellent - very "authentic" with loads of great restaurants, bars and shops. Federica and Franco very helpfully produce maps locating all the best places to eat, as well as useful amenities like shops, Atms and so on. They also suggested walks around Rome, which would be a real plus for any first-time visitors. Franco even met us at the tram stop upon our arrival - indicative of the excellent level of service that comes with this apartment. I'm definitely coming back!

Staying at Franco and Frederica's apartment was the perfect ending to a lovely Italian vacation. The neighborhood of Trastevere is inviting with lots to see and do just by walking the streets. We were able to walk to all the sights of Rome from the apartment. Franco is an amazing host. He met us as we arrived and returned to be sure our taxi came to take us to the airport. He was very available to answer any questions and even had maps with restaurants, walking tours, etc.. all outlined for us. The apartment is beautiful, extremely clean and was very comfortable for the 3 of us. We highly recommend this rental and when we return to Rome for our next visit we will most certainly stay here.
a lovely apartment indeed!!!
Perfectly located, in the most lively area of Rome. After a day walking you have a variety of restaurants available to you. Recently renovated and fully equiped it perfectly covered the needs of a family of four. Free wifi available - kids loved playing in the computer. Federica and Franco provided us with all the information needed for a perfect stay in Rome.
superb and unforgettable
Our family had a great time in Rome. The apartment is in a lovely part of the city, quiet and extremely romantic, but at the same time in a few minutes you can reach just walking the very heart of monumental Rome. The apartment is truly beautiful, very clean, and fully equipped! There is space for children (there are even some card games to play all together) and the atmosphere is lovely and very "italian". The owners are very very friendly, helpful and nice, and they speak english fluently. Would definitely stay there again!

Just like home!
My husband and I recently spent a week in Rome and stayed in Trastevere at Federica and Franco's lovely apartment. The apartment is amazing and Federica and Franco are exceedingly gracious hosts - arranging our pick-up at the airport, making sure we were comfortably settled into the apartment, providing tips on the best places to explore, eat and see in Rome, etc. They made sure we had everything we needed to have a truly wonderful time in their city.
The apartment is also warm, cozy and spotless. It has a nice sitting area, a well equipped small kitchen and a washer, which was fantastic since we were traveling for several weeks and only carrying our backpacks.
Trastevere was also a perfect home base for our visit. It's a rich, historic neighborhood teaming with lots of local color. There were lots of great restaurants and shops to choose from and while the night life was lively, the apartment was on a very quiet street. And best of all, we could walk to all the major sites in the city. I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone visiting Rome and wouldn't hesitate to rent it again on our next visit to the city.

Great apartment in authentic Roma
We enjoyed our 3-day trip to Roma at this lovely and very well equipped apartment.
Trastevere is a charming and authentic part of Roma with narrow streets, lovely squares and typical ochre coloured buildings and houses. The location of the apartment is perfect. Situated in the heart of Trastevere in a small and quiet street with no passing traffic.
Crossing the Tiber (Tevere) after a 10 min. walk you find yourself at the "Campo de Fiori" - Square right in the middle of Roma.
Mille Grazie to Federica and Franco for the warm welcome and being there for any assistance needed.

Lovely apartment and caring landlords!
It was a great rental due to the location and the quality of the maintenance/condition of the apartment and special attention to details. Very clean and very quiet. However especially appreciated was Franco's day-to-day help, orientation, and especially as our contact with the alitalia/AF airlines who delayed delivery of our baggage for days! We were there for 5 days and the last bag arrived 10 hours before we departed Italy! Franco was incrediably helpful and patient. The apartment is really great and I believe Frederica is likely also a gem but was out of the country during our visit.
Perfect Spot in Rome
We were greeted by Franco who assisted us with transport, markets, popular tourist sites, tours, ect.
the apartment itself was located in a quiet, safe spot, close to cafes and restaurants. It was beautifully decorated, felt like being home away from home, clean, spacious for 2 people and well-equipped. some sites were walking distance whilst others we needed to catch tranport (no more than 15 minutes travel time).
we'd defintiely stay here if we were to visit Rome again.

