Amazing art collection. Good location. Really nice couple - very willing to make suggestions for restaurants, etc. Gae & Mel were helpful in so many respects. We felt like we were visiting friends.

Washington DC, District of ColumbiaDecent place to stay; but far away from city center & uncomforta
Left on 09/12/2011 for a stay in July 2011
The scoop: You are renting the first floor of a beautiful 3-story house. The floor where you are staying is connected to the rest of the house via "the stairway." The house is far away from downtown. I consider myself to be a brisk walker, but it took over 30 mins of walking despite Gae claiming it's 20-25 mins (per google, it's 2.3 miles, 45 mins walking). The area is not particularly well connected by bus or metro. Nearby, however, there is a whole foods and a nice coffee shop. Overall, decent place to stay, but uncomfortable bed.
Cons: The bed. As pullout beds without extra padding go, it's not bad; but then again, it's a pullout. Place could benefit from a real mattress. The place is also quite far from the downtown area and is not well connected by bus (see above).
Pros: Nice artwork, eccentric, but wonderful if you like modern, avant-garde art. Gae was nice for the little time we got to interact. Parking on the streets is free but with restrictions (you may have to move you car for street cleaning).Response from Gae Shulman - 10/01/2011

I am sorry this guest felt his expectations were not fully met, however our other reviews are excellent. This guest had only stayed in hotels prior to this and it may be for some young couples on their first visit to San Francisco that our location is not ideal. On the other hand, the ability to experience a neighborhood, especially one near to the Mission coupled with free, safe parking and excellent access highways leading to anywhere in the Bay Area (i.e. Napa, Stanford, Berkeley) are definite pluses for anyone visiting SF.
Our space is also listed on other websites and we would be glad to find additional reviews. We look forward to welcoming you.

Left on 08/10/2011 for a stay in July 2011
I enjoyed my 3 day stay in this very nice apartment , my only gripe was that I was too busy elsewhere to sit and relax in the garden and did not get enough time to actually relax there and enjoy the atmosphere. The art might not be to everyone's taste but it is certainly eclectic. The owners actually picked me up at my downtown location and ferried me to the apartment on he first day which was very nice of her. Clean comfortable and a nice neighborhood within a $10 taxi ride to the Moscone downtown area or a 25 minute stroll

Grenoble, FranceGreat place in SF!
Left on 03/28/2011 for a stay in March 2011
We spent two excellent weeks at Gae and Mel's in March and found it hard to leave!
A brainstorming of what we enjoyed: the gorgeous house, the quiet and safe neighbourhood, the spacious and cosy bedroom, the view from the house, the morrocan style shower, the garden which is as tastefully decorated as the whole place, their lovely dog, the nice conversations we had...
But more than that Gae and Mel are the kindest hosts we've ever met :)
Attentive yet not intrusive.
They provided us with valuable information about SF & its surroundings and advised us on restaurants, museums and outings.
Again we want to thank them for the wonderful weekend they offered us in Sonoma.
We enjoyed visiting the wineries and tasting some great wines with them.
Plus, Gae cooked us a delicious typical american meal as well as an excellent brunch in the morning.
Lucky us!
We would definitely stay again at the Shulmans. -

NYCQuirky art Filled Space in Portrero Hill
Left on 12/19/2010 for a stay in December 2010
My boyfriend and I stayed in Gae's guest room for two nights. She is a gracious hostess and was the perfect combination of being forthcoming and inviting, while granting us our space. The area you rent is the bottom level of her town home, which she shares with her husband and dog, Puzzle, who is well-behaved and stays upstairs. The entrance is shared, but we never ran into them. There is an office area, which doubles as a kitchenette with a mini fridge and hot plate, but I only made tea once. There is a private bathroom with a shower that has good water pressure.
The pros: You awake in an art filled room. Gae is the kooky jewish auntie you never had. Easy parking. The price is right, especially for S.F. I liked Portrero Hill, but we did have a car. Whole Foods is right there, convenient for wine/water/snack runs. Wifi. access to a lovely patio with view.
The cons: You feel like you're staying with relatives- not a true sense of privacy. The bed is a pull out couch, not a real bed. We never cooked because it really is not comfortable for that. We did not spend much time in Portrero Hill- more interested in the restaurants and street life of Hayes Valley, Lower Haight, Panhandle, the Mission etc..
I gave it 4 stars because I am an art lover and I prefer an interesting space over a generic one that might be more comfortable. Gae is a very dynamic and an all around interesting character- worth meeting. She invited us upstairs to view her other art and sip a glass of white wine from Mendoza, Argentina. She has a lot of life stories and is a social gazelle. I would recommend her place if you are staying a couple of nights in S.F ( that is her minimum) and will be out most of the time and don't mind a pull out couch sleeping situation.Response from Gae Shulman - 12/22/2010

This is the only review that mentions an uncomfortable bed, and it was never mentioned by the guest. We have had people stay for over three months and they have been able to use the kitchen facilities and eat quite well
We also extend our larger kitchen and laundry facilities to guests.
Please read the other comments for a truer picture of what you can expect. We can also put you in touch with guests if any questions exist.

