Additional Location Information
1st Dibs is located on the East End of the island. I own two beachfront homes on the East End because I believe it to be superior to other parts of the island. St George Island is separated into three distinct sections- East End/State Park, Gulf Beaches, and Plantation. I have stayed at each of these parts and can tell you with complete certainty, that for me, the East End is the best. The least desirable is the Gulf Beaches area which is in the center of the island and is the most populated. It offers convenience to stores, but if you are looking for privacy, this would not be my first choice. If you are NOT renting a property and are just driving down for the day, you can park in a public lot or park along Gorrie Drive and just walk onto the beach. So, you will find that Gulf Beaches is the most crowded part of the island. Furthermore, the lot sizes for the houses built in this area are much smaller so there is less privacy.
The Plantation is a very attractive section of the island, but has its many drawbacks. First, the beaches are more crowded in the Plantation versus the East End. Second, due to the Plantation's proximity to Bob Syke's Cut, water from the Apalachicola Bay enters the gulf so you will find that the water will not be quite as clear as the East End. Third, the Plantation is a gated community. This, at first sounds like a positive. But wait until the time you wish to check into your beach rental only to have to sit in a long line of cars at the gate. Having a friend visit you becomes a hassle since each guest has to be registered in advance. Furthermore, crime on St. George Island is almost unheard of, the need for a gate to keep people out is a bit of a farce. One just needs to have their home far enough away from the Gulf Beaches area, where all the stores are located & public beach access, to enjoy complete privacy. Fourth, since the property owners of the Plantation pay a fee to the homeowner's association, you will find that the rental prices are generally higher in the Plantation. Fifth, the Plantation has more natural vegetation than the rest of the island. In some ways this could be viewed as an advantage. For my money, I see it as a disadvantage. When I am on vacation, I want to be able to sit in the living room or the porch and veer into the horizon of the gulf and see the water, sun, dolphins, etc, I do not want my view to be blocked by trees or shrubs.

TennesseeIncredibly Relaxing Stay - Great Property
Left on 02/18/2013 for a stay in February 2013
My wife and I stayed at 1st Dibs for three weeks in February. The property is wonderful and the home is well maintained. There is an elevator to/from all levels which made the entire home available to my wife who cannot ingress/egress using stairs. We had a slight problem with the pool heater but the owner was very responsive to any and all inquiries. The home offers three individual floors with plenty of room for large families and Jeff even allowed our family cat to join us. The home sits directly on the beach and is better than described in the advertisement. The little village of St. George has wonderful dining options -- Owl Café and Joe's being two of our favorites. The island is amazing in the sense that it has been left untouched by fast food joints, hotel chains, and box stores. The closest Wal-Mart is an hour away, as is McDonald's and the like. This served our purpose well --- we needed a few weeks to relax. This home is truly awesome and is furnished very tastefully, but in a way where you can relax and not worry about damaging anything. It has the glitz, but is "homey" and makes you feel welcome rather than "I don't want to touch anything." I would recommend this property for families, couples, retirees (like us), and anyone who just wants to get away from everything and enjoy the atmosphere of a small, friendly, and welcoming village. We will return to 1st Dibs, no question.

Jasper, TennesseeGreat Place!
Left on 08/22/2012 for a stay in August 2012
This is a great place for a large family. Our group included my 70+ year old parents, six other couples, 2 teenagers, 2 preschoolers, and 2 toddlers. We had plenty of room. The proximity to the beach was wonderful. My dad, who has difficulty walking, was even able to go onto the beach several times. The private pool too was great. There were some upkeep concerns that should be addressed otherwise I would have given this a "5". The ice machine did not work, and would have been nice. With this many people, you use alot of ice. One burner on the stove did not work. Bummer! Several of the plastic chairs on the deck were broken. Also note that if you have small children there are wide stairs. We took baby gates, but they weren't wide enough to close off the stairs. We did use the gate on the deck to close off the stairs to the ground level. This made it possible to take the toddlers out onto the deck without worrying about the stairs. Overall we all agreed this was our best vacation ever. We loved SGI and look forward to returning.

Owner
Thank you very much for leaving such positive feedback. All broken plastic deck chairs have been replaced with sturdier aluminum chairs and the stove burner has been fixed. Regarding the ice maker, 1st Dibs has two ice makers. One is an in-cabinet ice maker which we tested and is working fine. The other is located in the sub-zero freezer. We have noticed that if the ice drawer is not placed correctly into the slot, the freezer does not make ice. Thanks again for sharing your experience and we hope to see you again!

Relaxation, relaxation, and relaxation- the comforts of home while being away on vacation. Big spacious bedrooms, living room that is huge with a killer view and kitchen that is unmatched. The view from the balcony is incomparable, seclusion that is unbelievable and large beach right at the back steps. Who could ask for more? Perfect location close to restaurants, grocery stores, shopping and many family activities including great surf fishing. Didnt want to leave.

PhiladelphiaAbundant light, every convenience, and right on a private beach!
Left on 12/08/2011 for a stay in August 2011
We were so pleased with our choice as we needed lots of space and modern conveniences in a beach location. The privacy and super comfortable beds made 1st Dibs a "fall off the end of the earth" vacation that we can't wait to repeat. The house itself was elegant yet cozy and the location was near restaurants and a beautiful national park. Check out the fresh seafood you can purchase 1 hour after its caught and throw on the grill. Beach lover's paradise!

Glenside, PAThis was the most relaxing vacation I've ever had!
Left on 11/27/2011 for a stay in August 2011
If you want to take a vacation with your family and not have to spend a lot of money (unless you want to), this is the place to go. The house is huge, plenty of room for multiple families and for kids to play. The beach is your back yard which means not having to lug heavy coolers to and from;if you need something it's only a few feet away. There are no boardwalks or rides to have to take the kids to and honestly, they won't even miss it. The weather was perfect and so was the water. It was the perfect get-away!