A thoroughly authentic Italian experience
I wanted our apartment to be authentically italian and it was everything I had dreamed of. A green door leading of a narrow street along a long corridor and up spiralling stairs brought you to the apartment. It was tastefully and beautifully decorated, very well equipped, safe and secure and ideally situated within walking distance of the Tiber and all the sights of Rome. Around the corner were many cafes and restaurants frequented by the citizens of Rome and the food was fabulous. Our genial hosts Federica and Franco met us and gave us useful advice and were on hand to help out if needed. Rome was wonderful and I would love to go back to see all the sights we did not have time to visit. I would certainly return to this apartment.

For our 25th anniversary we went on our trip of a lifetime to Rome and then on a Mediterranean cruise. Our days in Trastevere were some of the most special of our trip. Close enough to all the touristy spots but tucked away where we enjoyed an escape from the crowds. Franco was there to meet us and was available for any needs that arose. The apartment is beautiful and clean. It was nice to stay and eat among the locals. Everyone should also experience this part of Rome.
Kristin, Mark and Sophia
My husband, young daughter and I stayed at this lovely apartment and had a truly wonderful experience. From the friendly and warm greeting/hospitality of Federica and Franco to the unbelievably central location. Within minutes walk you have wonderful restaurants, gelato, shops, views of the city (just a short walk up the hill) and the market of Campo de Fiori is just over the bridge. We also walked to many of the tourist attractions, but if time is an issue, the public transportation is easy and close. The apartment is lovely, well kept and very quiet. We felt that Federica and Franco went above and beyond what we ever expected to help us plan our time in Rome as well as assistance with the train when we departed. We felt at home and very relaxed. We will stay there again and highly recommend it for singles, couples or families.
Great stay in a cute part of Rome
We booked this apartment for a family of 4 (2 college aged kids).
First off, Federica and Franco were amazingly responsive. It was our first time in Rome and we were really clueless. They helped us arrange for a car to pick us up from the train station as well as drop us off at the airport. Even when I couldn't give an exact time of arrival, they were patient enough to help us arrange the car the night before.
On arrival, they were there to greet us and help us into the apartment. The apartment is very spacious and comfy for 4. The apartment had an Italian coffee maker and Federica even showed us how to make our own coffee for the mornings :) There is aC in the apartment (a must if you are visiting in July).
In terms of location.. I have to say that for my first time in Rome, it wasn't exactly what my family was looking for. It is a bit far from the sites (about a half hour to hour walk to the colosseum, spanish steps, vatican city). I would say that if you are looking for a romantic and cute spot then this is perfect. It isn't as much of a touristy spot, and there are tons of restaurants nearby. Also there is a gorgeous view only 15 minutes away with a pretty lively lounge.
In summary the apartment and the owners are amazing. If you are in Rome to hit the touristy spots, then maybe find a different place to stay. However, if you want to experience a more local feel, this apartment is perfect.
Perfect in every way
Renting this perfect apartment from charming and helpful Federica & Franco was the best decision we made in visiting Italy. We spent 5 days in wonderful Rome, and this perfect setting really made our whole trip. The apartment itself.. the neighborhood.. all ideal. We'll be back.
Home away from home
The best thing we did when planning our trip to Rome was to rent Federica and Franco's apartment. From the moment we contacted them, they were warm and helpful, giving us great advise during our planning stage. The apartment itself is perfect. The best location. Great suggestions for restaurants, markets, bakeries, and places you might need during your vacations. In the apartment you will find everything you look for. They have thought of absolutely everything to make our stay comfortable and just plain perfect. Really amazing. Hope to go back to Rome, and to Federica and Franco's apartment, soon.

This is a lovely apartment that is in one of the most interesting parts of Rome. It is easy to get around on foot and to visit other sites such as the Pantheon, Steps and the Fountain. The apartment really felt like home and was great to return to after a full day of site seeing.

