Indianapolis, INWonderful Location, Big House, nothing fancy
Left on 08/01/2012 for a stay in July 2012
This is our 9th time to rent a house for summer week on St George Island. In many ways, this house is perfect. It very private, protected by scrub along the dunes, but with a nice boardwalk. It allows pets, but was not dirty from pets. It has 3 good-sized bedrooms on the second floor and a living room, dining area, big kitchen, and master bedroom on the third floor. There's even an elevator. Washer and dryer were in good condition and the appliances were all fine too. One of the 2nd floor bedrooms has a bath in it, plus there's a shared bath for the other two bedrooms. The laundry room has a second refrigerator.
So why do I say nothing fancy? If you've ever stayed at SGI, you know some of the houses are really nicely appointed, and some of them feel like rentals. This is certainly in the latter category. The furniture is fine, but some of it is beat. The decorations are things someone just put in there so it looked less empty. The tvs are small and old. No extra beach stuff, bicycles, etc. Plenty of kitchen equipment, but all just standard.
This house if for sale. I'm pretty sure the current owners are taking a beating, so they're just keeping alive as a rental til they sell it. I would absolutely rent this house again, but if you are an SGI regular, just know this is the kind of house that feels like a rental, not the kind that feels like a lived-in mansion.
And the rental agency was fantastic, by the way. -

Po8 is a bit run down, some lights don't work, the decor is old and broken, the dishwasher is loud and slow, as is the coffee maker. Refrigerators freeze liquids regardless of setting. Poorly equiped and very dated kitchen. Several toilets run constantly despite efforts to fix them. No usable fish cleaning area and much of the exterior railing wood is rotted and in need of paint. The screens on the porch are torn and hard to see through from build up.
All that said, if you are looking for a perfect location in a house that has the basics, at a good price, look no further! Po8 has one fo the best locations in the Plantation. on one side are two vacant lots. The public access boardwalks are equidistant from either side. The result? almost 500 yards of private beach, even in the high season. We only had one family within 250 yards of either side of us. we felt like we had rented the house and the beach! -

We had stayed at Pieces of Eight a few years ago, and loved the layout and the location. It's a beautiful home that is slowly going downhill. Lots of things need attention and a really deep cleaning. Even with all the things that I put on a note to the rental company, I love staying at this home, and would really love to see it not get in bad shape.
There were a few things that were needed when we checked in, and the rental company got them for us very promptly.
I have been coming to St. George Island for 15 years, and have pretty much stayed all over the island and this property is one of the top favorite.
Please show Pieces of Eight some attention, and I will be back to it someday! -

Left on 05/16/2012 for a stay in May 2012
Although the location is great and the house is spacious, the interior is worn and shabby. It lacks adequate cookware and flatware (much comes from Dollar General), appliances (the oven should have been replaced years ago), and chairs(there are only 5 in the dining room and 3 of the 6 plastic chairs on the deck were broken. The kitchen refrigerator is small and the one in the laundry room froze everything put in it and the temperature could not be adjusted. The bedrooms are off-putting, with squeaky beds, old bedspreads, and ultra-cheap blankets. The pictures on the website must have been taken at least 10 years ago. We have visited St. George Island many times and have never before been disappointed but we would not return to this location and wonder why the renters have not kept up this property on the Plantation.

Left on 01/06/2012 for a stay in December 2012
Pieces of Eight is a lovely home in a great location. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
However, having stayed in this home 6 years ago it is apparent that it is in need of some TLC. The furnishings and general maintenance are shoddy. Toilets don't stop flushing, the kitchen cupboards hold very little equipment for meal prep, and the linens are tired, tired, tired. Maybe the fact that this home is For Sale explains why it feels like the owners have just let things slide. Such a pity.

Enjoyed our second month-long stay at Pieces of Eight. The property has one of the most beautiful board walks directly on the beach than any house we have previously rented. Only one problem--washing machine stopped, but repairman arrived and fixed it almost as soon as I reported it to SGI Vacation Properties. One suggestion--update the sofas and dining room!

