Description from the owner
Les Castellans has been our home in Provence for the last 25 years. Just an hour by car from Nice or Marseille, the house is set in the countryside, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The little village of St Antonin is just 10 minutes walk, and the town of Lorgues, with its well known market, a short drive away. The guest wing is completely separate and independent with its own entrance and private garden There are two terraces for outdoor living and a really spacious interior with two bedrooms, a large sitting room and a fully equipped kitchen. We are usually in the main house, and are very happy to advise our guests so that they can...Read more

Additional Location Information
The Var is the largest of the departments of France, but one of the least densely populated away from the coastal strip. The countryside around Les Castellans is of forested hills with vines and olive growing on the lower slopes, and lush valleys with streams and rivers running down to the sea. Lovely medieval villages are all around, each with its particular character and points of special interest. Further inland the ground rises towards the pre-Alpes with the magnificent Gorge de Verdon and below it the Lac St Croix. If you want to visit a beach, then St Tropez is less than an hour's drive away, as are Frejus and Ste Maxime.

We were more than happy with our stay at Victor and Svea's beautiful, private location in Provence. Everything was very clean and oh so roomy. If you are visiting Provence for the first time be sure to talk to Victor about the things to see and do in the area. He knows the right routes to take. This is a rural setting, but a short drive to stores, and be prepared for narrow roads (especially if you are from North america). The upstairs loft(where the bed is) have a fairly steep staircase, so anyone with limited mobility may have trouble with that, however there is a wonderful second bedroom on the main floor which may work for you. The kitchen is fully set up for cooking. You will see that the house is a bit older, so not a modern kitchen or bathroom, but absolutely functional and clean.
The gardens are beautiful, there is a swimming pool and deck for your use. We ate all our dinners at the house so that we could enjoy the scenery and indulge in the wonderful wines of the region and not worry about driving home.
You are in the country so you will hear things that go "bump" in the night. No worries. It just adds to the charm. The owners also have dogs and cats, but they are completely seperated from the guest wing rooms and yard so are no problem at all. In fact you always have a warm greeting from them. -

We were met by the owner Victor who introduced us to the guest wing and explained all the facilities available in the house. From then on he was always willing to give help or advice with any queries we had either about the wing or any other subject such as suitable walks.etc.
The house is well appointed with lounge/kitchen,bathroom which contains washing m/c,and twin bed bedroom on the ground floor. The mezzanine floor upstairs has a double bed, plenty of cupboards and drawers and is very comfortable.
There is a large garden with patio, for eating out and sunbathing and a swimming pool for relaxing when the weather is suitable.
The region is famous for its small picturesque villages and market towns. Many interesting round trips, to lakes and hills are within easy reach for a day's outing and Victor had lots of information about these.
We had mixed weather during our six week visit but thoroughly enjoyed the variety and found plenty to occupy ourselves whatever the daily situation.
All together a very enjoyable holiday. -

What a great find! And in such a wonderful location. The wing at Les Castellans is extremely comfortable with lovely gardens and beautiful views. It is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, lavender fields and forest. It is the most heavenly place. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 3 month stay. Svea and Victor are perfect hosts - very likeable, kind and helpful and they know the area inside out.
A heartfelt thank you to both of you. You have created a very special place indeed. Highly recommended!

Staying here has been like having an in-house travel guide with Victor and Svea's advice we have been provided with a wealth of information and local knowledge. We were especially keen to explore walks and trails in Gorge du Verdon so Victor drove us all the way to the Gorges du Verdon northern edge, guided us over the mountains to the ancient, ruined village of Brandis, walked on through the most amazing mountain scenery to a Chapel, high in the mountains, returned to Rougon for lunch; an awesome day with a great guide. He recommended a tramp up Mt Chiran and then lent us the back packs, sleeping bags, maps and made the refuge bookings as well.
It has been more like staying at a friend's home than renting a gite from a stranger. Thank you Victor and Svea -

Left on 08/30/2012 for a stay in August 2012
The guest wing had everything we needed for a quiet, enjoyable week away. All the mod cons were present, and we explored the Lac de St Croix, Monaco, and the lovely nearby villages.
Be prepared to be very hot in the middle of august, and heat was a factor at night, though I guess any householder in the South of France would have been going through the same thing.
Overall, we'd recommend the area and the house, and the pool is a godsend! -

There is nothing bad to say about this place. The accommodation exceeded my expectations and I am usually very fussy. The wing is totally private with it's own garden, two outdoor dining areas and sun loungers. The pool is fabulous and we never felt we were intruding upon the owners, Victor & Svea who, by the way were, amazing. You need a car to fully appreciate the area but you can equally just enjoy a relaxing stay sunbathing and swimming. The little village of St antonin, which is a pleasant 10 minute walk away, has a really good restaurant and a shop that is as well equipped as the local supermarket. There is also a boulanerie for your morning bread and coissants. If you are thinking of visiting the Var region, this is a gem not to be missed.

