294265Amazing Contemporary in St John

My partner and I stayed at Casa Mare for a week in april 2012. Just the two of us...
The house was completed in 2005 after six years of design and construction by the owners. It's a very modern house on St John, where there are not many houses this new or this contemporary. It is well conceived and designed, with four completely separate bedroom suites, all with queen beds and all with great views. The master bedroom has a deck (unfurnished) and one of the other bedroom suites has a terrace with a table and chairs. There are large living areas, including a living room and dining room/kitchen with double height ceilings and an office (next to the living room) and a loft (overlooking living room).
The house is painted white inside and out and has stone tile floors throughout. There is glass everywhere, but the nearest neighbors are far across chocolate hole (pond), so privacy is not an issue. The house is furnished in a contemporary style, largely with furniture from Ligne Roset. It's feel is more like a NYC urban penthouse than a cosy vacation home, so if you are looking for something that is warm, traditional, or Caribbean in style, this is not the right house for you.

The location is very good, close to the Starfish Market (which has the best selection of items on the island) and to all of the Cruz Bay restaurants (try Fatty Crabs!). You definitely need a rental car (try Breeze; i was not impressed with Paris rentals, which the agent recommended).
On the downside, the wireless internet is slow (as it seems to be throughout the island). Luckily, my unlocked at&T; phone worked fine as a wireless modem; otherwise, the slow internet speed would have been a problem. And I personally felt the bed in the master bedroom was too soft; I preferred the firmer beds in the other three bedroom suites. I would also add a few umbrellas or other ways of creating shade on the pool deck and the roof top deck to make them more useable throughout the day.
And i will add one warning: The car parking area (for two cars) is at the very top of the house and there are lots of steps going down to the front entrance, so this house is not good for people who have difficulty going up and down steps.
But, that's not a lot of criticism. The house is quite nice. I would stay there again. -

We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay at Casa Mare. The house far exceeded our expectations in every way imaginable. We loved the modern and minimal decor, the slate floors and the large comfy living room which we had a hard time extracting ourselves from. Movies and games were always being played in there and when they weren't, books were being read and children were snuggling with their parents on the couch which could seat our whole family of five. The real treat for us was that each of our kids had their own bedroom and bathroom. With such a quiet and widespread house we were all able to sleep late without disturbing each other. The pool and the deck were perfect at the end of a beach day and the view from the deck made us feel as though we were in the top of the forest. Every amenity was present from kitchen to bathroom and delivered in a way that made it hard to leave. We are still dreaming of the day that we can build our own Casa Mare. If you are thinking about staying here, don't think anymore. The house is perfect and the location is too. Close to town, not too hight up in the hills like some other houses and just fifteen minutes to the North Shore beaches, if you can manage to leave the house.
