Prince Edward IslandUnbelieveable view, amazing villa, wonderful vacation!
Left on 04/08/2013 for a stay in March 2013
We had the privilege to stay at Drake's View villa in March 2013. This villa is absolutely amazing! From the superb view, to the spacious property, there is everything you need or want in a vacation here.
When we arrived on the island, we were met by the property manager, Fernando, who led us to the grocery store and then up to the villa. Where else would you find a property manager who would wait for you to get groceries, and even transport them? (as well as some of our luggage as our vehicle was too full already!). Upon arrival, our party of 6 (all adults, plus one child) was shown the property layout by Fernando. He encouraged us to call with any questions or concerns. Everyone was blown away with the unbelievable view upon arrival. We had, of course, seen many pictures, and knew the reputation of the view, but pictures can not fully do justice to how amazing it is.
For our first night, we ate in and immediately noticed that absolutely everything you would need for meal preparation/dining was available. It's a rare thing to find a place which has everything from a blender, to a cheese grater, full spice rack, microwave, frying pans, coffee machine, toaster, etc! There was also plenty of dishes and cutlery, which was convenient, as we never had a shortage. While we did eat out sometimes, we enjoyed eating at the villa, either barbecuing or using the kitchen facilities. The wide range of items available made it very easy for everyone to prepare something they liked, whether it be a quick snack of eggs and toast or a larger meal.
The rest of the villa was equally impressive, both in terms of size, detail and appearance. From the living room area, with a large abundance of books available on topics including the local tourism, local marine life, (coral, fish, etc), and even a album showing the building of the home, to the pool area with pool toys/floats, outdoor shower, and closely located bathroom. There was also beautiful artwork throughout the home, and stunning viewpoints throughout the property (many different balconies, sitting areas, stone stairway, etc). The property landscaping was also immaculate. There were beautiful flowers, plants, and trees all around, as well as a hammock where you could look out across the mountains.
Our group was also very impressed with the beds, we all agreed they were among the most comfortable we have ever slept in!
We found the villa to have tons of space, and could have easily accommodated more guests with us without any trouble. There were lots of bathrooms which was convenient for getting ready in the morning. Lots of space for everyone and no one ever had to wait turns. Everything we would need including an abundance of high quality beach and bath towels, and even a variety of sizes of coolers were available. This was greatly appreciated for our many trips to the beaches.
In summary, we clearly immensely enjoyed this villa and the island of St. John. We would highly recommend it to anyone who has the chance to stay there. Nothing can beat sitting on the balcony on a sunny morning, sipping a coffee and looking out over the mountains and ocean.
Writing this makes us very lonesome for St John and Drake's View villa. -

We spent a glorious week in St. John at Drake's View. We can't recommend it enough for just about every reason you can imagine...every thing that you would want out of a vacation home is here for your enjoyment. We did a lot of research into villa rentals on the island - it was almost an obsession for 3 months. After all of that research we selected Drake's View and all that time, effort and energy was rewarded.
The villa was immaculate, well appointed, impeccably designed and decorated, comfortable and fulfilled every expectation. We wanted for nothing. I am absolutely serious when I say the only thing I could complain about was that the kitchen knives needed replacing - I like to cook and they were rather dull. The kitchen had everything else you might need.
The view will literally take your breath away. We stared at it for hours and hours. Every sunrise was worth waking up early for and was captivating, although dragging yourself out of the Tempurpedic beds was a real challenge! We filmed motion capture of several sunrises, including one where a small rain cell made its way across the passage and up the mountain, illuminated from behind by the rising sun. So beautiful it provided a sense of jaw-dropping wonder.
Every morning started with a dip in the wonderful pool, every evening relaxing in the comfortable den or in the hot tub. Really, you can't help but relax here. Dorothy and Fernando were wonderful to work with and made sure every step in the process was easy. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to anyone. You will go home rested, happy and thankful for the time you spent there.Response from Ellen and Edward Roberts - 11/09/2012

Thank you for your great review. We are so glad that you enjoyed Drake's View and the island. We think that St. John is a special island with it's unspoiled beaches and great hiking. We really appreciate your detailed review. We will certainly replace the knives. It is always a challenge to keep sharp knives in a rental. We hope you will consider a return trip to Drake's View to check out new additions to the garden and house improvements. We offer a 10% discount to renters returning within a year of their previous stay.

We have rented many vacation homes in many places and Drake's view is the first one we have honestly considered returning to. The location speaks for itself, and the details of the house in most of the previous reviews are spot on (the good ones at least). The management (Fernando and Dorothy) is very modern, efficient and friendly. Thank you for making our family vacation and my 48th birthday unforgettable.