Buford, GAGreat Place--But Disappointing This Year
Left on 08/31/2011 for a stay in August 2011
This is my second consecutive year at Pieces of 8; it is a great place in a great location. Unfortunately, this year, the cleanliness of the place left much to be desired - dust buildup on wall hangings and light fixtures; dishes in the cabinet were dirty; Everything had to be washed before using it.
The house is on the market and, per my rental agreement, is subject to a realtor showing; with the stipulation that one hour notice will be given. After receiving a call that a realtor would be coming -- and agreeing to a morning visit, I waited several hours (have a dog with epilepsy that I wanted to remove before the walkthrough) and finally called back because the realtor had never arrived. Was told that the realtor's office was called and told not to come. At 2:30 that afternoon - while both of my daughters were in the house alone, the realtor appears -- in the kitchen on the 3rd floor - no knock on the door, no advance call - nothing, and proceeded to show the house.
This was a total violation of my contract and although we did complain, nothing was done (we were told that a complaint would be filed with the realtor). I am not sure exactly what I was looking for in restitution, but I am pretty sure I would have suffered a penalty if I had violated the contract in some manner instead.
I do love the place, but the experience this year was just not the same. -

The house is large and inviting but needs some TLC. There is plenty of space and the beds were comfortable. The kitchen needs some work. Some hardware is missing from the cupboards; some cupboard doors are off their hinges. The coffee maker needs replaced, takes about 30 minutes to make a pot of coffee. There are stains on the carpets; the vacuum cleaner did not clean well. Great Views, Great Location. Nice and Quiet like we like!

Left on 03/30/2011 for a stay in March 2011
Although the family had a wonderful time, we were a little disappointed in the condition of Pieces of Eight. The place was filthy! None of the back doors locked, light bulbs were burned out all around inside and out, the breaker kept popping on the dishwasher when we used it, many bugs in the house, etc. All of the appliances were well dated and the back screen door leading to the stairs was in major need of repair falling off the hinges. The master shower had plenty of mold and was discusting. The second master had a bad shower curtain. We will definately come back to the island but we won't be staying in this house again.

Cincinnati, OhioGreat location. Disappointing house.
Left on 01/06/2011 for a stay in December 2010
Booking Pieces of Eight was easy and uncomplicated.
The house location is perfect. The landscaping is unkept.
The house layout is very nice. Unfortunately, the entire house is lacking upkeep.
There is black mold around most windows and doors. The screens on all the windows are torn badly. The inside of the home has not been painted in years. Thick cobwebs abound. It is a very dirty house. Gummy dirt is along the baseboards and several months of grime in corners. Caulking is missing in bathtubs, along shower stall, around toilets. In the kitchen, tiles are missing, backsplash is deteriorating and cabinets are peeling. Counter is stained and dishwasher is fairly ineffective. We found dirty, caked dishes in cabinets on our arrival. Refrigerator is new. Stove, oven, microwave are functional but in need of replacement. Coffee maker was broken.
The bedsheets were clean but the comforters were not. The comforters are not the ones pictured on the website. They have been replaced with thin, stained, worn comforters. In the kitchen, there is one dishtowel and there are no potholders.
The elevator works but is dirty.
Why did we stay? My in-laws are older and arrived first. They had unpacked and were not willing to move. I went to the rental office to discuss the conditions of the house and dishes. They gave me 3 packets of dishwasher soap and a dustpan for the house that I had to ask for. They said they are not responsible for the sanitation of the dishes.
On the up side, the carpet is newer.
We found the house up for sale on Realtor.com. It's obvious the owners have let it fall into dis-repair and have no interest in its upkeep. Sad. We would not rent this house again.
We spent time with the rental company regarding the state of the house. I expected more for my money. We were offered no compensation.

The home was beautifully situated and the arrangement of the rooms suited our group very well. However, we were disappointed with the kitchen supplies. There were only 4 or 5 dinner forks (many dessert/salad forks), no small plates, badly worn pots and pans, no cork screw, etc. We have stayed at many places on St. George and this was the most poorly supplied kitchen. The shower in the master suite on the top floor was very slippery, which if not fixed, could lead to someone being hurt. For very little cost these issues could be addressed and this home made top notch.

