Description from the owner
Nestled into the tranquil landscape, La Porcherie is a high-quality gite offering holiday accommodation ideal for two people, but with capacity for four people, in the hamlet of Villemonteix, which is at the gateway to the Monts et Barrages, and the Millevaches Regional Park, in Limousin.
Renovated to a very high standard, the building (which used to house both a piggery and a bread oven) has kept all the character one would expect in a building of this nature (but the pigs have been evicted !). Wood beams and original stone walls are mixed with the comfort of modern conveniences to provide a comfortable retreat from the pressures of...Read more

La Porcherie Gite
Saint-Leonard-de-Noblat, Limousin, France
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
The Limousin, made up of three departments - Correze, Creuse and the Haute-Vienne - is a region of beauty and tranquillity. From pasture land and forests to magnificent lakes (many of which offer water sports and/or fishing) and rivers (again with fishing!) there is little that the region does not offer in the way of places to relax or to experience something a little more energetic!
The landscape lends itself naturally to many 'countryside' pastimes whether that be horse-riding, hiking, mushroom hunting (in season), 4 x 4 or motorbike off-roading, or mountain biking. Water sports abound in this region, which after all is rightly known as the lake district of France!
Only five minutes drive from the gite is the Lac de St Helene - typical of many such lakes in this area - where you will find a small well kept beach from which to swim in safety under the watchful gaze of a lifeguard (times of cover posted at the beach).
It is a perfect place for artists and art-lovers of all genres, with a rich history in not only the porcelain and enameling for which the region is famed, but also tapestries, weaving and stained glass making. The Limousin has played host to many famous painters from Claude Monet to Armand Guillaumin and lovers of painting or photography will find much to inspire them. Limoges was the birthplace of Auguste Renoir (1841) and the Musee de l'Eveche houses a permanent display of his paintings.
The Lac de Vassiviere is about 40 minutes drive from the gite and offers not only beaches, swimming, canoeing, and water skiing, but there is an island in the middle with a chateau with gardens housing a small menagerie of animals such as llamas and donkeys. There is also an exhibition centre which hosts art shows throughout the year. In an adjacent tower, we had the worlds largest Buddhist prayer wheel rotating constantly for about 6 months! Permanent sculptures adorn the gardens.
Also near to the lake is a great place to spend some adrenalin time! Even if you are scared of heights (as we both are!) Arbre en Arbre is a fantastic way to while away a few hours doing your best Tarzan impression! From easy 'green run' clambering over the obstacles, through the 'brown run' Tyrolean zip lines to the (as yet un-attemped by us) scary scary 'black run' there is something for everyone from the biggest scaredy cat to real adrenalin junkies!
History lovers will likewise find much of interest - the countryside is dotted with antiquities from dolmens to castles, manors, abbeys and churches (many of which date from the 11th century onwards). The local medieval town of St Leonard de Noblat is on the pilgrimage route to Compostella and the emblematic shell of St Jaques can be found set into the roads and pavements of its streets. 2010 was declared a Holy Year for the pilgrimage and completion of the route gains a Plenary Indulgence ( a remission of punishment for sins already committed!) - something that in a normal year is only granted if you die en route!
The Limousin is not blessed (or some would say cursed!) with many large towns, but the capital of the region is Limoges, some 35 minutes drive east from the gite. Here you will find a host of attractions - museums (porcelain, enamels, history of the resistance, and general), porcelain factories (where you can enjoy a tour before buying a piece of Limoges to take home!), a daily (mornings only) covered market, shopping, the cathedral and other churches, gardens, an aquarium, bowling, golf, restaurants... the list goes on!

Excellent hosts, very helpful; attentive but discreet.
A very well appointed sanctuary, perfect for two. Lovely countryside, super grounds and an abundance of soft fruit from the garden. Great fun feeding the chickens and enjoying their eggs. A very relaxing holiday. -

Having arrived at the Gite, Annie and Chris gave us a welcome tour and I have to say the photos of the property and surroundings are great but the real thing is just incredible.
They were fantastic hosts who superceeded our expectations on every level even providing us with perfect directions for our drive from Calais to the Gite and then greeting us with a welcome card, bottle of wine and chocolates upon our arrival.
The area caters to everyones needs, with beautiful rural surroundings and only a 25 minute drive to the centre of Limoges filled with shops to explore and cafe's serving the best croque monsier I have had in my life!
I cannot portray in words how fantastic this holiday experience is, I can only advise that you make the trip yourself - I assure you, you will not be disappointed!
Hopefully see you again Chris and annie and we shall have to have a Scrabble tournament!

