San Juan, Puerto Rico
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
It's a quiet residential area on a tree-lined street between Condado and Isla Verde which are the best tourist spots in PR. There are guest houses in the neighborhood, but no hotels. You can walk to a supermarket, a pharmacy, a liquor store, restaurants (Che's, Blue, Tio Daniel, Seven Seas,Levi's, Marisqueria Atlantica, Pollo Tropical, Subway, Sapporo, Pepin's, Banana's Cafe, Hosteria del Mar, B de Burro) and to a very popular bakery shop: Kasalta. The beach is about two minutes away and there's a private swimming pool at your doorstep. We have parking and I recommend renting a car to save money on cabs and sightseeing tours. Except in Old San Juan, most businesses have parking. In Old San Juan there are parking lots: Dona Fela (the cheapest one), Senor Frogs, and Ballaja. There is also a free trolley ride. If you don't want to rent a car and are in no hurry, the bus stop is about two blocks away. There are also 24-hour-cabs. The casita has a convenient location because it's near hotels and major highways.

Kathleen's guest house is absolutely beautiful and was perfect for me and my boyfriend! Kathleen was very helpful and even drove us to the nearest grocery store and showed us around right after we put our stuff in the guest house. The house is located close enough to catch the bus to Old San Juan, walk to some really good restaurants, or to just go to the beach! Honestly our best days were when we were just chilling at the beach! Thank you Kathleen for most affordable and yet beautiful guest home that you allowed us to stay in!!

Kathleen's guest house is perfect to stay in Puerto Rico if you are a couple. It is the perfect size and in a great location. A 3 minute walk from the beach. She has 2 very cute dogs. It was really easy and simple to organize. I would definitely recommend this to anyone else!

Left on 07/29/2012 for a stay in July 2012
The most important feature of this rental, is the warm and generous spirit of its owner. She made me feel at home right away. This in my book is the most important. Having access to the beach, one block from the apartment was great. I enjoyed using the pool whenever I wanted.
The facility is nice with the basics. Bed was comfortable, bathroom and kitchen had the essentials to function. There was a leak in the bedroom somewhere (which I was warned about)so there was water on the floor at all times.
I found the lack of aC in the living room a real minus as was not having the couch available to sleep in.
The facility in general would benefit from some good cleaning and upgrading. One of the counters had a broken door; all the shelves with dishes, cups and cooking materials were in total disarray.Response from Kathleen E. Shaw - 03/31/2013
Owner
The leak was fixed as well as the kitchen cabinet. We now have a new cabinet with a beautiful back splash. There is also a new HD television. As for not having AC in the living room, the ad says that there are fans in that area. It also mentions that the unit is suitable for two people. Mrs. Gimeno was told that it was just for two, but she insisted on sleeping on the couch to spend time with her relatives that were staying in the air-conditioned bedroom. I even gave her a much lower rate upon her insistence. I also gave her a car tour around Old San Juan with some of my friends. I am sorry that she was not satisfied with the apartment, but I hope the future guests will be.

It was a great stay at Kathleen's cozy shack. We were there the first week of June and we had the best time. The pool was accessible at all times and the location of the house was amazing. The supermarket was near, the bus stop, and who could forget having the beach right across the street! I definitely recommend Kathleen's home if you want to have a great time in Puerto Rico! She was a wonderful host and her dogs were too adorable!

Left on 04/27/2012 for a stay in April 2012
The service was exactly what we hoped for- very friendly, but also unobtrusive. This allowed us to feel very comfortable and at ease during our stay while also knowing that should any questions or concerns arise we'd receive friendly accommodation.
The rental property featured everything we needed for our week-long stay. A clean and extremely comfortable bed was a fantastic thing to return to after busy days and nights of taking in so much Puerto Rican excitement! Plenty of hot water in a clean and tidy bathroom. A fully-equipped kitchen (especially refrigerator) was great if we wanted a bite first thing in the morning, or so we could pack a lunch to bring to the beach. And the property provided plenty of space for us to "spread out" and feel at home.
The home and adjacent rental apartment are located on a quite residential street and it takes 3 minutes between walking out the door and spreading our towel out on the sand. The immediate beach is beautiful and a bit quieter than many stretches of Ocean Park/Condado beaches.
This is a perfect location for those looking to relax and soak in the sun and culture that the island offers. Be aware, however, that you'll want a rental car or taxi service to reach the main attractions of Condado, Old San Juan, Isla Verde, etc. Overall an excellent value considering location and living space. -