The accommodation is very comfortable, homely, spacious and well equiped. We loved our garden area, our two separate places to eat outside and the pool. Victor and Svea are charming and helpful hosts. Our two teenagers [always hard to please] were very happy there. The house is in a great location for exploring Provence as aix, the coast, the Parc de Verdon, lavender fields and some lovely towns and villages are all within easy reach by car. The only "improvement" needed to the house is to upgrade the second bed in the garden bedroom.

We enjoyed the gardens and pool area especially but the property is homely, comfortable and spacious.
Victor and Svea were very helpful and knowledgeable about the local area and welcoming.
There is a lot to see in the area and we liked the Lac de St Croix with is crystal blue water and boat hire, there are good restaurants and plenty of walks. You can also visit Cannes, St Tropez for shopping and high life.
We mostly enjoyed chilling out in the sun with a bottle of cheap local wine and relaxing, perfect! -

Everything we needed was available. The owners were discrete, but immediately on hand to offer assistance and advice, with their extensive knowledge of the area. The house had all that we needed, with the usual challenge of blunt kitchen knives which we find in all French holiday homes, without exception!
The location is ideally positioned to visit numerous locations and being familiar with the area, we can strongly recommend Les Castellans as a location.Response from Victor and Svea Walker - 07/13/2012

Why didn't you say! I have an extensive workshop with all the facilities for making knives razor sharp. Future guests now run the risk of losing their finger tips, just by looking at the blades!

Our holiday in Les Castellans was ideal. Victor and Svea were the perfect hosts, both extremely helpful and generous with their hospitality and local knowledge, and discreet. The accomodation met all our needs and we felt extremely relaxed and at home throughout our stay.
We had many superb daytrips (thank you Victor for your excellent maps and advice!) Although you would need a car to fully enjoy all the area has to offer. Highlights included a day trip to St Tropez (via ferry from St Maxime), the local markets (see guide to whats on each day in local villages, in the visitors information folder) and the beautiful lake.
All in all a wonderful holiday and would highly recommend - although take your mosquito repellant! -

My girlfriend and I picked this villa out of hundreds/thousands... and it was truly the best pick in hind sight... The description was true to its word which may not always be the case... the villa is quiet and clean. Has everything you need for a self-catered stay. The host of friendly and offer advice on tourist activities based on your needs. A very roomy villa with an upstairs/mezzanine master bedroom and a private second room down stairs. The villa (wing) is connected but there is no entrance from the main house. It has a private entrance and easy access to the shared pool. The property is a few minutes from town for basic needs and central to numerous villages... of which each is worthy of a days trip.

Left on 03/21/2012 for a stay in November 2011
We have spent the past five months in comfort and warmth through the provence winter; we were able to sit outside to have christmas lunch on the terrace overlooking the olive groves and the vineyards. Our hosts victor and svea were always available to help without being intrusive and their local knowledge was much appreciated.
The house is located on the outskirts of the village of st antonin du Var which has a baker shop and a small supermarket which has everything you need and nothing you dont need , it is not a Tesco; I am sure the summer season is much more lively if you want with the swimming pool and the large garden but we enjoyed the peace and tranqillity with our two large dogs who loved to play with the family dogs of svea and victor. -

The house is wonderfully situated in a tranquil location, yet near a multitude of attractions and the coast. Our stay flew by far too quickly, exploring the area and returning to swim and sit outside in the sun. The house is very well equipped - the owners Victor and Svea have thought of everything you might need! They were chariming hosts and very helpful, suggesting places to visit which otherwise we may not have found. Thank you!

We had a great week in Provence staying in the Les Castellans guest wing. The accommodation is excellent for a small group and the wood-fire is great for making the place toasty. It is a good location for exploring the country-side and little towns in the Var. St Tropez is also about an hour away (if there isn't traffic). And Victor and Svea were excellent hosts and wonderfully helpful.

Left on 06/14/2011 for a stay in June 2011
We came across Les Castellans while looking for a villa with a pool, something about the place caught our eye and we kept going back to look at the website. We were initially concerned that the rented 'wing' is directly beside the main residence but this was no problem at all as the wing is totally private and has its own gardens.
A very comfortable 2 bed villa, all kitchen + lounge appliances, a BBQ, sun and shade terrace for lots of alfresco dining, safe area for the kids to play, a great pool (not cold) and very safe for small children as it is covered when not in use (New French law). Perfect for a family of 4.
Victor + Svea are wonderful hosts and were very helpful. They are very inviting and sociable.
The Village of Saint-Antonin-du-Var is a short walk through the local vineyard and down a country road. There is a post office, bakery and shop. The croissants are fabulous!
Les Castellans is a 10 minute drive from Lorgues, a lovely small market town with a handful of restaurants and a couple of bars + small supermarkets. The local market is on a Tuesday morning and is wonderful but beware the artisan food sellers, very expensive!
Les Castellans is a great base to explore from, there is a lot to do for everyone, the coast is less than 80 minutes drive, as are the mountains, The Gorge du Verdon is a must, hire a boat and really enjoy the views.
Plenty of local villages and town to see within short driving distance. Load of stuff for kids too.
Victor/Svea are very knowledgeable about the area as helped plan many days out.
I would love to go back and would not hesitate to recommend Les Castellans to anyone.

