Charming one bedroom, one bathroom furnished ground floor apartment in historic Old San Juan, located in the residence of the late Master Puerto Rican painter Alfonso Arana.
This beautiful building of restored Spanish Colonial architecture is characterized by thick walls and brick-stone floors; all doors of the apartment open to a private, lush, interior garden. With ceiling fans throughout (no air-conditioned), this lovely apartment has an airy, tropical feel.
This is an “L” shaped, open floor plan apartment with a fully functioning kitchen. The bedroom has a queen size bed, and is separated by an archway from the living roo...Read more

We spent 2 nights in Casa arana, very old colonial house in Old San Juan, once owned by a famous painter a.Arana. Some of his paintings are still displayed in the house. Our favorite one is hanging in the bedroom. The apartment is great, roomy, clean and quiet, you can hear people talking on the street or dogs barking, but this gives you the feeling that you are a part of community. The kitchen is well equipped. The living area has several doors that open to a patio full of tropical plants, like in old Spanish houses. This was our favorite place for breakfast, checking e-mails (well functioning wireless internet access) and for a drink after dinner. We slept in a queen bed with a mosquito net. There was no aC,but we did not feel that was needed, since the tick walls provided enough insulation from the sun,and the temperature at night was comfortable.
Everything we wanted to see in Old San Juan was in a walking distance!
The owners Olivia and Luis were very helpful, gracious hosts. Thank you to both for a wonderful time. -

Gainesville, FloridaSuch a romantic place

This place was beautiful and exactly what we were looking for. Luis was a wonderful host and his house is one of the most beautiful homes I have ever visited. He lives upstairs and is always available to help if you need something, but otherwise you would not know he is there. The rental (ground floor) has its own entrance and the patio is just for the enjoyment of those who are staying there. There is no air conditioning, or TV which could be discouraging for some people, but for us it was perfect, as there was no "electrical noise" literally and metaphorically. By the way, the house has plenty of fans and the walls are very thick, so we were never hot. The supermarket is a couple of blocks away, so we got groceries and cooked breakfast every day and ate out on the patio. The only bad thing was the mosquitoes, but this is a problem everywhere in San Juan. The home is close to everything, which makes it fun to walk and explore the city, knowing you can return to the house and rest any time you want. Staying in this house we felt like we were living in San Juan. Old San Juan is one of the safest neighborhoods in Puerto Rico. If you are craving some alone time with yourself or looking for a romantic getaway this is the perfect place. It is also a great place for those who want to know the country’s history, culture, and people. We had a blast.

BermudaGreat Getaway

On our 4th trip to San Juan we decided to get away from the Hotels and try a vacation rental in the beautiful Old San Juan. The location of this apartment was in walking distance for all sites in Old San Juan. We also rented a car for a portion of our trip and since parking is free on the streets we did not have to pay crazy hotel parking prices.
Overall the apartment was beautiful and very relaxing. Wish we would have stayed in more but we were up and out by 8:00 am every day, so we did not use much of the facilities.
Not having a air conditioner was not an issue for us as we live on a Island and are used to the heat. I did however have a ongoing war with the Mosquito's (but that was every where is San Juan)and used up plenty of off!
Can't wait to go back, and will definitely stay at Casa arana! -

Bellingham, WAPerfect location - Quiet Getaway
Left on 11/05/2012 for a stay in October 2012
We stayed 3 nights at Casa arana. Luis was a fabulous host and was there to greet us even though we were very late in our arrival. The apartment is very quiet and we loved having our coffee each morning out in the central garden. The weather was unseasonably warm/humid during our stay, so the lack of aC did make sleeping a challenge. The location is perfect though for exploring Old San Juan and it's also close to a grocery and Walgreens, as well as some wonderful restaurants.

We stayed in the apartment the week of Oct 13 and explored not only Old San Juan but also the whole island from there! Apartment is very spacious and we loved having our coffee at the patio table in the morning. The garden lizards provided us our morning entertainment. Olivia and Luis made the process easy and gave us lots of tips. Upside - location and spacious. Downside - no air conditioning (it was tougher than we expected) and periodic water stops.

Washington, DCThe Essence of Old San Juan
Left on 08/31/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay @ the Casa arana...the location was fantastic...one block to Plaza de las armas with its restaurants, drug stores, an excellent grocery store and not more than a couple of blocks to the entrance to the Morro Castle. Several blocks in different directons brings you to all the coffee shops, restaurants, tourist stores, museums, and art galleries and local color you could want in Old San Juan. Being in a spacious apartment with kitchen and living room and patio allows you to entertain if you want and more importantly hang out in comfort and style while you recharge your batteries. There is no aC but the walls are thick, there are numerous roof and floor fans and the interior is totally shaded so that it remains cool...living in the open with the arched doorways open to the patio garden really gives you the flavor of what is was like to live here four hundred years ago and beats a small cramped hotel room any day! Having a kitchen is a great convenience as you can save money by preparing some of your own food not to mention all the time saved from having to go out every time you want a cup of tea or a sandwich. Would love to stay for a month if I could!

Left on 03/14/2012 for a stay in February 2012
The location was fantastic for this small rental - very close to Plaza de armas in Old San Juan. We could walk to dinner every night and jump on the free trolley in just minutes. The reservation process was easy (Paypal) and the landlord was great - very informative and accommodating. There were plenty of fans and we were very comfortable with the temperature.
Some of the cons:
- There are no closets and so you won't be able to hang clothes.
- The mattress is old and needs to be replaced.
- They need new mosquito nets
- Wish it had been a bit cleaner - we went out and bought some cleaning aids because the fruit flies were terrible.
- There were limited paper products
- The water pressure was weak - just an FYI
- The main door is very tricky and we locked ourselves out once
- The nearest beach is a 2 miles walk; the better beach (Condado) is a 3 mile walk. Be aware of this if you are looking to mix up some sightseeing with beach - going. -

This colonial style, first floor apartment was a gorgeous little love nest for our humble honeymoon. It was a great, much more affordable option compared to a hotel. The living/courtyard are very connected and it has a very romantic feeling with all the whitewashed old architecture. Lovely landlord who lives in the apartments above. Art is everywhere, it is really beautiful. It is also perfectly located in the old city, which I highly recommend compared to staying in a resort--it's an incredibly beautiful city! Old San Juan is full of history, amazing food and is easy to access other parts of the city.
There are some cons to the place: there is no air conditioning (although plenty of fans--this was fine for us in January but not for everyone) and the mattress was not the most comfortable.