Kathleen's casita was exactly what we were looking for and exactly what was advertised. The bedroom was comfortable, the accommodations were adequate and private, the location could not be beat. We were hoping to have a place that was near the water, apart from other tourists, and relatively inexpensive. That's exactly what we got... And more! The hosts were incredible, respectful, and always willing to offer some advice on places to dine / visit. Highly recommended!

This is our first trip to San Juan and have had a great time. The apartment was clean, fully equipped with all essentials and a couple blocks from a clean and quiet beach. The reviews was the reason I chose Kathleens home which lived up to my expectations. The owners are so kind and even drove us to pick up our rental car and took us on a tour of the area. We absolutely love Betty or Bettina... We have 3 dogs two of which are boxers so we felt right at home and definitely helped as we missed our dogs. We will stay here again next trip to Puerto Rico!!!

not fun during skypes.

Kathleen's place is our "home away from home" in Puerto Rico. We stayed here last year and couldn't wait to come back. Kathleen and Francesco are wonderful people who go out of their way to make your holiday special. They picked us up at the airport late in the evening and Kathleen told us there were two sandwiches and a couple of our favorite drinks in the fridge. The next morning Francesco took us to the grocery store. We just love how thoughtful they both are.
Their "casa" is private, clean, comfortable and convenient to everything. We spent lots of time in the pool, it has a neat waterfall effect, and a beautiful mango tree nearby. The ocean is a block away, beach chairs, towels etc. all you need is provided during your stay. Absolutely Perfect! Thank you both for a great time, we look forward to seeing you soon. -

We stayed in Kathleen's lovely casita for 9 nights. This was our 4th trip to the area, and this definitely was our best trip. The casita was clean and comfortable and was a great value. The casita is really close to the beach and is located in a very safe, quiet neighborhood. It is also centrally located for outings to Old San Juan, Condado & Isla Verde. I particularly loved the very comfortable bed. It was so convenient to have a full kitchen. The beach chairs and umbrella were great. We rented a car (to travel around the island), and parking (no cost) was always available near the casita. It was fun having our own pool to swim in. The owner, Kathleen, was such a wonderful host and went out of her way to make us feel right at home. Kathleen's dog, Betina, is so adorable. We look forward to our next stay in this rental.

Left on 12/19/2011 for a stay in December 2011
We stayed here for 5 days/4 nights in early December and really enjoyed our time at this rental. Coming from a cramped apartment in NYC, we found the room more than enough for our needs. Both rooms, the living room/kitchen area and the bedroom were clean when we arrived. The owner even provided us with beach towel and basic toiletries, which was nice because we only brought carry-on bags. She also provided us with two beach chairs and a beach umbrella, which we used almost everyday of our trip.
We found the rental location to be very convenient going both east to the bioluminescent bay and west to San Juan. In addition, we made the most of the rental's proximity to the beach--about a two minute walk--because we took a morning jog on the beach before we started our day. The pool was also a nice alternative to the beach.
All in all, we were very happy with our stay and we got along great with our hosts. We highly recommend this rental to anyone considering a trip to Puerto Rico. -

We just got home from a wonderful trip to PR and have nothing but great things to say about Kathleen and her husband. She is such a gem and wonderful person to work with. The apartment is very clean, private and perfect for two-three people. The location couldn't be better, just two blocks from beautiful Ocean Beach. Kathleen was very helpful with suggesting local restaurants, bakeries, and areas to have a fun time. If you are looking to stay in the Condado, Isla Verde, Ocean Park area this is the place to stay!! A perfect substitute to staying in an overpriced, tourist filled hotel. This is staying in Puerto Rico, Boricua Style!!! Looking forward to seeing you again in the future Kathleen!