Federica & Franco are wonderful hosts and the apartment is exactly as shown in the photos. Great area - you can walk to most places. Many interesting shops and places to eat right outside your door but the apartemnt is very quiet. If you stay read the interesting books on Rome in the bookcase.
Peaceful place to stay in the lively Trastevere area
We stayed at this apartment in Trastevere for 4 nights in June with our two children, 10 and 7 year old.
Federica, the owner of this apartment, welcomed us very warmly, spend some extended time with us showing around the apartment, explaining how everything works, suggesting several routes for sightseeing, and even serving us the real Italian coffee. We had a late flight on our way back from Rome, and Federica and her husband Franco were so kind to offer their assistance with the luggage. They took the luggage in the morning from the rented apartment, moved it to their own flat nearby, and saved us from the rain helping us with the luggage in the evening, when the taxi arrived (also arranged by Federica). It is not common to see someone so friendly and helpful!
We loved the Trastevere area: within walking distance or small public transport ride to most of the Rome sightseeing, but yet very cozy, lively and bright neighborhood. You have to walk 2 minutes for the nearest small supermarket and 5 minutes to the open air market, but the small walk is very worth it because you pass beautiful piazza and tiny old streets full of life and interesting things.
In the evening Trastevere becomes crowded with both tourists and local people, who come here for a drink or for a nice dinner. It may be noisy in the bigger streets, but this apartment is very quiet, so you will not be disturbed by the noise. So just couple of steps from one of the local trattoria, and you are at your quiet home.
The apartment itself is not very large but perfectly suits a family of two adults and two children. The owners keep many tourist guides and other interesting books in Italian and English in the room. We never had any troubles or discomfort during our stay.
I definitely recommend this apartment to a couple or a family with children, who want to taste a flavor of the beautiful Trastevere area and still be very close to the historical sites in Rome.