Our accommodation was more than adequate and well equipped with the pool and gardens added attractions. Our hosts were very helpful and made numerous good suggestions for things to see and do. The countryside and towns/villages were everything we had looked forward to in coming to rural Provence. The village centre and bakery was a pleasant walk although the hotel/restaurant/coffee shop was closed at the time of our visit. We would to make a return visit sometime.

Left on 05/19/2011 for a stay in May 2011
Victor & Svea were very welcoming hosts and made all the effort to help us settle in with our two little kids.
The gite is spacious and well laid out, with a terrace facing East and another South, and has all necessary amenities.
We found it safe for little kids, including garden & access to pool, not to mention their gentle & patient 4 footed friends
improvement points:
- cleanliness (eg under couches & cupboards / smelly hoover)
- inside is not very bright in case of bad weather
- plastic terrace chairs, tablecloth and bread knife could do with a replacement -

The cottage is quiet and peaceful with the village of St antonin du Var a short walk away providing all the basic needs for a relaxing winter holiday. I enjoyed exploring the area on foot and by car - the town of Lorgues is charming, and there are a number of other villages close by, each with a weekly market and well worth the short drive. -

Les Castellans is a great place to relax and the hosts are very amenable. The "wing" is comfortable and has everything you'd need. Be aware that the owners have a number of pets, which are all very friendly and won't miss an opportunity to say "hello", neither are they easily avoided. The only very minor criticism I would raise is the quality of the twin beds which are not on a par with the rest of the apartment. Overall a lovely place to stay and chill out or as a base for the many other activities available in the region. Happy to recommend this let to anyone, and the hosts are easily approachable with well developed knowledge of the area.

Victor and Svea made us extremely welcome and their advice on places to visit was invaluable. It was very lovely sitting in the sun in the garden with no sound other than the birds singing in the woods. The nearby village of St antonin was very quiet but had a fantastic boulangerie (we were out of season which may explain it) so a lot of driving was required.

We arrived on a very wet afternoon after a long drive through France. We were met by our hosts holding umbrellas and welcomed to 'Les Castillans' (the weather was not as we hoped for the first day).
The wood burning stove had been lit for us and was giving off a nice sense of well being. Svea had also obtained supplies to see us through the first few days for which we were very grateful.
The accomodation, set in a charming garden, is very spacious, comfortable and extremely well equipped,
Victor and Svea are a fount of information, giving us not only information of where to go, but what wines were worth trying, For the technies, Victor gave us free access to the broadband network, very useful!
A Michelin map of the area was provided with various interesting locations marked in relation to Les Castillans as well as sundry guides etc to help plan activities. Direct advice was always freely given. The gite is nicely situated with access to both the coast and the Gorges de Verdun - about an hour each way by car.Shopping was no problem - both the local shop and the market in Lorges supplied all our needs.
We also had great fun with the family of pets belonging to Victor and Svea,
To sum up - one of the best gites we have stayed at and absolutely charming hosts. -

A great place to "get away from it all!" We have spent many summers in the delightful home of Svea and Victor who are charming hosts ...warm, friendly and accomodating; they are never too close for comfort but always around should their expertise on walks/acitivites/restaurants etc be needed. Their guest accomodation is light and airy and very well appointed and their garden is a delight...peaceful, private and with a beautiful pool overlooking views of the vineyards of St antonin. We would have no hesitation in recommending Les Castellans both to anyone who loves peace and quiet and also to those with young children as the garden is secure, the flat has a small bedroom ideal for youngsters and the "family" of animals in the main house provides a constant source of entertainment! We shall definitely go back again.

This was our second holiday in the wing at Les Castellans. It is well located for exploring Provence from the Lavender fields and the Gorge du Verdon to the north down to the coast at Ste Maxime and St Tropez, and along the coast to Cannes and Nice. The nearby town of Lorgues is typically Provencal with good restaurants and a fantastic weekly market.
The pool is located in the mature garden with extensive views over the countryside. It is all too easy here to spend the greater part of your holiday at the pool-side.
Victor and Svea are excellent hosts who are very happy to help with any arrangements for bookings.
The Wing is provided with most of the home from home comforts that you could wish for including a dishwasher, satellite TV and gas barbecue as well as two private areas for outdoor dining , sun bathing and just taking it easy.
Both years that we stayed at the wing we kayaked on the nearby argens river and we would recommend this as a fun and not too strenuous activity. -