Our first stay in San Juan turned out to be an awesome time! I am so happy I found Kathleen's Guest House on Tripadvisor. From the hospitality of Kathleen, her adorable guest house (with a super comfy bed and pillows) and perfect location...literally one minute from the ocean and convenient to other great areas in San Juan. We fell in love with their dog too...she was such a sweetheart and we were missing our own animals so she was great company:) Their pool is great for taking a "quick dip" or getting some sun away from the ocean. We will definately be back to stay at Kathleen's Guest House in the future. We have nothing but great things to say about our stay at Kathleens...it seemed as if we had known her for a long time after first meeting her...she made us feel right at home in her place.

Let me just say that prior to us even getting there, I had sent an email to ask if anything was wrong with the rental since there had been a lots of storms passing through the area. I put what date I would be coming into town(not when I was going to stay here). She didn't answer my question and immediately asked for more money if I was going to stay for another length of time. I explained it was only the date I was getting into town not when I was going to stay there. Ok fine, whatever. We get there and the place is nice enough. But it was way too hot to even stay in the kitchen area because the only air is in the bedroom. We had no phone reception and the internet connection was intermittent. We were reserved to staying in the bedroom when we were there. There was an ant problem in the bathroom, nothing could be left out. Ants got all over my hairbrush!!! Ughh!! The bed was comfortable enough. We then had to leave due to a family emergency back home. We only stayed one night(had originally reserved 4 nights). We had left around noon the next day to head back home. Originally she said she was only going to charge us $80 for the cancellation. So you figure one night @$80 plus $80 cancellation. But after she discussed it with her husband she said we could only get $80 back. So we basically paid for 3 nights and only stayed one. You would think they would be more understanding of our situation. After complaining to her about bad business she agreed to send at least another $40 by money order thru the mail the following week. I have yet to receive anything. I have emailed her and no response. So I feel compelled to write this review. All we did in this place was take a shower and slept in the bed. Very minimal cleaning. I was very disappointed with the whole transaction. Also what should be noted there are like 3 gates to this place, one even inside the house, kind of scary if you ask me. I was kind of glad we didn't have to stay here.

The ad says there is air conditioning in the bedroom and there are fans in the kitchen area. You are the first to complain about no phone reception and intermittent internet connection. The apartment is super clean with no ant problem. I understand that you are upset because you didn't get all your money back, but there's a cancellation fee. The apartment was reserved for you and even if you just stayed for a day and a half everything had to be cleaned again, including washing the sheets, comforter and towels. You must have received a money order by now. I have emailed you but haven't received any answer either. Yes, it should be noted that there are gates. There are gates all over PR and I want my renters to feel as safe as possible. I'm sorry that it was scary for you.

Left on 07/21/2011 for a stay in July 2011
My girlfriend and I stayed at Kathleen's place in Ocean Park for a week. The place was great in a great location -- just a block from the beach and had a full kitchen, useful for cooking breakfast in the morning.
Kathleen went above and beyond in terms of service. She picked us up and dropped us off at the airport free-of-charge and when my girlfriend got sick, she took us to a local pharmacy and spoke to the pharmacist in Spanish to get her some much needed cold medication.
An added bonus to the location is the fact that there's a pool included with your stay, so if you want to take a break from the beach and just lay on a raft and chill at the pool, there's always that option.
The bus stop nearby can be pretty flaky in terms of times and frequency, but you can always rent a car or take a cab for less than the price it would cost to rent a car for the week. -