"Our" home in Rome
Federica met us promptly at the apartment, and began immediately to familiarize us with the apt.and the area. She provided us with maps and guides, suggested restaurants, ATM, phone number for local taxi, and bus routes. Her library included everything from Fodors and Frommer guides to texts of ancient Rome.
The place was decorated with love and care to make you feel "at home". Her enthusiasm in wanting to share her love of the city made our visit memorable. The location was perfect for us in a warm "village like" atmosphere...after sightseeing in an otherwise large, cold city.
The food in the neighborhood was some of the best we had in Rome, and the location was easily accessible to the tram. There was also great "people watching" at the square nearby.
We loved this spacious home, and we loved the big king size bed. Federica told us that she had invested in a good, comfortable bed, and she was right. It was the best sleep we had in our entire 3 weeks away from home.
We highly recommend this apartment! It really is more beautiful than the photos.
We are now planning our trip for next year, and we will return to stay with Federica and Franco.
Loved our stay at al Portoncino!
This is a lovely apartment in the best neighborhood in Rome! Every street in Trastevere looks like a postcard, there are cafes galore right outside the front door, it's a very easy (and beautiful) walk to most 'hot spots'...and the hosts, Federica and Franco, could not have been more welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We are so glad we chose al Portoncino...it felt like a true, authentic Italian experience and we can't wait for our next visit!
Just as advertized...lovely!
The apartment in Trastevere was great! My husband, myself and our 22 year old son, who had previously completed a semester at the University in Rome, spent 4 nights there. It was very clean, the king sized bed was so comfortable with a bonus of nice cotton sheets and blankets. The single bed that our son slept on was also very good. We only cooked breakfast while we were there but the kitchen was well equipped for more extensive meals.
The location was ideal for us as we enjoyed walking to the different sights. About a 15-20 minute walk put us in the midst of some of the major sights like the Forum and Palatine Hill. Trastevere is so quintessential with narrow little streets and lots of restaurants. We loved it!
The second day of our stay, while my husband and I were out sightseeing, our son had a medical emergency so he called Federica. She came to the apartment and helped him get to the hospital. She left a note for us and later called to update us on which hospital and where. The time and care that she took to help our son was above and beyond and we are very thankful for her help. Federica also helped us with online reservations for the train to Cinque Terre. Also, the computer in the apartment was very useful and had Skype so that we could communicate with folks at home.
Both Federica and Franco were a pleasure to meet and it was a pleasure to rent their lovely apartment.
Great Place to Live in Rome
My mother and sister wanted to go to Rome for the first time and left it to me to organise. I've lived in Rome before and decided that an apartment would be the way to go.
I found Federica and Franco's place in Trastevere and quickly decided to book. It was a great choice.
Franco is the perfect host and they have lovely place in the heart of the action, but it's in a street that doesn't suffer from any outside noise.
Everything you want is close to hand.
The apartment was spotless and the facilities are good - three adults lived comfortably for the week.
The best way to experience a city is to live like a local - we really enjoyed it.
Go here. I certainly will again.
Charming location, absolutely recommended
The apartment is very nice, clean and fully equipped with everything one might need during staying even for a longer period of time. Located in very heart of Trastevere, the most beautiful and charming part of Rome, it is a perfect starting point to explore Rome. It's only 10 minutes walking distance over Ponte Sisto to Campo de' Fiori, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, etc.
The owners, Federica and Franco, are very kind and pleasant people and they were both wonderful and helpful during our stay - ordered a taxi for us from and to the airport, made a reservation at a nearby restaurant upon our late arrival, gave us all advice we needed
We truly recommend "Il Portoncino” to everyone who wants to spend their vacation in Rome.
Perfect apartment in lovely Trastevere
Frederica and Franco were wonderful hosts and we loved the apartment. The location is in a perfect spot on a quiet, pretty street and the neighborhood is great for walking and exploring. The kitchen was well-equipped, and the whole apartment was impeccably clean. Any questions we had were responded to with efficiency and friendliness. We will definitely stay here again when we return to Rome!
Great apartment in a great location to explore Rome from
Myself, my wife & my two kids stayed here in late March 2011 and loved it! The apartment was clean, well taken care of, and very comfortable. All the amenities were as advertised -- and even though a dryer would have been nice, having a washing machine was great
The apartment is in a quiet side street in the lively Trastevere neighbourhood. Just a few moments walk leads you to lots of restaurants, gelaterias, shops and more. We usually ended up back in Trastevere most nights for dinner, since there were just so many reasonably priced & tasty options. The location was also great for exploring all of Rome.
The owners Federica and Franco were very helpful in helping us in our travels -- they arranged for a car when we arrived & left, and helped us settle in. All in all, it was the perfect place & we would definitely like to come back!
Lovely apartment in ideal area, perfect resting spot
We couldn't have been happier with this apartment. I took a trip to Rome with my boyfriend and my mum in early april. From booking onwards Federica and Franco were helpful, arranging a car to collect us from the airport and bring us straight to the front door of the apartment where they were waiting all smiles.
Before they left they told us everything we needed to know, showed us where local amenities were on the map and suggested routes to various spots we wanted to visit.
The apartment itself is lovely. It was spotlessly clean, classically stylish, neatly arranged and everything you need is there. A fully equipped kitchen with gas cooker and dishwasher (we ate in one night with lovely fresh Italian ingredients), a dining table, a desk with computer for internet, living room with sofa (which also pulls out into a comfortable single bed), a mini Rome library, a small but sweet balcony with table (it doesn't get the sun really, but nice for fresh air in summer), a bathroom with freestanding shower and a window, a discreet cupboard with washing machine and products, and a double bedroom with comfy firm bed, wardrobes, all towels provided.
The location is a quiet street in gorgeous Trastevere. You are minutes away from cafes, restaurants, bars, churches, shops: but it's as peaceful as anything. Also, we walked everywhere while we were in Rome - we didn't once take transport, that's how easy it is to get around. In 10 mins you'll be over a bridge and on your way to ancient Rome.
It was at the expensive end of the places we were looking to stay in, but we all agreed it was worth it. Quick, go to Rome!
a gem of an apartment in Trastevere
As others have said, Federica and Franco are extremely hospitable and are wonderful people available to help with any questions/problems you might have. That is important when you stay in an unfamiliar environment and are not necessarily fluent in the language. The apartment is delightful, extremely comfortable, and perfectly appointed. No detail is overlooked. Far superior in charm compared to other rental apartments I have used, meticulously clean, and in a fantastic historic location. Can not recommend highly enough!!
Warm and Hospitable
I stayed with my sister and brother-in-law for a week at Federica and Franco's apartment on Vicolo del Leopardo. You couldn't ask for more hospitable and helpful "landlords"! The apartment is on a quiet side in a lively and friendly neighborhood, close to lots of restaurants, cafes, shops, etc., and has everything you need for your stay.

