Chesapeake, VirginiaCasa Francesca; the view; the place; the people; phenominal!
Left on 06/26/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Let me start this review to all those people concerned about safety, crime, etc. in Nicaragua. My Wife did not bring any jewelry with her because of what we read. Howeveer, she bought with her one very nice ring. On about day 3 we dropped some laundry off in the morning at the guard shack. When we returned in the pitch dark, we entered the gate and the guard came runnig after our car. In broken english he said our laundry was done and up in our house. He then handed me my wife's ring which someone found in the washing machine when they were doing our laundry! Would that ring have been returned had this been an american or european hotel???
The house is beautiful! The view priceless; mountains; beach; sunset. It has 2 master bedrooms; 2 full baths and a seperate house off the pool with an office/bedroom/half bath. Nicely detailed with all the basic amenities.
Many pluses and only a couple of minues;
Pluses
House - beautiful and safe; we never locked the sliding door (key would not work so we could not); we had 2 laptops/extra money; etc. They had guards stationed at the gate and near our house; we always felt safe. The people are honest to a fault.
Pool - tiled infinity pool; cleaned every day.
location - a plus for us; maybe a minus for others. It is about 8 miles from downtown Sjds. Close enough to everything but tucked away near a great beach and in the mountains.
Concierge service provided by Gaby/Remax in Sjds - absolutely Phenominal lady! Set us up for Suf lessons, guided tours; restaurant reviews; helped us with our car rental (Hertz stinks!; did not have a 4 wheel drive car for us at the airport). I literally cannnot say enough about the service she provided us. In addition, she is one of the nicest people we have ever met.
Minuses
Wifi at the house down all week due to a bad storm the day we arrived.
Main screen door off kitchen lock was not working all week.
You had to supply the basics; Paper towels; toilet tissue, etc.
No a/C but the nights were cool enough to sleep well.
Great place; great area. Rent this place! -

Winchester, EnglandReal luxury in the midst of a stunning natural setting
Left on 09/19/2011 for a stay in September 2011
The short journey from San Juan to Casa Francesca at Balcones was a pleasurable experience in it's own right. Driving along a dirt road through increasingly lush tropical forest; passing the odd group of local people and dwellings set back amongst the trees. Then arriving at the entrance to Balcones framed by amazing Chilamate trees with multiple limbs reaching from branches to the earth, looking like groups of old men with walking sticks. Once a resort worker had let you through the gates, it was over a small stream and then a drive along a steep track snaking round the side of the hill. Despite the build up nothing prepares for the sheer breath taking beauty of the scence that awaits as you descend the steps to the pool area of Casa Francesca. Perched on the side of a row of hills, that fall away in front to the Pacific ocean and march in splendour to left and right, all covered with vibrant tropical forest. A large horizon swimming pool sits in front of this scene, in which I spent many hours lazing about watching the ocean and the howler monkeys dangling nonchalantly from the surrounding trees. The house behind is a mixture of white washed walls and natural wood with the main living area having a series of screen doors that can be opened to make you feel as though the house is a natural extension of the surrounding landscape. This lovely design is backed up by all the luxuries of the modern world, from heated showers, to coffee grinders, to stereo's, to fridges/freezers to keep your beer cool. I understand that the owner has chosen deliberately not to have a TV on site, I personally approve of this and would have found it a distraction from the idyllic and truly relaxing setting. My only regret about my stay was that it was only for 4 days, really not long enough.

We had a family get together at Casa Francesca and enjoyed a very nice time both indoors and outdoors. The house is new, well designed, the pool is fanastic and the view of the jungle is really magnificent.

Just before handing over the key, our local contact - Gabby - gave us a few words of advice: don't be startled if you see monkeys while you're in the pool, they like to watch humans swim; always check your shoes for scorpions; and if you see a guy walking around late at night, it's most likely one of the security guards on 24-hour duty. Hmmm. For a moment, she made us wonder what we'd gotten ourselves in to. But such is life in Central america. It's that exotic edge that makes Nicaragua so appealing.
We stayed at Casa Francesca for 3 nights by accident. We were supposed to be housed in another "casa” within Balcones de Majagual. A week before our arrival, though, we were told that repair work was affecting the hot water supply, so we got an unexpected upgrade. Bonus!
My partner and I both agree that the best feature is the pool. It's long enough to allow for length swimming. The infinity edge spills over into an unrivalled view. The landscape is ruggedly pristine. No other buildings scar the setting. There are houses on either side, but they're unobtrusive. At night, once the sun sets, the blue-black sky comes alive with a million points of light. Little compares to slipping naked into the cool waters, and enjoying the exhilaration of being free to appreciate the sights, sounds and sensations of nature's night.
The house itself is long, with a bathroom in every bedroom. It is comfortable and clean and every effort is made to ensure you have everything you need. This is thanks to a dedicated team - including the owners' representatives in Canada, and local security guards, our guide/concierge and neighbours. Everyone is friendly and eager to create a positive vacation experience.
The only drawbacks are the lack of a TV and screens (no glass) on the sliding doors.
In all, we'd definitely recommend booking a stay here. It is outside the hustle of Sjds, but within commuting distance if you crave a night out. Enjoy!