I really can't say enough great things about my stay in the casita behind Kathleen's home in Ocean Park. I went to San Juan on business and pleasure, and found that the casita gave me exactly what I wanted: my own space within a beautiful residential neighborhood, away from the touristy hotel zones. The location is perfect--just blocks from the beach and Barbosa Park, and a nice 10 minute walk to Panaderia Kasalta, where I had breakfast most mornings. The casita was great for one person, but would be equally comfortable for two. The pool was so refreshing after a long day at the beach. The most unique aspect of my stay, however, was the hospitality of my host, Kathleen. I hadn't rented a car since I wanted to take public transportation as much as possible, but after realizing public transport didn't run as efficiently as I had hoped, Kathleen was kind enough to drive me to wherever I needed to go. Kathleen and her family are lovely. I will definitely stay here next time I'm in San Juan.

I've traveled to San Juan about a dozen times, and this was by far my favorite "lodging experience". Nestled on a quiet street just behind the fabulous "Ocean Park" beach (a great locals spot), we loved staying with Kathleen and her family. The space was spacious and clean, and there was tons of outdoor space to stretch out and read a book under an umbrella or stick your toes in the pool. There is a great Spanish bakery/restaurant (Kasalta) and Mexican spot (El B de Burro) within 10 minutes walking. This was a great find for low-key relaxed trip, and we definately will return.

We enjoyed staying in this apartment in a nice residential area very close to the beach, away from the traffic and congestion. The beach is beautiful, and the city bus to Old San Juan has a stop right at the beach. Kathleen was an excellent hostess. She picked us up at the airport, gave us information about good restaurants and even gave us a ride to the grocery store the first night. She gave us lots of information about things to do in San Juan and the surrounding area. We stayed 4 nights, before departing on a cruise. It was very comfortable, relaxing stay and nice to be out of the tourist areas.

We could have asked for nothing more in regard to our stay here. The rental is a freestanding casita on the back of Kathleen's fenced in property accessed via a beautifully lit entryway, lined with outdoor seating (perfect for warm, morning breakfasts).
The unit is very clean and extremely comfortable... fully stocked kitchen, a more-than-sufficient bathroom with large shower, and very comfortable queen-sized mattress. Kathleen is always updating the property, including installing a new (and very efficient) air conditioner in the bedroom the night before our arrival.
Location-wise, we found the property ideal. With a rental car and less than 5 minute drive, we were able to access an american-style grocery store, tons of local restaurants, the major highway to visit the rest of the island, and the prime tourist strips in both Condado and Carolina. And of course, the location one short block from the beach made the walk easy.
Lastly, and not to be neglected, was Kathleen's hospitality. She welcomed us into the property when we arrived at 7am on a Saturday morning. She brought us freshly prepared Puerto Rican pastries one afternoon when she knew we were home. She provided helpful recommendations on where to eat and what to see. And she even left her adorable dog Betina to keep us company for our morning outdoor breakfasts.
All in all, a perfect stay, and very much hope to return to stay again!Response from Kathleen E. Shaw - 03/09/2011

With this being our first time using trip advisor for a vacation rental we were not sure what to expect, but we were presently surprise. We felt that we were in our own apartment safe within a gated community closely nestled between the airport and San Juan and steps from the beach. We rented a car; therefore, parking was available and a few short steps outside the small two room rental. While there we felt as though we were in our own home. Rental owner was right next door, and they were extremely attentive to our needs as well as friendly. The full kitchen was an added convenience, which we took advantage of for morning breakfast, occassional dinners and late night snacks. Super market was near by, and location ,made it easy to get to El Junque rain forest, Luquillo Beach, and arecibo to the U.S. National Observatory. We would recommend it to family and friends and definitely plan to return during our next trip to Puerto Rico.