A charming apartment in the most convenient location possible
Federica and Franco are the accommodating hosts of this lovely Trastevere apartment, within walking distance of most of Rome's attractions. Located on a quiet street, but only around the corner from Santa Maria in Trastevere, the apartment has been beautifully restored and provides every luxury, including wifi. From here, one can walk across the Tiber, up the Janiculum Hill or down to St. Peter's. Bus and tram transport are nearby, as are a multitude of shops and restaurants and even a cinema that shows English language films two days a week. Most important, if you need anything, Federica and Franco are there to assist. We have stayed for several weeks in the winter, a most opportune time to visit the Eternal City, and couldn't be happier!
We were delighted!
My wife and I absolutely loved our " home " in Trastevere.
The apartment has everything you could possibly want, including a computer. It was great to be able to send and check emails.
The area is fantastic, and is easy walking to many restaurants, funky shops, and tourist sights.
Federica and Franco are delightful, and obviously very proud to share "Roma" with their guests.
We even had wine and chocolate on arrival!
We wish we could go every year.
Style, Comfort and Value in Rome
My wife and I stayed in al Portoncino from 10 to 16 October, 2010. We loved the stylish d?cor and fitout, which is classical but not 'stuffy' or pretentious, found the location to be wonderful - within the distinctive 'urban village' of Trastevere but with both central Rome and the Vatican in walking distance - and the hosts Federica and Franco friendly but not obtrusive, with extremely helpful advice about sights and transport. The apartment is very comfortable for two, with a fine kitchen, modern bathroom (though small), natural light and air via a little balcony, good plumbing (plenty of hot water pressure!), cable television and internet access, its own clothes washing machine (but no dryer) and some wonderful books about Rome and its history, art and architecture. We would happily recommend al Portoncino as a base for anyone in Rome for more than a couple of days. Two points to be aware of: the apartment is one storey up from street level with no lift (but is not unusual in this respect); and at the time of our visit the buzzer at the street entrance to the building didn't clearly identify al Portoncino, so we buzzed a neighbour at random to announce our arrival (maybe Federica has attended to this now?).
An amazing Rome experience
I just returned from a 4 week stay in this beautiful apartment located in quaint, charming Trastevere. I cannot say enough good things about, not only the apartment itself, but Federica and Franco. The apartment deserves 5 stars and the owners should receive an additional one. I felt cared for and catered to. The apartment had everything I needed to relax and concentrate on enjoying my stay. I loved that a computer was provided and the desk became my "command central" while I planned my days. Trastevere is an unique, eclectic neighborhood full of restaurants, shops, and locals. It truly is a slice of authentic Italy, yet very close to area interests and attractions. I found getting around to be very easy using the busses, trams, and metro. This apartment became my home in every sense of the word during my 4 weeks there and I look forward to getting the opportunity to return.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this well appointed appartment
This appartment was well situated in Trastevere. It was close to everything, restaurants, supermarkets, good shops and places of interest. We walked everywhere without any bother. The appartment itself was extremely well exquiped. The owners were ever so friendly and helpful. They even helped find a fantastic tour guide for our tour of the Vatican. If we return to Rome we will definitely stay in this appartment again.

As good as we hoped for!!
A truly warm welcome was the start of our shortbreak in Rome. Federica and Franco were very helpfull in giving us advice on what to see and to do if you visit Rome for a few days. They even make reservations at their favourite restaurants, that guarantee a truly local experience! The location is definately the best! A quiet pitoresque residential street, just around the corner of great bars, restaurants, but no noise!!! The apartment is well furnished and equipped, very clean and includes a king size bed; very welcome for us tall Dutchies!
Would love to return to this apartment on our next visit to Rome, and yes, we do recommend it!

Exactly what we were looking for
Federica greeted us right on time and showed us through her apartment. She went to the trouble of explaining some of the sights, restaurants etc. This delightful apartment was perfect for us. It was fully self-contained, including a computer and internet connection, and lacked nothing. The tiny verandah, even though it had no view, provided a nice space to drink a beautiful bottle of Valpolicella at the end of long day of walking. We were only there for 3 nights but it was one of the accommodation highlights of our 21 day trip in Italy. We would go back again without hesitation.
Fussy people will find the bathroom small, but it's the same space you will find throughout Italy. Remember that this is an apartment, not a hotel, so bring all your toiletries. We forgot ours...

The perfect apartment for 2 persons in the heart of one of the most energized districts in Rome. The owners have thought of everything you might need right down to an ipod cord for use with the apartment's computer.
The apartment is exactly as represented - a cozy home away from home near to all the major sites.
We arrived way ahead of schedule and, while the apartment was being cleaned, the owners took us to breakfast and then gave us a walking tour of the district pointing out the best places for bread, gelato and dinner. Absolutely the most charming couple.
I have no reservations in recommending this apartment to my friends - and in fact already have.

