Hindman, KYA time of rest and relaxation in paradise!
Left on 10/11/2011 for a stay in December 2009
Our son and daughter-in-law asked both sets of parents to take this vacation with them. Of course, the main reason for going was to spend time with our beautiful grandson and secondly to experience one of the most extraordinary places on this earth. St. John is by far the most welcoming and interesting of the Virgin Islands. The home we stayed was fantastic with plenty of room and easily accessible. It has a great view of Coral Bay and there is a breeze most of the time. It is over the mountain from the more inhabited part of the island and that is a plus for me. Several wonderful beaches are close by and there are also some excellent places to eat. It is the perfect place for a family vacation.

Savannah, GAOur Favorite Place on the Planet
Left on 05/28/2011 for a stay in February 2011
St. John is two-thirds National Park. The ferry dock from St. Thomas is on the Cruz Bay side of the island and the house is on the far less crowded Coral Bay side. If glitzy nightlife accompanied by the teeming masses is your cup of tea, this is not the place for you.
We've been coming to St. John since the early 70's and to Halcyon since the early 80's. It has become our favorite place on the planet. The house sits on two lots in a saddle that affords a special view, including all of Coral Bay, Johnson Bay, East End, the surrounding mountains and neighboring islands, Norman, Flanagan and Tortola. The architect took advantage of the natural surroundings and brings them into the main living area (If you don't believe me, turn out all the lights some night, stand with your back to the door exiting the kitchen and look). The primary living space is on the second floor with surrounding decks and a central open air atrium. There is no a/c, but we've been comfortable at all times of the year courtesy of the prevailing sea breezes and ceiling fans. The house is surrounded by a garden featuring indigenous tropical plants and flowers-including your own fresh mangoes, limes, and papayas in season. Hang a bowl of sugar in the atrium and watch the bananaquits. There are two private master suites, with spacious bathrooms featuring local stone work. The kitchen is well equipped and separated from the dining and living area by a bar so that the cooks can be part of the fun.
For those times when the cooks mutiny, there are restaurants nearby with at least one featuring live, local music each night. They range from Skinny's featuring the best hamburgers anywhere to the more upscale aqua Bistro, with Donkey Diner(brunch), Shipwreck, and Miss Lucy's in between.
Owner's reps Jay and Mary Dufur are just up the road and are extremely knowledgeable and quite helpful. Halcyon is a place that is extraordinary for getting away from the hustle and stress of everyday life.

The views are amazing from every angle of the house. Located in a quiet neighborhood, close to some of the best beaches and best restaurants on the island.
The two master suites are worth fighting over. Other bedrooms have ample space and more than enough bathrooms.
Very comfortable and private with living space that invites relaxation, indoors and out. Well equipped kitchen for fun cooking with friends.
Between the location, comfort and views, you will not want to leave! -

KentuckyVery relaxing trip

This is a beautiful house on the Southeast corner of St. John. The area is residential and quiet - very nice for a relaxing vacation! There is a couple on-island that helps you settle in and takes care of any issues that come up - they took care of everything and really did a great job.
We took a star off location because the house is advertised as a 5-7 minute walk to the beach, but we had trouble finding that beach and the roads are dangerous to walk on if you are not used to them. Nevertheless, there are many beautiful beaches 10-20 minutes away by car.
The house was very clean - we had to take care of some pests that had gotten in when we arrived (due to a torn screen), but they did not return and otherwise the cleaners did a very good job. If no-see-um bites are an issue for you, be sure to bring plenty of bug spray.
The house does not have a/C, which appears to be island standard. With the climate, you really don't miss it except occassionally at night. There are plenty of fans to cool you off even then.
One suggestion we'd make is to update the house's guestbook with current menus or pricing on the local restaurants. There were restaurants with $10 meals and with $40 meals side-by-side, and except for one we didn't know what to expect when we got to them. (I thought the food was excellent; it was just the prices that varied.)
We really enjoyed our time on the island. We were looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation and that's exactly what we got. If you want danceclubs or a crowd of tourists, look elsewhere. You won't find a better beach or view of the ocean anywhere else! -

Charlottesville, VirginiaSpecial home in a beautiful place

We stayed here for a Christmas week holiday with our daughter and her family including two grandsons. The house was perfect -- casual, well-equipped, great location and with plenty of room for active children. We loved being both on the quiet side of the island as well as close to great beaches and snorkeling. There is a choice of restaurants closeby. The house is perfectly located with fantastic views of the bay below and nearby islands. It is also beautifully designed for comfort, interest and privacy for a family group. You have the feeling that the Weinbergs want you to share their home -- and it is full of mementos of their personal family history that they are happy to share. We enjoyed papayas almost every day from the tropical fruit garden surrounding the house. We would love to return.