This is the comment sent to us directly in an email by this guest, which includes a request to stay in our Sonoma home which maybe of interest to potential guests.
." Sean slept alright, but I am more sensitive (hence my question: is it comfortable?) and I had trouble. We loved the place in every respect otherwise. Sean & I would be delighted to visit Sonoma and stay at another Shulman home. "

London, UKAmazing stay, no complaints
Left on 09/01/2010 for a stay in July 2010
We arrived with minimal fuss to check in - great. We were shown around the fabulously quirky art filled apartment and our eyes were out on stocks. The apartment is situated in the Potrero Hill district which may not necessarily be on the tourist trail but that suited us fine. It is only a short walk (30 minutes) to the centre of town. The area has several restaurants, a great local bar called Blooms, coffee shop, book shop and curiosity shop of sorts. There's a supermarket nearby and a culinary school which you can dine at. Gae can tell you about this as she offered to call the chef for us to book us in. It's also near the Mission district which has plenty of bars and restaurants.
Gae and Melvin were very friendly and helpful. They asked if we'd like to spend a night in their wine country home and let us have the run of their living/cooking areas when they were in the country, not that our room and food area weren't sufficient as we were mostly padding the streets of SF.
We also had direct access to their garden from our living area where there is a view of the Bay Bridge.
All in we had no complaints and would gladly go back and recommend to our friends. Much better than staying in a hotel! -

san francisco, CAArt lovers delight!

This was a great find in SF... not only more affordable than a hotel, but with way more charisma and comfort, too! If you like modern art, you'll love looking through the house's collection - you even get a set of amazing prints to glance through right in the bedroom you stay in!
Gae and Mel are gracious hosts - available for answering questions and an occasional glass of wine or coffee, but never intruding on your space and privacy.
I totally recommend staying here if you are in San Francisco for more than a day or two. -

We enjoyed our stay at Gae's house.
For the art lover it is unforgettable experience.
Gae was very welcoming and helpful. The kitchen was basic but manageable.
My only worry was getting out of bed during the night not to get entangle in
a net installation hanging next to my side of bed.
The location is very good, quiet, a good Whole Food store nearby with a cafe.
Bus stops and easy parking.

Melbourne AustraliaWhy Stay At A Hotel When You Can Stay In Places Like This
Left on 11/13/2009 for a stay in November 2009
found this apartment via Flipkey. Just liked the eclectic arty look. And that is exactly what the Shulman's apartment turned out to be-and more. If you are wanting a room with a view, 5 star accomodation, porters,a restuarant and CBD then this is NOT the place for you.
If on the other hand you are wanting a wonderful ecletic artfilled apartment, big bedroom, study area, access to garden,in a home atmosphere with in (long ) walking distance of CBD,great value, with amazingly worldly and firendly hosts then this is the place for you.
I cannot speak highly enough of this apartment and the Shulmans.
I would not stay anywhere else in San Francisco if I am on my own. -

What a treat to stay in a place where every object is so passionately considered, from the art on the walls to the little details like the bathroom towel rack.
We were initially hesitant to rent a space with a "sofa bed" but we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was more comfortable than our bed at home!
One of our favorite things was spending our mornings in the lovely back garden having coffee (which was delicious)...and what an incredible view of the city!
Though we didn't have the pleasure of meeting Gae in person, she was very helpful over the phone and made arrangements above and beyond the call of duty when our flight was delayed. Thanks again Gae!Response from Gae Shulman - 11/12/2009

I spent a week in this apartment and the hosts were most gracious and non-intrusive. The apartment is on the lower floor of the house and is quite large with great bathroom facilities. The art work is abundant, varied and intriguing - excellent bonus to the quality of your stay. There is an outside deck that provides a beautiful view of SF. Street parking is very easy to find in the neighborhood but a car is not necessary as there are convenient bus lines in the neighborhood. Outstanding small dog in the house - incredibly friendly with a great personality. They will be my first choice when looking for a place for my next SF visit !
