City Lights Boutique Lodge also has a 2 bedroom cottage, which is offered on a self catering basis (no breakfast included). It is tastefully decorated with one bedroom with Queen bed, another bedroom with single bunk beds. Fully equipped kitchen, with oven, microwave, dishwasher and fridge/freezer, bathroom with toiletries. Lounge/kitchen/dining area and small laundry with washing machine and tumble dryer. All towels and bedding included and price is for 4 people max. Decks and gardens to enjoy the lovely views as well as a BBQ for outdoor summer cooking. Parking outside for 2 cars.

Perched on the slopes of Mount Ngongotaha in Rotorua, we are just 8 minutes drive from the town centre of Rotorua. Guests can enjoy the wonderful views over the town and of the mountainside whilst being on the doorstep of the town and attractions in the area. Our cottage is next door to the main house, City Lights Boutique Lodge. There is parking right outside the Cottage for up to 2 cars and we are located only a few km's from many of the geothermal parks in Rotorua and many other attractions the region has to offer.

We stayed at this cottage for 6 nights in December 2011. We had a good time overall. The cottage is very nicely furnished. It isn’t that large, but there is enough space for a couple and two children. The lounge is comfortable, and the kitchen is modern with plenty of plates, cutlery, etc. The best thing is probably the garden – a lovely little kitchen garden, where you can sit in the shade and feed the llamas if you want. The cottage is on a hillside, and there is a lovely view of Rotorua down below.
The owners made us feel very welcome, with advice on where to visit in Rotorua. We saw inside their B&B;, which seemed lovely – very well furnished.
The only downside was that the cottage itself smelt badly of cigarette smoke. We did everything to try and get rid of the smell – but it lingered throughout our week, and we ended up visiting the pharmacy for medicine to treat our sore throats. We were told that the previous owner of the cottage was a heavy smoker. Maybe it will get better with time, but it affected our enjoyment of the property. This wouldn’t be an issue with the B&B;, though.
The other thing to bear in mind is that Rotorua itself can be a bit rough – quite a few drunks on the streets at night, we found. So good for a base to visit the surrounding region, but if you want to do things in a town setting, other options may be better.
So three stars for the cottage, would be an easy four stars without the cigarette smell. -