Excellent location for home from home in Rome!
My husband and I have just returned from this fabulous apartment. I don't think the location could be beaten; we spent a week exploring Trastevere and the ancient parts of the city; all within comfortable walking distance of the apartment. The apartment is situated on a quiet cobbled street, just a couple of streets back from the many restaurants and shops which attract people across the Ponto Sisto to the Trastevere side of the Tiber. Federica and Franco are brilliant hosts who genuinley care about the comfort and experience that their guests have in Rome. The apartment has everything you could need, with a well equipped kitchen, immaculate shower room, comfortable lounge/diner, wi-fi computer and a huge, comfortable bed. Being collected at the airport in a car arranged by Federica is an excellent way to start the holiday and saves all the hassle of taxis and buses. Rome itself was a delight. The people in shops and restaurants were generally very friendly and appreciated our somewhat feeble attempts at their language and in most cases spoke enough English anyway for us to make ourselves understood. We would definitely recommend the Trastevere area of Rome as an excellent base, with this apartment having everything you could possibly need. Having hosts as friendly and caring as Federica and Franco was the icing on the cake! The highlight of our holiday was taking Federica's advise and climbing some very steep steps close to the apartment, leading up to Gianicola, (Janiculum Hill) giving the most amazing views out across Rome as you walk along the top for 10/15 minutes, before dropping down to the Vatican. Stunning!

Absolutely Perfect - Do Not Hesitate To Book al Portoncino
Al Portoncino was the perfect place to stay while visiting Rome - it was truly a home away from home.
Located in the charming and vibrant Trastevere neigbourhood, Al Portoncino, the flat itself, was wonderfully quiet and immaculately kept. Furthermore, it was close and easy for us to walk to all of the major sites in Rome.
Federica and Franco were extremely helpful and friendly.
They arranged travel to and from the airport and went out of their way to to make sure we were comfortable. It was clear to us, they had thought of every convenience and amenity to make our stay and visit to Rome truly an exceptional one.
We most highly recommend al Portoncino and would not hesitate a single moment to stay again.
A lovely stay
If you're looking for relax in a beautiful place, if you'd like living in the heart of Rome and listen to his genuine people,
eating typical local foods, reaching the History just walking a little...well, this is the Right Place. Federica and Franco will give you even excellent advices about Rome.
A place where you can find all you need for your holiday in Rome. Great attention to particulars, cleanliness, hospitality and a beautiful location in one of the most typical district of the city. Absolutely perfect!!!

A Gem in the alleyways of Trastevere
This is indeed a lovely apartment in a delightful location. It is well appointed, stylish and comfortable. Even a computer. The kitchen is has everything for the interested cook (or budding chef) who wants to recreate the taste sensations available in the multiple eating places of Trastevere just out the front door. Above all it is location and the nice people who run this apartment that make it a fabulous place to stay. If we were to visit Rome again this is where we would want to stay.

Central, quiet, characterful apartment
We could not have hoped for a better place to stay in Rome..Frederica is a gracious and most helpful host, from even before we set foot in her beautifully appointed apartment (small yet comfortable), she was fantastic to communicate with over email. So quiet and peaceful, this apartment is actually a few steps away from the heart of Trestevere, full of trattorias and bars. Also so central in terms of walking around Rome. We cannot highly recommend it enough! Thank you for making the start of our holiday so special.
Amazing location and perfect for 4 people!
We had an amazing stay here. Federica was incredibly hospitable, even before we arrived she was recommending events that would be on while we were in Rome (we took her suggestion and attended a lovely ballet at the Roman Baths). The apartment itself is immaculate--clean and comfortable, with every amenity you could need. They have thought of so many little touches to enhance the comfort and convenience of your stay. I was traveling with my spouse and two friends, and the pull-out couch was very comfortable--we slept great! Federica wasn't in town when we arrived, but she arranged for her English-speaking friend to meet us, and the check-in was quick and pleasant. Federica also called on us a few times during the week to make sure we had everything we needed.
The location is amazing. Trastavere is just south of the river, but with easy access to the popular sites (we purchased a Roma Pass which included transportation costs--we highly recommend the pass). The area feels more local, with busy restaurants and unique shops--the place livens up quite a bit at night, but we didn't hear a thing while we were trying to sleep.
The only downside to the apartment is the lack of natural light. They've installed adequate lighting and there is one window in the living room area and one window in the bedroom, but it would be nice to have a bit more natural light.
Other than that, we couldn't have been happier with our choice of apartments--and we did a lot of research beforehand!