Montgomery, ALA wonderful Thanksgiving
Left on 12/09/2010 for a stay in November 2010
It was a wonderful week with our son and his wife and two teen age boys from Houston, Texas. The house was spacious and allowed privacy and time alone for everyone. The Plantation is a beautiful place to stay with all of the natural landscapes. The view of the beach and ocean was beautiful and the screened in area was perfect for sitting and visiting. The fireplace was nice. The elevator topped it off as my husband has difficulty with stairs. We brought our family dogs and that made it perfect.
We cooked all meals including Thanksgiving dinner. My only complaint is the flatware in the kitchen. There is not enough and what is there does not match. We had to constantly wash what we had for the next meal. There were not even 6 standard size forks, we had to substitute salad forks.
It would also be nice to leave coffee filters, salt and pepper and dishwashing soaps as starters. We left ours behind for the next guests.
Overall it was a wonderful week and visit with the family.

We experienced problems with toilets blocking, we would have liked more cups or mugs as we had to wash up by hand after every hot drink. Most cooking utensils had to be cleaned before use. These were minor points and did not spoil our enjoyment of the holiday at all. We will hope to return next year.

Left on 08/04/2010 for a stay in July 2010
The house is in a wonderful area with great views of the beach and ocean. There is a large screeend deck with two screen doors, but the screen is missing from the top portion of one door and the screen is loose on the other. The carpet seems new, which was nice. But the steps had dust bunnies in the corners and all the baseboards were covered in dust. Most of the lampshades on the lamps in the living room are cracked, knobs missing from drawers, no potholders, mildew on the porch supports, but the biggest was the front of the refrigerator. Where the ice and water are dispensed, the area directly under this is rusty. My husband who is not that picky, was very disappointed.

The house was very large and was good for our extended family. The location was good. The house needed repairs on the scene porch. The kitchen needed to be better stocked also refrigerator front door was rusty but did work. The family did not like the mattresses on beds uncomfortable. They needed pest control for termites/flying ants. So we think the house needed some tender loving care.

Left on 05/12/2010 for a stay in April 2010
Comfortable house, clean, kitchen had plenty of dishes, glasses etc. Great ocean views from all the bedrooms and all the bedrooms were of decent size. And in April the beach was almost deserted so it felt like we had a private beach. The plantation in the back added to the sense of privacy. Screened in porch is great but the screen door needs to be repaired. Other than that, loved the house.

Disappointed Po8 Visitor
Athens, GAPieces of Eight Falling to Pieces
Left on 05/12/2010 for a stay in May 2010
This is 4th time we have stayed in Pieces of Eight. Before this most recent visit we were there in September of last year. At that time I wrote that the house was in need of numerous repairs. I must say that there has been new carpet installed since then and new flooring in the kitchen. However, the missing pieces of porch railing on the lower deck are still missing! This is a serious safety issue for visitors who bring small children as they can easily fall through. Additionally, there was an electrical cord hanging from the roof that had been cut and left hanging down where someone could touch it. Fortunately we determined that the cord was not plugged into an outlet, but none the less the cord should not have been there. Another safety issue is the dryer - it made an awful noise while it was running. From my experience with my own dryer, it sounds like the belt is loose on the drum which can cause a fire hazard. Perhaps the cleaning staff has noticed the noise? Either way, I would strongly recommend that the dryer be looked at by a qualified repairman.
As with our previous visit, there were a few lights that still did not work properly and the lowerer level doors are still missing screens. The yard appeared to have also been neglected for quite some time. The boardwalk to the beach was extremely overgrown, not to mention all the trash in the yard. Many of the porch chairs were broken and unusable. The boardwalk was so bad that we were tempted to go by some clippers and trim it ourselves!
We have been coming to SGI for 14 years and we love it! This is a great house in a great location! It just needs a little TLC to make it the perfect vacation spot. Unfortunately, we won't be renting this house again unless we are assured that the necessary repairs have been made and the house has been given the TLC it deserves. When we spend close to $3,000 for the week, we expect our accommodations to be exceptional in the good sense, not in the bad. -

