Tallahassee FLGazebo best thing, still needs serious repair
Left on 07/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012
Ah, we have stayed at Memory Maker many times over the years. It is a basic beach house, so don't expect a luxury place like some of the new places on the island...but they rent for 3 times as much. I agree with the review that MM needs paint and repairs, but I also don't know if that would make them raise the price on one of the most affordable beachfront houses.
The gazebo is by far the best thing about this house. You can be close to the water and the beach without going all the way there. Watch the kids play, but stay closer to the house. Breezy and pleasant. Every house should have one on their boardwalk. They have done some repair of the railing, but the palm thatch roof is seriously in need of attention. Much has blown off and the sun comes through in lots of places. My athletic daughter climbed up and stuck some fronds in, but they weren't secured and blew off the next day. So Management, please get this repaired...it makes up for a lot of problems with the house.
The other real problem is kind of a safety issue and could be easily helped. The boardwalk is very old and was built in flat stages, unlike newer ones that are all one level. This means there is a step up or down every 6 ft or so and the weathered wood makes it hard to see them. Painting the transition with yellow paint would be easy and helpful. Not a good house for someone with mobility problems.
Otherwise, I love MM. It is showing its age, but it is reasonably comfortable and well positioned. The kitchen is quite well equipped. Bathrooms are small. Beds are very comfortable. The pecky cypress paneling in the living room is charming and rare. This is a little funky, older beach house, St. George the way it used to be before it got all gentrified. If the owners did a little bit of repair most people would be pretty pleased with their choice, I think. -

Austin TexasThe Gazebo and the View Perect-The house poor condition
Left on 05/23/2012 for a stay in May 2012
This house is unique primarily due to its gazebo. As an author, my main reason for bringing my family here was so I could work on my manuscript as my family enjoyed the beach. This worked perfectly.
Families with older less sun worshiping members and dogs will find the gazebo truly is the winner here.
The bad
This house is in poor shape. Paint is peeling, screens have clear stain splashed all over it, some lights don't work, holes in soffit, rusted out useless grills are essentially garbage, giving the entire place a low class feel as if the owner does not treasure or have pride in the home. They should. It is superbly located on one of the most beautiful islands on the planet.
Even the palm fronds on the gazebo are falling off.
My suggestion is a invest in the property. Tidy it up, repair those minor things that detract from its aesthetics.Response from Resort Vacation Properties of St. George Island - 06/15/2012

The house was perfect for what we needed. We enjoyed ST. George Island and the fact that it is pet friendly. The beaches were beautiful, food choices were great, the atmosphere laid back and relaxing. It was by far one of our most memorable vacations and certainly the first one in a very long time in which we simply just relaxed. Te staff at Resort Vacation Properties were simply the best at customer service. Friendly, explained everything, and the best thing the fastest check in ever!!! They also took time to assist me with the exact house I needed. We simply unlocked the door and everything was ready.

Atlanta, GAComfortable home, great location, great for dogs, love the gazeb
Left on 01/23/2012 for a stay in November 2011
We have stayed at Memory Maker three times. We like it because it has sort of a cabin feel to it. It's casual and comfortable. It has a great setup for dogs - a screened porch, then an open deck with a walk way leading to the beach. There used to be a gate closing the walkway off so the dogs couldn't bolt off the deck, but the last time we were there the deck railing had been completely rebuilt and the gate was gone. We had a baby gate with us and that worked fine.
I like the way the house is laid out - the two "master" bedrooms face the beach. You can lie in bed and watch the sun rise over the Gulf, and if you open the windows you can hear the surf all night.
We loved sitting on the gazebo in the evening with a glass of wine.
We also like the fact that Memory Maker has a Weber grill instead of a park style grill.
My only complaint was that the TV remote in the living room barely worked. Maybe it's been replaced by now.

We loved the spot and are returning next February. We want a house with one or two other bedrooms but not one that sleeps over twenty ! We found a good alternative to the rather "camp" spot we had this year in the rental right next door. Unfortunately it is with Collins not with you folks and that is only because that is how the house is listed. We have nothing but good to say about Vacation Rentals.
Many thanks

We have been vacationing on St. George Island for 11 years, and this is our favorite house yet. It was perfect for me and my husband and one dog--in fact, there was more room then we needed. We absolutely loved the gazebo, and spent each early evening there, after a day spent on the beach, sipping a chilled glass of wine in the coolness of the shade. The home is very cozy, the screened porch was lovely, and my husband--a die-hard charcoal grill man-- loved the Weber grill! We plann on renting this lovely home again this year!

I have 2 young kids and a dog that my husband and I brought to SGI. We've stayed in a lot of different houses there and think this is one of the better ones we've stayed at. It's smaller but big enough for 2 families. I loved the gazebo and the convenience to the beach. The interior is rustic but has a lot of charm.

Albany, GAA Memory Maker!
Left on 01/07/2010 for a stay in September 2009
Every time I visit St. George I find another reason why I love it there. The Memory Maker is a great place to stay if you have a large family or if its only one couple. I really enjoyed sitting out on the Gazebo early in the morning watching the sun come up or late in the afternoon watching the dolphins swim by. My dogs truly enjoy the beach and exploring the dunes. I will definately be back to St. George next year. The only negative about this house, is that there are several things outside that need repair. Some of the decking needs replacing just from weather damage.