Lovely apartment in great neighborhood
This apartment is very comfortable and tastefully decorated. Although the Trastevere neighborhood is lively, the apartment is extremely quiet and secure. It is very clean, well-maintained with new appliances and kitchen area. It is bright and cheerful. The owners are consistently responsive and helpful-as well as charming and trustworthy. Franco and Federica clearly value not only their investment, but the satisfaction of their guests!
A Five Star Experience
From the moment that we walked into al Portoncino apartment, we knew that we had really found something special. Our first impression was that we had a very comfortable, beautiful place to stay during our holiday in Rome. The space had been restored to perfection, with both style and comfort in mind.
Not only was the actual space beautiful, but every detail was considered. The apartment includes top of the line Whirlpool appliances (dishwasher, range, refrigerator, washing machine), a fully stocked kitchen, bathroom, and a beautiful living space and bedroom. Nothing was overlooked in the preparation of this apartment. The owners prepared a very useful book for their guests that includes information about the Trastevere neighborhood and clearly written instructions regarding the operation of all appliances and details needed for a safe and comfortable stay.
Additionally, we stayed at the apartment with our infant son, who was very comfortable in the space. A "pack n play" style crib was provided, and he slept well all week in it. We slept well, too, in the comfortable king size bed.
Finally, the apartment is located in Trastevere, which is one of the best locations in Rome. After living in Rome previously for two years, the first by the Piazza del Popolo and the second in Trastevere, I can attest that Trastevere is the most centrally located, enjoyable place to be. However, Trastevere can be very noisy as it is such a bustling place at night. This apartment faces the interior courtyard of the building, and therefore was peaceful and quiet all day and night long. It truly is a gem of a place, especially in this respect.
I cannot recommend this apartment more highly. If it is available when you are travelling to Rome, do not hesitate to book it immediately. You cannot find this kind of comfort and luxury at the best five star hotels. The quality and comfort that you find here for the price is just an unbeatable value. You will not be disappointed!

perfect Roman holiday
Clean, airy apartment located in fascinating section of Trastevere, near fine restaurants. The owner was exceptionally generous and helpful with directions and recommendastions. It helps that Federica speaks fluent English!

The Best apartment in Rome (Trastevere)
Al Portoncino was "the best" A Great Location, within walking distance to everywhere you want to go. It is an Excellent Value, very clean, well furnished, and quiet. Very spacious witha a great bed and bathroom. The apartment is well stocked with just about everything you might need for your stay...just like home.
Federica (one of the owners) is very helpful in pointing out where to shop and eat and how to get to where you want to visit. Highly Recommended!! ***
Beautifully appointed, well located apartment. Walk everywhere!
Situated in a great location in central Trastevere, this apt has everything you need and more, including lots of character, a full range of facilities and a very friendly and helpful landlady. The kitchen was clean and exteremely well equipped and all appliances new. One drawback is the lack of English speaking channels on the TV but news fiends can keep up to date via the fast internet which is conveniently provided at no extra cost. The shower recess is rather small for large males so don't drop the soap or you may not be able to pick it up! We loved staying in this lovely apt in such a beautiful picturesque street.
Lovely apt in the middle of it all
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this apt located in the heart of Trastevere. The apt had been recently renovated and was in perfect shape. It is easy walking distance to many of the sights and great to come home to all the restaurants and shops. What we liked best was just how residential the area is. Also, there is a great walk through the hills down to the Vatican.
The Best Place in Rome
We spent 10 days in this terrific flat.
Great Location: This part of Trastevere has the advantage of a Very easy walking access to all of Rome in minutes across Ponte Sisto. We walked everywhere. Easy walks to Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona, The Pantheon, the Forum, the Vatican etc. Yet more authentic and relaxed daily life away from the bustle.
This flat is on a charming and v. quiet little street, yet close to great restaurants (some right around the corner) and entertainment.
The Flat is Very attractive, roomy, comfortable and well thought out. The owners have exceptional taste and have treated it as a place they would want to live in. Their attention to detail shows. Great bed and bath, and an easy care full kitchen with a fine oven and cooktop. All sparkling, new, and working perfectly. The small terrace made a great place to sit outside and have croissants and coffee or wine and snacks. There is no sense of "compromising." This would be an equally good place for a short or a long stay.
The flat and its location are terrific, and the helpfulness and expertise of the owner, Federica, is the icing on this Roman cake. She is a gold mine of information about the best places to eat and shop in Rome, and if you need anything, she is always there to help. She is genuinely eager to make sure that your experience in her flat and in Rome is the best.
We spent days before our trip doing research and looked at dozens of places for our stay in Rome and genuinely feel that we were lucky to have chosen this one.