Great stay, very comfortable, well equipped, and annie and Chris made us very welcome. Bottle of wine and fresh eggs waiting for us was a lovely touch and we appreciated the loan of the fishing gear too, even if we did only manage to catch 2 crayfish in the end! Perect place for a couple with a baby, many thanks!

If you want a self catering Gite in this area for one or two people, I can't see how you could do better than this one.
The terrific owners, Annie & Chris add tremendous value as well & made every effort to ensure that I had the most stress free holiday that I have enjoyed in visiting 23 countries whilst also, having taken the time & trouble to get to know me, making great suggestions on places to visit.
I totally recommend this holiday. -

Welcomed on arrival by annie and shown to our 'gite' where a bottle of wine, fresh eggs and chocolates were waiting for us.
Beautifully renovated and well appointed self contained facilities which includes a washing machine, microwave, cooktop & oven and refrigerator, however double bed a bit small as I am 195 cm. Chris and annie could not have done any more to make our stay any more enjoyable.
Car is really essential to get around and explore the area. We look forward to returning again. -

Situated approximately halfway between Limoges and Lac Vassivière, La Porcherie Gite is the ideal place from which to explore the rural and scenic delights of Haute Vienne and beyond. Convenient for access yet secluded from the road, there is a peaceful and almost contemplative feel about the place. One has only to gaze upon the vistas of green valleys and trees that everywhere abound to be relieved of the stresses of work and urban life. Apart from its swimming pool, bar-b-q, sunbeds and excellent self catering facilities, La Porcherie can offer you naturism in the summer (if that's your thing), log fires and roast chestnuts in the autumn and Tai Chi all the year round. To add to your cuisine, there is freshly baked bread and newly laid eggs, not to mention home grown, seasonal vegetables to be had on request. Chris and annie, your hosts, are helpful in the extreme and will go out of their way to ensure you have every comfort at your disposal, as well as the peace and freedom to enjoy your holiday as you wish. Deer and wild boar abound in the wooded hills around, whilst across the skies streak eagles and buzzards in their endless quest for prey and in the evenings shooting stars.

Chris and anne are very hospitality. The house is too small for a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers but they were so sweet to let the children stay in their big house.
The livingroom was small and more suitable for 2 persons but very nice decorated, so was the bedroom and the shower was fantastic. The garden nice and the swimmingpool great. We have had a great stay and we will return without children. It is a beautifull green environment and nearby there is a lake were you can swim. -

We enjoyed a restful and comfortable week away from it all at La Porcherie in Limousin. The cottage was clean and well equipped. Annie and Chris were excellent hosts - friendly and cheerful and nothing too much trouble.
For me the big bonus was Chris's excellent photographic tuition at a very affordable cost. -

It was not the first time we stayed at La Porcherie. We have been there 3 times now and we will keep on comming back.
Chris and annie make you feel very welcome and if you want to know anything or do an excusion in the neighbourhood, nothing is to much for them. The gite is very beautitull renovated by the owners and they managed to keep the ambiance of the old porcherie!
Everything you need for a good holiday is in and outside the gite. Even your own private swimmingpool!
So if you like nature, be active or just have a relaxed holiday, you can find it all in the direct surrounding of the gite.
And ...every morning there are fresh eggs available for breakfast, what remindes me that the boulangerie and the supermarché are not realy far away.

La Porcherie is a wonderfull place to stay. If you want to give your mind, spirit, soul and body some rest here you want to be. For people who have to much weight there is no big soft chair.
The location is a perfect place to start to discover the surroundings. -

Left on 05/16/2011 for a stay in September 2009
Great gite next door to the owner's home just outside a very attractive small town. The gite was beautifully set up for our arrival, with a welcome pack ready for us. We were made to feel really welcome by the owners throughout our visit, with gifts of eggs etc. There is plenty of parking, the site itself is very attractively landscaped, and whilst just near a convenient road, there was no noise at all & we could have been deep in the countryside. This part of the Limousin is very beautiful & there is easy access to Limoges itself.