Left on 06/25/2012 for a stay in February 2012
My husband and I were fortunate enough to return to St John for the 2nd time in one year and stayed at Drake's View Villa. The house was perfect! The weather didn't cooperate this time around but we still had a fabulous stay. The caretakers were wonderful and the house was pristinely clean. The beds were super comfortable and the house had ever ammenity to make you comfortable and feel right at home. This villa was just as described but better! The large kitchen had all of the utensils one would need for cooking a large meal. The views from just about every room in the house were breathtaking and there was always a wonderful breeze that we only needed the bedroom aC once during our 12 day stay. Staying at Drake's View Villa made us feel like we were at home away from home! On a clear day you can see at least 3 other islands if not more! Sitting on the front veranda enjoying coffee while relaxing and reading was one of the highlights of our stay! Bathrooms are spacious and super clean! Poor area is spectacular. Hot tub a bonus! Thank you to Dorothy, Fernando, and a very special thanks to the owners for allowing us to stay in your beautiful, supremely equipped home! If you stay at Drake's View Villa you will feel like you are in paradise and you will not be disappointed! Dvv is on the north shore but it does not take long to get to town, for gas, or groceries. The only thing we could not find was umbrellas as it was unusually rainy throughout our stay but hopefully if you stay at DVV you won't need an umbrella!! I would recommend this villa highly to anyone looking for a fabulous vacation home to rent! That comes from someone who is extremely picky and OCD about cleanliness and feeling comfortable while away! I slept like a baby every night! You will not go wrong by staying at Drake's View Villa! Enjoy!!!

Thank you for this great review. Sounds like you appreciate all the same things we love about the house and island. I think it is a real test of a house if you are comfortable staying in it during rainy weather. Usually there is an umbrella(s) and there some ponchos in the utility closet in the kitchen. We will check into this. We hope you will consider a return visit. Guests returning within a year of their stay receive a 10% discount.

We are a family of 9 and were in St.John's to celebrate my 65th birthday as the clan matriarch. Drake's View was perfect in every way...well located for snorkeling our favorite spots, close to Coral Bay for terrific dining opprotunities, and well equipped for relaxation and just "chillin". We made wonderful memories and cannot wait to come back to this lovely villa. The photos do not do the villa or the views from the vill justice. The verandahs and porches are fabulous for watching rainbows, boats, clouds, birds, and for just appreciating it all.

This is the first rental property that meet and exceeded our expectations. Whilst, high from the sights and sounds of the beaches, the views were simply unbelievable. From the stars at night, to a rainbow marching towards the home from the valley. We have never spent as much time at a rental property or ate in more often. We walked to Le Chateau de Bordeaux Café for lunch and continued to enjoy the views. The on island management team was great! Thanks Fernando for your attention.

FloridaDrake's View - May 2011
Left on 06/10/2011 for a stay in May 2011
The photos of Drake's View do not lie. In fact, they don't adequately depict how beautiful this home really is. The villa is perfectly situated atop Bordeaux Mountain, a short distance off Centerline Rd., the only road that cuts completely across St. John. There are no terribly curvy roads nor outrageously steep driveways getting to the villa. You are close to north shore beaches and Coral Bay.
A huge wooden door opens into a large main living area that consisted of a kitchen with table & eight chairs; a living room with couches & comfy chairs; and a more formal dining table with eight chairs. High vaulted ceilings & rich dark & light hardwoods filled the entire room. The walls are adorned with beautiful pieces of art created by local St. John artists (I loved this aspect of the home).
A beautiful L-shaped staircase led to the lower level housing three equal bedrooms with bathrooms, each with a beautiful titled shower. The laundry room was on the lower level as well, along with a pool powder room, the entrance to the pool & hot tub (note that there is not a restroom facility on the main level). The fourth bedroom is housed in a separate cottage steps away & was similar in size & décor to the rest of the villa.
Both the upper & lower levels of the house featured a long porch with chairs to sit & take in the view. Ahhh - the view! Words cannot describe the view. What a wonderful thing to wake up to in the morning. Grabbing that first cup of coffee & just sitting & looking at the view was probably my favorite thing of the entire trip.
The villa is surrounded by beautiful plants, trees and flowers. We couldn't find anything about the villa we didn't like. On island villa managers, Fernando & Dorothy Micheletti, were fantastic, too. Responsive, friendly & caring. Exactly what you want when renting a vacation villa.
We will return to Drake's View. It is the perfect villa located in the perfect spot for a wonderful week on St. John.

