Description from the owner
L’Hirondelle is a large single story gite sleeping up to 6 people, which has been completely refurbished to an exceptionally high standard and awarded a prestigious 4*. It is in a peaceful tranquil location amidst vineyards. The 10m x 5m swimming pool is indoor, fully alarmed and has patio doors along one side which open on the hottest days but retain the warmth on cooler days. Additional Location Information
We are situated in the Gironde region of the "Purple Perigord" famous for it's vineyards and on the edge of the departments of the Charente, Dordogne and the Lot et Garonne. Further a field you will find, amidst the beautiful countryside and stunning scenery, many historical sites from Bastide, (walled) towns to fairy tale chateaux, prehistoric dwellings, caves and wonderful medieval stone towns and villages.
The old bastide town of Ste Foy La Grande (4 kms), situated on the edge of the Dordogne River is quite beautiful, with many half timbered medieval houses and a 13th Century Gothic Church. Ste Foy offers excellent shopping facilities, restaurants and supermarkets. It has a large Saturday market (one of the biggest in the area and said to be one of the top 50 in France), where one can find a wealth of local produce along with many other items. Traditional markets are also held in Bergerac, Eymet, Monsegur and Duras with atmospheric night time markets in the summer months.
Bergerac with its shops, boutiques & restaurants is just 25 minutes drive. The picturesque old town with its medieval architecture leads down to the river where boat trips are available in the summer. The Tobacco Museum is a interesting destination for visitors to the area.
The beautiful twelfth century village of St Emilion (recently added to UNESCO'c World Heritage list) is approximately a 30 minute drive away and is well worth a visit. Hidden beneath the town is Europes largest underground Church, hewn out of the soft rock by the Benedictine monks in the ninth century. The first weekend in May sees about 20 of the local wine chateaux open their doors to visitors and numerous concerts and wine tastings are held throughout the year. Of particular interest are the Fete of Printemps (June) and the Harvest (September).
The historic town of Castillon la Bataille (famous for the last major battle of the Hundred Years War) is approximately 30 minutes drive. Every summer for two weeks in July and August they hold an exciting floodlit festival re-enacting the battle which includes an intense two hour battle incorporating amazing stunts and pyrotechnics. It is well worth a late night!
Other activities in the immediate area include: fishing (licence costing approximately 30 Euros per week grants permission to fish anywhere on the Dordogne), several lakes offering beaches and leisure activities, aqua park suitable for children, bird-watching, walking, cycling, canoeing & kayaking, tennis, horse riding, go-karting, quad biking, paintball, hot air ballooning, gliding and parachuting.
Within walking distance there is a tennis court and basketball court which are free of charge.
The stunning beaches of the Atlantic coast are approximately 1½ hours by car. If you are adventurous enough to try fast water rides Aqualand suitable for all ages is near Arcachon.
The famous golfing haven of Golf des Vigiers is approximately 4 kilometres away as well as several other golf courses.
For those without the adventurous spirit Arcachon, famous for its oysters and other sea food is a short drive away. Whilst in the area a visit to the Dune de Pyla, the largest sand dune in Europe is highly recommended.
There are several golf courses nearby including the renowned Chateau des Vigiers Golf Club designed by David Steel and offering both 9 & 18 hole courses which is less than a 5 minute drive.
Fishing is available locally on the Dordoge River along with several local lakes.
Wine lovers are more than adequately catered for with the vineyards of Bordeaux, St.Emilion, Bergerac, Monbazillac all close at hand, offering opportunities for tours and tasting.
The average temperature from April - September is 18 deg. C with an average highest temperature for this period of 24.7 deg. C. On average the maximum temperature between June - August is just over 28 deg.C. The average number of hours of sunshine from May - August is 9 hours per day.
If you are looking for an out of season break the months of April, May, June and October are highly recommended with good temperatures and no crowds.
You can be assured of a warm welcome to a part of rural France steeped in
history with excellent and inexpensive restaurants, fine wine and gourmet
food.