Left on 10/23/2009 for a stay in December 2008
We stayed at Pieces of Eight for a week before Christmas. Our usually hectic, stress-filled
holiday time instead was one of total relaxation and enjoyment. The privacy afforded by the location of this home was awesome. We had the beach literally to ourselves most days. The home had everything we needed, and was a clean, comfortable and beautiful place to stay. We had a very positive experience. Check-in was a breeze, the gate security was always friendly, accommodating, and polite. and there was a no-hassle check out as well. Our whole family would love to return - but we probably won't - there are just too many other "ports of call" in this wide wide world! Although, Pieces of Eight will always remain a wonderful memory and we continually recommmend it to others.

Left on 10/14/2009 for a stay in October 2009
My family of 5 met my sister's family of 5 here for a long weekend. There was plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable. We enjoyed being able to walk out onto the beach at any time of the the day. The men did some surf fishing, the kids hunted for seashells and crabs while my sister and I just kicked back either on the decks or on the beach. We roasted oysters and grilled steak and fish on the outdoor grill.
The house was very clean but could use some updating. But for the rate, it was well worth it to be on the beach and inside a gated community. -

This was our second year to stay at Pieces of Eight and our fourth year to visit SGI. Two other families traveled with us, and it's a perfect beach house because all the bedrooms face the ocean, so everyone has an ocean view. The air conditioning was not working when we checked in, but St. George Island Vacation Properties worked to quickly resolve the problem. They installed a brand new unit and took care of us while we were waiting on a crew to come and replace it. I would definitely stay there again and would definitely rent from St. George Island Properties again.

Athens, GAHouse in need of repairs
Left on 10/14/2009 for a stay in September 2009
We have been coming to St George Island for about 15 years. We have stayed in Pieces of Eight three times now and each time the house seems to have more "issues." When we came the first time in the Spring of last year, we noticed that a few lights didn't work. No problem. When we came down in May, more lights didn't work. No problem. When we recently came down in September (reservation under Ken Bone), our trip started with the receptionist/customer service representative being unusually rude. Not a good way to start a trip that you have paid thousands of dollars for. Once we got to the house we found even more lights didn't work than before, outlets didn't work in the bathrooms, door handles were loose, and most importantly railings were missing from the lower deck. We had a 2 year old and a 3 year old with us that could have easily gotten hurt had they accidentally fallen from that deck. We love St George Island and we love coming to visit. This house is in a great location. We love the lay out. We also liked having use of the elevator and the easy access to the beach. Unfortunately unless repairs are made to this house, we will think twice before staying in it again. A house in such disrepair not only inconveniences your guests, it also sheds bad light on you and your company as a property management firm. Not a good way to retain repeat guests.

Atlanta, GAGreat location and convenience, but house could use some updatin
Left on 10/14/2009 for a stay in September 2009
We enjoyed our stay. We loved the house being directly on the beach and the convenience that provides. We loved the 2 wrap around decks. The house was clean, but our only issue was that the interior of the house could use a little updating. The garbarge disposal didn't work and the outlets in the bathrooms on the 2nd level did not work. Several things seemed pretty old that could be replaced for not very much money (i.e. the lamp shades in the living room, the fabric on the dining room chairs, the accessories in the bathrooms (toilet paper holders, towel racks, soap dishes) and the large rust spot on the kitchen refrigerator. Its a very nice house and just seems like it could be much better with a little TLC.

We were fortunate enough to stay at Pieces of Eight twice in 2009 - once in
March and once in July. It is the ideal home for us, and the fact that they allow
dogs makes it absolutely perfect. It is larger and more comfortable than it
appears in the photos. The location is wonderful and so private with the
empty lot next door. The views from any room in the house are breathtaking.
The kitchen is large and well stocked, the living room and bedrooms are nicely
furnished and the beds are actually comfortable, which we've found to be rare
in rentals. Having two masters is fantastic, as is having an elevator to bring up
the luggage. It's just the most peaceful, heavenly place imaginable. We've
been coming to SGI since 1995 and Pieces of Eight is our family's hands down
favorite rental home.