Drake's View is an absolutely wonderful property in an incredible destination. Drake's View has what must be one of the best views in the world -- the house sits atop Bordeaux Mountain with stunning panoramic views of St. John and the British Virgin Islands. One could do nothing other than luxuriate in the view and enjoy the fabulous amenities and comforts of the Villa, but the rest of St. John beckons. A car is truly a must as the property is a significant distance from town, beaches and many of the great offerings of the island. The house is spacious, well-designed, comfortable, clean and first rate in every respect. The owners have provided great amenities -- from a well stocked kitchen, to tempurpedic beds in all rooms, to extremely informative binders of information about the house, the island, restaurants, etc. In short it was a Villa that felt like home (only much much better) from the instant we arrived. Finally, we would be remiss if we didn't mention the fabulous Fernando who takes care for the property and went above and beyond the call of duty to make our stay enjoyable.

My family and I have utilized Vrbo on several occasions for vacation rentals. Sometimes the text and photos accurately portray the property you've just rented. On other occasions, they do not. In the case of Drake's View, I would have to say that the photos and text cannot adequately capture the scale of the location, the thoughtfulness of the design, nor the attention to detail that the owners and managers provide for their guests.
My family and I let out a collective gasp as we descended the steep drive which only hints at the view from the multiple decks. From inside, the large expanse of windows in the great room allow the spectacular views of the island and encircling waters to flood the interior. The multiple patios and exterior lighting allowed us to enjoy both interior and exterior spaces night and day.
But what really makes Drakes View so special is the care and attention to detail that everyone associated with the property exhibits. Dorothy was very professional and timely in all her communications; Fernando, the manager of the property, was at our disposal should any problems arise (but of course, none did); and finally it's obvious that the owners care a great deal about the property and keep it very well maintained. There was not a hint of deferred maintenance about the property. Multiple binders provide valuable information about the area; restaurants, maps, hikes, snorkelling, sailing adventures..even photos of the property under construction.
Finally, we loved the location. St. John was just what we were looking for; no crowds, spectacular beaches, great snorkelling, kayaking, and hiking. And the location of the property...closer to the quieter side of the island...was ideal. We only wished we had more time!Response from Ellen and Edward Roberts - 01/21/2011

After two stays at Drake's View, I can firmly conclude that it is among my favorite places on the planet. I know there are other exquisite houses and islands to visit but I am reluctant to experiment at this point. Yes, it is out of the way and hard to get to but that's half the fun! Once there, it's hard to leave. The view, the breeze, the airy rooms... it's bliss. I have only one reservation after this past stay: the 4 AM rooster crow-off. I was abed by 9 PM every night so it didn't annoy me THAT much, but for any carousers, I dare say it would be a buzz-harsher!I gather the wild chickens have taken over the island which is charming in its way...but a hard-working vacationer likes to sleep.
The following is from my daughter, age 8:It's awesome!Response from Ellen and Edward Roberts - 07/16/2010

We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and we love return visitors to Drake's View!
We're very sorry about your rooster experience. In fact, there was an article just today in the St. John newspaper about the feral chicken problem and the island-wide efforts to correct it. As you know, wild animals are a part of life on St. John, but we want you to know that we're addressing this issue specifically at Drake's View!
Hope to see you again in the near future! -

We have stayed here five times over a 6 year period. The house accomodates equal treatment to four couples. Every bedroom has a tremendous view, it's own very nice bathroom, and direct access to an outside balcony that stretches the length of the house with 25 to 30 mile views over Coral Bay, Tortola, Virgin Gorda etc. It is at the top of Bordeaux Mountain which means it always has a breeze and is usually a little cooler than ocean side locations. It is a very short walk to Cafe Bordeaux.
It has easy access to all sides of the island and all beaches are within an easy drive which gives you great choices of where to snorkel or hand out. It is also easy to reach all the restaurants on the island.
It is very private and quiet and the pool and hot tub, like the house, have great views of Drakes Channel. They also are a great place to have cocktails after a busy day of shopping, laying on the beach or snorkeling. The house has a large kitchen and hugh living and dining area so it is as easy to cook in as to eat out. The house also has a washer and dryer so laundry isn't an issue.
The house, the view, the location are so nice we confess we spent more than one day just reading, hanging out by the pool, and looking at the view. Followed by cocktails and a great home cooked meal it was the perfect day. -

This was our second stay at Drake's view & was just as relaxing & fun as the first. The views from the back porch of the British Virgin Islands were awesome - sometimes pictures just can't convey the full beauty. There was nothing like it getting up early in the morning with a good book & a cup of coffee and the views of the Carribean. One could lounge around the pool all day & do nothing or ride down the mountainside to go snorkeling. We would highly recommend it and look forward to returning in the near future.
