Originally called Piazza Tagliacozza, in honour of Miss Isabella Orsini from Tagliacozzo who was the owner of some buildings in the neighbourhood, the actual name derives from one of the patriots of the Italian Risorgimento, the political and social movement thanks to which the different states of the Italian Peninsula were agglomerated into a single state in the 19th century. Continually modified during the 19th century, the square is delimited by several magnificent buildings, such as the Baroque church of St. Carlo ai Catinari or Maderno’s Palazzo Santacroce.
