Built on the ruins of the Stadium of Domitian, this district has evolved over the centuries and boasts the most stunning baroque architecture. The square plays host to open-air painters and cultural events both night and day all year round. It is especially known for its huge presepe market that sells nativity scenes during the holidays. Also nearby is Via del Governo Vecchio. The street, formerly the papal route to St. Peter's, is packed with antique shops and 15th- and 16th-century houses. Today, the neighbourhood is home to artisans and affluent Romans. Expect to find crowded shops during the day, and packed wine bars, outdoor cafés, and trendy restaurants at night.
