I have stayed at Solaris before so this felt like coming home. I was surprised to see that not much had changed. The view from the patio and overlooking the pool are still as beautiful as ever. However, the old furniture and very few renovations left me with a bittersweet feeling. The wide open courtyard with lots of plants attracted lots of insects and for some that was a challenge. That being said I still enjoyed my stay at Solaris. The combination of excellent views, a beautiful pool, a low rental cost, and all the amenities that you would need resulted in a relaxing satisfying vacation .

After a long day of flying and a ferry ride from St Thomas, our family was met in St John by a representative from Catered To. She pack up all our luggage and helped us get to the car rental agency. She then led the way up the winding roads to Solaris Villa. That roads are an adjustment but after a few trips we had no problem getting to the Villa after a long day at the beach. Solaris was the perfect Villa for our family of 8. There were 4 separate living quarters which was just right and we used the large patio to have a great bar-b-que night. Solaris had many amenties like beach towells, coolers, beach chairs and we used them all. The 60' pool is beautiful. Solaris is very close to the only gas station in Cruz Bay and very near the only grocery store. Cruz Bay is very fun with many great bars and restaurants but parking is a challenge. We traveled all over the island and snorkeled and swam in many of the bays. The only problem we had were many, many bug bites. We would recommend bug spray every day especially at the beach.
Solaris is an older Villa in need of rejuventation with maybe new furniture and bedding but it still was perfect for our family. We loved being there and our vacation went by way too quickl.

This was our 3rd visit to St John and 3rd time using Catered To, each time has had great service from meeting us at Cruz Bay to printing out our boarding passes at their office before leaving. Solaris is a great house (pictures on the website don't do justice to the views) with plenty of space. Breakfasts on the deck and relaxing afternoon cocktails by the pool before going out to dinner, it was a great vacation.

We have dealt with Catered To several times, and in fact rented Solaris several years ago with great pleasure, but this last visit was a disappointment because the property has deteriorated somewhat, and equally important the quality of management care was poor.
a. The ceiling fan in the main bedroom was inoperative.
b. The air conditioning in the main bedroom (needed because fan wasn't working) made a racket which precluded sleeping.
c. The gas grill has seen better times by many a year.
d. Several screens in the doors to the community room were torn.
In my opinion, management ought to have been aware of these defects and chosen to cure them with timely maintenance, and in this sense the condition of the property reflects poorly on Catered To Vacation Property Management. We would like to mention that each of the items your have noted have been addressed. We are also preparing to replace the grill. We would like to mention that Solaris currently has several projects scheduled to improve the villa. We do hope that you would consider returning once the work on the villa has been completed after late summer 2011. -

Solaris choose us. We had reserved another villa and it was double booked, so we ended up here. Excellent location just past the Westin outside Cruz Bay. The views are great and we were in the pool a lot. The place does need some updating. Looks like it has just been painted. Lots of seating all around the compound. It is well kept by Catered to. The wall air conditioners in the bedrooms are noisy. We turned them off and used the ceiling fans. The driveway is steep and the parking is an adventure.

Quiet, private, spectacular views. We loved the infinity pool, the spacious living areas, just a mile or two from shopping, restaurants, activities in Cruz Bay. We would stay at Solaris again if we retuned to St John.

My review is mixed on this villa. While we liked the overall layout of the villa (separate buildings, each with a bedroom with an attached bathroom, all surrounding the main building which housed the kitchen and living room), the huge pool, beautiful views, and nice balconies, we were not pleased by the lack of overall cleanliness of the villa. The biggest complaints were around critters found in the bedrooms/bathrooms (spiders, geckos, frogs, other bugs, a dead scorpion). One of the bathrooms has an open-air shower, which may sound like a cool idea until you realize that this is likely where all of the bugs/critters are coming from. I suggested to the rental agency that they might want to consider having the villa fumigated to try to improve the situation. We also found the air conditioners to be old and extremely noisy and the walls inside the bedrooms/bathrooms and around the pool to be in major need of a paint job. The only other complaint was around the smell in one of the bedrooms which took 3 days to get rid of.
Other than that the ammenities were exactly as we expected. A nice gas grill, nice kitchen, and decent furniture. Overall, the place could use some updating, but it wasn't too bad for the price that we paid. I would probably suggest looking at other villas if you can afford it. I'm pretty sure that none of the 4 women that stayed at the villa would come back based on this issues mentioned above. For me, I think you've got to expect some of the issues with the critters, just based on the location.
One other thing to note is that I would strongly recommend that you choose another car rental company other than Cool Breeze (recommended by Catered To..). We rented two jeeps and neither had working turn signals, and one had bald tires, terrible brakes and the a/C was not working. The company was not accommodating when we pointed out the issues with the vehicles. The price was comparable to other vehicles on the island so I would have expected the quality and service to be the same as well.
Even with the issues mentioned above, we enjoyed our stay and will definitely be coming back to St. John in the near future (just in a different villa). -

First of all, Catered To is such a helpful group. Anything we needed to make
the house more comfortable was dispatched or seen to. As always, they give
us a friendly and helpful greeting at dock. We have stayed in this home
several times, and while it is getting up there in age, is very well furnished and
maintained and has one of the best pools on the island. We love the view from
the deck at night, and the kitchen appliances are new and very good. The
location is convenient to Cruz Bay and the north shore beaches, though the
winding and hilly roads leading to it are always a challenge even after driving
on St. John for over 20 years, as is the drive-way and parking the car. Also, as
it overlooks Gifft Hill, the screeching traffic and truck honking and braking
sounds can be a bit overwhelming - but only in short bursts. Much of the time
and especially evenings and night, it is very quiet. The sporadic noise and the
mosquitoes are the only negatives we can come up with. And that's probably
standard for most places on the island. Traffic has increased considerably
over the years. We would return here again and again. -

Work with Catered To Vacation Property Management and stayed at Solaris in Feb 2010. The experience was excellent in all regards. Catered met us at the Car Barge and escorted us directly to the property. Shows us all the accommodations and provide some excellent vacation advise.
Solaris was wonderful. Separate living and bedrooms quarters and great views in all directions. Also a pools of wonder. We are swimmers and got great enjoyment using the 60 ft pool.
While there we had some issues with the TV service, which Catered had addressed the same day.
We recommend this location and would stay again - hopefully soon. -

On my 60th birthday, I took 2 of my daughter's and their husbands to
St John's to help celebrate my birthday. We all loved Solaris. It was a
beautiful house, with wonderful views. Everything was in working order
and the people at Catered To were helpful and very friendly. I would
recommend this house and the "Catered To" management to anyone.
It was a wonderful trip!