The location was great. The boardwalk to the beach was nice. The gazebo was terrific. The cottage needed an upgrade--it was just well used and needed upgrading in the kitchen and floors, but because the wood floors were not kept well it felt dirty although I don't think they were.

Thank you for taking the time to share your vacation rental feedback with us. We are pleased that you found the location of Memory Maker well suited to your needs. We apologize that the home didn’t meet your expectations in other ways. We are pleased to inform you that the kitchen has had a minor facelift including a new refrigerator. We’re sorry that the flooring didn’t meet your expectations. This is an older beach cottage and the wood floors in this home are made of a natural wood plank and the walls are covered in native cypress. Should you choose to visit St. George Island in the future, we hope you will allow us to find a home for you that exceeds your expectations.

Left on 07/02/2009 for a stay in June 2009
We have rented from Resort for several years and have ALWAYS been satisfied with the homes we rented. This year was an exception. We chose Memory MAker because it had 4 bedrooms, a gazebo, pet friendly, beachfront and it was in our price range. Our check in was quick. When we arrived at the house one of the 2 keys did not work. Upon opening the door an odor Musty, cat litter?? greeted us We proceeded to unload our cars. I had been told there was a pantry and there is but, it's locked up for the owners use. That doesn't deter us. We cleaned off a couple of shelves in the laundry area and voila...a pantry.
Next to unpack in the bedrooms. The closets in two master rooms had curtains with a rod up real high with a wicker dresser beneath the rod. We deal with that with a little creativeness. One of the dressers drawers fell apart and my son in law had to work on it.Next down to the beach with my 81 yr. old mom in law. After pushing all the over grown vines off the board walk we made it to the water. Upon returning to the the house my Mom in law grabs ahold of the rail on the board walk and it falls off.Thank GOD I was there and she did not fall. Back at the house we open a bottle of wine to find only 1 wine glass, the AC froze up, 1 pot holder, lights not working under counter top, toilet stopped up,other railings falling down,AC filters filthy, welcome mats torn, ceiling fan in LR about to fall down, fingers smashed in front door..poor installation of screen door, head badly banged on front light and welcome mats tattered. Resort was very prompt in addressing all of these issues.I met housekeeping, maintenance, electrians, landscaping, plumbers and they were VERY nice and helpful.
The good things about the house are the views, especilly after landscaping cut back some overgrowth. The living room sofas were wonderful. The 2 baths had nice closets.Location is great, screenedporch with swings. Have stayed in nicer homes for a lot less money.Could be a doll house with TLC. -

When we first arrived at the house there was a hole where the bolt lock should have been. No one said anything when we signed in and received our keys. A man showed up within a half hour or so and fixed it but thought we should have been told. Then on deciding where everyone was going to sleep we were checking out bathrooms. One of the two was dirty - had not been cleaned at all. I called the office and another man showed up to clean the bathroom. One of the women was talking to him and he made the statement"he wasn't Martha Stewart"!! Didn't think that was to appropiate.
Other than that the house was fine. We have stayed in less expensive ones that were nicer than this one but we did like the gazebo and the walk to the beach. -

The house has a breathtaking view of the gulf which is a really big selling point. It was nicely equipped; the boardwalk down to the beach was a huge plus, and the gazebo was a nice touch...a good place to spend some time out of the sun yet still be near the beach. With four bedrooms and two baths, the house held me and my family quite nicely. Be aware, however, that one bedroom has only one set of bunkbeds, so it's great for kids, but not so great for two adults. All in all, it was a great house that I would rent again.

Realizing that you pay premium for beach front, there are many other homes that rent for less. This home is very old when finally viewed up close (pictures can be deceiving. Bedrooms are quite small with very little closet or dresser space. Bathrooms are 1960's vintage. The kitchen is not as good as other houses we've rented before. For a four bedroom house, patio furniture was sparce. Broken furniture was still on the deck. There is no concrete parking under the house for those who don't like to track sand into car, house, etc.
We rented this house late, so the choices for beach front in our price range were limited. We would not rent this house again. Resort Vacation Properties was very good in handling the minor issues we had duirng the monthly rental. We will have no problem with working through them again. -

Left on 01/16/2009 for a stay in May 2008
Memory Maker is a nice home with a large living area looking out
onto the beach. It's not far from the little island business area
(walking distance, actually), but it still feels "away" enough. My
husband and I never travel without our golden retriever, Caddy
Goldtop, and this home is very accommodating for dogs. We
especially enjoyed the gazebo and private walkway to the beach.
Caddy could play in the water, then stretch out beneath the
gazebo's thatched roof and enjoy the great ocean breezes blowing
through. We all did!
Our only disappointment was the screened porch. We love eating
outdoors, but there was no table on the porch, as the space is
taken up by two over-sized swings. We improvised a bit with the
benches on the open deck where there was a shady spot in time for
dinner. Not ideal, but we didn't drive 17 hours to the beach to eat
indoors!
All in all, the house makes for a great beach getaway. Our
reservations for this year are already made! -
