What Past Guests Are Saying
Berkeley Heights, NJ
Great Neighborhood, Great Bargain
We totally enjoyed our stay at Captain's Quarters. Small but cosy, nice area. Cortland ave. is great, with a nice grocery, butcher shop and restaurants. Bernal Heights Hill is a must. Such views! Close to Mission, easy walk to restaurants.
The single tenant upstairs was very quiet, but if someone less considerate was occupying the Crow's Nest, it might have been an issue. We could hear every footstep, especially on the stairs which are right over the smallish bed.
Everything was tidy when we checked in with the door codes supplied. Slightly worn kitchen, but everything worked. There is a great toaster that also poaches eggs! If you intend to cook, the supplies are meager. No sugar, no coffee filters, no spices to speak of. Almost empty salt box.
The murphy bed was very comfortable, but not for the disabled. It took two of us to open it. There are also steps in front and a narrow entry.
Nice hot shower in a tiny but adequate bathroom. Again, not for the disabled, a step up to enter and a stall shower.
We intended to clean up thoroughly before we left, but the vacuum was literally held together with string and really didn't function. Oops.
This is a bargain, and no luxury accommodation, but great if you want something off the beaten track. Live like a native...
Our biggest problem was parking. We had a car since we were visiting family in Oakland, and had to circle many blocks many times to find a space day or night. Very hilly, very difficult to find a spot with all the home garages and no-parking zones. Some long walks were needed.
This place is perfect for an active couple, maybe one kid. We liked it a lot and would stay again, maybe the Crow's Nest next time.
not so great
check-in, check-out & booking was great. the place was super cute, cozy & great location but it was not clean upon my arrival. dishes had food particles stuck to them & i found a used toothpick on the couch. also there were cutouts in the ceiling that were leaking lint & dirt consistently. as well the toilet needed plunging every day.
Response from SF Holiday Rentals - 05/11/2013
Jodi's arrival coincided with a move-out on the same day, so the unit was not available before 3pm and the housekeeper may have been behind that day. Because it was a turn-around, a deep cleaning couldn't be done and I'm disappointed that she found a toothpick; normally the housekeepers are very thorough. For the same reason, the plates weren't properly looked over. Unfortunately, the owner had a personal crisis during her stay and was not able to respond in a timely manner to the trap door complaint which has since been addressed (ceiling panel that opens to access the shower/tub in the unit above). The toilet has been fixed numerous times and was fixed twice during Jodi's stay, but the parts are made so cheaply now, that they don't always work properly (made in China). We were surprised that she had given such a low review as most people find it's a great value in this very expensive city and we extended a deep discount to her.
San Francisco Charm on a Budget
Close to everything you need on vacation. Food, groceries, transportation. This is the third trip to the Captains Quarters for our family. The managers continue to improve and repair the decor. Our young nieces were enchanted by the Murphy Bed folding out of the wall.
Our only complaint was that the door lock system is confusing. We ended up locked out on a Saturday and did not hear back from the "emergency" number until Monday. Luckily the long term guest upstairs was able get the door open Saturday afternoon. The managers assured me that was a glitch that will not be repeated.
Great place for kids, not too much breakable decor. A TV guide with kids channels specifically would be nice.
Cozy, nice location.
Thank you annette, for your assistance during our stay.
The condo was clean and comfortable, everything we needed was already at the unit. Shopping and services are within walking distance. Cozy unit, enjoyed our stay.
cozy in Bernal Heights
We enjoyed our week here, the Captain's Quarters is a very cozy and convenient rental.
3 Porter St.
My wife and I were looking for a small space near our daughter, who lives in
Bernal Heights. This spot was very nice. The murphy bed is comfortable and
the kitchen is small, but well appointed. We were able to park close by every
night and the neighborhood was quiet. The miniscule bathroom is fine unless
2 people are in a hurry and need to share the space.
Overall, we recommend this rental and will be back.

ellsworth house is a gem
The place is immaculate and had recently been remodeled. It's home away from home. Mary and Michael are just the nicest people. It's a few minutes from a wonderful coffee shop and some nice restaurants.
Lovely place, PERFECT location
Everything was neat and clean. The owner/manager went out of her way to
check in and see if we needed anything periodically. Price was very
reasonable. And there's no way to beat being within walking distance from
Cortland St and all the shops. I didn't have any problem getting to the market
or meeting friends coffee/drinks even though I was recovering from surgery
and couldn't walk far. Also near the best farmers market in the US.
There was easy parking for our rental car, too. SO MUCH BETTER than staying
at some hotel and having to eat out every meal, etc. The place was cute and