My friend and I (2 girls in 20s) stayed here for five nights in July. Kathleen and her husband picked me up from the airport and took us back (at 5:30 a.m. on a Saturday, no less), and also took me by the grocery store when I first arrived to pick up a few snacks. The unit is a little back house behind their main residence in residential Ocean Park. It's only a block or two from the beach, very walkable. Because it is a residentail area, there are limited food options in a walkable distance (especially at night), but my friend and I walked to Kasalta bakery at least once a day for their amazing coffee, food, and (in my case) flan :) We were able to get taxis to other areas when needed, such as Old San Juan and Isla Verde. The bungalow is sparse but has everything you need. The air conditioning is only in the bedroom area (which is the main part of the house) but it works very well, and there are several fans in the rest of the house if you need them. It has a fridge, coffee maker, etc. in the kitchen. We didn't use the pool but it looked lovely. Overall it was a great stay and a wonderful value.

We called Kathleen and she picked us up from the airport in the wee hours of the morning. The next night she drove us around to give us a tour of the city. Our kitchen was stocked with basic groceries and Puerto Rican coffee. When we said we were interested in hiring a car to drive into the countryside, she researched some good deals for us. Her family was equally friendly and helpful. We loved their family dog Betina, a beautiful and friendly boxer. It is not a touristy area but there are restaurants in walking distance and a beach only a block away.

Warwick, RIVery Nice Place with Great Hospitality

This place had everything we needed for our time in San Juan. Kathleen was very accommodating and is an excellent hostess. She drove us to the airport to pick up our rental car since we got in too late the night before. A couple times mangos fell off a tree and dunked into the pool. It was pretty awesome to dive in and grab the freshest, ripest mango I've ever tasted. Overall a great value and enjoyable stay.

Rochester, NYSafe, Comfortable, Clean

The place was more than we imagined. Safe, Comfortable, Clean with easy access to everything-prime location. Several days we walked to the beach, then relaxed in the pool, then went back to the beach....that is how close it is!
It is close to a beautiful local beach that isn't crowded. You can walk really far in one direction on the beach. Safe place to park rental car in driveway.
Apartment had everything you needed. Apartment was very clean! All things in the kitchen worked perfectly, and there was a grill too. Air conditioning worked great as it was over 90 degrees, we were never hot at night time in the bedroom. The bedroom has plenty of space, closet, dresser, TV, etc. Bathroom is smaller, but nice, and clean.
Several options within walking distance (grocery store, bakery, and different places to eat). We'd recommend getting a rental car to see the beautiful destinations outside of San Juan for 2-3 days.
There is a bus stop which will take you down to Old San Juan just down the street, safe and cheap for transportation during the day.
There is a great private pool (as pictured) with rafts, and a sunny and shaded area for those hot days! In addition there are chairs/table outside where you can relax, eat, and read.
Kathleen was a wonderful host, who helped with any of our questions and was always available if needed. She has some magazines, brochures of Puerto Rico destinations along with key phone numbers listed in the apartment. In addition internet is available in the apartment which helps to keep connected, and look up directions, and reviews of places to visit in Puerto Rico.
Highly recommend, I wouldn't stay any where else in Puerto Rico. I've traveled (20+ countries, over 6 continents) this is a great place, and extremely clean and affordable.

Owner
Melissa and Matt,
Thanks so much for the beautiful review. I'm so happy that you had a nice time(by the way, I mailed some post cards you left on the dresser, your friends must have received them by now). Don't forget the pictures you were going to link. Take care and thanks again. -

I am so glad we found this little guest unit by the beach in Ocean Park. For two people, it beats any other deal I could find for holiday rental on the island!!! The land-lady is a sweetheart and was very accommodating to some of our requests. This will be on top of my list if I ever go back to PR.

I stayed here in January and had a great time. Kathleen was very helpful. She came to the airport twice to pick me up (after I missed my flight, sorry), and let me use her phone when I lost mine. Everyone was very nice. The apartment is just around the corner from the beach, which was great because it was the main reason I went to San Juan. Taking a cab to Old San Juan is a little expensive ($15 each way) if you're planning on spending a lot of time there. However, almost everything you need is within walking distance. If you are looking to stay near the beach, with nice people, at a very affordable price, this is a great place to stay.
