History of the House Jako:
In the middle of the XVIII century the land on the which the house was built was occupied by a temporary palace of Empress Elizabeth. After dismantling of the palace there were the royal kitchens and the Throne Hall. The Throne Hall was then given to sculptor E. Falcone for work on the monument to Peter the Great also know as the 'Bronze Horseman'.
Falcone moved here in 1766 & he rebuilt the building which housed the former palace kitchen. He set up a scaffold for his work in the yard. In 1773, Falcone was visited by his friend the french philosopher Diderot, he stayed in the house until 1778, when he returned to France.
After the departure of the French the site housed a warehouse of marble for the construction of a number of buildings which gave rise to the naming of the laneway at the side of the building: Kirpichny (brick) lane. In 1801 the site owned by a merchant, the Prussian consul in St. Petersburg, when a residential two-storey house was built. In 1822 his heirs divided the land in two, the side adjacent to the Bolshaya Morskaya Street in 1836 was sold to architect Paul Jaco who designed many historical buildings in St. Petersburg.
In the years 1837-1838 Jaco built the current four-story building. Iron girders were used in the construction of first floor windows - an innovation in the local civil engineering. In 1842 Faberge started his business with the opening of a workshop in the basement. During the 1860s Chief Marshal Count Ivan M. Tolstoy lived in hosue Jaco, who had been former Senator and Minister of Posts and Telegraphs, a member of the State Council. Jaco house remained in the his family until 1917.
In the 1930s the Kirpichny (brick) lane end of the house become the 'House of Artists', or an artists commune.

Washington, DCAwesome apartment!!!
Left on 09/25/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Stayed for a week in early September in this great apartment. Spacious and recently remodeled. Perfect locations - one block to the metro and Nevisky Prospect - 3-5 minute walk to the Hermaitage Museum. The owners, Peter and Yana, live in Ireland but still provided helpful information and Tatiana serves as your local greeter and host and all do a speldid job. Highly recommend this place to all - you won't be disappointed.

Left on 09/07/2012 for a stay in August 2012
The apartment is immaculate. The location is ideal (although a little noisy!).
The administration of the rental is very professional and easy. The amenities are also very good. It was very convenient to have wifi, a t.v., washer, and even a local phone if needed. Our local tour guide was quite impressed by our accommodations too!
Would definitely recommend. -

Left on 08/10/2012 for a stay in August 2012
Our entire family of 8 persons stayed in Peter & Yana's apartment on Bolshaya Morskaya this month in august 2012, and we loved it!!
The location of the apartment was great -right in the center of the city and a short walk from the Hermitage and all the center city museums & attractions and only 1 minute walk from admiralteiskaya metro station. The service was wonderful, and hospitality was warm. We were treated royally! The apartment also had a nice kitchen with all the appliances including microwave, fridge, stove, oven, & dishwasher; also a washing machine to wash clothes plus towels, soap, hair products & other useful travel items.
We greatly recommend this as luxuruous center-city accomodations with great service!!!

Durham, NCThis is a great apartment
Left on 07/06/2012 for a stay in May 2012
All was exactly as described. The owners are very helpful, and of course honest. The apartment is very clean, tastefully decorated, and and the kitchen is a treat. The location was incredible -- just off Nevsky Prspt, a few hundred meters from the Hermitage. Restaurants very convenient, as was food and beer/wine/spirits shopping. The McDonalds downstairs was not an issue -- even at night we could never hear noise -- since the walls are so thick. We were there for a week, and the apartment made life easy for us.

RiihimÄki, FinlandLuxury in central St Petersburg
Left on 02/24/2012 for a stay in June 2011
We, three work colleagues from Finland, stayed in this apartment for three days - and wished we could have stayed longer. The apartment is situated literally next to Nevsky prospekt which makes it a perfect base for walking around the heart of St. Petersburg. For example, it takes only five minutes to walk to the Hermitage and ten minutes to the Kazan Cathedral, where is also the nearest metro station to take you to further away places. The apartment itself is beautiful. Each room is decorated and furnished with a real sense of style - and with love and care. There is absolutely nothing we could complain about the apartment. We wanted to move in!
