Directions to The Retreat were easy to follow--Beautiful place, nicely decorated, evrything we could need was there. The view was great, nice quiet atmosphere, management was very helpful and the beach was fantastic! Just what we wanted, and a bar and restaurent next door, Kaibo just a mile away with great food and two other eating places just 15-20 minutes away. A graet stay, snorkeling right off the beach. Will be back for sure.

48503An affordable Slice of Paradise
Left on 04/17/2012 for a stay in April 2012
We just returned from an 11-night stay in Grand Cayman, of which, 6 were spent at The Retreat at Rum Point. We wanted to be away from the crowds (and expense!) of 7-Mile, have a swimmable beach with snorkeling nearby, but also a few things to do w/in walking distance or a short drive. The Retreat seemed to fit the bill perfectly, and once we arrived, we were stunned by how beautiful the property was from end to end. The photos really do not do the complex justice!
Condo #14 itself was sparkling clean, nicely decorated, and had basically everything we needed for a family of four (kids on pull-out in living room). We cooked-in quite a bit, and can't think of one kitchen item or utensil that wasn't provided (except maybe salt/pepper). Having an ice maker and filtered water from the fridge was a huge plus as well. The only thing I might recommend would be to replace the pots & pans, as most were heavily scratched and the teflon was worn-through completely in spots (I believe they are phasing-out teflon for health reasons, especially once it gets scratched???) A sharpening steel for the knives would be useful as well.
We enjoyed having the ground floor unit so we could walk right out to the beach and the large, screened-in lanai was great for relaxing after a day in the sun. The location on the opposite end of the property away from Rum Point made for total peace and privacy, but we were still an easy walk to and from Rum Point, which is where we spent most of our time during the day. There we enjoyed meeting and talking with folks from many parts of the world who came for the day from cruise excursions or other parts of the island. We took the RedSail Catamaran from there to Stingray City, which was the highlight of the trip for the kids for sure! The kids made several friends on the beach, and there was plenty of shade, chairs & hammocks to go around. Drink prices are a bit steep at The Wreck Beach Bar, but we enjoyed the occasional fruity beverage or beer, and the burgers were good too.
Snorkeling at Rum Point was not to be missed, but with a few caveats. Perhaps we were there during a particularly rough time, but even when the surface water seemed somewhat calm, the current made for a hearty swim in order to get out far enough to see the best stuff. If you start out down the beach, well to left of The Retreat (looking at it from shore...East I think?), swim out to the coral gardens and/or boulder gardens, you can relax for a while and drift, as the current does carry you back along toward Rum Point. This gives you a nice rest, because then swimming back toward shore is another good workout due to the current. I guess my point is that the snorkeling is divine, but not for beginners or for those not in decent physical shape. Again, it may have been just this time of year, or simply this particular week, but I thought I should at least put it out there for those who are looking for a nice, leisurely swim/snorkel. I would highly recommend Testudo's Snorkel Blog online for a very detailed description of how and where to go in the Rum Point area.
A special note about the owner and management: Mr. Monge was more than gracious and accommodating to our family when an unexpected issue required us to move to a different unit for our 5th & 6th nights. Without hesitation, we were allowed to move to the owner's 2bdrm unit, #32, of which I will also give high marks in a separate review. Gigi in The Retreat office was extremely helpful, and the cleaning crew that arrived as we were checking out were very friendly.
So much more to say, but please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We truly hope to return to Grand Cayman and Rum Point next year, and would not hesitate to rent from Mr. Monge again! -

Oakdale, MNBest vacation ever!!!

If you are looking for a slice of paradise this is the place to go. We spent seven glorious days relaxing on the beach that was right out our door. From the living room and lanai we had incredible views of the ocean. The condo came with everything that you would need to enjoy your vacation including a washer and dryer. The kitchen was fully furnished and the owner had even provided snorkel gear for our use. We can't wait to return again next winter.
